Just had a crappy experience !

Keto breath isn't far off from the stench you experienced, both on the field and on the floor.

    Health expert panel ranks diets

I think it depends on the individuals genetic make up or health conditions. The diet you list is great for my uterine fibroids, but bad for my hypothyroidism. Keto was great for my thyroid, bad for my fibroids. The only thing I know is when I eat gluten and carbs my body smells and I'm sluggish, so I HAVE to keep my total carbs below 30 / 20 net. Sugar below 15 for day, try to keep it at 10.
  3. @jenn1 Absolutely agree with you. And DEF love the weight loss is in the kitchen and body comp is in the gym. I also still maintain that a low carb or keto diet isn't for everyone or that there is a one-size-fits-all-solution and equation for sustainable weight loss. You know? I just thought he gave a very easy to understand explanation of CICO.
  4. Thanks for the kind words. I'm an engineer by training, so that probably explains it Haha! Glad that you might be seeing some changes on the scale! It'll come, hang in there. Being precise is just a habit from a million diets I've been on for years, it's also something my NUT has really pushed on us. We're supposed to be measuring everything and logging it (just the amount, food and protein). A food scale helps a lot. I'm also using it as a way to make sure I don't over eat, 4 oz is ok, 5 is serious pain, so I measure carefully! One thing I noticed in the foods you listed is they all have quite a bit of salt. You very well may be retaining some water, so as you switch things up you may see a big drop quick! BTW - the rash may be a Keto rash if you're having very few carbs, got it all down my side - annoying but went away.
  5. Get Back dont be hard on yourself. I have gained 60lbs and I spent a lot of time being embarrassed and ashamed of myself. I am however on the other side of those emotions now and I am ready to fight again. You know your body and what works for you better than anyone. I have been doing Keto since 3/1/19 and I have lost 4 pounds and lots of inches already. That is what works for me. Find what works for you and just take one day at a time. Don't beat yourself up and don't overthink it. Small steps one day at a time is how we lost the weight the first time and we can do it again. I recommend journaling also it helps. I journal my feelings my weight and what I am eating and it helps to go back an read and compare information. You can do this. Keto is good because you still get to eat good flavorful food while losing and the food gives you energy as well. But find what works for you. Sending you hugs and lots of support. Hang in there

    Help! Keto and VSG?

Hey guys!! I haven't logged in here in forever! I had surgery 4 years ago (surgiversary was on the 8th) . My highest was 280.4 , I dipped down to 193 and then got pregnant. I didn't gain much through out my pregnancy, i breastfed after, and lost all the weight and then some. i got to 184.4 i think . Then i don't know what happened. I got back up to 220.2. On may 23rd i started trying to lose weight, I went to a weight loss doc and got put on phentermine . It curbs my hunger for sure but i went from doing the 5 bite diet, to counting calories, to low carb, to keto. 5 bite was good i was losing but it was hard and i kept cheating. counting calories was good but i wasn't losing a whole lot and felt like i needed more structure. Low carb was good but i felt like i needed more than that. so i tried keto. which im on now. I like it but i have someone helping me that hasn't had WLS and doesnt understand it. It's still hard to get in a lot. Like Protein still makes me super full , super fast. so i feel like im forcing myself to eat. I started on aug 2 at 202.4 i think it was. so 11 days later im hovering between 200.6 and 199.6 . i feel like EVERYONE is losing faster than I am, and i had WLS. So....has anyone that had the sleeve ever done keto? I'd like to continue doing it but is it ok to cut back my macros? what should they be at? can anyone help me????? Thanks in advance!!

    Serious COLD FEET!!!!!

Nice. Feels good to know I'm waiting on my spa day Also a huge +1 to everyone who has shouted out Dr. Weiner's videos. His videos are the first resource that made me feel I could actually permanently change my eating habits and actually enjoy it and gain the great health that comes with eating a diet largely based on plants. For a long time I assumed I'd have to be keto after surgery and I have never enjoyed that type of eating. In addition to all that, he breaks everything down to the nitty gritty, science-wise, so you can really understand and soak up the information. Those videos are wonderful!

