Anyone else have shoulder pain?
Elizabethdb replied to susieca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had severe shoulder pain until about 6 weeks out. I talked to my doctor a couple times about it. First he suggested going to the chiropractor maybe something was out. That did ease the severity of it but then I would have it REALLY bad after I ate or drank something. He then told me I was eating too much, so when I cut my portions down even more, that is when the pain finally went away.. Even now, I am 7 1/2 weeks out there will be times, not often, that I eat too much and the pain will come back. Anyway, just a little food for thought there. -
Nauseous 5 weeks post op help!
Ready2slimdown posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 1/2 weeks post bypass I progressed smoothly through my stages however for the past 2 days everything is making me nauseous including my protein shake. After drinking my protein shake I got the foamies and slimy stuff. I am trying to keep hydrated. I am only able to eat 3 or 4 baby spoons of food before the nausea kicks in. Has anyone else had this happen and if so how did you overcome it? Thanks! -

Nauseous 5 weeks post op help!
catwoman7 replied to Ready2slimdown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
call your surgeon. Could be a stricture. They happen to about 5% of bypass patients and almost always appear between 1-3 months post-surgery, so you're in the window. If that's what it is, they'll do an EGD and stretch it out. I had two of them (one at four weeks out and the second at eight weeks out). The EGD is painless (you'll be knocked out) and you'll feel better immediately. also - if you're able to keep fluids down, it should be fine if you can't get in to see someone for a couple of days, but if it gets to the point where you can't even keep fluids down, then go to the hospital. You can live without food for a few days, but not water/fluids. -
Betterthanbefore- That is true. Also, I wonder if they are the three day, over one eye, or on one side type of migraine or headache. Wishing & praying you haveno more migraines.

tell me what you think? I am an RN, who tends to not want to make a mountain out of a molehill!! It has been 4 weeks since surgery. The larger of the incision lines had scabs on it then came off last week (on their own). On Friday the distal end of the large incision line felt tender to touch or if anything leaned on it. That evening I noted the distal end looks red and there is a pea size yellow area, like a blister in appearance. The area is drainaing a pea size amount of yellow with every bandage change, so about every 8 hours I change it. I guesstimate the area of redness around it is approx 3/4 inch in length. Today I outlined it to be sure it isnt getting bigger. There does not appear to be any tenderness other than the redenned area. I have no other signs of infection. I have been putting bacitracin on it. I have my first fill on Thursday so am inclined to wait until then to see how this area does. It really seems like it is superficial, and just involving the incision line. My only concers is this incision line is closest to my port. So tell me, am I being a silly nurse to wait until Thursday???

Abdominoplasty And Hernia Surgery Aug 16Th

I agree with Karen....better to take time to recover ... Otherwise it takes a long time to get back to normal. I think I just managed to stand up straight at week 3. What does your doctor say? My doctor gave me very accurate advice as to when it was ok to do certain things. TT is a very intense operation compared to the others i had. Best of luck. Josie -
Still on stall... lost 3 lbs in 2 weeks. Program support team says "no snacking" it kills the program but Dr. says ok to have Protein shake or cheese stick, etc. twice a day to help get in protein since it's hard to down required cals, grams, etc with such small meals... Advice?

Summer Is Just Around The Corner
NJsharon replied to Suzannesh's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I have seen plenty of people who have had recovery in a hospital for 2 days, then a hotel for 2 days. Not sure why that is a problem? The hotels are typically near the hospital & have heard doctors or coordinators come to check on you too. It is also NOT true that they are "cutting corners some place" if they are a bit cheaper than Dr Aceves! Didn't you just post in the last week putting all other MX doctors down too? -
Reality Check! Someone Kick Me In The Head!
danyelleb replied to mullet head's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mmmm, that sounds tasty. I'm not a regular drinker though. I average about three drinking "events" a year. My hubby and I take turns being the DD. He's more of a drinker than I am. Anywho, I am going to have to at least try this one when I am brave enough to drink (it's way too early for me to even think about doing this). Thanks for the ingredients! -
8 days post op, hungry, no weight off
CMPW replied to cantweight2go's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
though my experience was different, I lost 21 lbs within 1o days after surgery, but the nurse from my insurance company called to check up on me and said DO NOT WEIGH yourself. She said it can be discouraging because the scale may not move...she said this is due to swelling. Your abdomin swells, you have extra gas from the surgery, and you retain a lot of water. I was very surprised to see that I had lost 21 lbs. It has been about 2 weeks since that appointment and now I have only lost an additional 4 lbs -
Hey frenchy30097. My surgeon's education class listed very specifically what types of foods we were allowed to have. I am walking 30-45 minutes 5-6 nights a week. I try very hard to limit my portion sizes. I use a bread or salad plate for meals. I have not had a fill yet. I went in on Wednesday and since I had lost 35.5 lbs, I was able to choose whether or not to have one. I decided no. I eat very small amounts of carbs, mostly chicken, fish, pork tenderloin. I also try very hard to have no snacks. Sugar free popsicles and sugar free pudding are the only sweets I've had, except for a few tiny, tiny bites of coffee cake. Good luck on your journey. Each of us is different. Keep in touch. Peggy

Pain on my lower right side
PuppyBandit replied to criveraarroyo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If the pain is about 2 inches to the right of navel then I am having it too. I am 9 days post op. I am hopefully going to see my surgeon again this week to discuss it. I was told it is port suture(s) that holds it down, but why would it be 3 inches below the port? The one who told me had very foreign accent and seemed in a hurry to see next patient and I didn't get the full discussion I wanted. So I am going this week to discuss it again with my surgeon, not his subordinate. It hurts me when I get up and down and is extreme, like a 9 out of 1-10 on pain scale. It's fast then goes away. Like being stabbed. It's really messing with my plans to walk, so now I'm not smoking, not eating ,can barely drink and not have pain messing with my mobility. Geez. Oh yea, no caffeine or cokes lol. I'm still swollen and bloated from surgery and only lost 3 pounds since surgery lol. I know it will get better but I could cry -

Hi there, I was banded October 16th and yesterday I started feeling some discomfort in the port area, like the stiches were being stretched or something. I was just wondering if I could of hurt or stretched myself by getting on the treadmill. I have been walking and even tried jogging for about 30 minutes a night. Anyone else experience anything like this?:w00t: Also - Other October Bandsters........how are you doing in your progress? I quickly lost 11 pounds:thumbup: and now since being on "mushies" I have gained a little back, :sad_smile:Is this pretty normal? Thanks! Jeni -

I have had a hard time ever since I got my fill a few weeks ago. It was tiny, but I had restriction originally. I just thought I needed more restriction b/c I was not sure I should have been able to eat as much as I was. Now though, I have a hard time with anything that is not blended or liquid. I am back on protein shakes, and watching my nutrition, so my question is -- is it bad to be over filled? Can it lead to erosion quicker, or esophagus problems? I just don't want to abuse the band or my digestive system anymore! Shoud I get unfilled?

Increase in Left side pain at three weeks post-op
Gingerisgreat posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am curious if anyone has experienced any symptoms similar to my own. I had been progressing very well, I saw my surgeon at two weeks post and he was pleased with my profess. I was walking and had little pain unless if I tried to sleep on my left side. He progressed me to puree stage foods and a few days later (I started with eggs and Soup first), I attempted some moist, pureed chicken. The chicken did NOT settle well with me at all and I was sick for two days. Since being sick, the prior "dull ache" that I had in my left side flared up and now I can barely control it. It hurts to cough, sneeze, reach, turn, and I can not let anyone hug me. Has anyone else had an increase in pain and a setback in how they feel after a week or so of feeling great?!?! I am getting discouraged. I want to be able to have fun with my children this holiday. -
I'm about 3 weeks post-surgery and every time I see someone eating something I won't be able to have for a few months, it makes me crave it...and it's not the items you'd think. Every time I see someone eating a salad on TV I keep thinking how good and fresh it looks meanwhile I'm over here with my 1/2 cup of plain Chobani like....

I had gastric sleeve surgery on December 20, 2011. I had no idea how drastically my tastes and feelings would change. I thought I paid total attention in the seminars and I was well informed about all of the issues. Now I know I was kind of blinded by the light! My surgeon and the center I went through were excellent about informing me. I guess I was missing little pieces of information and maybe I still wouldn't catch them or necessarily believe them if I started this all over again. I think the first thing I didn't take seriously enough was that my tastes would change. The first week - every single thing tasted awful except milk. Unfortunately after surgery I developed lactose intolerance. The lactaid made me puke so no milk for me. That problem was short lived and I can have milk again! I didn't care for milk before the surgery now I crave milk! I am (was) a sweet tea addict. I admit I wanted it so bad I cheated and took a few drinks. It didn't taste good anymore. I kind of feel like I'm in mourning for sweet tea. I know it is good for me that I didn't like the taste anymore but it has been a staple for me since I was a kid. I was so excited when I could have cottage cheese - I used to love it - Don't anymore. I ate the first scrambled egg with a tiny amount of melted cheese last night. It tasted so good! I threw it all up later but it still tasted great when I was eating it so as soon as I learn how to eat slow enough and chew enough time I know there is one thing that tastes good. I know I am still in a learning phase with this and things will get better but right now I feel more preoccupied with food than I ever have in my life.

So I will be 3 months out on Friday, and have been wondering something. I've been losing at a pace I'm pretty happy with and don't feel deprived at all. I have three meals a day, with one snack during the longer span between lunch and dinner. My calories have been landing between 550-650 per day on average- carbs 40 or below (35 most days, including vitamins) and Protein at 60 or above. My question is this: I've started working out pretty regularly, and the loss has slowed down a bit. I know that's normal, but I always see people saying that if you work out, you have to get in more like 800-900 calories to keep losing. I don't get how that's possible!!!! LOL. Don't get me wrong, it's a great problem to have, but I feel VERY satisfied with what I eat, and can't imagine eating more. So how am I supposed to get in the extra calories to keep the loss going? I can already feel that my stomach has relaxed and I can eat more than I did at the beginning (6-8 weeks post op I didn't exercise and probably only ate about 400 cals per day). But I don't feel like I want to eat much more than I do now.. Here is a sample day of my diet, for reference: Breakfast 3 oz. plain Greek yogurt 8 blueberries 6 almonds Lunch 2 oz. homemade turkey meatloaf 1 oz. mozzarella cheese 1/4 cup sauteed veggies Snacks 1 stick of string cheese 1 tall soy cafe au lait Dinner 2 Trader Joe's turkey meatballs 1/4 cup bolognese sauce 1/8 cup shredded cheese If I'm still hungry, maybe 1 tbsp natural Peanut Butter before bed All of that only totals up to about 700 calories, which is at the higher end range for me. I'm really satisfied eating meals like these and not hungry in between. So if anyone can advise on where you put the extra calories to help when you're working out, or advise on whether that's really necessary, that would be appreciated!

When did your calories increase?
kemo46 replied to Golden's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I exercise at least 4 times a week. I still only take in about 600 to 700 calories a day, I am just not that hungry. I want to take advantage of that first 6 months of the weight loss. When I exercise, I do cardio and light weights, that is all. The stairstepper/ski machine gives me a tough workout and I gradually increase my time on it. I also use the treadmill on max incline, this I was told really helps with the stomach area. I think the calories are important but watching the carbs and eating the right foods are more important. Sorry for the roundabout answer to your question, My calories have not increased much from once I was able to eat solid foods, I am still between 600 and 700 calories a day, about 30-40 carbs a day and try to still get in at least 80 grams of protein a day.
