Let's Check In November 2012 Sleevers!
adorablentx replied to timetobefree's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As we all embark on this new journey. IT IS OUR TIME!! I have the upmost respect, hope and appreciation for all of you regardless of being new to WLS or revision. We all know each others sturggle as we have all been there. I want you wish you all blessings and the best along this road although it will be tough for some and not so much for others I will do my best to be a shoulder to all who will need it because Im going to need it. I thought I could do it alone with the lapband but that was not the case. I find it you need to know the struggles and success of others to help you along the way. Its nothing like having family but its more benefical to have somebody that knows what your going through especially in the weight game. All be blessed and happy journey to getting to know the new you... HUGS B. -
Does anyone regret getting the sleeve?
mylighthouse replied to Kadidy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, and no. The sleeve has been an absolutely wonderful tool in that it dropped my weight significantly enough to be able to have a much needed hernia repair. The hernia had me in pain all the time, and my surgeon told me "you need to lose weight", but he couldn't perform the repair until I did. After losing the first 80-100 lbs, I had my hernia repair.... yay! Also, knee pain went away after dropping the weight.... and even though I wasn't outwardly manifesting other health problems, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, etc., I know the sleeve helped me keep those things away. Also, the sleeve helped me become more committed in my endeavor to be healthy, lose weight and keep it off, change my eating habits, etc. For all of those reasons, I am thankful for the sleeve! Now, after multiple problems (GERD related), I wish I had been more informed about choosing which type of surgery best suited me. I had moderate heartburn/acid reflux issues before the sleeve surgery, but I was afraid to get "rerouted" and have the bypass. I chose the sleeve. In hindsight, the bypass would have been the best surgery for me. Revision to bypass date is fast approaching! May 29th! -
How did you decide the sleeve was for you and any regrets?
NYJenn replied to Panda333's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Bypass all the way! I see way too many revisions from sleeve to bypass on this board. I decided on bypass and never looked back -
The Stuff They Don't Tell You
Wheetsin replied to Parker's Dad's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not going to read through every response so forgive any of these that are duplicates. The things I didn't know about before are fairly personal - not as in "won't share" but as in "specific to my situation". I was a revision, and so the only things that have surprised me are relative to my previous WLS, or the things you have to be living it to know whether or not they even apply to you. But I'm a researcher, and started looking into VSG about 5 years ago. Not a lot will escape those two conditions. However, I see a lot of new people "shocked" to learn lots of things, so here are some that I see come up a lot: You will probably lose a good amount of your hair (I'd estimate 20% - 40%) starting about 2 or 3 months after surgery. It's possible to dump with the sleeve. Most people seem surprised to learn this. In fact, there's already been a thread on it today. It's possible to develop intolerances to foods with the sleeve. Not "sleeve doesn't like it" but actual intolerances. Reflux is a fairly common side effect. Reflux over time can lead to additional issues such as Barret's. Reflux can be helped (I won't say controlled) by medications - PPIs and the like. PPIs are currently under a lot of scrutiny for their long-term effects, i.e. bone density. [*]Your tastes can change with this surgery. So can the foods that work for you. These aren't necessarily slow changes. You'll probably be eating low-carb, at least for a while, and that can bring its own complications: "Ketosis" breath Low potassium may result in muscular cramps particularly in the legs/feet Pooping might totally change. In too many ways than I can list here, but let's just say there aren't really any good ways. Etc. [*]You may have to take Fiber supplements and/or laxatives for quite some time, maybe permanently. But maybe you'll never need one. Just gotta wait and see. [*]Since this is not a malabsorptive procedure, it's still possible to gain weight. You're still accountable for the things you eat. I'm surprised to see others surprised by this. [*]When food doesn't "sit well" it can be surprisingly painful, and can hurt in places that initially won't make sense (referred pains). [*]You may or ay not have problems with nausea. I've had no nausea, and no vomiting -- but I've had my share of discomfort. [*]Your body will probably start to make new noises. Gurgles, burps that aren't burps (I call them nurps), etc. They may or may not go away. [*]Your hunger may significantly diminish, or go away completely. But it might also remain consistent. Our fundus is the primary place where Ghrelin is produced, but it's not the only place. Think this is only a good thing? Lots of studies right now are pretty consistently linking Ghrelin to things like memory and cognitive function, is in - not enough Ghrelin, so in 50 years you may be skinny & have no idea why. [*]Lots of aspects of general weightloss tend to be forgotten or overlooked: things like your feet get smaller, your fingers, etc. Medication dosages may also need to be recalibrated You will need to actively adjust your caloric intake (you won't have much say in it for a while, tho) to adjust for your shrinking body - needs can change by 1000 calories, easily. Don't get in a "rut" and assume things will be forever this way, or that. There's more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my Ghrelin-starved brain. -
I'm new here and live over on the Kitsap Penisula in Bremerton. Yeah, I'm a navy wife. LOL!! I just had the Lapband Removal and Sleeve Revision, and an Incision Hernia Repair on 3-19-13 at Madigan Army Medical Center. I "was" scheduled with Dr Sebesta, but he had to go out of town. Dr Hague stepped in and did my surgery. Feeling fine a week out and just want to say hello!!

