sick and gassy from one protin bar
JamieLogical replied to Lisa1171's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Not all Protein bars are created equal, so don't assume you will run into the same problem with other brands. As for getting enough protein post-op, I am 5 months out and still rely on 2 protein bars a day, but that's because my nutritionist wants me at 100 grams per day, whereas it seems like most people on here only aim for about 65 grams. Pre and post-op I drank protein shakes, but made the transition to protein bars a few months post-op. They are more convenient for me as a "grab-and'-go" sort of option. The rest of my protein comes from dairy and meat. I have a cheese stick as a morning snack and greek yogurt as an afternoon snack. For lunch and dinner, I always have some sort of meat. It's usually just the protein from whatever my husband makes for dinner. So if he makes shrimp and Pasta, I eat the shrimp. If he makes chicken and rice, I eat the chicken. If he makes pork enchiladas, I eat the pork. If he makes meatloaf and mashed potatoes, I eat the meatloaf. You get the picture. At 5 months post-op I can usually do between 2 and 4 ounces of meat per meal, depending on the type of meat and how it's served. -
I don?t understand my band!
michellehoeffel replied to Hopes of a Dream!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do have days like that. On the days that I am tight, I will try to stick to softer foods (yogurt, eggs, chili, etc). Mornings everyday is not good for me. I am so tight that sometimes liquid takes time to go down. With that I just stick with Protein shakes. You will learn to know the band, it just takes time. -
I don't believe that any foods are off limits except the high fat, high carb, full of sugar foods. I have eaten prime rib with no issues. I can eat most foods but some days they just don't work for me. It's really a trial and error thing for all of us. I can eat rice I just choose not too. I have eaten Pasta but don't make a habit of it. I find that good cuts of meat are better but mostly they don't work for me so I eat other things like tofu, Beans, cottage cheese, greek yogurt and other high Protein things. It's really what you can tolerate not so much what is a no no. Just be cautious when trying new things.

Heres the thing; The only time I've both felt healthy and was able to maintain my weight, I was vegan. I miss it. My first priority RIGHT NOW is to lose weight (40lbs by October), but I'd like to do it without eating meat and my system is sensitive to dairy, so while I can eat certain things (hard cheeses, yogurt and cottage) without too much problem, I can't have a lot of it. The surgeon wants me to go on a ketogenic diet. I'm ok with that but really upset with the amount of meat they are suggesting. I don't want to drone on and on, because I don't want people to think I judge them for their dietary choices, it just really bothers me to eat meat and the amount that they are suggesting is ENORMOUS! (most meat has no carbs and is high protein) I spiritually can't do that. I'm willing to give in and eat meat several times a week in order to add variation and follow the diet more easily, but that is the most I can do. Does anyone else on this diet have any suggestions of other things I can eat? Because right now the list is dark leafy greens, mushrooms, seitan(if made with vital wheat gluten and not flour) and tofu. I can do a lot with these, but if any one has anything to add, I'd deeply appreciate it.

I went through the same thing at about six months. I needed to start drinking a lot more. My Dr also told me to eat things of substance cuz the foods I was eating like yogurt and granola wasn't staying with me. So I changed m breakfast to eggs and snacked on almonds when I felt hungry and it really helped. Good luck to you:)

I was pretty nauseated for about 5 days post-op. I was feeling pretty defeated too. It will improve, just do what you can for now. If you can't do protein shakes today, then let that wait for a day and try again. Are you able to eat yogurt on your plan? S.F. pudding? Maybe you will be able to tolerate them, or broth? It does get better, I promise. Keep yourself as hydrated as you can.

Ok so Im about 2 weeks post op and have to say I feel better than expected. I've lost about 17 pounds since surgery and about 30 since I began this process and even though my Wii Fit syas Im obese who cares I lost 30 pounds!!!!!!! I've started softer foods and had a nasty encounter with a saltine cracker I've been able to eat Chili and cottage cheese and yogurt some baked tater tots and croutons. True that I have to chew the hell out of it but it's well worth it. Scramble eggs go down well if not to dry and if you put some salsa on them they are excellent. If you have any pointer and or recipes please let me know MERRY CHRISTMASS!!!!!!!!!!

Eating wise, no special strategy or secrets. I just ate/eat less consistently, day in day out, than I did before banding. I eat from all food groups and I have the occasional treat. I dont count Protein, calories, fat, carbs. Today is a typical day - a handful of raw macadamias for Breakfast, I have a yogurt for morning tea, about a cup of vegie and lentil Soup for lunch, when I get home from work is usually when I want something sweet, my son made some great choc chip Cookies the other night, I'll probably have one with a cuppa. dinner tonight is going to be tacos made with home made cilli and salad ingredients. I dont do any products like shakes and bars, I consider them processed foods and not the healthiest choices. I cook from scratch and try to include plenty of fresh produce, I buy organic most of the time. The one thing I think really made a difference to me was running - an hour most days of the week. I wont ever give that up.

