COVID and Sleeve
vikingbeast replied to SeattleLady's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a presumptive positive last month (couldn't get a test for love or money around here). I was sleeved in September. I ended up retaining water and felt bloated. I gained three pounds (and wigged out) but as soon as I got over it, that weight came right back off. I didn't lose my appetite, though, I just was too tired to eat. -
I'm not sure why you can't go out to eat. I go out to eat, and I'm not even five months out from surgery. I just order what I want and ask the server to bring a to-go box at the same time as the plate. I portion out what I think I'm going to eat and put the rest in the box. Or I just order an appetizer if there's one that looks good to me. I definitely am eating more than 4 oz. of food at a time, and I'm still losing 2-3 lbs. a week. I agree with others that it's probably time for you to look for someone to talk to about your pining for the old days. Because what's done is done. "Stomach stretching" takes years if it happens at all—and there are plenty of WLS veterans on this very board who, three or five or even ten years later, have reduced appetite.

I stayed at home for three weeks but could have gone back to work after two. I felt fine and wouldn't have needed any accommodations. -

Yeah it is! It's like different times too. Some people do liquids for a week only I hear. I'm 12 days on two shakes one protein meal a day along with jello, popsicles and broth and then 2 days all liquid before surgery. Tofu is good! But I've also been eating it since I was very young as it's a staple in my family. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

COVID and Sleeve
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to SeattleLady's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was sleeved 9/21/21 and ended up getting COVID a couple of weeks ago. I was fully vaccinated and boosted, and had already lost nearly 70lbs from my highest weight, which I absolutely credit with my mild case and speedy recovery. While sick I had almost no appetite and lived off of protein shakes and soup. I tried to get my fluids in but did not track food or protein or steps or anything else. I rested and medicated. Since then I've bounced back just about 95%. I still have a small cough, but that could also be attributed to cold weather and asthma. It might be helpful to check in with your surgeon/dietician for some guidance if you are struggling with food tolerance/intake. -
Surgeon's advice after vomiting
Guest replied to lizonaplane's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I appreciate you taking the time to answer. The two weeks of Optifast pre-surgery are an eating disorder waiting to happen. I mean, fluids after, sure, but before? That's just medically mandated anorexia. What next? Learn to make yourself vomit for good measure? And there are unfortunately some poor souls here who go on diets for months. We have the surgery because our bodies fight that process, it's nothing but a way to deny necessary medical treatment to people needing it. Because this disease happens be seen as a moral failure. Imagine they asked people with a fracture in their foot to run on it for a couple months to qualify for surgery. I mean, you can, it will hurt, "but it's good for you to practice what you'll do after surgery when in rehab". And exercise is good right? -

You're not likely to need any special accommodations. You'll recover so much more by next week. -

I'm very happy to hear that all you guys are doing ok post surgery. I'm getting closer to the 17th and getting anxious. I've been on a mixed diet for the past week and hasn't been too much fun so far. I replace 2 meals for a protein shake and 3-4 oz of lean meat and lettuce. It's not that bad but not easy. But it's just for a little longer! I'll keep you all in my prayers! -

Hey all! New member here, and my RNY is scheduled for Feb 16th (in MN). 9 more days! Almost done with the first week of my 2 week pre-op diet, going strong. 💪 My 5 year old and husband woke up this morning with stuffy noses and coughing, so I'm taking zinc, vitamin C, and wearing a mask at home around them as I do NOT want to catch their cold a week before surgery! This is my 2nd date, as my original date of Nov 17 was canceled because the whole family got Covid the week before and then the hospital ended up cancelling surgeries anyway because of capacity. I am not trying to get canceled and wait another hecking 3 months to be rescheduled again, it would break my heart. 💔 -
Work Accommodations
Tony B - NJ replied to trouvaillex's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will see a drastic improvement in a week from how you feel right now. I don't think you really will need any accommodations. If anything, you will need to be able to get up and walk around atleast once an hour to keep things moving and aid in healing. I seriously doubt after 2 weeks you will have much pain or weakness. -
Hi all :) I’m new here! I just underwent gastric sleeve surgery exactly a week ago today! While still in quite a bit of pain, I will be returning to work next week. I sit in an office practically all day, and was wondering if any of you may have sought out accommodations with your place of employment, and what those accommodations may have been? More so, I’m curious about more physical accommodations you may have sought out as I have some fear around comfortability in an office setting in this condition. Thanks so much!!

