Question about meds ?
Jodi_620 replied to Thegirlnextdoor's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine only said I may or may not be able to swallow them whole. It all depends on how tight I am and how big the pill is. There was no timeline on when I should try. I have been able to get my Sythroid and coated tablets down from the beginning. Capsules and Caplets wouldn't go down at all in the beginning and even now, it takes effort to get them down. I take three "Hair Skin and Nails" caplets and I have to swallow one with a ton of Water, wait 5-10 minutes for the next and so on. If they get stuck I slime BIG TIME!!! I still take my multi and Calcium in chewable form just because it is easier. -
I disagree with with Dabeyhive and RickM's comments above. Sure, keto isn't for everyone, but it's great for many people. I love the fact that it gives me some firm rules to follow and it happens to fit my eating preferences. First, I don't believe Keto is a fad diet at all. It's been around in various forms since the 1920's and became the basis of the original Atkin's diet in the early 1970's. It works very well both for weight loss and general health benefits. The problem is that some people don't really understand the diet or follow it correctly--and that's where people into problems. Following a proper Keto diet doesn't mean you should be chowing down on cheeseburgers without the bun eating bacon with every meal. While cheeseburgers and bacon are not prohibited on Keto, those aren't recommended either. You should stick to things like organic eggs, lean organic meats and wild caught fatty fish (like sockeye salmon). Stay away from fatty meats, since the fat is bad things the animals consumed are stored. You then add healthy fats to your food, like avocado, MCT oil, extra virgin olive oil, ghee etc. The idea is to "prime the pump", so you body burns off its excess glycogen stores and then converts stored fats into ketones for energy. This is important, especially if you're insulin resistant. For me, I am really happy with Keto and I can definitely stay on keto long term. My surgeon and nutritionist are on board with my keto choices. I just had my blood work done after 2 months on Keto and everything was perfect. I am no longer diabetic (A1C dropped from 6.3 on multiple meds to 5.1 on no meds). My triglycerides dropped to 54 (they were 450 this past summer on meds). My cholesterol is 190, but my good cholestrol is 97 (which is outstanding)--so that's good. Some of these may be from the surgery, but diet and exercise are equally critical. I suggest that you don't do keto on your own, but you do with with the guidance of a doctor or nutritionist that has a lot of knowledge about keto. I personally keep my net carbs down to approximately 20g a day and close to a 1:1 ration of fat to protein. At this point, I am 14 weeks post op (99 days). I am eating between 1200-1600 calories a day. Those calories are made up of 45% protein, 45% fat and 10% carbs. The carbs I am consuming are mostly from vegetables--even green veggies have some carbs. I don't eat any bread, starches, potatoes, sugar etc. I avoid high carb fruit, but I am allowed berries. I avoid processed foods to the greatest extent I can. I also work out daily--at a high intensity (and have been since I had all physical restrictions removed 1 month after surgery). I have lost 70 pounds since my highest weigh in. My pants size has dropped from a 44 to a 32. My body fat has dropped from 28% to 16.5%. Weight loss surgery is only a tool (a good one), but I would say it gives you a head start and helps prepare balance your body's hormones and stomach so people like me (morbidly obese, with a trifecta of co-morbidities) can lose weight like a normal person without insulin resistance/diabetes and other issues that get in the way. Once I had those issues, in check the rest of it was up to me--with keto and serious exercise making the big difference in getting me to where I want to be. I'll let my pictures speak for themselves: The was me on July 4, 2018 (weighing around 255-260) : This is me on the day of Surgery (weight 235): This is me on March 23, 2019 (weighing 190): As a 45 year old man with diabetes etc., no way I could have done this without VSG. However, I really believe Keto and exercise (45 minutes moderate to high intensity cardio 5-6 times a week and 1 hour of high intensity weight training 4-5 times a week) have changed my health and my life. I can't imagine going back to the life I had before surgery, nor could I imagine not living a keto lifestyle at this point.

