Confused by Consult
catwoman7 replied to Imortalcandy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
like the above person said, the average weight loss difference between the two isn't that much, and it IS up to the patient to develop good, lifelong eating habits to prevent gaining the weight back - so I agree with that part. However, there's about a 30% chance of developing reflux with the sleeve (or if you already have it, of it getting worse), whereas the bypass usually improves - if not outright cures - GERD. most of us are put on PPI's (like Prilosec) for the first 3-6 months after surgery, but after that, no. If you continue to have reflux issues after that, then yes - but continuing reflux problems are much more common with sleeve than with bypass. I'd consult with another surgeon. Or if you don't have other options, then insist on bypass. You should be able to get the surgery that you want. -

I'd say he is partly right and partly wrong. The right part is that outcomes are not that vastly different between sleeve and bypass. You can have great success with both, and also completely regain weight with both. So, the fact that he's not bought into the higher weight loss with bypass rings true. It's about what you do with the tool. It isn't a magic bullet. The acid reflux thing is just totally wrong, though... If you have GERD or severe reflux the bypass is definitely better. My practice required an endoscopy before doing a sleeve. If I had had it - even silent GERD - she wouldn't have done the surgery. I'd consult with other surgeons if you have options where you live and see what they say. I spoke with 3 different practices when I was considering mine and I learned a lot at all the consults. It really helped me make the right choice (for me) in surgery type and also the surgeon. -

Hmmm, that is completely opposite from what I learned from my surgeon and everyone in support groups and forums just by reading and listening to people's stories. I would try to have a consult with another surgeon. I had SEVERE GERD before surgery, so bad I have extensive damage to my esophagus that had to be repaired during surgery. I went into my first apt. with my surgeon with plans of getting sleeve. He explained both surgeries in depth and then explained why the sleeve was not a good choice for me. Mainly was because of the GERD and a high amount of patients end up with some to a ton of acid problems with the sleeve, secondly because I wanted to loose so much weight that the malabsorption would assist in that more so than just the restriction. he asko explained that the hatial hernia repair and the bypass would likely eliminate the GERD if not completely, very likely to get it under control. I was on 2 prescriptions meds and eating tums every day and still, vomiting fireballs half the time. I am 4 weeks post op and I am now only taking a pepcid prescription which everyone takes for a while after surgery to lower the risk of ulcers, but better yet I have had ZERO acid problems. I mean NONE! I know it is still early, but I am starting to get back to a regular diet, even eating some hot sauces from time to time and still no issues. I have high hopes. Honestly, even if I have to take meds I would be completely satisfied as long as they completely controlled it with the meds. This is just my experience and everyones is different. But I truely believe his information is incorrect based on years of research and what I have learned. But I am no professional. -
Can you ever drink soda again after surgery
GradyCat replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have been trying to remember whether my surgeon's rules were no carbonation for the first six months or no carbonation ever again. That being said, I've been having two carbonated beverages a week for two years now, so I guess it's okay? I can only drink a couple of ounces at a time because the carbonation bloats me. -
Some plans encourage you to eat more than 1000 calories a day especially at your 11 weeks out. So don’t beat yourself up if you’ve had some days that you have. I bet even when you did you still didn’t eat the volume of food or at the same frequency as you did before surgery. I was only advised portion sizes never calories. I started at 1/4 cup & worked up to almost a cup by goal. One of the most helpful strategies I still employ is to ask myself if I need the next bite or do I just want it. Coupled with trying to stop eating before I feel full. Eat slowly and never be afraid to put your cutlery down, push your plate away from you &/or sit back from the table. Real hunger feels different to head hunger. Head hunger will go if I distract myself or delay eating for 30minutes or so or if I focus on drinking (warm is best). Real hunger persists. With head hunger I want a specific food or flavour (sweet, salty, etc.) but it often doesn’t satisfy the desire. With real hunger I just want food & nutritionally dense food satisfies it. I feel restless with real hunger like something is wrong. Head hunger usually affects my emotions - hangry or frustrated. Are you bored, stressed, frustrated or another emotion & is this what is driving you to eat? Are you eating out of habit or a time on the clock? A rumbling tummy often doesn’t mean you are hungry but it’s just your body digesting food. I rumble & grumble all day long but I’m not hungry. Stomach acid can make you think you’re hungry. PPIs can help with that. Nutritionally dense food like proteins are usually more filling than empty calorie, high sugar, high fat or highly processed foods. Have a chat with your dietician.

April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I feel you on the mourning the food addiction all I want is to eat until I’m full it’s crazy how fast you have to come to terms with your addiction. Many times I wish I had never done this but I also recognize that that’s the addiction talking and that I will find more fulfillment in choosing to be healthy. Just have to keep the mindset I know I shouldn’t be weighing myself but I think after all the dieting that never stuck all the working out and the weight I would shed and quickly gain back the fact I’m watching the scale consistently show me I’m dropping weight it’s helping me realize that I made the right choice. I’m dreading the stalling period already but I’m getting better and not checking everyday but I have a smart scale called Fit Track Pro and every time I weigh myself it keeps track of it and I can watch it decrease and it also measure BMI muscle mass water intake and visceral fat of course not as accurate as the doctors office but it’s a very nice tool that I have I’m glad your feeling better if you ever wanna chat lemme know I’m always down for conversation ❤️ -

I'm on stage 2 of liquids which allowed me to add in protein shakes, v8 and yogurt. I'm on that until the 2 week mark. -

I’m envious! My program I stay on liquids for three weeks until I get the okay from my nutrition counselor are you okayed for puréed now? Or just trying out some soft stuff! -
I’m scheduled for my vertical sleeve on June 7th at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans 🥳 Because my BMI is 35, I only have to do 1 week liquid diet prior to my surgery date. Then 2 weeks liquid diet, followed by week 2-4 puréed diet, 1-2 month post op is soft foods, then 3 months post op is solid foods.