I was at NWWLS for my band but I'm not impressed with their doctors. Srikanth will do the whole thing in one day ( I'm having band to sleeve revision). I wish my band surgeon was still doing bariatric surgery....he was the best.

Lower-end BMI Sleeve Surgery. Any others?
Zane's Mom replied to Kevineastwest's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Superslim I am super confused. Have you gained 22 pounds since the revision? Or did you gain 22 pounds during the slipped period. And if you are hungry and still on fluids then it will get better when you start a normal diet. I'm 5 & 1/2 months and I can really get hungry. Starving like the old me, but a few bites later full like the new me. You really are going to have to cut out the bad habits. I don't go to any fast food any longer. I can stop and get a shake at a convenience store or a P3 lunchable at a grocery or many other things. I try to have stuff with me or make sure I'm home during meal times. I hope the sleeve will give you the permanent tool to get back to your goal and maintain !!!! -
Newbie looking for Oct sleevers!
chellede replied to Marielbx's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Live - I swear, we could easily turn this thread into an IVF thread with all the things we have been through. Yet lets hope this helps ! Are you going to wait a year before trying? I was told I had to. ... Oooh ! That's good there's a person here in the states that helps you ! I always wondered how that worked. Why did you decide on a revision of the band? (don't need to answer if you don't want to) Kelew - Keeping fingers crossed on the appeal !!!!!!!! -
Let's Get it Started, July 2017 Sleevers!
A_new_sara replied to Redo2017's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm not telling anyone because I'm a revision from lapband to sleeve.. and a lot of people in my life are extremely judgemental on how I spend my money and feel like I wasted all this money on a lapband, that it would be foolish to get another surgery that is "unecessary" they just don't get it. 8 years of this is enough.. I am telling my co workers because they are extremely supportive and a few very close friends, most are also revision patients that I met when I originally got my band.. -

Revision date November 8th. Any surgery twins?
Sunniblue20 replied to Sunniblue20's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Sometimes you feel like your the only one that “didn’t do it right” because you see all these success stories online but there are many of us in this boat otherwise revisions wouldn’t be needed. My doctor told me not to expect too much but I’m going to work hard on this. Im determined. We got this -

Bypass Revision due to pouch opening being widely dilated?
KarenLR75 replied to KarenLR75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm not sure...surgeon just said that tightening that opening alone would not cause major weight loss. Unsure if during a full blown revision if they also reduce the size of the 'pouch' and tighten that opening. I would think 'pouch size' is a possible element as well but this doctor did not elaborate, I'm assuming since the goal of my revision if not to lose more weight maybe? If I ever get time with him outside of the investigation in the OR, I will ask. -
Count me IN!!!!! My revision is very superficial. I will have it done Monday and plan to keep going without much problem. Kathy, I have not taken Dylan to the doctor, but I probably will on Monday. I really think it is ok, but I want our Dr to look at it just to be sure. Even being a nurse, I don't like burns..

Hey everyone! Renewed wanted me to let ya'll know that she is home and the procedure went well. They decided to do it at the hospital and it was a little more involved than they thought it would be. They did some revision on both sides in the front. She was starting to hurt so she is resting now. Hope you heal soon Renewed!!

