  1. April, You're right, sounds like the liquid pre-op diet has you a little loopy! Truthfully, I believe it's something we all begin to worry about as the date draws near. I was flip-flopping between the money argument (I was self pay) and trying to convince myself I could try again on my own. Who was I kidding? The most success I've ever had alone was 25 lbs or so, and like they say - I got it back and then some! Best advice I can give you is - YOU deserve to do this for your own health. For this one instance, think of yourself! You have some wicked comorbidities added to the fraternal history of health problems. But, you're on the right path to doing something about it now. The next few weeks will be a nervous, anxious time... I spent it connecting with the great people here and learned I wasn't all alone. I hope you find something useful here too! I had an endoscopy a couple of months prior to Lapband surgery, where they did find a small hernia. It didn't require repair, but that didn't keep me from using it as my excuse anyway!! And, it's handy because I can still use it as my excuse why I can't eat as much as before.. "hernia didn't heal properly and I still get bad heartburn" - will keep everyone from trying to get me to eat more!! by then, they usually want to give me a remedy  My Mom & Dad, brother, and one close friend know... I would say tell your mom -- you'll need her support. If she can't offer that, then she doesn't deserve to share in your success with the band. She's your mom, I hope she'll be real happy when she see's the improvement in your health. All the best, Karla
  2. Although my surgeon isn't requiring weight loss as a condition of surgery; he would like to see me lose 10-15 pounds before. The two week liquid diet prior to surgery will likely achieve that goal without any additional effort on my part.
  3. Life has gotten in the way the last 2 months. I was unable to take care of me the way I was supposed. Not exercising, not enough Protein all sorts of things. I gained 8lbs. Now 3 weeks ago I was sitting here crying feeling like a failure. I'm back on track in the last 3 weeks. walking 3 miles a day, getting my protein and Water. I have lost those 8lbs. I haven't had a fill in two months.I go for one tomorrow. There will be no great loss, but no gain and I realized I'm good with that. I can't beat myself up for no being able to take care of myself (I was the primary care giver for my MIL the last 3 months and she passed a month ago). I've lost 60lbs since surgery in November. One hundred total since last May. When I think of it that way I'm pretty proud of how far I have come in the last year. So now onto the NSV. I can ride my bike without the seat hurting my rearend. Pretty happy about that. I haven't been able to do that in about 3 years. So all in all a good week for me. Thanks for listening.

    Lap band? or Gbp?

Nykee, don't think for one second that you don't have to work with the bypass as well!! When all is said and done you will be better off for having had the band, because you will have kicked these addictions and habits that you know are keeping you from getting healthy. The bypass would make you lose weight, initially, but unless you got a real grip on those harmful habits the weight would come back on after the first year or so. Why not try substituting calorie-free liquids for your milk and juice? Breaking the kind of drinking habit that you have will be hard to do all at once. (I mean between meals--you really do want to NOT drink at all for an hour after eating.) Lots of liquid is a good thing, but not if it's loaded with calories. Try those great flavored waters! They're really delicious and you can drink three gallons of them if you want. Propel and Fruit2O are two brands, and there are loads of others.

Fell off the band wagon this weekend

What Restless said! We went away for a 3-day weekend to the apple orchards in Wisc. I did great all weekend, except Sunday my "lunch" was an apple turnover and a few hours later a piece of apple pie with ice cream. Were they wise choices? Of course not. Will they define me? No way. We go there once a year so I'm not about to beat myself up for treating myself. That is definitely "going off plan" but to be honest it is NOTHING compared to what I would have done preband. I never would have stopped at 1 turnover in the past, or it would have been most of a big bag of potato chips, and trust me that could occur at least once a week in the old days! What I love about the band is although the sweets did pass too easily it still restricted how much I could take in and I was actually craving Protein by that evening and it was easy for me to get back to healthy choices. Don't beat yourself up over it - it's life. We won't be perfect.

    8-9-06 An eventful day

Today I went to the hospital to have blood drawn. My PCP wants to check my thyroid, blood suger and cholesterol levels. Everyone was super nice there and made me feel really comfortable. As I was walking down the maze of the hospital I happened to get a glimpse of the surgeon who would be doing the surgery. I only saw him for a few seconds but he looked kind and gentle. He had smiling eyes and was casually talking to a co-worker. Right after I had my blood drawn, I went to get the oil in my car changed. My phone unexpectedly range and it was the surgeon's nurse. She told me that they had a cancellation and I would be able to see the surgeon today for my pre-op consult! eek! I took the opportunity as I will be beginning to teach in a few weeks and will have very limited time for all of these appts.! I was not originally supposed to see him until Aug. 21st!!! Wish me luck, I will be leaving in just a bit, armed with quite a list of ?s from the board! Thank you!

    Port Discomfort...

I had my first fill last week and have experienced a lot of discomfort with the port. This past week wearing dress pants or jeans have been unbearable. Anyone experience this?
  9. On December 31st at 10 am I underwent weight loss surgery. This is something that had been weighing on my mind for about 3 years and I finally took a leap of faith and jumped. My first day was very pain filled but luckily I had some great nurses. Day two was a little better and I walked at least every two hours so the soreness and gas pains really started easing up. That evening my doctor visited me and said he didn't see why I couldn't go home. It was so nice to be able to sleep in a bed that wasn't in a hospital. Day three my soreness was a lot better and now here we are on day 4. I actually have eased up on my pain meds and took a small walk outside down the sidewalk. The fresh air was amazing. I'm still stirring up gas when I drink but I'm hoping that will pass with time.. I also weighed my self on the scale and it said I've already lost 10 pounds!!
  10. Been on a break from the site for a while... had my surgery back on 11-12-13. Sw 257lbs, Reached goal of 150 at 14 months out (January 2015)....got pregnant literally less than a week later. Baby girl is almost 2 now. Since my surgery I have suffered from reflux and its gotten continually worse to the point I feel like my inside are literally on fire. I also have no restriction whatsoever since my pregnancy and have managed to get back up to 185. I had an esophagram done may 5th and my surgeon wants to revise me to RNY sometime this month. They have already submitted to my insurance and I am just waiting for my approval. I am nervous and excited all at the same time. so happy to get relief from the reflux and get back on track

    Current Weight July 18, 2016

I was at 42 BMI and was told if I Dont loose 10%of my overall weight as a sign of good faith and intent I would not be approved. My doc didn't care but insurance would not pay so I lost the weigh and more. I am 2 weeks post op. I can tell you I have lost multi pound a gained it back and then some in the past. This is more permanent if you are dedicated and that's what team wanted to see. I have just been losing these days lol

  14. On the day after surgery and for 2 days after i went into momentary depression thinking what have i done and will it actually help. I got over all that a week later and i'm now heading into my 5 th week post op and i couldnt be happier. Im down 9 kilos and loving the change. I've been lazy with walking ad i've been moving house so i guess i havent lost as much weight as some and also i was on pre op protein diet for less than a week but if you follow the food guidelines and save treats for occassions ypu'll definitely see results. Let us know how you get on.
  15. Pipula, I just wanted you to know that this is the only way, and I mean only way, that I have ever lost anything over 7lbs. I hoped to lose weight; I wanted to... but I too had doubts as it really was the last option for me. I am happy to say, that I lost over that initial 7lbs...lol... and am now up to 74lbs lost - and staying off - in total. Although I am not at my weight goal, I hit my original size goal a couple of months ago... and that is feeling that is just amazing. Make sure you have positive thoughts, even if you hit a stall, focus on the good stuff not the pesky scale and its numbers... honestly, the sleeve is a great tool to get you where you want to be. Good luck =]

Anyone else dying on your post op diet?

tell me Bella, what are you going to attempt on Super bowl sunday?? I will probably be ready for some soft food, chew chew chew.....I love to make chile verde for the game, not sure if I can have that??? I hate the thought to making it and not having a taste! What's on your menu, or anyones elses???? Got banded on the 21st, Doc is requiring only 1 week of mushy then to soft.
  17. I know I am! I am on mushies and have been for 2 weeks or so and I am DYING to chew something! I am a picky eater and I am getting tired of eating the same 5 things over and over again! I am experiencing head hungry like everyone else is too. Man it sucks! I still have 2 weeks on mushies left and I can't wait to eat 'soft' foods! Doesnt help that my husband eats those oh so good foods. Chips and salsa is a favorite of mine and yep he eats it! He tries not to in front of me but sometimes he can hide it. He knows he is dead if he eats a burger or pizza in front of me though! The only 2 things I actually crave latley:drool:.

Anyone else dying on your post op diet?

I, too, was a little scared to be back on "real" food. Scared I would eat like the old days, scared I would throw up, scared something would get stuck, you name it. And I definitely did eat more than I had been on my first day. But like someone else mentioned "in a 'normal' person's way". I had 1/5 of a donut - which is 4/5 (and maybe 9/5) less than I would have before!!! I had some popcorn, but threw away the unbuttery pieces. I left food on my plate and took a doggie bag from a dinner I had to attend. These are not things the old, unbanded, me would have done. One of the most interesting things for me after surgery is the fact that I am not hungry, at all. Even though I still have the "mental" hunger, the fact that I'm not feeling hungry makes it easier to stop at 1/5 of a donut. I was thrilled too, to have lost 13 pounds so fast but I know the weight loss with the band will really only be 1-2 pounds a week and that's ok. Speed would be great and all, but I am after PERMANENT! And if slow, with the occasional setback is my way to permanent, then that's ok too!