Help with nausea?
catwoman7 replied to LauraLoodles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
did this just start recently? And is it mostly after you eat or drink something? If those things are true, it could also be a stricture. You're in the right time frame for it. Let your clinic know. If they suspect it might be that, they'll have you come in for an upper endoscopy. It's an easy fix if that's what it is. I had two of them (at four weeks out and again at about eight weeks out) they almost always appear 1-3 months after surgery. They're very rare after the three month mark. About 5% of bypass patients get those. -
about a week. And just a warning, that first one can be a doozy, so I'm glad you're taking stool softeners!

You should take the basics, toothpaste toothbrush, hair brush, a book if u like and a charger. I Took my favorite neck pillow. Expect to nap between lab draws, nurses checking on you, and walking. It is hard to get a solid 6-8 but it won’t matter a week from then. Hope your surgery and recovery go very smoothly! I had surgery RNY on 4-5. I am back to All normal activities, bored, not working yet!! So happy with everything so far. I am still in 2 tbs purée 3x/day but I’m fine with that.Never Looking back! -

Can you ever drink soda again after surgery
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You should always follow YOUR surgeon's recommendations. They have them for a reason. That being said, my plan does not prohibit carbonation after 6 months. I am 7 months post-op and I tried one sip of a carbonated drink a few weeks ago and it immediately came back up. For whatever reason, the fizz did NOT agree with me and it just sort of foamed its way out. For me, its not a big loss as I was never much of a soda drinker, but I know a lot of people who enjoy carbonated drinks and would prefer not to give them up. Definitely wait until you are fully healed, well established with your eating and water habits, and its cleared by your surgeon. But it definitely CAN work for some folks post-op! -
I'm on day 4 of my 2-week liquid diet. It has been rough. I'm not a fan of the broth but found that adding a bit of soup base and seasonings helps. I get now why people have posted about mourning their former life (even though I haven't even had surgery yet). There's no way around this though, I just have to keep pushing through. It's comforting to know that others are going through this with me!

Tips & tricks for the pre-op ALL LIQUID DIET!
oldandtired replied to Vivis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't stock up too much before surgery; I did, and found that after surgery I couldn't stand the same drinks I chugged before! Ended up giving 3 12-packs away. Also-Ramen broth (of course, don't eat the noodles) was on my list of pre-op, and for some reason, it really, really helped. -
Help with nausea?
oldandtired replied to LauraLoodles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Agreed, some of the meds do make you drowsy. BUT you are also miserable. The first meds they put me on worked a little--but how can you drink if you feel that you are going to heave after a swallow? I couldn't smell food at work. Couldn't look at food. Sat at my desk with a trash can between my legs. Even with the two meds, I stare at my pills morning and night as obstacles. I have an appointment in a week, and plan to ask him to scope me, and if you knew me, doing that is the last thing I want. So you do what you think is best. -
First plateau at 9 months post op
lizonaplane replied to Rey Rodriguez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Three weeks is barely a stall! I know people who stay the same weight for months, then WHOOOSH! lose a few pounds. It is definitely harder to lose weight as you get closer to goal/a healthy weight. -
I think the quality of the food is more important than the quantity of the food. Plus, one day of eating 1400 calories is not going to cause you to gain weight. Were you eating protein or chips and cookies? Were you eating real food or drinking a milkshake? There were times at 11 weeks out when I would eat about 1000 calories or more, but I still lost weight. It was mostly days when I had exercised a lot or was awake for longer than normal (like had to get up at 3 AM for a flight). You should eat when you're hungry, but make sure your eating healthy food, and that you're experiencing TRUE hunger not head hunger, thirst, or some other emotion.

Help with nausea?
oldandtired replied to LauraLoodles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 1/2 months out, and have struggled with nausea/queasiness every day. They say it will get better, but not yet. There ARE meds-ask your doctor! I am on two different ones, and after a couple of months, started taking more of them than prescribed--after looking them up and finding out his dosage was on the low end, and I was not going to poison myself. Call your doc-and be VOCAL! -
I felt the same regret the first 2 weeks after surgery. It was really intense and felt like I didn’t care about losing weight anymore. I didn’t even look at the scale, but I could still see my body changing. It is a lot like postpartum in a way, and I am grateful to have a lot of support at home. Everything is looking a lot better now that I’m doing at least puréed foods, but I still struggle a lot. The past couple have days have been great compared to those 2 really dark weeks. My care team told me that I will probably experience the stages of grief, and eventually it will get a lot better.