12 Days Post Op And Swollen
MinaKai replied to MinaKai's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I haven't had much trouble with pain, still a little tender but that's about it. I only have one problem right now, which unfortunately is a major one, I can't keep fluids down. I'm just hoping I don't need anything more than an edg with dilation. A revision surgery would be a nightmare. I'm just relying on prayers and steroids to get me through Tuesday when I see the dr. I do have occasional gas pains but no big deal. I'd give anything to keep fluids down. -
Anyone know of Dr De Bruyne Chris
Freckles replied to susanlondon's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi Neennicole and welcome to this forum. I think your best bet would be to email Dr Chris and explain that you are only in the UK for a certain time. I'm sure he'll try to fit you in. Yes you can get fills in the US, but be very careful where you go for them, as if someone punctures your tubing you will not be covered for revision surgery by Dr Chris. Your best bet would be to take out some sort of insurance plan if you dont have it already. Good luck hunny. -
Hi! I think it sounded positive and he probably told you more about what he's thinking than he did with any of the others. He is confused as to what he wants to do but maybe after speaking with you, it will help him define it better for himself. Best wishes!! Revision? Are you okay? Hope you feel better soon! Congratulations!!! If you want it bad enough, you'll work to get back on track and get as much of that off as you can. I know you can do it!!!!! Sounds like it went well! And a thank you email is a great idea! Best wishes!!! Sorry you have to wait but good that you'll get to see your own doc. I'd rather wait too. Unless I just can't for some reason. Best wishes on getting those steroid lbs off! I know that's frustrating. We call it short-timer's disease here! LOL! You and DH are very smart. Money isn't everything, tho it does play a HUGE role! LOL! But yes, when it's a small step pay difference, being happier in your job is worth the pay "cut" that comes with it. So all of you are on my prayer list. Jobs, health, happiness, safety in travels, etc. Speaking of travel, Tap should be home tonight or tomorrow, right? Hope she had a good week and it wasn't too horrible for her. Beth, since I've been tracking my food again, I've been losing! I lost 1.6 this week, even with a couple of higher calorie days and no exercising. Still haven't got out for any walks. Yuck! Hope everyone has a great day! TTFN!

When Life Gets In The Way Of The Sleeve
ribearty replied to No game's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am very fortunate to have a great support system with my family. When I first got home my husband would ask me, "Do you mind if I eat this?" My answer to him was, "Just because I had weight loss surgery, doesn't mean you can't eat things." My biggest problem is I have been averaging a 50 to 60 hour work week for most of this year. I returned to work full time on 11/11 and have yet put in a 40 hour work week. This makes it difficult to exercise. I have had to plan and take food with me. In the past I would get in the office around 8 a.m. and sometimes not leave until 10 p.m. or later. I didn't know when I left that morning that I would be there. Prior to surgery, I would buy something from the vending machine. I knew that this would be an obstacle for me after surgery, and knew that the long hours would still be happening so I made sure to plan for it. Life gets in the way of lot of things. You have to make the best of it or learn from previous times so you make a better choice the next time. Laura, you have done a fantastic job this past year and I know you will continue into year two. I know for me I will have to plan for awhile until these good habits become automatic. Even with that I will need to examine and make sure that I stay on the path with the best decisions. Since I am a revision patient, I look at this as a second opportunity and want to make the most of it. I believe that by not following the rules and thinking I knew more about what I could eat contributed to my situation. It is time to put the pride away and listen to someone else who has helped others be successful with their weight loss surgery. -
Surgery didn’t work?
Abeille213 replied to Lacecute's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just be careful with the doctor in this video. His ideas have been repeatedly debunked by a multitude of bariatric surgeons. There’s a ton of research that goes against everything he says. I think a lot of WLS patients listen to him because they want to believe he’s right. Don’t exercise after surgery?? Awesome! It sounds great, right? But there is zero scientific research to support his claims and a ton of scientific research that debunks his claims. So, just keep that in mind. On June 12, 2017 I had my gallbladder removed, my lapband removed and revised to an RNY. HW: 402, SW 306, CW 249, GW 185 -
ESG Progress Updates For Accountability
hope4momof4 replied to hope4momof4's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
Wow! You are basically telling my story. I thought I was the only one!! I was just like you so hopeful and motivated that this would be the answer to my weight problem. I , like you, lost only 11-12 pounds, (maybe less not completely sure of my exact starting weight) in the first week or two and then nothing. I’ve been the same weight for over 6 weeks. I had my ESG on 2/6 so I’m even further post op than you. I’m having the same feelings. I’m frustrated because at this point I’m disappointed in myself and feel like I wasted $10,000. I didn’t feel this way in the beginning or preop. I was so excited and hopeful, heck I started this topic!!😔😔. I’d love to give you advice on what we should do but I’m sorry I don’t have any. It may console you a little to know that you are not the only one. I’d love to keep in touch with you for perhaps some support. Should we look into revision? Do you go to a nutritionist every month? I go to my nutritionist every month and she seems to think that I’m fine losing very, very slowly. All she recommends is that I log everything I eat and up my exercise. I’m with you dear very frustrated! I’m hoping others further postop can chime in and give us real advice or comfort. -
If I take 1 bite to many, I lose it all. Over eating is very hard....at least for me! Revision 1/31/13 by Dr Cabrera and Venezuela in MX