When can i eat pureed foods?

that was week 3 post op for me if you attempt to proceed, go slow, chew/eat til mush and make it as smooth/runny as you can to be safe as your insides are still swollen and the stitches are healing and you wanna just not rush the healing..
  20. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm not known for my patience! I was hoping for even a pound or two down just to give me that extra bit of hope. I feel tired all the time and I know my body is lacking in something to keep me alert, but I don't know what to do. I'm taking vitamins, B supplements, calcium and I'm very hydrated. I would think that my body would be content and was to get rid of some more fat, but alas it does not. I guess it's hard to evict a long time resident. I suppose I need to focus on my mid range goal of another 25 pounds by Christmas Day when we leave for a week of skiing and I have to fit into a new pair of ski pants that I bought a size too small. That is my main focus. My old ski pants aren't flattering, the new ones make my ass look good! Now if they'd just fit around my waist. Perspective- keep everything in perspective. I think I'll go out and get a manicure and go shopping today. I'm treating myself for the past two weeks that I have done well. I did lose 11 pounds after all. Better than gaining.
  21. The scale is finally being good to me this morning.. I had gained a few pounds while on vacation 3 weeks ago.. I lost those pounds now I am under what I was when I went to Colorado .. I really am so thrilled to have lost what I gained and then some more.. this is the first time I have ever lost weight after gaining... The band works....Side Note: Please keep my friends @ Sylvandale Guest Ranch in Loveland, Colorado in your prayers.. Their beautiful ranch has been devastated by the floods...

    Surgery today 5/22

Just wanted to share how easy this was today for anyone who might be getting nervous. I had my surgery today at 10 a.m. and I was home by 1 p.m. I've slept most of the day, I think from the pain meds I am taking. I'm taking them even though I don't have pain, just to head it off. I've sipped on Gatorade all day, maybe 1/3 or a bottle. My only complaint is a sore throat and I seem to get the hiccups, probably from sipping incorrectly. Good luck everyone! Oh, and I did a one week pre-op diet. Last week at start of diet I was 212, today I was 204. I am 5'7" w/ a BMI of 31.9 and want to get down to 150.
  23. Hey everyone, I was banded on 6/10/10 and am eating mushies, i eat egg whites with cheese and deli meat with cheese as per a booklet my dr. gave me, my problem is i can eat alot and not really feel full!! i sometimes wonder if they forgot to put the band in!!! i have lost about 13lbs but am at a standstill, i even cheated and ate linguine and sauteed shrimp, i was able to eat the whole bowl, i got so mad at myself but i miss that full feeling, i wonder if this will get better once i get tightened in about two weeks, if you've been in my shoes i could sure use some help or advice, Thanks.
  24. I was banded on 6-7-10 and have been experimenting with the food on the food list. I am finding I can eat any of it with no problem. I am not eating that much and am getting full. The problem is I am not losing at all, even gained 2 pounds. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I must admit I have not completely started an exercise program. I am frustrated, I am eating way less than I used to and way less than anyone else around me and not losing. Hoping I will see a difference soon. I did lose 22 pounds from the two week pre-op and one week post-op liquid diet. I'm still happy I did it!

"The Biggest Loser: The Workout" DVD

Ok so I knew I was ready to up my workout routine so this week I started doing the "The Biggest Loser: The Workout" DVD. On the DVD they have a 6-week workout plan and for the first 3 weeks they have 2 workout routines they want you to alternate through every other day for 6 days a week and then the second 3 weeks you change to the other 2 workout routines again every other day for 6 days a week. The first set alternates between a low impact cardio workout and a body sculpting workout (weight training). The first night I started off with the cardio workout. Boy did I definitely work up a sweat and felt my heart rate go up. I was breathing heavy and really was feeling the exercises. The great part I found about the video is the trainer (Bob) was very much telling the viewer to only go as far as their body would be ready to go. I pushed as hard as I could because I want to make sure I get the best bang for my buck so to speak. The second night was the body sculpting. First off I had no idea what they were going to do and first off they said grab your weights. What???? Weights??? Well I don't have weights so Karen told me to grab a couple of cans of vegis. Hey it worked. So the work out was going great until they had you lay down on the floor for some abs exercises. OMG that was hard. I still did what I could but I tell you what today I am most definitely feeling that workout. But hey that's ok because just like the walking that I started back in mid-October it will get easier as time goes on and I am working for something better. So tonight was the third night and back to the low impact cardio and yes I pushed just as hard as the first night. It feels great to work up and good sweat and know it's not from climbing stairs or short walk across a parking lot. I am still walking 6 days a week also. I know that is still important to get out and do the daily walk as it will help keep my muscles limber for the harder workouts plus it is a great example even at this young of an age for Nicholas to see his mommy and daddy out walking every day for enjoyment and fitness. So now it's going to be interesting to see how well the weight comes off and how quickly my body size changes too. Hopefully the body sculpting exercises will help my body shape come down nicely too. :scared2:
