    Refusals

Some insurance companies will not cover revision without medical necessity. The insurance companies believe if you've blown one surgery, you will not succeed with another. Some employers do not have weight loss surgery covered under their policies.

    Banded but a little worried

Honestly I'm kind of shocked at what you weren't told! Good grief! Your surgeon needs a refresher. I was told NO Water 15 min before, never during, and none 15 min after eating. It can wash food through more quickly and "bypass" the band(in which case, why bother getting banded if you're just going to wash the food through it?) and it CAN stretch the pouch, eating and drinking at the same time. So I say you need to really try to STOP THAT! LOL One poster here said her doctor told her "If you continue drinking and eating the band will fail. Period" That scared her straight. Where did you get your surgery? Maybe you can go to another seminar there? Sounds like the one you attended skipped a lot of stuff that you need to know!

    Question for Experienced Bandsters?

Its definately hardest until you starting getting fills that make you realize you really WILL stop feeling hungry all the time and you WILL feel satisfied with a small amount of food - it was that way for me anyway. I am still on the liquid phase of my diet since my revision surgery but normally when I go to a restuarant I try to choose something healthy. Unless its Friday night. On Friday night I eat whatever I want (but I don't binge!) and that usually means Papa John's bread sticks with LOTs of garlic butter or Outback Steakhouse cheese fries. Ohhh yum. I like to eat at El Pollo Loco because the chicken is fabulous and its easy to remove the skin. I like Taco Bell because one soft taco is filling and a lot less calories and fat than a hamburger and fries. But for the most part I cut calories when I cook at home by using light or fat free substitutes as often as possible. I always eat low-cal, low-sugar ice cream and I always use "I can't believe its not butter - LIGHT" for the other things. So that helps a lot too I think. The thing I like so much about the band is that it puts control of food back in my hands. Before I had the band I would literally eat out of control and just gorge myself trying desperately to feel satisfied and never feeling it. Now food doesn't control me and I find it easy to make the right decision about what I eat or prepare for myself.
  4. RNY is designed to malabsorb. I would just like to clarify this for people because it really can be confusing. It is not a complication or cause of the surgery. I have never thought about the rate of malabsorbtion nor have I heard that term used. I did spend quite a bit of time on this with my surgeon and nut because initially I was very worried about this part of bypass. It does in fact depend on many things. Medications and nutrients are malabsorbed in different places. For example we will always malabsorb Calcium because it apparently absorbed in a different area within our new digestive system. Protein on the other hand is less impacted. There is some belief that malabsorption lasts forever which is why we must take Vitamins for life. The body does adjust some to this. My own personal experience is that I definately malabsorb some of my medications. I am on cyclosporine which I take for a few months a year for severe psoriatic arthritis. When I weighed 310lbs I would need to take 200 milligrams a day and it would clear me up quickly. Now I am 164lbs and recently had to go back on it. We started with 100 for a month when that didn't budge it we moved to 200 and now I am up to 300 and it's barely touching my psoriasis. Same thing with pain medication. I take it and had to have it doubled and then it barely lasts for an hour. Now we moved me to a patch and that seems to work much better. Why are you interested in the rate?

    port question?

Wow your ports are so high! Mine is about three inches left of my navel. Previously, if I did a really intense ab workout, I would get a little sore. They found a leak and I had to have a revision on 12/9/08. The doctor moved it slightly but it is still roughly in the same place. I will see if it makes a difference.

    The Fat Girl Wakes Up

The system showed that you quoted my reply on this thread, but I'm not sure if that was your intent. But, I wanted to clear up any possible misconceptions. Both of my surgeries were covered by insurance. I was referred to the band surgeon, and all was fine until I started complaining about pain and issues with my band. I did seek out my revision surgeon, and since Tricare doesn't cover VSG outside of MTFs, he was my best option with his experience level, and stats I felt confident in surgeon choice. I could have self-paid, but honestly, it wasn't realistic for me to do so with a husband in Afghanistan.

Has anyone else been told this?

I saw my post earlier in this thread and realized that I wrote it before I decided to go with the band instead of bypass. My surgeon does both; he does more bypasses than bands, but he's highly regarded in the banding community. My starting BMI was 50ish. Good luck in your Quest for for the band!