I had a fill on Thursday. I now have 3 cc in my 11cc band. I stayed on liquids Thursday and Friday and most of yesterday. I had some mashed potatoes last night and after just a couple little bites, my back started killing me. And now this morning I tried some yogurt, same thing. Just a couple bites and my back starts to really hurt, right between my shoulder blades and I start sliming a bit. Think I should call him and get some taken out? Or wait it out a couple more days and see if it gets better? This is only my 2nd successful fill since I got banded. I hat port problems and just got it fixed about a month ago, so I feel like I'm starting all over again! <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I have a protein shake for breakfast. Mid morning is a piece of cheese or Greek yogurt. Lunch is a salad with grilled chicken, or 2 hardboiled eggs (no yolk) and a piece of cheese, dinner is a little tricky sometimes. Sometimes I'll have an omelet with feta cheese and mushrooms, sometimes I just pick at things, like triscuits and hummus, maybe a portobello burger (no bread), etc. I drink approximately 64 ounces of liquid a day.

Had a great weekend, including Friday. Friday I tried to not write down what I ate and just concentrated on how much I was eating, and to be honest I had a really hard time with it. It's definetly mind over matter which sucks and I'm hoping I can work on that eventually. Anyway, Friday night went to the dbf house for dinner, he ordered Chinese, I had crabmeat rangoon and a small thing of pork fried rice and that filled me up. Saturday I was cleaning like crazy all day, I had eggbeaters with cheese and some sausage in the morning, a chobani with some granola and yogurt raisins for lunch and had corned beef, cabbage and carrots for dinner (corned beef is disgusting! Never tried it before, not my favorite cut of meat, dbf loved it!). On Sunday my parents called me early in the morning and wanted to meet up in Newburgh, NY for brunch (Newburgh is halfway between the two of us, they live in NY I live in CT). So much fun I don't know why we didn't think of doing this sooner. It's an inconvenience for me to drive 3 hours back and forth, and I usually have to take a half day off on Friday, this worked out perfect. I had a mushroom and cheese omlette some hashbrowns and rye toast, and that's all I ate for the day, except for a handful of trail mix. Today I'm back at work, I'm hoping the week goes by quick, I took next Monday off, to recover from Super Bowl (go pats!). I have an appointment at my surgeon today at 4pm, I'm nervous to see how much I lose/don't lose in the past two weeks, my last appointment was on January 16th and I was down 21 pounds from my weight on my surgery date. I'm hoping they bump me up to 2 ccs in my band and see if that helps, if not it's only 4 weeks and I go back again for another fill. NOT GIVING UP THIS TIME!

Just curious - I had my last fill on 9.11 and have been eating fine - last night i overate but not too severely but today I woke up so tight my chest hurt a little - haven't really been that tight before. Tried drinking tang, coffee and yogurt drink and all came up. I seem to be able to keep my saliva down but still haven't drank anything and its noon. Should I just stay off everything liquid and solid until dinner - or is this something to be concerned about?

I will start with 1/4 cup of yogurt or cream of wheat,if you feel like you eat a bite more go for it. Just listen to your sleeve

It took me quite a while before I could get my Fluid levels where they wanted. At two weeks, I was still on liquids, so I couldn't eat eggs. My advice is to go slow but go consistently. If you are trying to get fluids and Protein in, it helps when you make your fluids have protein in them. It also helps to up protein levels. Try doubling up your protein intake by adding a Protein powder to something that has protein in it. I would add vanilla-flavored powder to my yogurt or pudding. You can add yogurt to your Protein shake as well as milk, powdered milk and the protein powder. Tofu can be added to things as well to increase protein intake. I also like to add cheese including cottage cheese.

How do you get enough fiber to help with elimination?
JulieNYC replied to Painter Girl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I eat 1/2 cup fiber one cereal in my yogurt most mornings and that seems to do the trick. -
I got permission to start cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. They said they recommend 2% or lower but all I could find at the local store was 4%. Am I okay to have that until I can go into town to the major grocer? I didn't know if the recommendation was based on calorie/fat diet wise or if more fat will do damage or be hard to digest? It doesn't seem like that big of a difference. And I really don't want to wait Haha I am ready for a Protein besides those friggin shakes.

June 14, 2008 Down 4 pounds in 24 hours is quite amazing to me, however, I realize that the pounds are going to just drop off here at first. Yesterday was my first day on a Pre-Op two week diet. I had 1 Slim Fast Optima, 1 Weight Control Quaker Oatmeal, a serving of grapes, 1/2 an apple, 1 can of vegetarian vegetable soup, one 8 oz glass of skim milk with a packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added) mixed in, and 1 cup of no-fat cottage cheese. Oh and of course plenty of water, which I love. Actually, it wasn't so bad. I kept myself busy with reading, computer work, laundry. That's the key. I need to redirect my life. I'm looking into starting my own web site so that will take some time. This morning I got up at 7:00 and took a walk with the dogs. We walked down to the pond, which is a little ways away, downhill. The dogs loved the water and romped and played. So they got their exercise too. The trudge back up the hill was a killer, but I know it will get easier with time. If I consider my alternatives, (heart attack, stroke, diabetes, death), I rather like this hiking up and down hills. The Slim Fast tasted better this morning: Strawberry Cream, which I thought would be delicious, turns out NOT to be. Plus I had a yogurt, Activia, which I didn't get in yesterday. All the foods I mentioned are all that I will eat for the next two weeks. This was given to me by the dietitian. Why, I bet I lose 20 pounds even before surgery! The dietitian explained to me that the reason for this diet is to help the liver to lose weight. Fatty tissue built up around the liver is not good and hinders absorption of proper nutrients. I know there is more to it than that. I will need to research that again. So, I'm off and running. Well, actually, not running yet. That will come later, I hope.

