I was banded on 6/17 and lost a total of 21 lbs from pre op diet to 1 week after surgery. I am 4 weeks post op and have noticed a 2 lb weight gain in the past 2 weeks. Why is this? I gained weight moving from liquid phase to mushie phase. It's Frustrating! When do I really start losing?
-
I've found that in the 4 weeks since I've had my surgery I am obsessing about how much weight I'm losing. I'm losing a decent amount, but I want to make this work so badly I've forgotten about patience. Patience hasn't always been a virtue of mine, but I'm thinking this is something I'm going to have to work on. I didn't get fat overnight. It happened over years and I'm expecting to lose so much in months. Don't ge me wrong, I still think its important for me to have goals. I just need to be realistic. This is not a sprint to the finish line its a life changing marathon, with hills, valleys, and bumps. I'm really appreciating the people on here who are so open and caring to give me good advice and help keep my mind straight and help me realize what's happening with my mind and body is normal. Today, I am going to stop worrying. I will follow my Doctor's instructions and walk through my journey, so hopefully one day soon I will be able to help others.

:frusty: Why, WHY can't they realize that they've lost their notes sometime before three days prior to the exam? I've had FIVE students email me today to ask me to send them the powerpoint presentation I did for one of the chapters. When is the exam? FRIDAY. No wonder the class had a D average on the last exam, if so many wait this long to study. I've warned them over and over again that they need to be studying as we go along, that waiting until immediately before the exam will just get them a very bad grade. Do they listen? Apparently not. This is why giving a failing class grade is very cathartic. I figure, if they try, it's evident in either their scores or in the way they approach the class. Waiting until three days before the exam to attempt to cram 3 very complex chapters of college biology through your skull isn't trying in any sense of the word! :speechles :huytsao

From the album: My Journey
2 weeks after Surgery XMAS 2012 -
I agree with you 100% on the hunger matter. The stomach growling hunger we feel is not in our head. Would anyone say that to a skinny person? No. When I had surgery and had to stay on liquids for two weeks, I was VERY hungry. My nutrtionist said it was "head hunger". Bullshit!. Anyone, even a skinny person would have hunger if they are only drinking one shake a day and having broths and popsicles. I resent being told that everything is in my head. Granted, hunger would be in my head if I consumed a whole pizza and a liter of soda and then I daid I'm still hungry, but when I eat 4-6 oz at a time because I PHYSICALLY cant eat anymore, its safe to say I'm still hungry. The band is full, not me or my stomach. Thats the misperception. I still want ot eat because I'm still hungry, I just cant because it wont go down an gets stuck. Let get that straight. Thanks for letting me vent.

Hey Mia, gosh, we sound like we are in the same boat. I was tiny before having my first child at 18. i was a cheerleader, still have my old uniforms. the skirts fit around my thighs now...lol. how tall are you??? I have to lose 80 lbs or so also, but I am thinking I will be happy at around 60 lbs of loss. I have big hips, and when i was tiny, I always thought my butt was too big, but when I weighed 135-140, I thought my junk was just right! Besides, my goal here is to be Phat, not fat. well, good luck girl! This place is the BEST support system I have found. I have lots of fun on LBT! Another "by the way", I was just banded on 3/13/06....and I have been married 14 years this october, with three kids!!

Hey Laura, Good for you getting that band out! Yep.. most those symptoms will be the same. When I eat a couple teaspoons too much I feel horrid. I measure stuff out, usually 1/2 a suggested portion and work my way up from there. The best thing for me to learn is that if I'm satisfied with a small amount, but still crave more, I can have more later. This past week I was craving spaghetti. I made my favorite sauce and put it over spaghetti squash. I ate a measured portion each night....but I ate it four nights in a row. (until the craving was satisfied). As for Water, right now I can take 3 swallows at a time, if I try for 4 I feel like I can't get it down. Warm liquids go down easier for me these days, maybe because it's bitterly cold up here and I shiver everytime I think of choking down another cold Protein shake!. You're gonna do great....getting back to basics is a good thing..I had to do it after my revision so I understand what you're going through. Best wishes,

