  1. At my three month appointment I was told I was getting too few calories (800-1000) and that I should increase it to 1200-1400 so that my body wouldn't think it was starving. I was scared to do it, but when I did the weight started dropping off. I do work out for a minimum of 5 hours per week, usually swimming, which does burn a lot of calories, so they took that into account too.

    Another banded newbie

Welcome! Sorry about the bleeding trouble. I'm sure your scars will fade to nothing-much. Mine did. I had 5 incisions twice and only about three of those are visible. Don't be in too much of a hurry for that first fill, you are still healing. It's important to let yourself heal completely to avoid trouble down the road so follow your doc's instructions about exercise and foods to the letter. (please) I'd bet you will bypass your goal weight and keep going. I'm 5'7" and 150 and you are just a tiny thing. (soon to really be tiny) I'm four years out from my surgery and the best advise I can give is to be patient with the process and with yourself. You are attempting a major lifestyle change and that is SO difficult. Cut yourself a break when you falter. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on the "bandwagon" without recriminations. It takes a long time to lose a pound of fat. That's a deficit of 3500 calories. Unless you workout like a mad fool, losing 1-2 lbs a week is just fine. The band really helps with the patience. It keeps you from the "oh what the heck" moments that wreck a weeks efforts. Good luck on your journey,

    Finally, Lifetime Diet Phase!

6 weeks after surgery I started my life diet phase. I am a huge sweet tooth but too much sugar and dumping time. I hate sugar free stuff, I would rather have dumping then what those protein sugars do to me, the stuff generally in sugar free candy and chocolate. So the indulgence for me now is died mango, I mean proper dried mango not candied mango which is gross. The gross stuff says dried mango but is the consistency of jub lollies.
  4. I've gotten thru almost all my hurdles so far, then I got my TNE today (never again, for the record) my surgeon found polyps in my stomach. SO I go for full endoscopy (& biopsy) next week. Has anyone had this experience before?? now what??

    Why did you choose bypass?

I was experiencing organ damage due to my Type 2 Diabetes. Medication and insulin wasn't controlling my levels. My PCP suggested the bariatric procedure and urged me to speak to a surgeon for which procedure would be best for me. The bypass blocks the portion of the stomach that causes the organ damage. I am 7 months post op. Down 85 lbs. I came home from the hospital off all diabetes pills. Within the week I was off insulin. After a couple months I was off high blood pressure meds. I only take thyroid replacement due to my thyroid being removed years ago. My blood tests show no further organ damage and my liver levels have improved. Sleeve or band wouldn't have been the solution for me. Best of luck! You won't be disappointed with the bypass results.

    November 30th

Hi HD, my date is November 30th too. I guess this is my official de-lurking post I've been working through this process since April of 2010 -- medical, dietician, psych & more medical visits & evals, a 12-week healthy eating class, and finally approved by insurance. Can't believe it's finally a go. I was afraid of the surgery ending up right around the holidays and lo and behold that's exactly what happened... but I guess that's how it's meant to be. I'm feeling all the same feelings that you are! UX

    Clarity on "Stats"

Tomorrow is one day before sleeve.

You can do it! Prep your mind for a bit of pain, a lot of hormonal imbalance, and some frustration. You'll get through it, but you may feel a bit ... not prepared for your emotional and physical state for a few weeks post op. It is worth it.

    3Days!

I'm not sure what I weigh now...Weighed in at my surgeon's office at 212 on Halloween, and won't weigh in again til my next visit later this month. Was so worried about stalls, I figured I'd just save myself the stress, do what I need to do, then be pleasantly surprised (I hope) at my next visit.

    Bowel Habits

Are you taking prescribed or over the counter acid reducing meds? If you aren't you should be for the first two to three months after surgery. This goes for bypass and sleeve patients. I'm not sure if this applies to lapband patients. Talk to your surgeon right away about this and let them know how you are feeling. Take care and much success to you on your journey to better health.
  12. Hi Carla K. I have had quite a bit of trouble with this. Not just where my port is. I had my gallbladder out Jan 8th. I had lapband surgery Feb 8th. It seemed I had trouble with all my incisions. I tried to wear a bra 3 weeks after gallbladder surgery. This really irritated two of my puncture wounds. Then I tried using Neosporin on them and bandaids. Wrong. They wouldn't heal because they stayed moist. My doc was not pleased. He said they had to breath to dry up. However, when I woke from being banded I had thick layers of gauze over one wound. I guess he didn't think it neede to breath all the time. Anyway, after having to wash the blood out of my gowns constantly for the last two months this is what I found helpful. When showering I wash my tummy with Soft Soap using my hand. For me Neosporin has been helpful. I just put a thin layer over my wounds. If I need to have them covered because of needing to wear clothes and such silly things, I use a thick layer of gauze taped on with the tape that is used for that. I still have oozing 2 months out but not so much from infections. It has been an interesting road. Good luck with this. I appreciate it that this can be very frustrating.
  13. Day three was the worst for me. I ended up crying for an hour, then cheated later by eating some celery sticks (not recommending cheating, just saying that's what I did). Day 4 sucked too because I had to go to a baby shower. I chewed a lot of SF gum that day! After that it was easier. It did still suck, but the first days were the WORST!
  14. So i started my liquid diet today! Seems so much harder! IDK why but i feel im craving everything.. Does it get easier after a couple days or a week? Excited for surgery on the 19th of September! seems like ive been waiting forever for this

    Pre-op diet

I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks pre op.. optifast 4 small juice boxes of it a day and a optifast bar. I was really worried about it because I was afraid I would be hungry and fail.. But I wasn't hungry on it.. it was fine. I did get a little hungry the second week and called the nutritionist and she allowed salad with balsamic vinegar and 3oz of tuna a day that really helped. It was not as bad as I had worried. I just kept thinking I wanted this surgery to save my life! I could do two weeks of dieting so I wouldn't have to diet for the rest of my life! It is amazing how great I feel and you will look back and realize how easy it was. You can do it. Just remember you can do anything to be there for your kids. You will be adding years to your life by losing weight and this was my inspiration. Good luck and God bless!

    Gas Pain Relief

The gas pain is from gas trapped around your diaphragm that sends pain signals. From what I understand, GasX doesn't help that kind of gas. The best thing to do is walk around. It can take up to a week for the gas to dissipate.

    Hanging in there!

It IS hard! But, do hang in there! You're doing a good thing for yourself. One thing I found that helps is taking a walk when the family eats. Get out and away from the smell and the sight of food. Use the time to do something else good for you..exercise. Or, if it's too late in the evening for that, go take a shower and brush your teeth. Anything to avoid the temptation! You have a rough few weeks ahead of you. It will be easier if you go ahead and find ways to handle the temptations. Good luck to you!

    Mexico sleevers and passports

I chose to get the passport card vs the book. The card gets you across boarders by land OR sea. A book is definitely needed when flying into other countries. The card was cheaper and got to my home pretty fast... less than 3 weeks.

    Pre-op diet

    Losing Hair

great article! Thanks for sharing! I've been really worried about the hair loss issue after surgery (scheduled 4/20/13) because my hair has already begun thinning, especially in the front-top. I started taking Biotin, and applying Mioxinol solution (the main ingredient found in Rogain). I'm also taking a supplement called NuHair. I am trying to get my hair as healthy as possible BEFORE surgery....who knows if it will do one darn thing, but I wanted to at least give it a shot. I only started a couple of weeks ago and the Mioxinol says it will take 4 months to work! I'll have to report back later if I had any success.
  21. I've posted on this topic because I've had a horrible time with what I call "electric chair eating." I went ahead and started my pre-op diet today even though I am 2.5 weeks before surgery because I couldn't quit eating - was literally sitting around and thinking of all the things I was going to miss. I literally made myself sick. I do NOT recommend it. I do, however, understand it. For me, once i get the sugar out of my system, the cravings become manageable. I hope that will be your experience on liquids as well. Best of luck on your journey!

    Protein Pills

I'm 7 weeks out and was worried about the same thing. Nut, surgeon, and surgeons nurse all said the same thing. The most important thing the first few weeks is to get fluids in. At this stage i'm still struggling to get 80g of Protein per day. But now i'm going to go look up this protein shot in the previous post.

    Protein powder

I agree with not getting tubs of Protein. My taste buds did not change after surgery but during the liquid phase I used ready to drink Protein shakes from Atkins, Carnation and Premier Protein. I was instructed to drink 4 ounces of Protein shake every two hours and the RTD were very convenient. At eight weeks out I start most days with a homemade shake using unjury Protein, Chike or Syntrax Nectars. It is pretty rare for me to drink RTD shakes now.

    Protein Shake Blues :(

i hated the protein drink search:( the only one i can stomach is the premier protein chocolate flavor. these are premade and each container is 30 g of protein and it's pretty tasty- they are 11 ounces. I drink one every day between breakfast and lunch- i am 8 weeks out and i can get the rest of my required 75 grams of protein in with my meals and that makes me very happy. good luck!
