  1. Hey all! I'm new here! I've been looking around the website for a bit trying to gather all of the information that I can find. I booked my surgery for March 8 with Dr. Aceves. I'm having revision surgery from band to sleeve. Slightly nervous but from what I have heard I'm going to be in good hands Pre-Op diet .... sucks. I have gone over every single Protein shake that I own or can find in the store and think now I'll have to just stick to whey. I have some Body by Vi left over, Reshape (something that we used to sell but its not a meal replacement), Muscle Milk, Whey (from Costco). I've always looked at labels but clearly neglected to look at Carbs! I was quite shocked in the amount of them in yogurt and milk - oh and my frozen fruit that I put in my protein shake I understand the importance of the pre-op diet very well ..... what did you all do? I tried to do the "math" and have my carbs come in at 30. Whey protein looks like its my best bet - do any of you have any other ideas? I'll keep reading the boards -- but if anyone can give me a little advice on what you had during the day it'd be greatly appreciated! Surgery is a month away and I'd like to start this weekend for the best results! Thanks all! Alana

    Traveling

i'm currently living with a slipped lapband and need to have it removed. even though i've lost 110% of my goal weight, i decided against getting rebanded because i was told the percentage of it slipping again is too high. the thing is, i'm 4 years post op and i'm still not done paying for the first surgery which is why i need to travel from ohio to Mexico. i'm thinking of going with dr. Almanza because he seems to have done a lot of revision surgeries. how many days are you actually in the hospital / recovery home / hotel? i thought i'd have surgery day one, recovery house or hotel day two and travel back home day 3 but i heard that you're actually away closer to 5 days. there are no direct flights from san diego to cleveland so i'm not looking forward to the 6.5 hour flight home plus layover. how unbearable is this travel going to be? also, i'll be traveling alone.
  3. I've had my band for 9 years and am revising to the sleeve with Dr. Alberto Aceves. He is a highly skilled surgeon that costs a little more but like AntiBand said... this is your life. My surgery is April 1st and I am very at ease with my choice. Good luck with your journey!
  4. Thanks Antiband! Did Ponce revise you from the band?

    Family Concerns

I had a lap band done back in 2004 and I can tell you after having it for 9 years I never once had any "uncontrolled pooping" episodes. Honestly I've never heard of that complication. I'm in the process of trying to get sleeved. My lap band was removed in may due to forced bulimia, reflux and they just could not adjust it to work for me anymore. I lost most of my weight with the band from throwing up and just not being able to eat, at least not what I was supposed to be eating. I also no others who have been band, friends of mine and co workers and they have stalled with weight loss or have gained it back. Sorry I can't give you a revision story yet. That being said I do no someone that had her stomach removed decades ago due to ulcers and she is doing fine. Not saying there are not complications with this surgery but I know of many more with the band. My surgeon informed me most band patients are either having revision to sleeve or are patients that regained weight after bypass and are having band over bypass performed. Anything has risk, but I can tell you one thing, I'd never ask for my lap band back, ever. Good luck on your journey. Do what you think is right for you and not what someone else thinks. :-)
  6. It's wondering if anybody has gotten a band-to-sleeve revision by dr. Fernando Garcia?? I'm getting my surgery on June 15!
  7. Are you having straight VSG or a revision from lap-band? I agree that we have made a great choice. There are docs here in my city that couldve done it (for a lot more) but even if insurance would've covered it I feel better knowing that I am going to someone who is as good as he is with revisions.
  8. Sure ! Iv been researching obsessively for a couple of months now and IMHO. Dr. Rodriguez, Dr. Ramos-Kelly, Dr. Wilhmey, Dr. Corvela and Dr. Ariel Ortiz and Dr. Alvarez are the best in Mexico. I gathered this mainly from obsessively reading everything anyone had ever posted about surgeons. From there I contacted each one to discuss my specific case as well as cost and what the packages included. A couple were scratched off right away because I am already sleeved and thought I wanted resleeved. Dr. Ortiz wanted to plicate my sleeve ..no thanks. Dr. Alvarez didn't think I would be happy with it and refused me. Dr. Corvela and Dr. Whilmey were both on board and Dr. Whilmey had the most experience with revisions but Dr. Rodriquez recommended the MGB which i NEVER thought I would even consider!! I started researching and I liked what I found. I then talked with Dr. Kelly and Dr. Illan about the procedure and both were in favor also but both combine hospital stay with hotel recovery, I liked Dr. Kelly a lot but he was about $1000 more and I'm already on the high end at $7900, all were well credentialed, well reviewed but Dr. Rod made the recommendation for the MGB, he has done over 10,000 procedures in his career and he operates out of the hospital used by the US embassy. Iv talked to a lot of others who have used him and have found no complaints at all!! I hope this helps, it was prob more than you were looking for lol ! I think if you are looking to be sleeved you can't to wrong with anyone Iv mentioned above but again prob Dr. Rod and Dr. Ramos Kelley and Dr. Wilhmey would be my number one picks !