Walkers- How far do you walk and at what pace?
RickM replied to bayareanan's topic in Fitness & Exercise
A good pace and distance is whatever you are comfortable doing, and is working your heart some. I don't walk a lot since the immediate post op period, preferring gym and pool work to our boring SoCal neighborhood, but I do walk more when I'm up in Monterey (like next week) since there's more interesting places to walk. They occasionally have nice 5k walk/runs that are fun to do - I just did one about three weeks ago in Pebble Beach. You're working at a good pace and as much time as you can spare for it is great. A suggestion on finding a healthy pace is to get a heart monitor - the cheaper ones (maybe $50) are just built into a watch and you put your fingers across the face when you take a short break. The general guideline is that you should try to work your heartrate to around the 80% of maximum rate for good cardio workout and calorie burning. A rule of thumb max heartrate is 220 - your age. One of the things that sneaks up on you as your weight drops is that the walking becomes easier and it's a bigger challenge to get your heartrate up into that zone by simple walking - it doesn't feel like it's any easier, but your body can sure tell the difference. During the first couple of months post-op I would have no problem getting my heartrate up into the low 130's, which is that good working zone for me, but a couple of months later I could barely break 100 when walking as fast as I could without breaking into a jog (which the knees still don't like) This is one of the reasons that the weightloss slows down as we progress - our daily activities and purposeful exercise burns less calories unless we make a significant effort to ramp it up as the weight comes off. Some people on these forums have reported that their docs don't even consider walking to be exercise after a few months because of this effect. Good luck and keep it up - you're off to a good start. -
My Pants Fell Off Today

Fantastic! Sounds like you have the right spirit to succeed. I am lucky enough to get to go to a belly dance class twice a week... I love it so much! Keep up the good work! -
So how are you planning on dealing with all of the food related temptations of Thanksgiving? I'm planning on being strict about eating the right portion sizes and focusing on protein the same as ever... and letting other stuff (total calories, carbs, etc.) slide. I figure I'm entitled to a little joy for Thanksgiving, but if I eat a light breakfast and lunch and fill my plate mostly with protein, small portions of carb and calorie heavy stuff for one meal won't kill me. I did ask my family to make fewer side dishes than usual this year, so that I won't feel the need to try as many things. And we're going to roll with just one dessert. I don't need four pies and cakes hanging out in the fridge all week taunting me. I'll have a small bit of the one dessert, but no other sweets. What are you planning?

Help!I'm in pain eating fairly soft foods
Humming Bird replied to marfar7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You may be at your sweet spot. After a stuck or throwing up episode you should do liquids for a day. I can not eat eggs. There are many things I can not after I had tight restriction. The choice is up to you. If after another week you are tighter than you can handle, get a very tiny unfill. -
How much are you drinking? I had to measure my water and could only drink 4 ccs at a time every 15 minutes. I did this for about a week and never had any pain. You should probably call your doctor though. Good luck, and hang in there

Ms. Lady - I suffer from migraines as well - many!!! Anywhere from 9 - 12 per month. They have not gotten worse since surgery. When I was on liquids only, when I was eating just a few TB's at a time, I was worried, but I went two weeks without a headache at all!!! I was shocked, that hasn't happened in years! I am certain it was because many of my migraines are triggered by foods. Some I know and many I do not!! I personally HOPE my hunger does not return and I continue to be satisfied with very little!!!! I obsess - WORRY that I will begin to eat more, therefore have to "cut back" to keep from gaining!!! Right now, maintaining is EASY, not to continue to lose is the hardest part!!! LoL

Surgery date!!! Question!!
wstorms replied to hannahj914's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck with your surgery Hannah! I took all of the normals, like everyone has suggested. My NUMBER ONE, SO GLAD I HAD ITEM, was a child's sippy cup. Before surgery I drank a lot of Fluid at one time, and after surgery you have to learn to take small sips. It took one time of forgetting while I was in the hospital that I changed to the sippy cup. I used this for about a week to help me learn to take small sips. I actually found a cup at Walmart in the baby section made by playtex that looked like a small travel coffee mug, not so babyish . This was my lifesaver item. Good luck! -
What wonderful words. I am also on my preop liquids. I was to be on 3 shakes a day and one Protein meal with vegetables for one week, and Liquid Protein and liquids for the 2nd week. I started the liquid only phase several days earlier than what I was supposed to so I could get used to it. They're not bad. Had a decaf coffee shake for bfast (rounded decaf instant coffee 1/2 tsp, unflavored Protein powder, Water, splenda). Just had lunch -chocolate raspberry Protein Shake (1rounded tsp choc sf instant pudding, unflavored protein powder, raspberry extract, water and splenda). I leatned if I use too much sf instant pudfing, it gets very thick. The pistacho sf pudding is great too. Just spit out the pieces of pistacho.

Scared of transition to soft food
Oregon Rose replied to Oregon Rose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for all of the replies. I did talk to Amy - MacMadam's and my dietician. She suggested scrambled eggs, homemade pureed chicken Soup, Danon Light Yoghurt, and Trader Joe's Greek Yoghurt. She said its okay to stay on liquids for a while longer too. Besides not knowing if soft food might get stuck, I am also having diarrhea. (Sorry to mention something unpleasant.) I was partially lactose intolerant before surgery. Amy said this is not uncommon even if you aren't lactose intolerant for the first month after surgery. About half of the stuff I bought has "milk Protein concentrate" in it which is only 80% milk protein. The rest is lactose, fat, and other milk stuff. Oh Boy! "whey protein isolate" is 90% whey protein. In getting to the isolate step they purposely try to remove the lactose and fat. So even though they can't call it lactose free, it has very little. The "whey protein isolate" products would be the Syntrax nectar. Not my favorite, but a couple of flavors are palatable. I prefer not to go to soy protein because soy protein has a nasty taste to me. I guess I will try some yoghurt tonight :001_tt2: since the Lactobacillus have taken care of the lactose for me. I can't complain too much: I've lost 19 pounds in 2 weeks! Best wishes, -
Me too- I had a lot of trouble the first few weeks and now I am at week 8 post-op. I am with you on that we would get a warning signal from our stomachs, I would think. And its not like we can take gulps after gulps- I usually have to wait 5-10 minutes before I can gulp again.

I ate a lot today!
feedyoureye replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds yummy. I make ravioli using wonton wrappers...I make ricotta or some such filling, and seal between two thin wonton skins, boil for about 3 or 4 minutes, sauce up... cheese up... eat up! 2 or three are usually enough. I make several small dishes, and eat the next few days. -
Today I had my main test which was the Endoscopy and the doctor that performed it said everything was normal and good and I’m super excited because I know the mini physical they will do on the 17th of August will be good and since I’m self pay, I was able to avoid all the other test mainly the Endoscopy and my PCP sending approval and labs as all my doctor required, so my date is still September 7th pending the time(AM or PM) however, my doctor don’t give that until about a week before and I’m super excited, I can barely stand the wait.

Amy, So good to hear that! I hope I'm as lucky to have as little pain as you. I am really encouraged. I don't hear many bad stories on here...I mean there are a few...but I'm always positive it won't be me. Did you have good pain meds while still in hospital and after? The only time I had a bad surgery...was when the Doctor wouldn't let me have anything but ibuprofen after my second C-section. butthead dr! Thanks so much for sharing your experience!!!!! I will be watching your ticker fall! Good luck! ((hugs)) Dawn, I too will be in school the week of my surgery. Maybe not as much as you...but have tue thur class and will have surgery on Friday and then night class on Tuesday night. I think we will be OK. Just have to try to take it as easy as possible. I don't know what age you help teach...but just try to take it easy. Try not to get upset at the kids.......Good luck...I have my surgery 4 days after you. ((hugs))

Hi there. I am 2.5 weeks out and today I feel like I am coming down with a cold. Tonight I have been coughing a lot. What cold medicines can I take? My go to's pre surgery were mucinex and day quill/ nyquill. I really don't need this. I just started a new job and have lots of training to go to in the coming weeks. I can't be taking off to go to the doctor!!! I usually never get sick in the summer so I wonder if the sleeve is compromising my health already...boo. I have been good with taking my vitamins...

I read posts here quite often and almost always, without fail, I see the words "I feel like a failure" in a thread. Let's stop this self-destructive behavior RIGHT NOW! Let's band together (no pun intended) and tell whatever friggin demon lives in our heads to go to hell! Despite whatever binging or poor eating habits we may have (and we ALL have them or we wouldn't be here) this thought process just CAN'T be good. I can only imagine that thinking you're a failure causes you to ACT like a failure. If we think it, we make it happen. So, let's choose to change our bad habits, not look back on the bad things we think we've done, and look to to the future! I've made horribly bad choices this past week but I'm CHOOSING not to feel bad about it. I can only re-commit myself and move onward. So how about it?

Depressed! Only lost 8 lbs so far
volleymom posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded June 3, and with the two week pre-op diet, then liquid stage, then soft foods stage - I thought surely I would have lost more than 8 lbs. I know it can be slow going for some of us but I was looking for a little more scale-reward after 4 weeks of "dieting." Does anyone have any advice/reassurance for me? -
I went back to work at 3 weeks post op lifting 250 to 500lb patients so I would say that counts lol. As for exercise I only do my walk away the pound tapes and I started them about 6 weeks post op but I did walk everyday outside for about 60 minutes
