    Sleeve to bypass hopefully

I'm sorry you're dealing with GERD already! Been there, done that. It's a MISERABLE way to live. And I lived that way for several years. It gets to a point that the best prescription GERD meds can't touch it. Google foods to avoid when you have GERD, there's several: fatty foods, dairy, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus, alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, mint, etc. You may try sleeping propped up or in a recliner, that's what I had to do. I'd say reach out to your surgeon and get prescription reflux meds and see what the surgeon says about how to treat it going forth. Are you okay with revising to bypass? GERD is common after lap band and sleeve since your tummy is operating under a high pressure system. And I know tons of sleeve/band patients have told their stories on here, just as I have. I told my story hoping to help prevent another person from choosing a high pressure weight loss procedure and make a better choice. The lap band permanently altered my esophagus, and I have dysmotility and nerve damage. It caused me to develop GERD along with bile reflux. If I stayed that course I was destined for Barrett's esophagus and possibly esophageal cancer. I hope this reaches at least one person considering the sleeve. I know GERD doesn't happen to everyone who gets a sleeve, but if GERD and revision and another 2 week pre-op diet doesn't sound like something you'd be keen to experience, please reconsider getting a sleeve. It's not the only weight loss surgery option out there. @SleeveDiva2022 I wish you the best and hope you feel better soon!

    Help! VSG or Bypass

How is everything going now? I am 3 1/2 months out from my sleeve and for the first time in my life, I started having HORRIBLE gerd symptoms 2 days ago. I'm uncomfortable during the day, but at night is when I'm in agony. I'm on 40mg of Omeprazole for 6 months because of the surgery, so I'm shocked this is happening. I made a post titled "Is this GERD?" because I literally have never felt anything like this before and it's freaking me out. I'm scared that if GERD is starting 3 1/2 months out from surgery, I'm going to have to be miserable for years before I can be approved for a revision. And I thought bypass was kind of the gold standard for eliminating GERD, and now I'm nervous having read a few threads on here about people getting the bypass and developing GERD after, or getting it because of GERD and it not going away.

    Steroids Before Bypass Surgery

Once upon a time, I was on long term, moderate to high dose, daily steroid therapy. I even had to have an open surgery while taking moderate doses of steroids. I will spare everyone the long, drawn out details, lol. But if you plan on being down to 5 mg, you shouldn't have these issues. I haven't been on steroids for years, but prior to deciding on revision to bypass, I was on Celebrex for years. When I decided to move forward with revision, I stopped Celebrex and gave myself several months to make sure I could function without them, because I knew I would have to stop them since they're a very strong NSAID. And I agree with the others, this is something you need to have a very, very detailed discussion with your surgeon about, and do it as soon as possible and don't wait until the day of surgery. But my question to you is, after your bypass surgery, will you continue steroid therapy or is your doctor planning to wean you off of them for good? They're know to cause ulcers post gastric bypass, along with inhibiting weight loss, and my surgeon said absolutely no oral NSAIDs after surgery, so if I ever do need them it will have to be very infrequently and by injection only. Best wishes!
  15. I had the sleeve because I have bipolar disorder and was concerned about the absorption of medication with the bypass. The dr said he recommended the sleeve because of my lower BMI but would do bypass if I wanted it. The NP said she would go with sleeve because it’s the safer choice in terms of my medications. I did not lose as much weight as I had hoped to. In all fairness the NP did warn me that sometimes with Bipolar disorder that people do not lose quite as much as those without it but I only got down to 25.7 BMI which is still technically overweight and then I gained the bounce back weight. I sometimes wonder if I had just chosen the bypass if I would have lost more and had a little easier time keeping it off. The only thing is, who is to say that I wouldn’t be one of the people who lost less with bypass as well. What if it’s not the surgery choice at all. Don’t get me wrong. I am still happy to have lost what I did lose and if I can maintain this I will be happy enough. I just don’t have much wiggle room and do wonder if I had chosen bypass if it would be different. I think it’s only human to wonder if the grass would’ve been greener on the other side. You definitely do still have time to change your mind though. They told me I was in no rush to decide all along. If I had more time to research one question I would have asked is if their patients that revised sleeve to bypass lost more after the bypass (got to a lesser weight than they had with the sleeve). I know that doesn’t 100% mean people who get bypass first will lose more than they would have with sleeve but it seems like it would be the case. They are both excellent and relatively safe options so I don’t think there is a wrong choice really. My only real advice would be to take your time until you feel confident in your choice and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions until you are.

