Fart Pads for Smelly Gas - Would you use them?
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was recently approached about carrying Subtle Butt disposable gas neutralizers in the BariatricPal Store. Subtle Butt disposable gas neutralizers use activated carbon to eliminate bad odors and save you from the smell (or the embarrassment). These 5 saving graces (also affectionately known as fart pads or fart filters) effectively filter the odor caused by flatulence. Simply stick one to the inside of your underwear and you're good to go. I personally know many weight loss surgery patients that suffer from really bad flatulence after gastric bypass or duodenal switch weight loss surgery. We would start selling them if we were told that our members were interested in this product. Please let us know by voting in this poll! -
Operation date was April 24,2012 in sac , it's almost been 4mos sense I've gotten this . I started at 300lbs. Now am 262 lbs, which I have been foe 3 weeks now, I'm still waiting to get a fill. They said they could get me a app, for sept the 7th and that doesn't mean I'll get a fill then , they will just talk to me about it, they (Ucdavis) doesn't belive in giving fills unless that really have too, that's what they told me . And I'm really believing that they will not ever going to get a fill,, keep getting the run around, bin really wondering now why I had this thing put on me, I m hungry all the time and can eat like I always have, I'm so dis appointed , I wish to god that I gotten the gastric bypass, I'm not a happy camper at all, I'm on disability so I receive Medicare, I'm thinking that I'm going to try and find a diff doctor and praying that he will give me fills , or will take it out and give me the gastric bypass, but not to sure how Medicare feels about that? I feel like the year of jumping thur hoops and all the test to have this operation was a waste of time, I want so very much for this to work, I read all your guys good reports and wieght loss, which is wonderful, but I'm really starting to feel like giving up all hope, I just don't understand . Countingtcalories and doing it all like a good girl and I'm starving and still not losing wieght, I have 1000 cal. A day like the doc said , I have my protien drink, I walk 2 hours a day, what did I do to my self? I'm going to look for another doc and talk to him about every thing and take it from there, I'll touch back in with everyone to update on what's happening with me, and congrad. To all the wonderful ones that are trying and the one that r losing wieght , that's fantastic! I don't know how ur doing it , but congrats . I'll try to make my next post more if a possitive one, sorry I just needed to talk to someone , thanks

If you DO NOT WANT to have the surgery, then it would be a HUGE MISTAKE to proceed at this time. You do not mention any reason that indicates it is medically necessary for you to have the surgery immediately, so back off. Give yourself a grace period of 60 days. Get some help to sort this out. It sounds like you are having difficulties in your marriage as well; that should ideally be sorted outbefore you proceed and add any more stress to your life. You can always reschedule in a couple of months if you decide to go ahead. But if you go ahead with the surgery before your are emotionally prepared, there is no practical way to undo the surgery. This is a body-altering, permanent, lifelong commitment and you are likely to have serious emotional, and perhaps physical, problems coping with the surgery and the new lifestyle habits it entails if you are angry, depressed and resentful. PLEASE call your doctor on Monday and let them know you have SERIOUS reservations so you can get professional psychological counseling before you proceed. The fact that you are "sleeping, sleeping, sleeping" indicates that you are seriously depressed. You may benefit from anti-depressant medication as well as therapy. Neither of these are magic bullets that will suddenly make things okay overnight, but than can help you in fairly short order. The bypass is a great tool, but ONLY if you are willing to welcome it into your life and make all the eating and other changes that are part of the program. The surgery is important, but the "head work" and commitment are at least 80% of your long term success. If you are fighting the bypass you will only be adding more problems to the ones you are already struggling with. We all get the jitters before surgery and usually that just means we need some more support and information before we go ahead. But if your worries are more than simple anxiety, please take a step back and get some professional help before you make any decisions. Take good care of yourself! -
Dr. David Vazquez who works with Dr. Fernando Garcia any one have Surgery by him?
lslblues replied to Rachel Jacobson's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had my surgery in the states, but went with a friend to TJ and he had his surgery with Dr Garcia. Overall it was very positive experience. Dr Garcia is very soft-spoken, speaks ok english, and seems like a very competent surgeon. There is a female doctor that is on his staff who was excellent. She had a gastric bypass done a few years ago and has done very well. She speaks excellent english and is very good at explaining what you need to know. There were also 2 doctors, one of which was always there, who spoke excellent english and helped out with any questions/issues. I was also very impressed with the plan they give you regarding post-op diet, procedures, etc. The hospital is a bit older and some of their equipment is older - for example the EKG machine. Sanitation and medical protocols were ok, but definitely behind American standards. They are definitely focused on bariatric surgery. The day my friend had surgery, there were a total of 6 gastric sleeves being done - 3 by Garcia and 3 by 2 other doctors. The hospital does other types of surgery, but they said 75%+ of their patients were gastric sleeves. Hospital only has about 15 rooms, all of which are private. Very laid back. As the guest, the accommodations were nice. Fairly comfy bed in the room for you to use. Walmart - 5 minute walk. Excellent mexican food that delivers to the hospital. Starbucks, KFC, Dairy Queen, Carls Jr all within 5 minute walk. Beach 2 blocks away although the staff member did caution about being very careful if I went down there. TV with maybe a dozen english channels. Package deal with hotel makes that part very easy as well. Staff at hotel has lots of bariatric patients and has necessary accommodations. We walked down to the shopping center/Cinepolis and saw a movie. Nice walk and good distraction. Overall I thought it was a well-run operation. I'd think twice if I was a higher-risk patient. I'm not sure they'd be able to handle complications as well as other hospitals. -

Gastric bypass and hiatal hernia repair 27th april
Flab-U-Less Forever replied to Merill's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had gastric bypass on March 3 with a hiatal hernia repair. I knew I had heartburn issues for a long time but didn't realize until my pre op testing that it was due to a hiatal hernia. They had called it small but when my surgeon was in there doing my bypass she said it was quite large and took a long time to fix it. My stomach fundus got slightly damaged during the hernia fix so they removed a portion of it which is fine with me...less gherlin producing cells in my body. I have had no issues with GERD since surgery. I am so happy to NOT wake up in the middle of the night with stomach acid in my mouth!!! -
Short-Term Disability Approval/Denial
btrieger replied to alicia3138's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ask your surgeon what he thinks about you returning to work. We had a truck driver in one of my mandatory nutrition and behavior classes that had a similar question. The answer was that he shouldn't need more than a week or two off. The heavy lifting restrictions are usually for bypass patients. -
Well, I was going in on the 28th. But, due to a work conflict on my wife's part, we had to bump it a couple of weeks to October 12th. Not a big deal, but I still spent the better part of a couple of hours seeing if I could work out a plan to keep the 28th (drive myself, wait around the lobby for my wife to pick me up a few hours, etc). I did, however, get word from my insurance that I was approved! We were ready to go self pay if need be, but this is better. Last time, when my wife had her bypass, the hospital billed $125K for just it's part (a pre planned procedure with a two day stay and no complications. 800 (x 2) dollar morphine!!!), of which Anthem disallowed 80% or so. I wasn't looking forward to dealing with the hospital on my own without the insurance company to back me up. I know it is all a shell game between providers and insurers, but geez. My wife had an emergency gall bladder removal with an ER visit and a two day stay at a different hospital earlier last year was $35K total. I went to my one insurance required support group meeting last week. Interesting, that of 30+ people in the group, only myself and one other pre-op were going LAP-BAND®®®®. All the others , including all the post op, were sleeve or bypass. One other pre op explained she was fighting with insurance for the sleeve, though she had been approved for LAP-BAND®®®® or bypass. She was very against a foreign object in her body. She felt they all suffer from rejection and infection, no offense to the two of us going LAP-BAND®®®®. Different strokes. Cheers, Erick

Thanks, Cindy. Thank you so much for the kind words. ObesityHelp - Gastric Bypass, LAP-BAND® System, DS and Other Surgical and Non-Surgical Weight Loss Options. But, be careful. The format is horrible, there are no sections like on LBT. There are many forums for each type of WLS, there is a forum for each state, etc. Check it out, sometimes there is good info there.

Pre-Op Diet Leaving Me Skeptical About Success W/band
GuyMontag replied to OldMomOf3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The bypass takes a lot less work though. I still think the band or sleeve is a better option overall but for people that aren't going to put much work into weight loss bypass is a better option IMO. Bypass is a set it and forget it surgery. Hopefully they set it right the first time. The band takes more work. You have to constantly get fills, there are constant hurdles such as heartburn, being too tight, being too loose, etc., along with adjusting diet to lose weight. The band is a good tool. However, if you give me the raw material to build a deck I'll do it. Some people are never going to build a deck no matter how many tools and materials you put in front of them. Some people are just better off buying something premade from the internet and hoping it ends up working for them. I talk to people all day in chat that honestly should not have gotten the band. The pre-op diet is tough...but if you're questioning the band before you even get it and think it's going to be too hard then it probably is. -
That is weird. I believe you but really said bypass on site I saw. I wonder where she has been lately. Hope all is ok.

Sharon Osbourne has been through a lot. First the cancer and then the double mastectomy, her sons ms. She is one very strong lady and knows what she is doing. I have noticed she has been Mia from the talk and Carnie Wilson has been filling in. Can't tell if she has lost. I guess maybe she learned her lesson after being so public about her bypass. Best of luck to her.

Also a few nfl coaches and John Daley . Carnie Wilson got it over her bypass

I have gotten Medicare to reconsider accepting the Sleeve Gastrectomy. you need to view the psoting. They are soliciting public comments. http://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/details/nca-details.aspx?NCAld+=258&ver=2&NcaName=Bariatric+Surgery+for+the+treatment+of+Morbid+Obesity+(2nd+Recon)&bc=ACAAAAAAAAAA Please visit this site and post any information in favor. Thanks. Marcia name='likasulema' timestamp='1318798760' post='219248'] i have medicare as my primary coverage, but empire blue cross as my secondary. MEDICARE does NOT cover the sleeve yet because its relatively new (few years or something. ) Medicare DOES cover the lapband and gastric bypass. (but i want the sleeve) My surgery for the sleeve is 12/7 - medicare will send the "official" denial for the sleeve after hospital sends bill, empire needs to see the "official" denial first, and then empire looks at my qualifications in having the sleeve. I have all the qual.. (BMI, diabetes, high chlolesteral, and high blood pressure, and sleep apnea (aren't I lucky???!!!) The insurance companies know that Medicare doesn't cover the sleeve, but they need the official denial after the surgery. Then the other insurance company can proceed. I know this sounds weird, its the beurocracy (msp) but thats how it was explained to me. Empire does cover the sleeve - so they told me after all the paperwork is sent in I will be 99% positive I will be approved. They can't officially guarantee it for obvious reasons. But they did tell me unofficially of course that everything looks fine. so the bottom line is MEDICARE doesn't cover the sleeve, no if ands or butts, but your secondary might cover it, like my empire blue cross. hope i've helped - without confusing you too much - write back w/any more questions )

Anyone Use Dr. Nusbaum In Nj?
ATK replied to mysunflower621's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hello! I am a Dr Nusbaum's patient. I was sleeved 12/17/13. I'm a physician myself. I've spoke to several surgeons before I finalized my choice. No regrets. I'm very happy with Dr. Nusbaum and his office. Everything went very smoothly. Few days after the surgery I had a question for a Doctor, he called imediately. He also using a med application on iPhone, so you can text directly to him, bypassing answering service. All the PAs, that are working with him, are extremely knowledgeable and skillful. The office staff are polite and courteous. I would recommend Dr. Nusbaum to anyone who is looking for a surgeon in this area. -
I am post op about 2 weeks for a lap band removal/revision to rny gastric bypass. I have Anthem bc/bs. I had them for the original surgery in 2007. Really didn't have any trouble, once the communication was open from my Surgeon's office and Anthem. I don't recall any lifetime max on my plan, but maybe others do.

Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
M_Johnson replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am in the process of going from sleeve to bypass due to GERD. The reflux is so bad. I have some pre op testing to do but I am on 5 different medications more then once daily for this reflux and now it's making me throw up. Love my sleeve but I hate the reflux. I am so happy to see there are others going through it. I am more nervous about this surgery then the sleeve. I am afraid I will chicken out. Ugh. -
Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
India928 replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Suusje - you mentioned that losing weight will be slower this time around. Do you happen to know why that is? And, is it slower for all sleeve to bypass conversions? That's a bit disappointing and makes me sad! -
Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Band07 replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Weight loss is always slower for revisions (except for some of the band to sleeve patients) because your body is already used to calorie restrictions and high protein. You don't get the initial shock to your body you do with your first procedure. I'm on my 3rd, it's very slow !! 24lbs In almost 8 weeks. Of coarse how much you have to lose also makes a difference. Typically revisions have less than virgin patients but not always. -

Yeah I've resorted to slider foods too. I feel like so much of a failure for it. How far out were u before the docs decided revision was best? How much have u lost? I'm on double dose omeprezole, ranitidine, carafate and nitroglycerin. Good luck with ur insurance! -
Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
peacheeie replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
How are you doing? I was just told today after my endoscopy that my sleeve that was done jan 9th is wayyyyy larger than it should be and that's why I'm not loosing (20 lbs in 4 mos)!! New doctor said he would have to do a bypass because my sleeve is so "hacked" that it would be too risky to do a "sleeve over sleeve" surgery. I'm just beginning to soak up this news so please any insight would be so helpful!! Hope the pain gets better soon -

Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
Googler replied to snowkitten's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It went ok. I sincerely feel no effects from the bypass part of my surgery, but the meshing/fixing of the incisional hernia (from gall bladder surgery, nothing gastric) is hella-painful. I don't have to worry about going back to work, but hubs goes back tomorrow. I'm going to miss him helping me at times. I truly had no pain after the sleeve surgery. I was not expecting this to be like this. Coughing, clearing my throat, anything where my midsection tightens is rough. Good luck with heading back to work. So glad everything is going good for you!
