  1. I am chronically low on D also!! I think it's due to my past 10 years as a vegan but went to Vegetarian about 3 years ago- BUT I still don't drink milk and I hate the sun LOL. Thankfully my Dr is proactive, and she put me on a weekly dose 2 weeks ago. Praying it's helping! I have the list of vitamins and I am sooooo confused, even though I am a Lapband patient (which basically tells you I NEVERRRR took my vitamins all these years) - my friend who is sleeve to bypass made herself a daily color chart, to help learn, I think I will do the same.

I've been very specifically told that all carbonated beverages after surgery are completely off the table for a number of reasons including the high risk of stretching of the stomach pouch, suppression of nutrient absorption, bloating, irritation of the stomach lining, and especially in the case of regular sugared versions, they're 100% empty calories. There is also a study that was done by the University of Wisconsin that found soda and other carbonated drinks decrease weight loss after bariatric surgery and that they heavily impacted how much weight patients lost. Over 80% of patients who quit drinking soda after surgery achieved their weight loss goals while almost 50% of those who continued their drinking habits had unsatisfactory results. University of Wisconsin predictors of weight loss after gastric bypass study The section that addresses soda consumption is 3.3.1 with the breakdown in Table 3 Edited to insert this section quoted from the study; "Patients who did not drink soda preoperatively or quit by the surgery date were more likely to experience successful weight loss compared with those who drank soda preoperatively and were not able to quit. Given that all soda drinkers were counseled by our dieticians to quit soda consumption preoperatively, this variable may be a proxy for postoperative dietary compliance. Those who were unable to quit soda consumption preoperatively may have been less likely to comply with our dietary recommendations postoperatively. Furthermore, given that consuming liquid carbohydrates such as soda leads to poorer satiety compared with eating solid foods, caloric intake may have been significantly higher in patients who continued to drink soda postoperatively [34,35]. Given these findings, cessation of soda consumption preoperatively continues to be an important part of our preoperative bariatric patient evaluation process."

    GERD/Gastritis with Gastric Sleeve

    That happened to me. I had the option for either surgery, so I chose the sleeve because I have MS and take several meds that can't be crushes, broken, and don't come in alternate forms. For the first 8 months, things were great. Then the GERD hit, which became gastritis and esophagitis, which was so bad it caused me to need 80mg daily of Nexium (and still had gerd break through), which caused polyps to develop throughout my stomach. 4 endoscopies later, I had no choice but to get the revision to bypass. Never been better. The PPI is down to 40mg per day and at 6 weeks post op we'll go down to 20mg daily and at 10 weeks we'll see how I do without any at all. The pain from the bypass was SO much less than the sleeve, the ability to get in my pills and fluids are SO SO much better. I wish I had just done it first. As for my MS meds, I am still on them, but since we know it's basically like taking 1/2 doses (that's the way it is for extended release, but not so much full release that requires the med to be taken more than once per day) I am having a MRI at 3 months post op (unless I have break through symptoms start before that) and if that's the case, I'll go on a different med (likely an IV infusion med that I would have to do 1x per week). There's ways around things with the bypass. Talk to your psych dr and see what can be done about your meds before completely writing off the bypass. I wish I had just skipped the sleeve, to be honest.

    GERD/Gastritis with Gastric Sleeve

    Yes I am completely stable now with my medications and don't want to mess with that. Will not be able to sustain my weight loss if I lose my mind lol. I'm on an anti depressant, benzo and mood stabilizer. My psychiatrist said we may have to up my dose after gastric bypass. I really don't want to do that I'm on low to medium dose right now and want to keep it that way. My benzo could be liquid form but the rest can't. My surgeons office made it seem like since my gastritis and Gerd isn't bad enough to be on medicine (I just take Alka seltzer or Picot when it acts up) I should be fine. Sucks that my choices are basically being morbidly obese, worsening gastritis and Gerd or not getting my psych meds. Not getting my meds would be most disastrous and being obese with all my other health problems would be as well so I'm going to follow my Dr suggestion and do the sleeve and hope for the best I guess. When is your surgery date?

    GERD/Gastritis with Gastric Sleeve

    Following. I haven't had surgery yet so I can't say, but I am considering the sleeve in part because I take very important psych meds that I can't afford to have malabsorbed and mine don't come in a liquid formulation. I also have a history of GERD and am on a PPI already. I talked with my psych nurse about the meds and she said the ones with the best chance of absorbing are the sleevers, she rarely has to do more than a tweak here or there. But she's had patients with bypass and DS who have had issues with passing their meds without them breaking down, so some have had to go to liquid forms which can be more challenging depending on what med you are on. I can only metabolize about 25% of psych meds so I already have a limited pool. I don't want to limit it further, it took too much effort to find a combo that works! So I'll definitely be asking the next surgeon about this...
  6. Hey everyone! So I was scheduled for Gastric Bypass on 08/07/23, but after reviewing my medical history, my surgeon believes that Gastric sleeve would be a better option for me (due to Psychiatric medication I currently take and past history of addiction). I am a little worried because I heard the chances of GERD/gastritis are higher with the sleeve? I already suffer from occasional GERD and gastritis, but I agree with my doctor that the malabsorption of Gastric bypass probably isn't a good fit for me. Anyone get the sleeve and have issues with GERD/gastritis before? Did it improve or get worse? TIA 😊
  7. I had a revision from sleeve to bypass, and I'm 4 weeks post op. In the first 4 weeks after my sleeve, I lost 30 pounds. In the first 4 weeks after my revision, I've lost roughly 15. So yes, definitely slower. But I didn't have the revision due to not losing weight. I was actually doing great with my sleeve. I had a lot of complications with the sleeve (gastritis, esophagitis, tons of polyps all through my stomach, horrible gerd). I got my life back and am slowly getting back to the things I could do before. As long as you continue to lose, and you make sure to exercise and stick to your meal plan, you will be fine. It'll take longer, but it'll happen.
  8. I can tell you, I didn't have any restriction with my sleeve, but once I had my revision to bypass, and I hit about week 4 and could have slightly more substantial foods, oh boy THERE IS WAS!!!! I finally got to experience the elusive restriction everyone talks about lol
  9. For my original sleeve surgery, it was 2 1/2 months from my 1st visit to surgery day. For my revision to bypass, it took longer because i had several procedures I had to do before I could be medically cleared to have the revision. But as far as insurance approval, from the day it was decided I needed the revision to the day the insurance approved it was just under 2 months.
  10. Hi, I’m new here. I had a gastric bypass (RNY) on Tuesday. I was back home Wednesday and doing ok. I’m living and working abroad in a country where I am not completely fluent in the local language so I wasn’t put into a support group with locals, but hoping I can find that here. ☺️ So far, it certainly hasn’t been a pleasant experience but it’s also nowhere near the nightmare I expected. (I know it’s still early days!)

    Kaiser Richmond Pre-op

    Well here’s my update.. I had my band removed 2013 after my band slipped upwards. I couldn’t eat or drink and I became severely anemic and had severe gerd. I’ve gained over 55 pounds back. I wanted to try the bypass and held it off. I started taking Wegovy since April, I didn’t lose much and have been off it due to shortage. I hope to get back on as soon as Kaiser calls. Other than that I’m good. So glad to see the pair of you here.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Hi all November 2021 people! I want to do a little update because this thread is the only 'diary' I ever actually made - it's fascinating to look back at some of the posts we all made as we went along. I hope you are all doing really well. There aren't many of us posting regularly here any more so I hope that's because you are all too busy enjoying your new life. I am but I just like it here too, LOL. So, my current weight is 139 lbs - it's gone up and down by 2 or 3 pounds within the range 137 - 140 for the last 3 or 4 months but so far no further than that, and I don't take any particular action when those couple of pounds go on. Calorie intake is still about 1300 on weekdays and probably more like 1800-2000 at weekends now (alcohol and limited snacks). I still track everything. I walk A LOT for exercise. I stopped running after a few attempts because even though I enjoyed it it was causing me pain afterwards that lasted for days and then I couldn't do my usual walks so ended up costing me exercise time! I really want to get into some weights but I have such a busy life (excuse alert!) that I am short of time after I fit in all my walks. I am thankful every day that I had this surgery. Honestly, even if I regained every pound tomorrow it would have been worth it just to have this time feeling normal and being able to do normal things. We have a family vacation starting next week that I would have dreaded before, and now I can't wait and am signing up for every single activity along with my children. I would love to hear from anyone in the original gang who still reads but doesn't post much.

    Is it dumping or just upset stomach

    I developed allergies to foods and lactose intolerance after both of my surgeries. After my sleeve, I developed a NASTY shellfish allergy and lactose intolerance. After my revision to bypass, I developed an allergy to peanuts and an allergy to the surgical glue they used. Surgery can do weird things to the body. Major surgery like this throws the body WAY out of whack.

    Rice and noodles

    I agree with the above comments. I am 14 1/2 months out from my sleeve and 4 weeks out from my revision to bypass. Rice, noodles, pasta, potatoes, breads were all HUGE no-no foods for me. There's no nutrients in them, a TON of carbs and calories, take of valuable real-estate in your stomach that needs to have protein and veggies in it first and foremost. They don't serve any real nutritional value, and there's LOTS of foods you can use to substitute for these that are healthy, bariatric surgery friendly, and DELICIOUS.