    Having 2nd thoughts now

I had thought about which surgery to have also. My doctor suggested bypass due to better results and since I have heard. He said my heartburn may get worse with the sleeve. I have a father in law that had bypass several years ago and he still has problems with vomiting, diarrhea. I chose the sleeve and haven't had single problem. I am so glad I did this. 53 lbs down since July. Nancy C
  9. After asking thousands of questions to my surgeon, he decided to do the Mini Gastric Bypass because I’m a bit on the smaller side and doing the RNY would cause me to be VERY underweight. I’m a bit nervous! What should I be expecting post op?
  10. I GOT APPROVED!!!! Anyone else having surgery as there Christmas Present?! Surgery Next Friday! Leaving for the Hospital Thursday! Have a 5 hr Road Trip, do cleanse at the hotel Thursday night and a 3 day stay, be home Sun. 23! Anyone else have surgery out of town?! Also What did you pack?!!?
  11. Me! Im having gastric bypass on the 20th! Once I got the approval phone call about a week ago I was sooo excited. But I have to be honest, I'm getting kind of nervous and of course im over thinking all of it and thinking "what if im one of those people who doesn't lose any weight!" Maybe its all the protein drinks talking but I just feel blahhh. well and the fact that ive lost like only 3 pounds on this pre op diet
  12. My husband was against it too and we were cash pay, but I told him I refuse to live the rest of my life this way. Our daughter had gastric bypass a year ago and looks just beautiful. She didn't exercise at first either, but now that she's lost her weight, she has her energy back and started working out and doing Zumba to tone up. Lapband will force you to make life changes on eating. You will not regret it if you go ahead with the surgery. Oh by the way, I would have had the surgery with or without his approval. The mental aspect of losing your weight and being happy is very important.

    Insurance AFTER banding?

I've read that many insurance companies don't want to give coverage to post-op gastric bypass patients. Has anyone here experienced any trouble like that since being banded?

    Just curious why.....

I've wondered about this, too. Given ALL the facts I cannot understand why someone would choose RNY over banding unless there is really a dire health situation that requires immediate and substantial weight loss. RNY boosters seem to gloss over the fact that the effects of the surgery will fade after some time, and to say the risks are essentially the same as those with "any surgery." Hah. There's a lot of talk about the "tool" aspect of WLS, and how patients have to use it correctly or it won't work. But there's no TIME to learn to use a bypass correctly--immediately after surgery RNY patients are forced to eat their tiny amounts and avoid any foods that might be problematic. This strikes me as a formula for emotional and psychological difficulties, added on top of the various physical challenges RNY surgery presents. Yikes. Nope, I don't get it. People opting for bypass often see it as a path of immediate results and can't or won't see past the near future. I know I used to believe that "if I can only get this weight off I KNOW I'll be able to keep it off!" But we all know that's not true, and even having compromised digestion and metabolism won't guarantee permanent results. *Being* thin doesn't mean one will *stay* thin. EATING LESS is all that can make that happen. And one doesn't necessarily learn to eat less with the bypass.

    Just curious why.....

You dont sound over critical..believe me I tried talking my friend out of this but many think quick weight losss is the way to go. I have another friend who had the bypass 2 years ago and I saw her yesterday for the first time in about 6 months, she got to goal and had the plastic surgery to remove the loose skin but when I saw her yeaterday one look and I knew shad had been putting weight back on and of course she told me she had gained about 15 pounds back, I noticed though she was grazing all day long near the food table. Not to mention she had the dumping syndrome going on all day long due to her sugar intake with the cookies and brownines she was eating, if she wasnt at the food table she was in the bathroom. This is what happens alot with bypass patients there window of opportunity runs out and eventually the start regaining the weight back unlike us who are banded can just go get a fill to tighten our bands to decrease our appetite and our intake. Yesterday was the firsttime she had seen me since my surgery, she was very surpised with my progress and very happy for me. I just hope and pray for her sake she gets control over this and does not put all her wieght back on.
  16. @@Bjordan2 that consult was last March. He has since looked up info on the surgery (I think confusing it with the older gastric bypass) & has told me he doesn't want me to do it due to the dangers. Wants me to try exercising it all off & eating better instead. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    I feel like a failure

