How soon after post op do you start strenous exercise?
MountianGirl replied to djay210's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told 6 weeks so I followed that. I did walk about 20 min a day during that time but nothing hardcore. You've just had major abdominal surgery-let your body heal. You have the rest of your life to do strenuous exercise. -
How soon after post op do you start strenous exercise?
BigTink2LilTink replied to djay210's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As other's have stated here, you need about 4 to 6 weeks to heal up before you can start doing more strenuous workouts such as weight lifting, swimming, etc. Trust me when I say walk, walk, and walk as much as you can doing those first few weeks after surgery. It does help out, especially with the bowels and needing to pass stool. As for the feeling tired, yup. You aren't getting in nearly as much nutrients as your body was use to so you're burning up that energy really fast. I think for the first month and a half post surgery for me I spent as much of my free time as possible sleeping. That also helped me not think about all the food I was missing too. But that was probably just my thing. The food mentals. -
How soon after post op do you start strenous exercise?
AngelaWilliamsMD replied to djay210's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon recommended non-strenuous activity for 4 weeks, so I've been walking 30-60 minutes at a time. -

I should add that my husband who is also my best friend is also a big support! We are doing this together as he was sleeved just 2 1/2 weeks before me. He has been the best. Walking and exercising with me. We've done new thing together like going on a hike too. We eat basically the same foods and he does 99% of the cooking for us. I couldn't do this without @@Fatty McFatster !!!!! -

Good for you... I'm 3 weeks post TT, be prepared for an emotional ride, but so worth it! -
Are you taking your vitamins and getting your water and protein in? Its very importamt that ypu do. It will help in your recovery. Have you tried electrolytes to help with the lethargy? During the first week or 2 after surgery I found that to be a big help. I found powdered electrolytes at the pharmacy. You just add the powder to water and it doesn't taste bad. It took about a week out for me to stop feeling tired and needing naps.

Post Surgery (As in just out of Hospital) Weight Gain
Jennifer Rogers replied to babelfish5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep. I had lost 10 pounds during the 2 week preop diet and when I got home 2 days after surgery, I had regained that 10 pounds. It took me 4 days to get it off. -
My doctor put me on two weeks of clear liquids which I am wrapping up today. I have lost 17 pounds in those two weeks. I am shocked but happy. Tomorrow, I start full liquids. I have been worrying about that move because while I am excited to eat something different, I don't really want to deviate from my current path because I don't want to go back to old habits - eating just to eat or because I want food - not that I need it or am hungry for it. I have been reading about people not being succesful or gaining weight. I don't understand fully how this happens. If your stomach is smaller, how can someone eat beyond what they are supposed to eat?? So, last night, I had a dream that I was able eat just like I used to. I felt that I was a fool for having the surgery thinking of course I lost 17 pounds in two weeks I am only drinking and barely taking in any calories...when I can eat again I am in trouble and this won't work. Someone please tell me how somenoe gains weight after having the sleeve. I want to make sure that I don't do that.

I'm A BANDSTER!!!! 4 days Post op!
gentlespirit replied to Dancer's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Congratulations!!! It's an amazing journey. I'm 3 weeks out and SO glad I did this. Hope everything continues to go well for you! Keep sipping... Emily -
Like you, I am definitely a planner. I made sure to try all the premier protein shakes, buy enough of everything to get me through my first two weeks post op (I'm 1 week post currently) and my words of advice are simple. Don't spend a lot of money. Everything I liked prior to surgery, I am struggling with post. Nothing tastes the same and it was days before that changed, but even more so - I suddenly can't tolerate anything cold or even room temperature. So, the only thing working for me in homemade bone broth soup. I can sip and it doesn't bother me and sit in me like a brick. Popsicles are just now becoming a friend and jello is squish around in my mouth until it becomes warm liquid. Try things, but don't go overboard in the purchasing. - I read someone's post that said similar but I didn't listen. Oh how I wish I did. The good news is that most of the stuff has a long shelf life, so it will be there as I go through many of my new stages with food reintroduction.