10 months PO severe pain under left rib radiating to shoulder
Jeanniebug replied to Kate207's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 19 when I had my gallbladder out, so it's been a few (ahem) years. I'd forgotten which side it was on. And I didn't look to see where my scar was. LOL! I just remembered that the pain went all the way through my body. -

Tips to help elasticize your skin?
dani_nyc replied to Mandi1441's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For women, we have hard time with the lower abdomen region. When you do your cardio.. Do an interval cardio setting 2-3x a week. That will help a lot with the muscles, fat, and skin in that region. It's hard but start off doing 10 mins and working your way up. Elliptical and precor are great for it because you can raise the resistance. Treadmill raise the incline. Elipitcal takes alot of pressure off the knees and ankles, so that may help you. I had 4 abdominal surgeries in 3 years due to renal cancer. So I feel your pain! You will be surprised how the muscles will work back. Just takes dedication and time. -
So I'm 2 months ... And I keep getting sick. Before I had surgery I got the flu shot to protect me, but no luck :/ So far I've had ear & throat pain, and tested positive for Strep... Started 10 days of antibiotics My new tummy doesn't like the antibiotics, and I have constant diarrhea... Lucky me lol I was feeling better- No ear or throat pain, but now I started to get a sinus cold/flu. I feel congested, weak, and my entire body aches And as if that all wasn't enough... I think those antibiotics are causing me to develop an yeast infection... WTFudge!!!!!!

Clothing Sizes: What do they even mean anymore?!?!?
MinaDina replied to OutsideMatchInside's topic in The Gals' Room
In my mind I say Im cool if I make it to like at 16 or an 18...whatever that is. My body is super weird like for the last 10 years I've been in 26/28 pants, but at the same time I've gained roughly 75-100 lbs. I somewhat dread the changes coming, because I wont be able to pop online to my trusted plus size retailers and just order. Im not a shopper, never have been, never will be. Going into clothes shops and having to actually try on clothes is pure torture for me. I think my plan of action is going to just be to wear dresses for the next 6 months, at least I can get a few wears out of them unlike pants that just fall off(for some strange reason none of my work pants have belt loops). It's never too late, until its too late -
Im sure hundreds have felt this way BUT MY BOOBS ARE GONE!

The cheap cotton 3 pack sports bras from walmart are awesome for around $10. Even better is their $6 single pack microfiber sports bra. They aren't sturdy enough to be an actual sports bra, so don't play tennis in them or you might wind up with black eyes! They last forever and are very comfy and expand and contract with loss or gain. -

19 weeks pregnant and getting nervous!!!!!
Lawdcha posted a topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I am 19 wks pregnant and I was banded in 2007. As of today I have lost 20lbs since the begining of my pregnancy! I have not had an unfill and kinda reluctant to get one. At my last doctors appt. my dr. told me I am not getting enough calories in and I'm starting to get scared! I dont want anything to effect the health of myself or the baby. So far they say the baby is growing fine which is great! But, does anybody have any suggestions on what I should eat or If I should get an unfill or not? -
I was sleeved on 11/8 and had to spend one week on Clear liquids. I have now moved to Full Liquids. My diet consist of the following: Milk, soy milk or rice milk fruit juice Soup (blended into full liquid) frozen yogurt or sorbet (fat free) pudding or custard (sugar free) vegetable juice Cream of Wheat Yogurt Then my documents it says daily recommeneded intake is 60-70grams of Protein per day. Does this just apply to when I get the soft foods stage? If I am only suppose to eat 3 meals a day and drink 12 cups of water/liquid per day I am confused. My plan for this week was to eat the following: Breakfast: Cream of Wheat Lunch: Yogurt Dinner: Jello Drink: 1 cup of apple juice and 1 cup of almond milk (not on my list but I think it will fall under the milk) during day plus 10 cups of Water If hungry: Add in a either beef broth or tomato soup if I need salty or a sugar free pudding if I need sweet like or if for any reason I need to mix up one the above items. Exercise: 30 minute walk per day So my questions are: 1. Do I have to worry about the protein intake at this stage? 2. Does the meal plan I have look reasonable for Week 2? 3. How much is a serving of Yogurt (2 ozs)? 4. How much is a serving of Cream of Wheat (2 ozs)? (Today I was able to eat about 5-6 teaspoons full for Breakfast before I felt full) 5. At this stage do I have to worry about getting "enough" calories? If so what should be the goal?

I have used a C-PAP machine for the last 10 years. I had RNY surgery October 15 and have lost 90 lbs since then. I called my sleep doc after I lost 50 lbs because my throat was too dry although I used the humidifier part of the machine. He called in an order to the service company to lower the pressure and things were good. I called the same doc last week, after losing an additional 40 lbs, when I once again felt the same dryness. He again called in an order to the service company to lower my air pressure. I have my yearly appt with the doc in May and he suggested I call to have that appt moved up so we can discuss my progress. I fear my doctor will soon make me do another sleep study, and I probably should after losing 90 lbs. I have another 90 to go before I weight 160, which is the optimal weight for my height. Good luck to all of you with sleep apnea. I hope to someday not have to use the C-PAP, but who knows. I might just be prone to obstructive sleep apnea and being morbidly obese makes it worse.

