    April 2019 Surgeries!

April 23 revision from the sleeve to gastric bypass and I'm scared out of my mind but I look forward to being free of the Gerds.
  2. I am new to bariatric pal and find it a bit overwhelmed .... where to start? I’m deciding between gastric sleeve and gastric bypass, have fatty liver, hyperaldosteronism, hypertension, sleep apnea... I hope to decide this fairly soon and get my  surgery scheduled. Glad to be here and getting around a bit. I a 279 and have about 120 lbs to lose as I’m 5’ 7”. Thanks for listening!

15 days until surgery? Congrats! If there is anything I've learned about RNY, its not a miracle cure all. But here's the good news! Prior to surgery I would knock myself out trying to lose weight, with very little results. Now, I work just as hard to lose weight and am rewarded with fantastic weightloss. So, don't think the surgery is going to magically cause the weight to come off. Those whom I observed who think this have very little weightloss. Instead, realize that the surgery changes the playing field, giving you a leg up toward weightloss success, so long as you are still willing to work at it. If so, you will do fabulous. I recommend keeping a log of everything you eat, good and bad, and weigh every single day. By doing this, you will learn much about your body and how food intake affects the sale one way or the other and you will learn the boundaries unique to you and your body alone and what you can and cannot do in order to successfully lose the weight. Best wishes!! 🙂

    Alcohol

I had bypass December 3 and had my first glass of wine about 2.5 months post op. I was a big drinker before and now get buzzed fairly quickly. I’ve had liquor too, I can tolerate it well with no issue. I go to Vegas a couple of times a year and can’t imagine NOT having a drink 😊

    Bypass or Sleeve

I had bypass due to having GERD. I follow the diet to a T mostly and never feel full or restriction. The few times I’ve eaten something sweet or not on plan, no dumping or any discomfort. I’m pretty discouraged because feeling full on a small amount was my intention with having surgery. I eat my dense protein first, etc so I’m just a rare case. Since I do follow the plan I’m down 49 pounds since December 3. Do a ton of research.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Let me just say, these photos are amazing. Thanks for posting! I am shocked that you haven't had more comments about the already drastic weight loss. You can definitely see it in your face and absolutely all over. I do NOT think you look older but I know what you mean. I was following a very popular YouTuber who had gastric bypass and over the course of the year, I felt she looked so much older than she did before the surgery. She looked really good, but the "fluff" was gone in her face (as you mentioned) and it definitely aged her. I told my husband I think I will look older as well (I'm 53) when I lose weight because of my puffy baby cheeks. Someday I will be brave like you and post before and after photos. Looking good! (And welcome to the 50s!)

    Pounds lost

8 months out 78 lbs down 9 to go. I “stall” frequently, I try not to stress because I follow the program and it does come off. I upped my workouts and bought a new scale so I’m skipping weighing myself the next week. I just end up getting frustrated. my apologies I just saw this was in the bypass forum, I had VSG.

    No weight loss

I lost one more pound ..so in the past 2 weeks I've lost ONE pound. I cried at the doctors office, how embarrassing. My surgeon said that patients with revisions have a tendency to not lose as much as quickly as first time bariatric surgery patients. Our bodies are somewhat used to a lower calorie intake from the previous surgeries and it takes some time for our metabolism to kick back in. I hope that's the case.

    Bypass or Sleeve

Depends on your own personal situation but the bypass is the more aggressive and better for long term weight loss. There numerous pages to read but one thing I must say is SLEEVE can cause reflux or GERD where bypass will fix it and many patient's end up having to be converted from SLEEVE to bypass anyway. I'm choosing bypass because it will help me as it's more restrictive and reduces absorption of calories but there's alot of scientific information out there! So Goodluck!

    GERD before and after sleeve

@nssmia eeeeeek, hold your horses☺️ i am going to play devils advocate I never had any gerd pre-op to sleeve - so reflux never an issue for me reading the boards you will see many OP that had gerd, or never had it before - and gerd become unbearable PO sleeve there are OP on the board that have revisions (ie to gastric bypass) to get rid of/improve their gerd problem - hopefully you will hear good/bad stories concerning the gerd/reflux with the sleeve i don't have stats - but in my opinion concerning reflux/sleeve - owner beware I am so happy with my sleeve these past 7+ years - it is a great choice☺️ but talk to your doc again about sleeve vs bypass involving reflux hmmmm, hope i didn't scare you about sleeve, its wonderful, just putting "it" all on the table for you and OP☺️ good luck with your decision kathy

    GERD before and after sleeve

I had GERD before my sleeve. Had a long talk with my surgeon and we felt that sleeve was a reasonable risk even in the presence of pre-existing GERD. About a month after my surgery, I started getting heartburn. I take 20mg Nexium every day and it seems to keep the heartburn at bay, but I do have some nighttime reflux. Not anything severe, I wake up with a sore throat. My GI doc is following me and we are weighing options, preferably ones that would avoid bypass.

    Bypass or Sleeve

These links may help Bypass vs Sleeve https://www.obesitycoverage.com/gastric-bypass-vs-gastric-sleeve-surgery/ Click the top procedures tab to research https://www.obesitycoverage.com/category/weight-loss-surgeries/ My personal thoughts. I have the sleeve. I lost 120 in six months. The rate and amount of weight loss can be different than what the statistics say. I liked that my intestines are not altered. The only draw back is many of us don’t get dumping syndrome. If sugar is an issue you may want to investigate a procedure( like bypass) where your intestines are altered and sugar will cause dumping. Whatever procedure you choose it all comes down to following your plan and behavior change. Bariatrics is not the easy way out. Its work.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

Good morning. I had a gastric bypass revision on April 3. I am doing well except for being sooo tired. I move onto soft foods today. Pretty excited about that! I spent two nights in hospital because the hole in my original pouch (done in 2004) was 3”, much larger than expected. Also had a lot of scar tissue. The nausea after surgery was horrendous the first day but not too bad after. Pain has been minimal. I I hope everyone here has a surgeon as amazing as mine. And a wonderful post-op experience in the hospital. Hang in there! It gets better every day.