Warning... Debbie Downer
Webchickadee replied to tbstacks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's early days yet tbstacks! I know, every day feels like it drags on forever and it doesn't seem to be getting better. But you VERY slowing are improving and healing. And in another week or two, you will probably feel more positive. I am 3 weeks out today and the first 2 weeks were really tough. liquids are boring.....the weird taste in your mouth can drive you insane.....energy is low....changes are happening but not enough that people's jaws are dropping (they will in time though!).....you hubby might be trying not to focus on your weight so much to help you "normalize" (a positive way to look at it, no?).....and OF COURSE you're grieving the loss of food! But in a few months, when you're stable and back on solid foods and have figured out what works and doesn't work for you....how much you can eat in a regular meal...now much Protein and liquid works for you.....how to vary your diet to keep things interesting rather than a chore....it will seem so much better! There's a good chance you don't need meds for anti-depression right now (though if you feel strongly about it, you should see your primary care physician). Your energy is low due to the low calorie intake. Perhaps a B12 (sublingual) supplement daily will help with that, and maybe you need some Iron supplements as well? As soon as you can start doing a bit of exercise (even just walking now is very good!), it should help elevate your mood. The natural endorphins released by your body during exercise can do wonders to help combat depression and really make you feel alive again! Later on, you can try low-impact aerobics such as swimming or water-aerobics. Exercise bike is also good if you're not comfortable getting outside and jogging/running or even fast-walking. And of course, as you start to add "mushies" and find out what your new stomach's actual boundaries are, it will be a daily experiment to find out how your new eating life will be! That should keep you busy for a while. Remember, you've just gone through a MAJOR surgery! It takes time for the body to shake off the after-effects of the anaesthetic, the shock from the surgery, the stomach needs to heal, your metabolism is trying to survive (right now it thinks you're starving with the sudden drop in calories), and the fat you're losing is also releasing alot of hormones into your body in a flood and causing mood changes as well. There's alot going on inside of you! Hang in there. Things will "normalize" in the next couple of months, a little bit at a time. Until one day you'll wake up and it will feel "normal" again. Only a new better, slimmer, healthier "normal"! -

Kzcar, that is something I had thought about. I actually went to an endocrinologist pre surgery for a complete work up, and he said all of my levels were great and normal. He did want me to come back three-four months after surgery to see if they've changed. -

Hello...I too was banded March 2...i am on a full liquid diet, I eat mashed up homemade soups and yogurt. This morning I has a hard boiled egg (chopped up very thin) and it went down good, no problems. I am a sweet person and love dessert, a few timed i have had a spoonful of vanilla ice cream...the coldness feel really good after my 1/2 cup of dinner...in 2 more week i will be moving into soft foods, and then a week after that i have an appt for my first fill.....Good luck on your adventure!!! -
Just wanted to do a little shoutout to my sister TriciaN. we started this journey at the same time but due to different insurances we can't get banded together. When she told me she was able to do it within a month of our first consultation i was extremely upset that I wouldn't have the support of my sister. During these last few weeks she has always been there to tell me what she's going through and tried to give me pointers. She is 8 days into the presurgery diet and i know she's miserable but she doesn't let on. She keeps right on chugging those dang shakes she hates so much and no matter what obstacle comes her way she's smiling. I'm so proud of her. She is truly my inspiration. i love you sissy and wish you the best!

Thank you Freedom! I appreciate you sharing the details about your surgery. I do worry about those first waking moments and yours sounded very doable. I think the naps and reading sound like heaven! I have 2 boys & a job at an elementy school and while my life is wonderful there are few moments to myself. I will be banded on May 12th! I hope this week flies by!! Again.. thanks for sharing!:biggrin2:

Pain In Left Shoulder After Lap Band Surgery ?
ChanceTX77084 replied to kath109's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Newbie, I had my surgery on the 5th so I know exactly what you are talking about. The shoulder pain is completely normal. I read up on it and they said that when they do the laproscopic surgery and inflate you with CO2, the coldness of the air does minor nerve damage. The nerve runs from your stomach up through your shoulder, and you will feel the pain in your shoulder...apparently your left shoulder, because that is where my hurt as well. It repairs itself, so no need to worry. I've also 'heard' that it is caused from gas pressure as well, not sure because that wasn't in the article. I'm having hell with food this week. I want to eat everything in sight. I'm not, of course, but it seems like the only things that I can eat are carb filled Soups...so I've already gained a pound and I've been losing like crazy. Not sure what I am going to eat tomorrow, but it will not be carbs. Good luck. -
My doctor flat out said "Smoke = No surgery!" Needless to say I wanted shed of the blubber worse than I wanted to smoke. So after 34 years of smoking, the day that I heard that I layed them down. That was Jan. 5th this year. Just a few weeks ago. But now I didn't exactly do it cold turkey either. Well I did for about the first 24 hours. I went to my family doctor and got a prescription for "Chantix"! OMG talk about the wonderdrug of the century!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: I smoked 2 packs a day for years and years and years. For the last week I've only taken ONE of my Chantix tablets! No cravings.... GO FIGURE! I may start back on the Chantix just before my surgery and for a short while after. Just to hedge my bets about making sure I stay smoke free. I'd rather live smaller and smoke free than be a smoker and look like a beached whale! I'm so glad that I quit.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any information on an instructional video or tutorial of some sort that I could give to my Doctor. He is willing to learn how to do my fills and handle my post-op care, and nothing would thrill me more. It will save me hours on the road...since I would have to drive at least three hours to the nearest fill doc. Also, he is willing to charge me for a regular office visit. Would love any feedback!:help:
