    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

My day 16-19: I am the fine winner if the flu... good times right after surgery! I guess the upside to having 103 fever in the ER after surgery is that you definitely get bumped to the top of the list to get seen! ( some people had been waiting 5-6 hours at the hospital)

    Tell Me Your Pre-op Timeline

I had to get out my workbook for this. (3 support group meetings I attended before my first apt. to get them out of the way.) 8/22/18 - Met with surgeon, psychiatric nurse, and dietician 8/22/18 Sleep study ordered, insurance denied it, we decided not to do it 8/28/18 - Harvard Pilgrim approved my VGS surgery! 9/19/19 Upper GI series 9/28 - Blended diet review 10/10/18 - Surgical Pre-testing/Pre op weight taken 1 week reduced calorie diet, 2 shakes and a Lean Cuisine, sorry everyone who had to starve! 10/15/18 Surgery I think they did about the minimum so everyone understood what they were getting into and what they were supposed to do, and got me through it super fast! I could have called if I had more questions or needed more help. I could have gone a bit sooner but I had a work trip. So 7 1/2 weeks from start to finish!
  3. The scale in my doctor's office is wrong. It weighs me 10 lbs heavier then my scale at home. Though dr is happy with my weight loss per their scale, I wouldnt be. I sounded so lame telling them their scale is off,,,but its true! I came home and recalibrated my scale and checked it and my scale is accurate. I am seriously thinking of bringing my scale to my next appointment...( and i know their scale will weigh me a few pounds higher given its midday) Just so aggravating! My scale shows i lost 27 pounds in 30 days, theirs showed about 17. No way would i be happy with only 17 lost! Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

You can take protein powders through security. Depending on where you will be in DC, you'll likely be able to buy protein drinks here, too. Target has Premier. Also, my recollection is that you CAN carry on "medically necessary liquids". Its worth contacting TSA, but I think you'd need a letter from your doctor saying you'd had a medical procedure and require the specific liquid, then declare it before you start TSA screening. You can take a picture or send a question to AskTSA on Facebook Messenger or Twitter. They answer questions from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET weekdays; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends/holidays. If you can eat eggs - a lot of the fast causal places will have eggs. I was stuck out one day and got an egg white cup at Cosi - FAR too much food (think 12 oz of egg whites), but I ate what I was supposed to and tossed the rest.

    Dreams

I am hopeful, yes I am. Still hospitalized, have been since Wednesday November 28, my first guess was dismissal tomorrow, now maybe 35% ? I now have a PICC line in my upper left arm, inner side toward my body. And I have a bag of TPN RUNNING IN continuingly, tonight if all is well they will start cycling it to prepare me for exit. But I WILL go home with the PICC line still in. I need to be on a higher protein count than my current diet will provide to heal my rampant crop of ulcers. Every endoscopy they are discovering more, I have followed every instruction, taken every med, tried to ingest as much as my tempermental gastric pouch, Precious Pouch, will permit. Last I attemped to eat something she in the past had accepted, over 40 minutes to swallow, less than 10 minutes to empty back up. And that had been happening pretty frequently. So here. I BE! PICC SITE- not excessively painful, feels like it was attached with a staple gun, but am learning how to pivot with it, got to take a walk with Physical Therapy pushing my pole, pretty fine to do. Alerted my nurse I was on the verge of an breakdown in my backside, near and into a**. crack, had one before, k,ow how it feels, have a shock- absorb dressing. And Oh I Does Help! Otherwise turning the corner on a slow pivot toward renewed health!
  6. I'm 4 months out. I get on average 700-800 calories a day. Some days more most days closer to 700. I'm just starting to get energy back. I'm still in bed by 9:30-10. Which presurgery never happened. My concern is when I start exercising full out how am I going to get more in and keep energy up. I exercise 3x wk doing cardio. Want to do Zumba and weights but that's going to eat up alot of calories lol

    September bypass buddies??

@MissPoodle, I am not even able to do that at this time. The arthritis in my left knee is so bad that if I think about trying to walk anywhere my body sends me nasty messages. Right now all I am able to do is peddle at least 10 to 15 minutes a day.

    October 2018 Sleevers

I wouldn’t follow what he gave you for a number. I would follow the nutritionist diet.. I saw my surgeon on the 13th of November and I had surgery on the 24th of October (just shy of 3 weeks apart he told me that he was surprised I had only lost 10 pounds and should have at least hit 25-30 lbs since surgery (in 3weeks??) that’s crazy. I brought this up at my follow up appointments with my nutritionist which was November 22nd and she raised her eyebrows and said he’s nuts and you’re losing weight at a good rate of 2lbs a week. She said ignore him and follow the diet. I felt like failure when I saw him and I thought about sabotaging myself because of it! I really had to mentally push myself pass what he had said and redirect my focus on healthier thoughts so I increased walking and added 3lb weights to my workouts. My surgery weight was 242.2 and today I’m 225.6 I’m happy with my progress.. pay no mind to that Drs stupid comments I think he’s an idiot for saying what he said. You’re doing great and doing what you can .. stick to your nutritionist diet

    Drink options

I thought I was drowning the day after surgery when the nurse gave me a thimble of water. It hurt so bad and came back up instantly. They made me keep trying and eventually I could drink a little bit. Fast forward 7 months and I can drink almost as much as I like as long as it is flavored water. Plain water still makes me gag! My surgeon says it is a texture issue with my pouch. I cannot even take my vitamins or pills without flavored water. I love herbal teas and drink them with SPLENDA when I am on the road traveling, but coffee makes me ill every time I chance it which is about once every 10 days at this stage. My Dr says to keep trying as it may change over time, but I think I am done with coffee for the immediate future. He says I can drink as much flavored sugar free water as I want. My favorite flavored water is Mountain Explosion (mountain dew without carbonation) and AW Root Beer flavors as they are delicious and go down easy.

After my surgery I'm looking forward to...............

Today I'm looking forward to: Not feeling fat Buying small clothes Making people wonder how I did it Seeing an old boyfriend by chance while looking all slim and gorgeous Working out without a huge tshirt on to cover all my stuff Wearing full seat riding breeches that fit and don't look like 10 pounds of sausage in a 9 pound bag

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

Hi everyone, new to this site! I was sleeved on 11/19/18. My energy is coming back & I’m able to drink & eat my puréed foods without the feeling in my sternum, but struggling to get the full 64 oz in. I think my biggest struggle is that I feel fine & have to remind myself I still cannot eat yet. I miss chewing!
  12. Well to update, now in OSU- Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, my original Bariatric Hospital. Admitted Wednesday November 28, had PICC line inserted in upper inner left arm Thursday November 29, started on TPN at 10:30 PM Friday November 30, should be running until 11:59 PM tonight December 1st, guess I am tolerating it well. Estimated Dismissal Date is 12/03/2018 barring anything worse happening. My life is a cheap unrealistic soap opera at times.
  13. Hello All! Anybody miss ME? Two guesses and the first one doesn't count. I am in my Hospital, yep the self-same Ohio State University-Wexner Medical Center you've heard me talk about. Lets see, where shall I start? Last Tuesday I saw Dr Needleman himself, no not just a nurse-practitioner, the head honcho, numero uno top dog. Met his very nice resident Steven Scoville MD, very nice guy. He said when he set eyes on me You don't feel good , do you? Usual spunky me would have said. No S***, I did feel crappy, just hung my head and nodded, told him I Feel broken, like a toy that has been played with too hard and thrown to one side. Well he dicussed th8ngs with me, said even if I were broken Dr Noria his partner and he knew h9w to fix me. Lest than 5% of patients have this torture road to recovery. Had to have a bag of saline IV fluid instilled before I went home. And he reminded me to be sure to keep my Endoscopy appointment with Dr Noria, that way they would be able to gauge what was going on internally. My Wednesday appointment was 8AM with Dr Noria, so we left Mount Vernon a little after 6 AM, figuring we would be back home 10 or 10:30. Not how things played out. Dr Noria got down into my stomach and intestine and things were not well. Stomach wall, red swollen, not able to do dilatation, and not only were my 5 ulcers not healing but I was starting to ulcerate further down into the bowels of ME. So I became a guest and here I remain.Thurday night I had a PICC line installed, last night the first TPN was started which should conclude t9night at 11:59 PM. Don't know what I am supposed to feel like so guess I am tolerating it well. Luckily it's in my upper inner left arm, was fearful it would go into my subclavian and be in my chest wall. And I really didn't WANT that very much. Why do I have the TPN? Dr Noria was concerned that I would not be able to do the 90-120 grams protein needed daily P.O. or that maybe the protein I was ingesting wasn't breaking down and assimilating bodily. This bypasses the G.I. system and gives it a chance to heal up. I have an intake sheet. to fill out l8ke I did when I had my RnY surgery. It may be a bit of "busy work" to keep me occupied, but I have my infantry of 1oz cups, as I empty 1 I mark it down, when they all are empty I refill them with Peach- Mango liquicell, and here we go again! Estimated date of dismissal. will be 12/03/2018, that is if things go well with no set backs. Des N and Steven have turned me over this weekend to the junior residents, although Dr Needleman is back-up and attending on call. I am actually starting to feel like myself more and more. Oh still not pain-free totally but it is no longer a 4 alarm fire in my guts and for that I am grateful. How are all you doing?👍📆😝🏣

  15. I was sleeved 10/29 and am trying to set myself up on a schedule to do measurements and progress pics. I had originally thought I'd do them every month. But I did them this week and it was a bit dispiriting. Pics look the same. Lot inches in my bust/chest and legs, but almost none in my hips/waist. I've also lost a fair amount in my fingers (so much that my rings no longer fit on my ring finger without my being afraid they'll fall off, so I wear them on my middle finger). And this after losing 20# since surgery and 40# total. So I know its working, and I'm not going to get discouraged. All that said - what is a good schedule for doing progress pics/measurements? Thanks!

    Tell Me Your Pre-op Timeline

I'm curious what steps everyone had to take from their first surgeon visit to approval/surgery date. Did you do certain testing, if so, when was it determined you had to do it? No need for major detail unless you feel like it. I'm thinking something like an easy to read timeline... Example: [date] 1st Surgeon Visit> [date] blood work , stress test, psych test, etc.> [date] insurance approval> [date] start pre-op/liver shrink diet> [date] Surgery date The reason I'm asking this is because #1 I'm marginally impatient, hate surprises and I'm trying to manage it. #2 My insurance policy that covers bariatric won't begin until 01/01/19 and I go to my first surgeon appointment this coming Monday 12/03. I'm just wondering what all I can squeeze in and get done before that 01/01/19 date. Thanks, folks! EDIT: My nutritionist person just emailed me and said the only thing I can do prior to my new insurance plan is stress test, EKG and nutrition. Everything else will have to be done closer to surgery date which is TBD.

    November 2018 Sleevers!?!?

YES! Mine has just been for the past two days (surgery on 11/19). I thought maybe I was just over doing it- I came back to work one week post op (plus I've been to basketball games all week for my kids) . I"ve had some discomfort on the left side most of the week like normal, but Thursday it began to really hurt and it hurt in my back. My SIL (whose a doctor) said it was probably all muscle related ?? Today has been better, but yesterday was rough.
  21. Scheduled for 12/19 so ready
  22. I have been approved and scheduled for 12/19 and start my diet tomorrow.
  23. Hello all.... THis is my first post but I have been lurking and reading for weeks. My insurance doesn't have any requirements for weight checks or weight loss....but my doctor requires 5%. I have been STRUGGLING for the past month and half losing and gaining the same 6 pounds. I have to lose about 10 lbs total now before Dec 13th....any advice. This is the last step for me to get a date and I am really starting to want to give up. I am following around a 1400 calorie plan most days and not drinking any alcohol and at least 100ounces of water a day, sometimes more. I have a lot of excess weight to lose, so it's not that I only have a few pounds to lose..... SHort of dropping my calories to around 800 a day (which I know works), I am not sure how else I will lose this weight in two week.
  24. Hi. I'm a Newbie. My gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled for January 2nd. I started the process in May @ 307 lbs (5'7"), and so far have lost 30 lbs with eating modification & exercise. Currently, my exercise consists of weight training and some walking. Having torn meniscus in both knees doesn't permit a lot of walking. For years I used to be an avid gym freak years ago, but shoulder and foot injuries/surgeries, along with personal circumstances had put a damper on that for some time. While I'm looking forward to the surgery and a new beginning, my biggest cause for anxiety is the resulting loose skin. I carry a lot of muscle mass right now, and I'm concerned that the fat loss, and the muscle loss of not working out, will exasperate the situation. I'm aware that loose skin comes with the territory, but does anyone have any advise on how to minimize it? Thanks for your support, Johnny B.
  25. I shared this on a form, but I also want to save it as a status update.

I had to lay down my rant about my mini emotional breakdown during the pre-op diet.

I have been taking my time to get ready for my pre and post op diet, since August. Buying some little things here and there to make sure I was completely stocked up. My surgery is not scheduled until 12/12/2018. I knew I would have to do the diet for 2 weeks before my surgery, so I had plenty of time to get everything together. One of the last things I purchased was my broth. I decided to wait until around Thanksgiving to purchase it, thinking it may be on sale since it is a thanksgiving hot item.

A few days before Thanksgiving, I went to my local Wally world (I live within 10 miles of 2 Walmart superstores and a Walmart neighborhood Grocery Store) and picked up 2 boxes of the chicken broth and a bone beef broth. And stored it away I the pantry.

    Fast forward to 11/24

I was required to begin the pre-op diet until 11/28. I decided to jumpstart my pre-op diet a few days early, just to give myself a few days to work any kinks out. For the first 3 days. I took in Protein Shakes for all 3 meals per day. But by the 4th day, I wanted something warm for dinner, because I was fighting off a cold.

Now by this day, I was definitely feeling the sugar and carb withdrawal. I was tired, cranky and had a little bit of brain fog. I decided that today I would have broth! I was super excited. I took my broths out of the cabinet, got my pot ready on the stove (yes, I was so excited I was going to heat it up on the stove to make me feel as if I was really preparing myself a grand meal). I opened the top, only to find the security seal was broken. I told myself “Okay no problem, I have 2 other boxes.” I proceeded to open the next box only to find the same thing. I looked at the last box and thought, “well this it, I will go back to the store tomorrow and get more.” I opened the 3rd box only to find the seal on it was also broken. I was furious! I collected myself and decided to take all 3 boxes back to the store, the only problem was I no longer had the receipt. Dag Nabit! By now I am thinking “Well just chalk it up and go to the store.” Now by this time, I am getting very hungry and I am ready to have my dinner.

I leave my home and head to one of the other Wally Worlds that are close to my home. I go to the store and purchased 2 new boxes of broth. I get home and open the first box…safety seal is broken! I open the second box and the safety seal is broke! WHAT, HOW AND WHO WOULD DO THAT TO BROTH! BROTH! By this time, I have broken down crying. I mean balling!

My poor husband hears me in the kitchen and comes in and asks what’s wrong, I just slide to the kitchen floor and through tears explain what happened and that I have nothing to take in for dinner but a shake, and I really wanted something warm on my stomach.

I sat there and cried for about 5 minutes while my husband looked in the cabinet to attempt to find something that I would be able to have for dinner. (eventually, he did but after my breakdown.)

I wondered if I was making the right decision to have the surgery. Never once did I even think of eating any of the other food that was in the kitchen or pantry. I was purely upset that I had now purchased 5 boxes of broth and they were all tainted. And Now I have to drink a cold shake.

Then I thought, you’re not crying about wanting the other foods you’re not supposed to eat during the pre-diet, your crying about the food you can normally have but can’t because of the broken protective seal!

Right then and there I knew I was committed, and I was making the right decision and could make it through this.

Thank you for letting me share

Awwwww...that's great that you realized that your mind was made up and you are now committed. I probably would have reacted the same way as you lol. Congratulations on your upcoming surgery and stay determined and motivated. You got this girl!! 👍😉