You only fail when you give up. You clearly haven't given up. So, this isn't failure, it's a set back. I felt like a failure as well, I lost a decent amount of weight, then that was it, gained and lost, over and over. For 5 years. I stopped going in for check ups, etc, because I didn't' want to be "that patient" that failed with the band. Guess what. My surgeon not only laughed off my "failure" but advised me that the band was over hyped and that my results were typical. I still have a long way to go, that's why I'm having Band to Bypass revision in a few days. Just remember not to beat yourself up over falling down. Just get back up, dust yourself off, dry your eyes and get back on the path.
  18. Hi All, I had a band removed and gastric bypass performed on Dec. 16th. During surgery the spleen was nicked and had to be removed. So instead of the 5 little cuts, I have 4 little cuts and one REALLY big one. The staples came out today (don't ask) and I am healing nicely. I was wondering if anyone else has a similar story and what your healing progress is like. How much exercise can you do? How much are you eating, etc.? Cheers

    Anybody Reschedule Their Date?

Yes. Originally I was scheduled for 7/18/17 but I was moving that next week and since you can’t lift more than 5lbs I needed to be rescheduled. Was revised on 8/8/17. Easy peasy.

  21. Cheating? The lap-band is simply one treatment choice for the epidemic called obesity. If the FDA- yes our government-didn't continually approve foods and drugs that contain chemicals that create food ADDICTION, our society would be forced to eat like our grandparents did. You know, meat and vegetables, gardens in the back yard.......organic foods that didn't degrade our bodies and cause disease. Like she said, we have to do our part too and it does also make me mad what others say. Even recently a friend commented on her fathers bypass surgery "anyone can have surgery".....that right there gave away how she feels about it...that it's cheating! Ughhh....I guess I'd rather be called a cheater than be fat until I die!
  22. Hi I am from Ireland. I had my band inserted 3 years ago. I lost 130lbs in 2 years and then despite several fills lost restriction. I gained 40lbs since last May. The clinic I had the band done with went bust so I was left with no aftercare. I eventually got an appointment for a fantastic private surgeon in Dublin who arranged an OGD and to my devestation he discovered I had almost 100% erosion. I had my band removed in February. My surgeon was able to remove the band through my mouth and my port through a small incision in my abdomen. I have only gained 5lbs since removal but emotionally I am so devestated. I cannot cope with being able to eat normally again and I am so scared about regaining the weight again. I have discussed the posibility of having more wls with my surgeon. He said he does not rule it out but he wants me to see a food counsellor and dietician first. I would love to hear from anyone who has gone through this and what advice they would have. I am very open to having more surgery. I am just so depressed and consumed with gaining the weight again. Thanks Brenners x

    Surgery after pregnancy

My son was 16 months old and 25 lbs when I had my bypass. I didn't pick him up for the first week and a half. I picked him up the second week and only held him for small periods of time. I'm now 4 weeks out and hold him as needed with no issues. Sent from my SM-G900V using BariatricPal
  24. First banded 2009, slipped, had a revision 3-25. Ever since surgery feeling sluggish tired .....new onset symptons are dizziness, light headed, when I'm standing up feeling like I'm about to pass out......Doc says might be that the band interfere with my vasageal. Has any one have this happen to them. Is it curable....please help
  25. The choice is yours, I feel your pain, I had the bypass and gained all but 40 pounds back, just had the lap band at 270 pounds, however when o was going through the approval process, I realized that band or no band that this body of MINE is MY RESPONSIBILITY! From March 3 til my final appt. With my surgeon I demanded from myself to start eating healthy, and to SAVE MY OWN LIFE! I am happy to report that I went from 291 to 271 in less than 2 months and this was prior to my pre op diet for the lap band. I stopped fast food, eating out, and did 5 servings of fruit and 4 veggies a day, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU MUST GO BACK TO THE BASICS, LEAN PROTEIN FIRST! From my experience Me and my first surgery failed each other, you have to take responsibility for why you are where you are! If we that have gained weight back be honest our habits drastically changed from when we first lost the weight! Change your habits, if your band is now positioned correctly, go get your fills and save your life! I wish you luck, YOU CAN DO IT!