    Alcohol consumption

    I was told 8 months with the sleeve and 1 year with the bypass, but I don't drink (don't like the taste and don't see the point in it, to be honest) so I don't partake at all. I was told to sip it very slowly and be prepared for it to hit harder and faster than normal. But again, I don't drink, so I wasn't worried about it.
  19. I was wondering if any of you who had the bypass use vitamin patches. I've been reading up on them, and I found this: "There is not enough research available at this time to promote a multivitamin patch in the bariatric population. Especially after weight loss surgery, you should be very aware of what products you are using to ensure that you are getting all the required nutrients to promote good health. Many practitioners recommend that bariatric patients stay away from multivitamin patches because if they don't work, the deficiencies can lead to severe consequences down the line." And this: "The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) says that vitamin A and B12 are deficiencies that bariatric patients experience the most, and therefore a vitamin patch simply wouldn't be adequate." I'm aware that certain vitamins do not transfer well through the skin and therefore must be ingested. However, I'd like to know about your personal experiences with vitamin patches. Any information is appreciated! Thank you!
  20. I had a gastric sleeve to bypass revision with a hiatal hernia repair on July 17. They sent me home with 15 percocets, Zofran and spasm medications. I took Tylenol and then percocet if the tylenol did not help, finished the percocets kept trying tylenol with no relief. The pain was so bad I had to call the nurse on post op day 4 and ask her for something else, she gave me flexeril. It does not help at all. I tried hot packs, gasx and the spasm medications as well. Drinking water and walking. My left side is very very tender and painful. Nurse told me it was normal since I had stitches inside in that specific side. Yesterday I went to the supermarket and i couldn't even speak or take a deep breath from the pain, it was so so bad. I'm calling the nurse back tomorrow (post op day 7) and see what else I can do. Did anybody go through this? How long does it last? I feel so discouraged and I'm regretting this surgery so so bad.
  21. So... today, my daughter and I made that TikTok chicken crust pizza at home. It was really good! I'm 1 month and 4 days out of my revision from sleeve to bypass, and I'm on regular food now. It is high in calories, but I'm sure if you choose healthier options for the ingredients, you could make it even better! I used what I already had at home because I wasn't even sure it was going to work. But there are some modifications I plan to make for when I make this again. For example, I would use reduced fat or fat-free cheeses. Those seem to be the ingredients with the highest calories. Also, I would use fresh chicken, cook it and shred it. But for this recipe, I used canned chicken breast. I'm including a pic of the pizza and a pic of the nutrition information per slice. I doubled the recipe because I was going to share it with my daughter, then I combined all the nutrition information for the whole pizza and divided by 8 slices. Take into account that a regular slice of pepperoni pizza is 313 calories, 13g protein, and 35 carbs. This one is 197 calories, 22g protein (because the crust is made of chicken, Parmesan, and egg), and 3g carbs. for the ~10" crust: -2 cans 10oz canned chicken breast in water (drained) -2 large eggs -1 cup shredded Parmesan (gonna look for a lower fat or lower cal version) Combine these 3 things and season as you like. I used Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, and some sprinkles of black pepper. NO SALT, because the canned chicken is already salty. Like my life. I mixed it all together to create the "dough." I put it on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and formed it into a thin crust (~10") and baked it at 425 for 20 minutes. my toppings: -1/3 cup Chef Boyardee Pizza sauce (again, I'm sure there's a healthier alternative) -2 cups shredded mozzarella (next time I'm using low fat or fat-free) -16 turkey pepperoni slices Once I added the toppings, I put it back in the oven for 10 minutes at 425. I did 5 min on bake and then 5 min on broil (low) because I wanted the cheese to get just a tad toasty Added all the ingredients to the Baritastic app (you can scan the barcodes of all the ingredients) and divided by 8 slices, so this is the nutrition info per slice. Yes, the slices are small like from a personal pizza, but I can't eat more than that anyway, so it was very filling! I ate half a slice then later had the other half a slice. I remembered the crust is made of chicken, so I ate slowly and gave it time to hit my tummy.That's why I was only able to do half at a time.

    Depending on your blood pressure before and after, there could be vision changes. High blood pressure effects our vision. My husband's glasses prescription changed drastically one year, and we never thought about it. A year plus later, he had a heart attack due to high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. One quadruple bypass later, on good meds, and he had to get new glasses again, almost back to the old prescription. So, maybe?
  24. I use a patch a day plus one chewable high ADEK. I don't understand a handful of day vitamins... I guess it depends on your doctor but that seems extreme. Why did you have the revision? I had to have one for gerd. I had no choice. If you had the revision for more weight loss, the consensus is that it is usually much slower IF your sleeve was done right. The reason behind this is if one ate around the sleeve, one would have a high chance of eating around the bypass.
  25. I'm the complete opposite. I love my revision. I literally feel normal (pre-any WLS) with the added benefit of controlling my weight loss. Literally the only side effect I have now is slight constipation (3 to 4g miralax a day does the trick) but I had that with the sleeve too. I wish I wasn't so scared to do the bypass in the beginning. It would've made my life so much easier. I really hope it improves for you.