Got my date for Dr. Garcia!

Congratulations!! It will be 16 weeks for me on Monday from having a revision with Dr Garcia, he is fantastic!! Well wishes to you!!
  10. Hello! I just scheduled my surgery for Dr. Alvarez at Endobariatrics. I will be having a lap band revision to a sleeve. to say I am nervous is an understatement. I had always had "thoughts" previously about having surgery in Mexico but after a ton of research I feel good about my decision. Did anyone else have surgery with them? How did it go?

    Seroma and Port Complications.......

Krzy4vt, thank you so much for your response. I feel a lot better! I did notice that it seems that this time around it is taking me a little longer to heal; I also have a physical job which may also be slowing down my healing time (lots of lifting and bending). After your revision did your doctor or PA advise you about anything that you need to avoid as not to disturb the port and or cause another issue with your tubing. My doctor told me that it is a rare complication that he does not see too often and said that I shouldn't have anything else to worry about (but I'm a worry wort lol). Congradulations on your weight loss. I was banded 3/13/13 and the last time I weighed I was down 37lbs.
  12. The gas that causes pain after surgery is not in your intestines (where Gas-X can get to it). It is the gas they use to inflate your abdomen during surgery to give them room to work. That gas gets trapped in your tissues and muscles and has to work it's way out of your body. It tends to rise which is why the pain can be so severe in your shoulders, upper back and neck. As to the original post, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I did not experience anything similar with my revision.