I'm on Day 11, too. Up to about 600-700 calories a day now. I woke up starving last night and ate a little container of applesauce. I'm hungry (and maybe you are too) because I'm not getting enough calories in the day. The applesauce worked but a wiser choice would have been yogurt since it has protein.

Post-Op meals
mbrinmn replied to 2NewBeginningsxoxo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You'll be surprised that your plate can look like any normal plate of food. However, you will only be able to eat a tiny portion, so have lots of Ziplok bags and storage containers on hand. As I mentioned to another woman on a different message board, I bought a bunch of large Water bottles and cups. I keep them all over the house, practically in every room, including the basement. Every time I get close to one, I take 3 or 4 sips. Unlike others, I have had no terrible issues with dehydration or balancing liquid intake vs. food intake. I do get dry mouth and my skin is dryer than usual, but not too, too bad. My typical day of food looks like: A Protein shake and a 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt with maybe some museli or fruit mixed in. I don't have any hunger pangs at all, so I have to remind myself to eat a decent lunch...proteins first, the good carbs (dark green vegetables), then if there's room left, that where the bad carbs go in (bread, rice, pasta). I usually eat a small type of protein for dinner...a piece of chicken or meatloaf along with some cottage cheese. I eat out all the time and bring home food for 4 more meals. I have treats like Cold Stone Creamery ice cream, but just the baby scoop. I have not had any cravings and I do not miss anything that I thought I'd be sacrificing, like my beloved donuts or things like bread and cake. During this Halloween season, I allow myself one piece of candy from our company candy dish per day, but I don't always feel hungry for candy. I don't miss not having chocolate or sweet things at all. But if there is any around, I don't deny myself a bite. I think a lot of it is mind over matter. You have to really dedicate yourself to using your new tool to most efficient way, otherwise, it's just a waste of major surgery. Also, you'll be amazed at how your new, tiny stomach will be sure to tell you when it is full. Just one bite too much and you'll have a cramp or two to remind you that it's time to stop. Another bite too much and your food come up the same way it went down. There are a lot of excellent cookbooks for people who have had bariatric surgery. I bet you won't every feel hungry or deprived once you get used to your new stomach. -
A few things: 1) If you are unclear on what the doctor or nurse has said, you need to tell them that. It is their job to make sure you understand. Ask them for specific examples. 2.) The folks here have posted some suggestions but you have to try. I did some things in the nutra bullet, but mostly I made things up according to my taste buds. My handbook sites examples such as a soft scrambled egg for breakfast., a Protein shake mid morning, 4 tbsp. of tuna fish for lunch, 4 tbsp of chicken for dinner and a shake in the evening. Here's how I make my soft scrambled egg: I take 1 egg, tsp of plain greek yogurt (I use Fage 0%), I whip that together and top it with a bit of shredded cheddar. I either cook it on the stove in no stick pan stirring constantly or I pop i in the microwave for 1 minute. If microwaving it will be a bit under done when you take it out. Stir it together and pop it back in for another 10 seconds then chec to bring out and stir again. You want all of your food at this stage to be fairly moist. You might add some broth to any meats you puree. If they are too dry they may be difficult to swallow and digest.

First week or two post-op...how much protein did you/are you getting in?
oldoneyoungagain replied to sageandcoyesmommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I still seem to be in the mind set I have to drink clear liquids, so thanks BBdoodle for making me rethink what the heck. So later will fix a chocolate, almond milk, with some greek yogurt and make a smoothie. My doctor wants between 70-80 gms of protein. Right now I'm drinking 34 oz of crystal light and protein and sipping that takes hours. -
Another Protein Shake Question
thinoneday replied to Teresa 47's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
bless your heart, it is pretty bad when something gets sicking. . .i don't drink them everyday, only every now and then. . .if i find that i want to eat something, i'll try to substitute the meal for one Protein Drink, usually it's thirst and not hunger and the Protein shake does good for me that way. . i have heard along the vine and my doctor, that as long as you get in your 70 grams of protein per day your ok. . it doesn't necessarily have to be with the shakes. . so i count protein grams. . . lots of cheeses, yogurts, soft meats likes chicken and fish. . . good luck! -
I didn't puree anything either. I had a scrambled egg (which were allowed by my plan in the puree phase) daily, Protein shakes at least once a day, and greek yogurt every day. Not much variety- but at that point I really didn't care, I was just happy not to have shakes all day long!
