  1. Hi to all you fellow banders out there. All I can say is "Thank goodness for this website"!! I am 10 days post-band & for the last 5 days I have suffered from a reallly bad tummy upset. I'd not read anything on this subject anywhere else until I found this forum & was really starting to panic. I'm still on liquids (mainly s/f squashes/cordials, jelly & smooth yogurt/fromage frais, with the occasional icecream!) for two weeks (on instructions of my surgeon) then I can start on the mushy stage! Roll on Wednesday!! I've been lucky so far, no pain since day 3, no meds, no gas pain, no port pain, but my major concern was with the band slipping! The hospital placed sooooo much emphasis on not eating things for the first couple of weeks that would make your stomach muscles contract, so as not to break the stitches keeping the band in place. I'm sure that my stomach must have been moving like a washing machine, the feelings this tummy upset has generated!! Can anyone put my mind at rest on a couple of other things? Up until Thursday, I felt a real restriction when taking my liquids, even small sips of liquid seem to stick in my throat, but since yesterday morning, the fluids have gone down ok. Is this just the swelling in my stomach going down & the fluids passing through more easily or is this a sign that something is wrong with the band? Lastly, my wounds don't seem to be healing at all, not even the hole in the back of my hand from the drip, which is only small. I have changed the dressings & kept them clean & dry, they don't seem to be infected or anything, but I'm worried that the stitches will have dissolved & the wounds aren't closing up. Is this normal & is there anything I can do or take to speed up my bodies healing process? I've emailed the hospital for their views on the above, but with it being the weekend, I don't expect I'll hear anything till monday, earliest. Many thanks, in ancticipation! Suzi

    Binge Eating Food Funeral

I'm on my pre-op diet and have 6 lbs left to shed by April 8 th . I have been eating protein bars for meal replacements and they really work well with a cup of coffee . I try to stick to the 200 calorie ones and then I will have a container /!serving of Greek yogurt . I find this makes calorie counting easy .

    1 week post-op...

I had Gastric sleeve done on 05/06. The first day was miserable.. Even the smallest of sips hurt. By day three that was much improved, as I was able to eat a 5 oz yogurt and drink 5 oz at a time. No pain meds needed after day three either. The hardest thing by far is the liquid diet. I feel starved. It's taking great mental strength to follow but I am doing it. I didn't think I would feel this hungry with such a small stomach. It's pure hell, but this too shall pass.
  4. I was sleeved 10/27 and I only had a one night stay in the hospital. I had not complications and no nausea. I did have gas bubbles really bad the first time I tried chicken broth. I got really car sick on the way home but I didn't throw up. When I go home I felt really overwhelmed and had second thoughts about going home so early. I was able to sleep off my doubts but it wasn't until today that I started to feel less weak and more normal. I have been able to get in my yogurt, milk, and Water. I haven't had any nausea with any of the food I've tried on my full liquid diet. My pain level has definitely diminished but I still have JP drain in which tugs sometimes uncomfortable. I get that taken out tomorrow which I'm excited about. All and all, I'm feeling less helpless and more like this was the right decision. Plus 5 lbs lost in 4 days isn't bad! How is everyone else doing?
  5. October 10th here... Not so good. I am so weak from no protein... I have tried some but my taste buds have changed. Gonna keep trying maybe go back to Chobani yogurt... Frustrated
  6. So my nut said I should be eating 6 small meals a day (1/4-1/2 cup at each) and I can't possibly do that! I am 4 weeks out, have lost 29 lbs, manage to get in all my chewable Vitamins (yuck!) and feel great. I get to work at 7:30 am, have my Protein shake (1/2 c), Then my snack @ 10:30 or 11:00: another 1/2 c Protein Shake. lunch will be @ 1;30 or 2:00: 1/2 c cream Soup or fat free yogurt w/protein added. Then I have dinner @ 6:00 pm. If I add another afternoon snack I wouldn't be having dinner until 8:00! And that would still only be 5 meals. I manage 4-5 8oz glasses of Water and have been doing 30 minutes on the treadmill (slowly) 5 days a week since 2 weeks out. My daily calories average between 450-500 per day, less than 40 carbs, and 60-70g of protein daily. So I'm wondering if this sounds okay to you guys out there and if not, how do you possibly get all those meals in? My nut insists I follow her plan.
  7. Did anyone not loose any weight on their pre op diet even tho they followed it to the T? My band is scheduled for the 23rd and I've been on my diet since Saturday. I hate being a slave to the scale but 4 days later of veggies, plain oatmeal, yogurt, and Protein Drinks u would thnk I'd have lost some weight...even an ounce? Def not gonna let this bring me down in anyway but was just curious.

    Why?

Started mushy foods this week- yogurt, cottage cheese, etc and now I've gained 1/2 pound? What the heck?! That's very discouraging. Anyone else have this problem? I'm still eating my protein shakes too and I drink all of my 74oz of water. I'm feeling really scared about the fact that I'm only in my 2nd week and I've gained.

    Sweet tooth

I've had sweet things but don't count them as "slips". Protein shakes, fruit, yogurt, pudding, fruit drinks (like crystal light, and Popsicles have all been plenty sweet.

Lapband - Moving on to solids

You should be fine with that. I am not a lap-band patient, but us sleevers still deal with the slider issue. I have protein smoothies all the time, and it holds me over pretty well. I would choose the lowest sugar Greek yogurt you can find. As far as fruit, maybe some raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and/or strawberries. I add 1/2 banana to mine along with about a 1/2 cup of frozen spinach. If you add all of these in frozen, they make a great milkshake type protein shake. I have made 32 ounces at one time, and divided it into four 8 oz. servings. I then drank two each day. It really is more filling than regular protein shakes. If you have access to seeds in Scotland, those are great as well. Chia, Hemp and Flax seeds add good fats and protein to your shakes as well. Good luck!
  11. actually the low fat cottage cheese is high and protien, compared to the yogurt. It is on my diet I can have 1 cup with unsweetened applesauce on it, it is the highlight of my day!

    Good eating Habits

You can definitely enjoy treats like ice cream post-op. Not immediately post-op, obviously, but certainly by the time you are in maintenance. I had half a piece of Cheesecake Factory cheesecake last night! The most important things post-op will be Protein and Water. You need need need to put protein first. But if you are meeting your protein goals, then a little ice cream or mashed potatoes or whatever once in a while is fine. I think right now, pre-op, there are some things you can work on that will make your post-op life easier. Start going ahead and putting protein first. Eat your protein before your starches or vegetables at each meal. Start working on finding high protein Snacks you can enjoy (greek yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese, nuts, Jerky, turkey sticks, etc.). Start tracking your protein. Ideally you will want to get up to 100 grams a day. Start getting a sense of how much protein is in the foods you eat regularly. Start cutting back on carbs. Your pre-op diet will likely be a no-carb diet. So it will only help you to kick that carb habit sooner than later! If you smoke, quit now! You will be required to quit prior to surgery and giving up smoking AND food at the same time will be too much to handle. Cut back on caffeine and alcohol too. You won't be allowed any of either for at least 30 days post-op by most plans, so again, easier to phase it out now than have to go cold turkey at the time of your surgery. Start eating slowly and trying to not eat and drink at the same time. The not eating and drinking at the same time thing will seem impossible at first. For me, I had to just not even have a beverage within reach while eating, otherwise I would drink it without even thinking about it. As for eating slowly... chew each bite as thoroughly as possible and set your fork down between bites.

    Liquid diet?

Falling whisper!!! Thanks and yes!!! No cooking!!! Lol has no one licked the. Brownie batter before cooking it lol!!! My yogurt and pudding don't get cooked lol
  15. Hi guys I'm Julie, 40 years old a d am set to have my lap band on the 6th April I'm so excited not even thought about being the surgery just want it done Thought I would share my experience I started the Pre op diet yesterday and have been advised to go with slim fast and mullet light yogurts, plenty of Water and no sugar juices. It's day 2 and feeling ok not to bad but after a few more days it may be a different story I will keep you up to date on my progress Found this sure very good
  16. does anybody know if cottage cheese would be ok instead of yogurt for the pre op diet its high in protein and its a soft soft food?
  17. But if you’re hitting your protein goals without them and you hate them, why bother? On those days you’re not quite hitting your goals maybe do a yogurt or string cheese or cottage cheese or any type of protein you actually like. This road is rough enough without having to force yourself into something you truly dislike. But I do get how easy of a grab and go they are. Have you tried any of the protein waters? The brand I was drinking pre op makes me gag now (so I totally get it!!) Good luck and let us know what you find!

    No restriction?

Make sure it is all protein. A full egg is 7 grams of protein and only one ounce in volume. Log your food so that you are getting enough protein. I also ate refried beans at that stage. It's high in protein. Greek yogurt too. Add unflavored protein powder to all your meals including eggs before you cook them. It will help keep hunger away.
  19. Had surgery August 1, all went well and surgeon fixed a small hiatal hernia at same time. I've had no real pain and for that, I am very thankful. I am still extremely week! One week out I saw PCP and tests showed I was anemic(no surprise) and I had H-pylori-stomach infection. Until then I was able to get liquids in and close to 90 gr of protein. Put me on 3 meds for two weeks to get rid of h-pylori, Now I can hardly stomach anything. Very difficult to get liquids in. I can eat mashed potatoes and gravy, pimento cheese, and today, cottage cheese. Liquids make me sick but I'm trying to get down.....protein shakes are a no-go! I do put unflavored protein in everything I eat. I can also do pudding, yogurt, jello, and SF popsicles. I am on mushies...but nothing tastes tolerable with this medicine. I started back to college and I am a walking wimp! Brain fog, and so weak I feel like I can fall out at any time. Please suggest something to eat that might help with energy. I am barely getting those chewable vitamins down. Also eating 2 calcium bars a day. I have B-12 patches, and liquid B-12 and taking Vitamin D twice a week. You'd think Iwould be bouncing off the walls, but I'm dragging my butt from one day and on. P.S. I'm 53 years old. I have lost 20lbs as of yesterday. Happy for that but, I need to get back into my life. Thanks for suggestions! Wishing everyone else well!

    protein, and amount of food

I eat teaspoon of yogurt and cottage cheese. Some times I sprinkle a little bit of non-flavored Protein on top for a little bit of extra protein. I also a do soft scrambles egg. I couple this with my Protein drinks. I totally appreciate the disgust with your protein drinks! Now that I'm adding some real food into the mix, I find that the shakes aren't so bad.
  22. Ever since I got banded, June 1, I have been having major problems sleeping. I'm not in pain at all, so that's not the issue, but I just toss and turn all night. I don't know what the problem is. I've even been taking my Ambien and still...nothing. I haven't had a full nights sleep in about 5 days. It's KILLING me! Has anyone ever had problems with this after surgery? Ugh! Also, today I finally get to move from "clear liquids" to "full liquids" which, for some reason, includes things like oatmeal and yogurt (I'm not complaining, I've just never considered them liquid before). I'm super excited because I really miss CHEWING but I'm kind of scared that it won't sit right with me and I'll end up getting sick. Any advice?

    Just Got My Surgery Date!

Tracey, that's awesome! What an exciting time this is for you! I'm so glad you're able to move forward now in the direction you want to go in! Since you asked for suggestions, might I suggest making sure your food tastes good? This is important before surgery, but even more important afterwards. You'll be eating much less than you did before, so you can afford to add a pinch of garlic, some lemon zest, some herbs and spices, whatever you're hankering for! If all you eat is chicken broth and yogurt smoothies, that gets old kinda fast. Might I also suggest that you test drive some non-flavored Protein powders? You can literally put them in anything, and most post-op bariatric diets that I've seen rely on Protein Powder pretty heavily. Even people who can get their protein from other sources, and have gone on to a solid diet sometimes can benefit from using protein powder in sauces, Soups, beverages, etc. I'm so excited for you! You're going to do great!
  24. Mix protein with liquid trying to kill two birds with one stone. My average is about 60 gms protein, trying hard to get another 20 in though. Would mix with cream soup, yogurt, sf pudding etc can only have 2 tablespoons, so can't get a full 20 gms.

    2 weeks post op questions

There is a very good resource here on the forum - a wonderful woman whose screen name is Tiffykins. She has been sleeved for around a year and a half to two years and has been very successful. She posted yesterday in response to a topic titled "how much should I be eating?" I am going to quote from her response: " Measured portions, specifically 2-4oz should be your target meal size. That's by volume for the most part, you could do probably 6oz yogurt and other super soft/liquidy type foods. Personally, I would not be eating hashbrowns or any type of white carb during the losing stage, but that's just how I chose to lose weight. You might not get a full signal until it's too late, then you'll be puking or hurting. I didn't get a "full signal" for months post-op so measuring was my key to not overeating. I was prescribed 600-800 calories, 60+gr of Protein and no more than 30-40gr of carbs per day. Measuring foods gives you a few things; 1) Staying within a set dietary guideline 2) Won't leave you hurting or puking 3) Will teach you to undereat your sleeve Eating until full or stuffed helped get me fat. I was specifically told to undereat my sleeve, to measure, and to stop looking for that full signal because if you constantly overeat it is not changing any of the habits that led to us having surgery." Look for her on the site, and check out her content. She is a great source of good data from a person who has "walked the walk" and lost her weight. Good luck on your journey!