    Decisions Decisions

I have to admit, I'm a Dr. Aceves fan. He did my band then he did my revision from band to sleeve. I know first hand that Dr. A makes a very small and tight sleeve. Some doctors just don't have the technique down and they leave the sleeve too large and you don't lose well. I don't see the value in paying extra money in the US for a sleeve. You could spend more in the US for less experience and less hospital time... and for what? Just go to an FACS doctor, that way their background is totally verified.
  14. I'm sorry to hear of your struggles and hope things go better with your sleeve. I revised from the band to the sleeve, a choice made with more haste and panic than wisdom. As NaNa pointed out, reflux is extremely common after sleeve surgery. Chronic reflux can cause a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus. Regurgitation of acid while you're asleep poses a risk of aspiration (inhaling the acid) and then pneumonia. I'm diligent about taking the omeprazole my surgeon prescribed for me, but even at 17 months post-op, still have breakthrough reflux from time to time. Good luck with your sleeve.
  15. I too could have went to a doctor here in my hometown, unfortunately none of the doctor's here were experienced in band to sleeve revisions and this was the procedure I needed to have. I went to Dr. Aceves because of his experience, not because of the cost. I was very happy with the care I received. The whole experience was amazing from beginning to end. I feel great and was very happy with my choice of surgeon.
  16. Hi all, I just had a fill to 8.5 cc. Although I do feel some limitation I can still gulp down liquids orrery easily ( I only do this to test the tightness and not regularly). Also, I have a port that shifted it took 3 attempts from 2 docs to get in to do the fill. I'm worried that I will have to have a port revision soon I'd they can't get in next time. Anyone else have this issue T 8.5cc? Are my expectations too high for limitation on eating? Thanks for the help.
  17. I was talking to the practice manager where I plan on having my revision done if/when Aetna decides to cover the VSG. I was approved for a revision back in Nov'09 to replace my band, they were not able to and could only remove the band, my port is still in place. She said that I may have to do a supervised diet to get approved for another revision. That really confuses me because it would seem as if I should already be covered by the Nov'09 approval. Anybody else have to jump through any special hoops? I think I'm going to make an appt for my PCP just to get my weight logged for the month.
  18. Trishia, I haven't been on here in a while and haven't seen previous posts. Why are they doing revision if they don't know if your band is OK or not? I'm curious, because it sounds like you are having trouble with stuff getting stuck? I'm having that problem, one day I can eat like a lumberjack and the next I can't get cottage cheese down. I've had an endo, pressure fill, fluro, the band checks out pefect, and actually is too LOOSE. WTH? I'm PBing nearly every day now. It's very frustrating.
  19. Well, my revision surgery is just one more week away. Yeah!!! I've been Ms. Little Piggy the past three weeks...lots of social stuff going on. Finally had to break down and join the gym today and get over the food pig-out. Can't believe I'd ever say that I'm sick of eating but I am. Can't wait to get my band functional again. I'm assuming it will be at least four weeks before they will start filling again. But I really felt so much better with the smaller food amounts. So I've had my summer fun  Trisha
  20. Well, I got my schedule for my revision surgery....July 9th. So I will have a month on my own with no fill. I will say for the first few days I've eaten anything and everything but now I've gotten that out of my system and I'm back down to controlled portions and HAVE TO EXERCISE this next month. When they go in the will check everything out to make sure my band is all intact, which is good. Kind of like a tune-up  If there's anything they can see wrong with the band at that time, they will replace it. The port is fine as far as they can tell. But I did have the conversation with the surgeon that in the future if what I can eat changes radically from day to day...like one day I can eat Soup and the next day I can't eat the same kind of soup, then that's not normal. I guess the guilt my mother instilled in me my whole life led me to think that clearly there was something I was doing wrong.. But the plus side is I don't have to do the two week liquid diet but after puking for five days straight, even that wouldn't have been a problem...:tt2: Wish me luck guys trisha pennreporter
  21. November 17, 2010 surgery day weight was 244. Today, October 27, 2011 my weight is 167. The lapband seems too tight. I have no Fluid at all in my band. My surgeon is talking about removing standard band and replacing with large band. He doesn't know why I am reacting too it this way. The band hasn't slipped at all. I have had problems with keeping food down for months. Since the surgery, I have no hunger issues at all. I have to force myself to stop and eat. I am concerned that I am losing too much weight. I have had upper endoscopy and barium xray. Fluid does slowly flow through. Has anyone had this problem. Thanks Frank
  22. " Literally hundreds of posts are made by people monthly who are having band troubles and needing to revise" Literally hundreds of post made by a handful of people. You're playing fast and loose with the stats Maui. "Shouldn't these 75% have just had the sleeve to start with and avoided the risk, pain, scar tissue, aftercare and expense of a second surgery?" Of course they should have went with the sleeve but that would require some knowledge of forecasting the future and for most of us, that is not possible. And 75% of a handful of people doesn't even equate to literally thousands of people who went with the band and did not have a revision. You say 75% revise to the sleeve and are very pleased? What about the other 25%??? By your own admission there are 25% dissatisfied WLS patients who have no other options now that they have a sleeve? nearly 100% of band patients still have options. I.E. revisions to other WLS techniques or nothing at all. This is why so many choose the band. tmf
  23. Hi All, I was banded back in 2005 and lost approximately 60 lbs. About two years ago I started having issues with my band and gained back a significant amount of the weight I lost. I had my EGD today in preparation for my surgery and was told my band has slipped. With all the issues I've been having with it, I wasn't the least bit surprised. I am a bit apprehensive about the RNY but I believe it is my best option. If you had a slipped band or other issues, was it easier to get your removal/revision approved through your insurance co.? If so, and your insurance company has a waiting period, did they waive it? Thanks Michelle
  24. Had my revision on May 6th and still having trouble getting my liquids/protein in. I can't do protein shakes either but I ordered these very expensive protein shots that are only 2.9 oz and have 25 grams of protein. I use them on days I really need the protein to give me strength. Now that I am on soft foods protein has become easier. I eat 2 80 Cal Greek Yogurts and 2 egg whites each day but I am finding it hard to get my liquids in between trying to remind myself to eat every 3 or 4 hours. Hang in there it will get easier.
  25. Glad to hear that you are doing well. I will be getting my band to sleeve revision on June 10th. I hope my surgery goes as well as yours. Take care and keep me posted on your progress!