Determining Goal Weight
Guest replied to suzannethemom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think some of the tension here (and on the forum in general) is between those who've accepted obesity as a complex chronic disorder comprising mental, hormonal, habitual, gastro-intestinal topographical components - and then the more common view; namely, obesity is a moral failure with a Good and a Bad side to it. Advice for the newcomers, and I mean this in the kindest way possible (but keep in mind I'm not American, so my direct manner may be abrasive): There's almost never a good reason to tell others what to do, or judge if they're right or wrong. Being pre-op and telling others what BMI they should have will make you feel embarrassed once you get to a year after surgery. Believe me. This is a journey, and man there's a lot to learn along the way. Why not listen more, especially if you're taking the first steps on a road others have traveled already with success? I'll be happy to tell the stories of some of the people in my 'batch' from late 2020, who humblebragged for weeks about how few calories they ate, how much control they were able to exert over themselves etc, who dished out condescending advice (kinda like mine here, but I earned my wings) based off of the honeymoon weeks post surgery. Well, they're not here anymore. Because it got hard. They had to re-adjust their ideas of 'Good' and 'Bad'. The drama they created stopped being reacted upon. We're all here to deal with a debilitating chronic disease. Be excellent to each other, listen, but also stand up for one another when someone is using this space to project their inner chaos onto us. -
Anyone have panic attacks crying after sleeve?
ms.sss replied to JennyF's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think a portion of it has a lot to do with an individual’s recovery experience. When I has WLS is was totally fine, mentally. My recovery was uneventful and short (I was just mildly sore and got tired easily for a couple weeks). I had food aversion, but it didn’t bother me. I felt better than great. But when I had plastics a year later, my recovery was not as ideal (a lot of it was my own doing, but I digress), and I went through a good couple weeks of tears and feeling really bummed. So yeah, things may feel sucky right now, but it won’t always. I’m glad you have a therapist though…that will def help. Good Luck! ❤️ -
Determining Goal Weight
Guest replied to suzannethemom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
By approximation in theory but in practice I don't need to. There is no weight I could be, where eating 1000 Calories per day wouldn't cause weight loss. The other problem with weighing oneself is seen on this forum which is replete with hand wringing regarding the "three week stall" and many other issues which aren't issues at all with regard to fat loss. They are scale related aberrations. -
November Surgery Buddies!!!

Welcome to the club.. :), I am going on my 3rd stall.. I go through 2 weeks stalled, and the next week the weight comes off.. rinse and repeat. Everybody says that stalls are normal, and you just need to stick to the program, focus on water and protein. I am going to be changing up my diet to something more similar to what I was doing when I was losing weight steadily. And will be bumping up my daily exercise. -
Gas Pain post op
Pete-TheTimeIsNow replied to sgirlhoney89's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I read somewhere that post-op gas pain lasts ~2.5 days on average. So you are almost there. Other than walking and gas-x. For the first 2 days, I tried to wait and burp after each sip of water. And if the pain got worse, I drank and walked some more. As @Arabesque said, most of us are on just liquids initially. I was on liquids for 2 weeks before moving on to purees 3 weeks post-op. -
Anyone have panic attacks crying after sleeve?
summerseeker replied to JennyF's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes I did, massive buyers remorse. I chose this myself and what if it ruins the rest of my life ..... I am feeling better now that I am progressing onto real food and can look after myself. I was so wobbly that my husband had to take care of everything for 8 weeks. I see really good weight loss and that is so uplifting -

PNW Recommendations?
kristieshannon replied to blackcatsandbaddecisions's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I lived in Seattle when I had my MMO + arm lift, now live in Seattle. Apparently we’re in one of the most expensive areas of the country for plastic surgery. I ended up going to Dr. Alex Earle in Miami. What would have cost me nearly $40,000 here cost me $16.100 in Miami. Even with travel costs I came out way ahead. I spent a week there post op, and then had a couple zoom follow up visits after that. -
Pre op stuff and what did you feel like when you woke up from your bypass surgery?
Arabesque replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You will have noticed people have a lot of different experiences. Some stay in hospital a day some two or 3 days. Some need opioid pain meds for 3 or 4 days but others don’t after 2 days. Some only experience more general discomfort. Some have a lot of gas pain but others very little. Some are constipated for days. Others have diarrhoea. Some move about pretty easily while others struggle getting up & down with their pulled muscles & internal sutures. Some have an energy drop & are fatigued for a couple of weeks. Others are fine & are back at work after a week. A lot of it depends on you & how you recover & respond to the surgery, anaesthetic, etc., whether your surgery was straight forward or if they have to do other things like a hernia repair. Also surgeons do things differently. Have a chat with your surgeon & ask them about what their patients generally experience & what you can expect. If you follow your plan, eat the foods you’re allowed & meet your goals (protein, fluids, carbs, etc.) you’ll be fine. You won’t throw yourself out of ketosis eating lettuce but I get the uncertainty & wanting to ensure you don’t make a mistake. Don’t be afraid to ask your dietician for a more defined diet if you will feel more comfortable about your food choices, portion sizes etc. And if you struggle to eat or can’t tolerate certain foods to begin ask them for alternatives. All the best. -
Gas Pain post op
Arabesque replied to sgirlhoney89's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Walk. Even laps around or inside your home. Gotta get that gas moving. Gas X can help too. I had no gas after my sleeve surgery but after my gall removal, oh, boy! Took a good 5 days for the discomfort, distended tummy & shoulder pain to reduce. You’re on purées already? Most are on liquids for two weeks after surgery & don’t get to purées until week 3. But every plan is different. 🤷🏻♀️