    Apple Cider Vinegar Discussion

KeyLady42, we've all been in your shoes--or we wouldn't have needed bariatric surgery. I don't think there is such a thing as "trying to stick to your diet plan". That's like being a little bit pregnant. You either are or are not sticking to the plan--no in between. Since you're five years post-op, the original post-op plan may not be the right plan for you. Your nutritional needs may be different now. You should probably make an appointment with your surgeon for a follow up and meet with your practice's nutritionist to come up with a plan that may be better for you. Personally, I think a keto style diet would be a really great option for someone that's five years out and has regained a little (15 pounds regain after losing 220 isn't a huge amount, but I understand your concerns about how that can snowball). You need to find a dietary lifestyle that will be sustainable for your now and into the future. Also, regardless of what dietary lifestyle you are following, are you tracking your marcros and calories using an app like MyFitnessPal??? Some dietary lifestyles place less emphasis on calorie consumption (which is ok), but calories always matter in the end. You can't lose weight on even keto or atkins if you're eating 4500 calories a day of healthy fats and proteins. If you are getting out of that habit of tracking your macros and calories, it's time to start it up again. It's hard to know how much you are consuming if you're just eyeballing your food and guessing how many calories your eating. If you do that, chances are that you'll be off by hundreds of calories at the end of the day (usually underestimating your consumption). It's time to get that food scale out so you know what you're putting in your mouth. It's ok to go off diet every once in a while, but you can't let one bad meal turn into one bad day, turn into one bad week etc. You need to get right back on the bandwagon and double down on your discipline. Finally, are you sticking with your exercise program or have you given up on that? Weight is lost in the kitchen, not the gym---but it still helps a little with weight loss and it's very important for overall health. Physical fitness and regular also helps motivate most people to eat better (particularly when they see and feel how hard it is to burn off those calories). I wish you the best of look with the continuation of your WL journey!!
  9. If you’re not eating low carb now, I’d suggest trying keto. I usually drop 5-6 pounds in my first week because of the water weight

    Post Op Liquid diet hard?

I am waiting to get my surgery date (appointment with surgeon is next month) so I haven't started any pre op prep. I am on a strict keto diet right now (was able to loose my 10% pretty quick) and have become fat adapted, so I do not feel hungry often, but I am worried about switching to all liquids. Its the "dumping" effect that scares me, I don't want to chance eating too much but don't want to feel hungry either.

    Looking for other newbie friends!

You have a date! That's exciting! Not going to lie- the two week liquid diet is hard, especially the first few days. But after day 2 or 3, I got in a zone. I journal, and I think that helped me the most. Before my two week shake diet, I had to do 2 months of a keto diet. I think that was harder because I was still allowed to eat! Taking the option away was easier for me at least. I did have a "last meal" before the two weeks of just shakes. I sure didn't tell my surgeon that though! ???? You are so close! My fiancé and I were just saying, the whole pre-op process was so stressful and at times, nerve wracking. But it has been much less stressful in the past week for sure and for that, we are thankful! I haven't had complications thus far and hoping to stay that way. Has your doctor required anything else besides the two week diet? Is it a liquid diet?
  13. Great of you to check in and update us on progress! I love hearing how it is going. I am also curious about the pasta (supposed to expand in your stomach) but I also feel like almost any food is possible, it's just the quantity. There's a WLS master on this site who talks about the KETO diet alot and he is a long way into this process. I like the keto because fat is encouraged (especially certain types) and protein. Check it out under Keto or InsideMatchesOutside (his name) or something like that. I am happy and excited because the weight continues to come off - not weighing myself all the time and sometimes I eat something yummy (cheesecake for example) and I still loose. I'm just not eating that much of anything and I try really hard to get my protein. It's so motivating to get the results! I still need to walk more (and I will). It's been crazy busy with my 3 kids - prom and all kinds of exciting stuff. But tonight I made an awesome soup and I'm enjoying some quiet! Wishing you well and keep the updates coming!! Thanks Cass

    Keto

I didn’t literally mean eat bacon all day smh. I know how keto works, i know all about the keto flu. If it works for you, cool but it’s not for me. Also, please keep in mind: how you do keto is not necessarily how others do it. There’s clean keto, lazy keto, dirty keto and strict keto. For me personally, there is literally no nutritional need to add unnecessary fat period. You can do the exact same thing simply by cutting out carbs and sugars and your body will adapt accordingly. The keto flu is temporary- that is not what i experienced which is why i can’t stand it and that is my choice. My body loves balance and variety, my body loves all veggies and all fruits, and doesn’t like restricting entire food groups. We are just different and that’s fine. Please stop judging me simply because my choice is different from yours. Obviously it’s working for me.