    August surgery buddies!

Before my VSG, I only lost 2 lbs during my 2 week pre-op diet! Talk about discouraging! They had me only eating/drinking protein shakes and greek yogurt. I never eat yogurt because it’s too high in calories and carbs. I think that is what kept me from losing any weight. However, my surgery went very well and I recovered quickly so there’s that… This time around (I’m getting ready for a revision from VSG to RNY) I’m drinking protein shakes but not eating much greek yogurt. I’m sipping on chicken bone broth a lot instead. I started my pre-op diet 4 days ago and I’ve lost 3 lbs. so far. Hang in there! It’s all going to work out great! Just stick to your pre-op diet and everything will be fine. You’ll start dropping weight after your surgery. I lost almost 80 lbs in about 3 months after my VSG.

3 years post VSG to RNY

I had a revision in March From sleeve to rny due to GERD. I dont suffer from heartburn anymore which is great however I feel a lot less restriction with food and I find i am able to eat more than I was before and have actually gained 15lbs since my lowest weight after my sleeve in 2018. I’m feeling scared that I will continue to gain and feel like I shouldn’t have gotten the revision :(. Anyone else go through this?
  18. I don't believe it would be a waste of money if you go to a good surgeon. I wish I did my revision sooner or skip the sleeve all together because I got gerd from it. The revision was the best thing I have ever done and worth every penny. The sleeve was good at restriction but the rny, at least to me, is another animal altogether. I don't dump at all (once early on) but I get full so fast. Although I had my revision for uncontrolled gerd purposes, I lost over 90 lbs. in less than a year. I could never get below 160 lbs with the sleeve (which was fine at the time) but here I sit at 114 lbs. No gerd, no side effects, I feel great physically. I have been transitioning to get to maintenance the last 3 months.

This is my hold up at the moment for my revision. The first time around I seen one in office and now they don’t have him and told me to go and find one. I seen someone here also had a therapist, so I’m going to contact my doctor tomorrow to see if they would be okay with her helping out. Good luck everyone! We will get through this just fine!

    Bariatric friendly pain relievers

Not sure if you can use these with your job or not, but I use CBD oil and topical CBD products, lidocaine cream and tylenol. I really haven't had to use anything like this since my revision, except last week, I got blinded by the sun and missed a step and banged my knee on the concrete walkway, and I was three weeks post op revision at that point and started back at the gym the day before so I was a bit sore, then the fall on top of all of that... the CBD oil took the edge off of the pain. It's supposed to be really good for muscle recovery anyway. Maybe try one of those donut pillows that you sit on? I hope you feel better soon!

    August surgery buddies!

Lordy, yes! I remember eating the potted deviled ham when I was a kid. 😂 After my VSG, during my puréed stage, I made a lot of tuna salad (just tuna and mayo with a little dill pickle juice) in my food processor. I’d whip that stuff up and put it in little 2 oz cups and keep them in my fridge. I really liked the Starkist Hickory Smoke tuna in the pouch and I would use that most of the time. I liked having some guacamole with a little salt, too. I watched a lot of YouTube videos by this lady who was very creative with the puréed stage food. If you want to get some ideas, watch TimeToShrink videos. I plan to use a lot of my old “recipes” after my revision to RNY.

    August surgery buddies!

What are you revising from? You may be right about the revision. I know my doctor told me that he would not do my lap-band removal and revision to sleeve in one operation because its more traumatic to the body. And had a greater percentage of some kind of complication or another. Including when healing. He said it can be done and many successfully do it, including himself when medically necessary, its just that he doesn’t like doing it. So I had to wait almost ten weeks in between. I feel like revisions are the least spoken about of all these surgeries. We speak of each as if they are individual and never of what it means to put them together in one body.

It is different because of the types of surgery and because I am getting mine done at Mayo most of it comes from research. I know I almost cried reading that "soft food stage/phase 3" is 6 weeks! I am getting a revision done..maybe longer recovery?