I have heard that people with less to lose will lose it slower than people work a large amount to lose. My friend had her sleeve done Jan 2014 and it took her a full 18 months to slowly lose 120 pounds. I have to lose about 80 pounds so my expectations are set According. I don't think I'll be losing 40-50 pounds in the first month like someone who has 200 to lose might do. I'll be happy at losing 6-10 pounds a month. Where is my March Sleeves?
rdt210 replied to Laurabrown929's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 3/25 and have lost 10 pounds so far. Today starts week 3 and I was UP .8 lb - I guess the "stall" has happened to me. I'm also curious how many calories everyone is taking in. I average between 500-600/day and am getting 55-60 grams of Protein. I do feel like my energy is back, though I still get really tired at the end of the day. Had a very busy weekend and could not keep my eyes open past 8:00 last night - so I went to bed and slept til 5 AM! Needless to say, I'm feeling really good this morning! -
I got my lab band this morning around 10 I am in a little pain and my throat is hurting but overall its not that bad.

Not lost any weight for 10 days. I feel like poop.
MoominMan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had bypass on August 10. Between then and Sept 08 I lost 14.6 kg (32 pounds) - but since then nothing. It's now been 10 days since I lost any weight and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Wondering if I should cut back on portion sizes (I have a small breakfast but lunch and dinner are around 150-200g each). -
How do you get your fiber in?
Kathy812 replied to crazyplantlady's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Glad you posted this topic. About a month ago, I met with my surgeon and nutritionist. I complained that I'm struggling to get to my goal weight. One of their recommendations was to increase my fiber. They provided me w/a list of fiber recommendations. Their fiber goal for me is 20grams. I track on my fitness pal and I struggle to get above 10! A few suggestions they gave are: 1 flat out 100%wheat Hungry girl flatbread (7g), Bob Mills Organic high fiber hot Cereal ( a whopping 10g), Fiber one Protein bar (5g), rolled oats, squash, edamame, various nuts and seeds& green veggies (spinach, broccolli, Brussels sprouts) . As I write this, I noticed that I Have only eaten a few of the items on this list, which could be why I struggle w/fiber. -

How much can you eat.....
confusedgirl replied to cher3150's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am seriously considering this banding. I looked up your profile and it is so similar like mine that i thought i would question you. i hope you don't mind. when did you get your banding done? Is it painful? How long before you can go to work? Are you not hungry at all or is it hard to eat after you do this? what made you really go through this? all of these years i have been wanting to loose weight. it is so easy to put it on but to get rid of it, is not that easy! i am 5'4" and i am 198 lbs. I got liposuction done about 10 years ago, but i dont' recommend it becuase other areas in your body grow a lot if you continue to eat a lot so you are some what not proportional anymore. Please help me make the best decision for me. -
Too soon to workout?
keystone28 replied to carrie43's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor told me walking only, 30 minutes a day. If you cant do the 30 all at once, split it up into 3 10 minute sessions. I would advise against working out. I had initially asked my Doctor if I could go back to work after 3 weeks, and it was stressed to me that the chances of pulling the staples/sutures is rather high if you participate in regular work or exercis aside from walking, which can end up with you back in the hospital. -
I have an iphone and travel quite a bit to Mexico. I simply disable the data portion and then just use the wifi. If you have an iphone it is pretty easy to do that. That way you will not incur expensive data roaming fees. You only get charged for voice if you answer the phone or check your voicemail. I simply do not do either unless it is an important call. Then it is not to expensive. If you call AT&T before you leave they can tell you but I think it is like 10 or 20 cents per minute. You can disable your voice service as well and essentially turn an iphone into an ipod touch which will only use wifi while you are down there. It certainly works at hospitals in MX that I have been to, mostly those in Cancun/tourist areas.

Mourning my now "self" before my new "self"
Sarsa333 replied to GoHawksTX's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I worry about it as well. The last time I was a healthy weight was at the age of 10 in 1988. My weight is my identity and the change will be life changing. I'm looking for a good therapist to be part of my health care team and will see a therapist for the rest of my life. I want to be happy. I want a re-do on my lost childhood. -

praying for you guys tonight and will the next few days, also. I am a RN and scheduled April 10 and I am scared, too!! But, God is in control and we just have to focus on the positive. Ask the anesthesiologist to give you something when you get to the hospital tomorrow if you are still feeling anxious. They can give you something to help with the anxiety and while you are waiting to go to OR. Can't wait to hear how awesome you are doing!! -

I love the Isopure as well. I mix half a bottle (10 oz) with matching flavored Water (10 oz). I've also just drank them as they are. I've tried most of the flavors and I haven't found one that I didn't like. The grape frost is the best!