    Keto

I do IF (intermittent fasting) as well as a low carb approach. It is "defacto" keto, even though I some days eat 40-50g of total carbs, my net (minus fiber) may be between 25-30g net carbs. I can assure you I am in ketosis. I do keep my fat lower cuz I don't tolerate it very well right now. I met 1st goal (150lbs) at 8.5 months and am 9lbs away from 2nd goal. I hope to reach that in about 30-45 days. Then beyond to Goal #3 which will be end goal and I don't know where that will end up. I hope somewhere around 125-130lbs. I eat about 2 meals per day, sometimes 1, sometimes 2 meals + small snack. Here was yesterday's plan. It was whacky. I normally have way more veg on there and usually have a daily salad, but I'd fasted for 39hours the day before and was very hungry for fat and protein--so I ate it:
  16. I'm a pretty picky eater, but I've always loved most veggies, Broccoli, green beans, etc., no problem. I had gotten off the cereals a couple years ago trying to lose, knowing I'm insulin resistant/PCOS. I lived on Atkins/keto 20g net carbs daily for a year and a half and only lost a small amount and that's when I knew I needed bariatric surgery. A week post op, now I am lower than I have been in years.
  17. Yes, it's not a surgery thing per se, but you get either what's known as "keto breath" when you are are on low calories diets where it smells like acetone or some variation on an unpleasant breath. Those dissolving breath tabs that you put on your tongue work great to fight them.
  18. I’m feeling a little depressed of lately and have been eating my emotions away.. Mad at myself

Sorry to hear of your loss and challenges. We all deal with stress differently, so the thought of seeking assistance with that is good advice. I will say from the weight perspective, I was six years out from my sleeve and had gained back about 45 pounds. I found that what worked for me was to go on a 'time restricted feeding' schedule, and to eat a diet that was generally keto when I did eat. I skipped breakfast and only ate from Noon to 6pm. For those two meals I would have a serving of protein, and a green vegetable or salad. I was able to drop about 20 pounds in a couple of months. I stopped because my hiatal hernia had worsened enough that it had to be fixed with revision to bypass, but the diet program was working well. There is a nutrition doctor named Dr. Jason Fung who develops programs for insulin control diets, which is what I based my program on. You might want to Google him and check out his information.

HELPPPP ME :( I cant stop itching

There are a couple of things that come to mind here. First, when you are on a high protein diet you can get constipated. Second, what is your water intake? If you are drinking coffee or any caffeinated beverage you have to add double the amount of water to cover the caffeine intake because it will dehydrate you. The itching could be a sign of dehydration. You have to drink at least 64oz of water plus the water you intake for protein and food. Second, your body is going through a drastic nutritional change make sure you are getting the right vitamins. Third with this nutritional change comes new allergies, likes, and dislikes. Look at what you are eating. Low carb diets could cause Keto Rashes. Look up, Keto Rash or Candida.

    Keto

I understand every body is different. I'm sorry it came across as judgemental. I percieved your post as judgemental, and reacted to that. I 'm sorry if I misinterpreted your post. I totally agree that there are many ways if eating and each body is different. I'm glad you found your way. But it seemed you were putting down my way of eating. There are a lot of variations on Keto now, and some of them are strange. But the main definition of keto is to lower your ketones by giving up carbs. Usually, those carbs are replaced by fat--i.e. cream instead of milk, cooking in a healthy fat instead of just using a nonstick spray, etc.. Some of the ways I hear about keto seem gimmicky, but, (as you said, and I agree,) every body is different. The main thing many people don't realize is that keto is a lifestyle, not just a diet to go on and quit when you reach your goal. Unfortunately, it is hard to make it a lifestyle with so many delicious carbs out there, tempting you--sigh. But it is the only diet that works for me long term, even if I fall off often. One benefit for me is that I never developed diabetes, even though my weight went up (gained a lot of weight due to medications).

    Keto

Just curious of any long timers that do Ketigenic diets. My nutritionists says they do not recommend it for bariatric patients. I am curious if anyone does the Keto lifestyle and if it works. I am 3 1/2 years post Gastric Sleeve and need to lose more weight. Any thoughts? Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Vitamin Struggle!!

I haven't been doing keto on purpose. The current guidelines from my doc are fruit, veggies, and meat. It's okay for me to do 1 protien shake or bar a day (getting me to focus on getting nutrients and protien from whole foods) . I don't do very much fruit because of the sweetness. I've been leaning towards and loving strawberries and berries in general. I suppose one thing that I have a few times a week that I love Is peanut butter.

Has anyone tried Keto after VSG?

This is a great site that might be helpful https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/
  25. I had a full gastric bypass over 20 yrs ago and have struggled to eat any meat. I needed to lose almost 100 lbs because of heart issues and that worked out well, but have since gained just a few back. I am now losing so much hair because I can’t get enough protein. I am doing keto because it makes me feel better not to eat breads and beans. Anybody struggling with this that has had the surgery a while ago? I can’t drink enough protein. My family dr doesn’t seem to know much about more than broken bones and colds. HELP, I’m going to go bald if I can’t fix this. Any suggestions for my doctor?