    Gastric Bypass - Help?!

After Gastric Bypass surgery, I lost 120 pounds (8.6 stones) within around 7 or 8 months after surgery. One of the advantages of this surgery (RNY gastric bypass) was that I completely lost my hunger. It was not difficult to lose the weight when you are not constantly hungry all the time. Eventually after about a year the hunger returns but it is not as strong as before. A picture is worth a thousand words - so here is my before and 6 month after - photo comparison. Initially the weight loss is rapid but as time goes on it slows down and then eventually stops and a person transitions into the Maintenance stage. In this stage the goal is to maintain the weight that has been lost. There is also something called the 20 pound bounce. Many individuals will gain around 20 pounds back from their bottom but it is important to not let this weight gain accelerate beyond this bounce.

    April 2019 Surgeries!

It has been one week since my gastric bypass. I had a rough start due to some leftover scar tissue from previous surgeries. Because of bleeding, I ended up in the hospital for four nights instead of the expected one. Since being released, though, things are going really well. I’m not having any difficulty drinking the required amount of liquid. I have been drinking water, Crystal Light, V8, Gatorade Zero, and my protein shakes. I have been driving for a few days with no problems. I feel pretty normal except for being pretty tired. I have had almost zero pain (from day one) from my surgical sites. I am sending good vibes to those of you waiting for your April surgery.

    Gastric Bypass - Help?!

Hi James, Yes the MGB is a new version that I think takes less time for the surgeon to do, but it seems to be getting good reviews 🙂 Yes I totally agree, the psychological element will be essential for me to work, I am almost afraid if I am going into it too soon but I think I will always make an excuse if I don't. I am just wondering how is your relationship now with food 6 years after having the bypass? Thank you for all of the advice, I will definitely be keeping that in mind! I know for the year after my body will be healing so I need to nourish it in all ways I can. 🙂

    Gastric Bypass - Help?!

Hey Froufrou, Thank you for the advice 🙂 your so right I don't think any of us would be in this position if it wasn't an addiction and it's just such a shame that we carry ours on our waistline! Like you I know I will always have this battle and that's why I referred myself for therapy, my relationship with food has never been positive! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me, it is really appreciated 🙂 I am happy you have found success with the bypass
  21. For those of you who have gerd prior to sleeve procedure, just wondering how your gerd symptoms are after the sleeve procedure. I take prevacid daily and it's well under control. I do no want to have gastric bypass which is what is recommended sometimes if you have gerd. I've read where it's not such a problem for some people. Comments are appreciated Sent from my SM-J727V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Gastric Bypass - Help?!

I had gastric bypass surgery around 6 years ago and I am very pleased with the results. It is sort of like the gold standard for bariatric surgery. They have most of the bugs worked out. Mini-gastric bypass is somewhat new so I can not really assess it. In general, many people try various kinds of diets prior to eventually getting gastric bypass surgery. Most of the time these are referred to as yo-yo diets. Because the individuals will lose some weight but then over time give up the diet and then gain the weight back and then some. So it is like a yo-yo. In your case it went to the extreme and you slid into anorexia. So the only advise here is that the psychological treatment component is very important for you for the surgery to work. (the package with the 12 phycologist sessions). Also if things go south sometimes after surgery then reactivate the physiological component. The three most important elements after gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

    Gastric Bypass - Help?!

I don't know the different between the mini bypass and the regular one... but I'd say go for the bypass over the sleeve if that's even on the table. I had the sleeve done and I was just hungry all the time. I know some people aren't, but I see a lot of people are. I'd just go for the best. I had the bypass done in February and I am not hungry. I still struggle with my brain wanting food, but that's going to be a lifelong struggle for me. I have an addiction and like all addictions, you have to work at it. It sounds like you are going into this with your eyes wide open, ready to deal with the psychological part of it, which is a great way to approach it.
  24. Hi everyone :) I was wondering if I could ask for some help please? A quick introduction to my weight history. SO from a young age I was always overweight. Primary school I was the chubby girl, in high school I was the fat girl and in university the weight piled on even more until I got to around 16 and a half stone where the weight maintained itself. Then in the year of 2016/17 I went on an extreme diet and exercise regime where I lost ALOT of weight by myself, in the beginning it was great I felt in control and very motivated but then by the end of 2017 I had lost too much weight, I was severely depressed, lacking in nutrients, I had no friends and my weight plummeted to 6 and a half stone :(. Then in February of 2018 something just snapped in me I was tired of being constantly anxious and avoiding food so I just started eating EVERYTHING I had banned and BOOM by the end of 2018 I was back up to 17 stone again!! I understand that my body needed the food but my anorexia phase went straight into binge eating and I have been struggling ever since :( all that hard work for nothing but I was so miserable I just wish I hadn't taken it so far! Now I want to have WLS (I am going to therapy) and have been in contact with a surgeon here in the UK who is lovely, I want to take my time, heal my mind and body but I am just so down with my relationship with myself and food at the moment :( Can anyone offer any advice please? The surgeon believes the mini gastric bypass would be the best route but I would need to select the package with the 12 phycologist sessions. How has everyone's experience been after surgery? I just am afraid of going back the way I was, I never want to be like that again but I am feeling horrible at the moment :( Thank you! :) Char
