GASTRIC BYPASS REVISE FROM GASTRIC SLEEVE
OzCaz replied to nomorefattypatty's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just had a bypass as a revision from a sleeve. It was done about 6 weeks ago, and the sleeve about 10 years ago. I had terrible reflux basically since the sleeve was done, as well as a hiatus hernia. I have had zero reflux since the bypass was done! It definitely worked for me. -
Anyone have experience with Dr. Chad Carlton - Lone Star Bariatrics in Frisco
KarenLR75 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Some of you may know that in the 11th hour, finally listening to my gut about my original surgeon and his anesthesia team, that I made a switch in doctors. After having gone so far down this road to where I was scheduled for surgery this coming Monday (7/1) with a doctor that had good reviews and a recommendation from someone I respect, I no longer trust myself as much as I did. Dr. Chad Carlton has great reviews as well and they go back for a much longer period of time which is 1 thing I like. However, I am so....well, to be honest I feel quite shaken up about the whole thing even though I feel I did the right thing. Does that even make sense?? While I found that I was relieved initially and my whole family is glad that I changed....my emotions are all over the board since last night. Maybe it's the change of 'I was going to have surgery on 7/1 and now the date is back up in the air..but I'm into week 2 of the liver shrink diet and I was to start bridging to Lovenox (blood thinner) today'...and I know Dr. Carlton was a bit taken aback at the amount I was prescribed. Oh, and switching from sleeve to bypass. Original Dr felt I was too high a risk to do bypass due to clotting history & said we'd do a bypass instead 1-2 yrs down the road (however with Cigna, you only get 1 type of operation for entire LIFE)...original dr said to 'save my pennies'. Dr. Carlton said while yes, my clotting history is a risk (I have a permanent filter) but I come with no other co-morbidities like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. that also introduce 'risk'. He said he has done over 6,000 procedures and does mostly revisions to bypass or straight up bypass (he also is 1 of the few in area that has a lot of experience with gastric bypass with duodenal switch?). I have 150-175 lbs to lose and he said that he did have some sleeve patients that were super diligent and were able to lose that kind of weight with just a sleeve...but I know that for many with this much to lose, a bypass is..what...still the "gold std"?? If anyone has any experience with this doctor, could you please let me know. While his reviews are really good, so were the reviews on my other doctor. I don't want to leave ANYTHING to chance. I'm at that point where it's "trust, but verify".- 1 reply

OK guys maybe I’m just pessimistic (I stress maybe) but am I the only one who has found this surgery to be a complete B*TCH?!

Everyone responds to surgery and pain differently. I had a revision from band to rny and didn’t have any real issues. As far as I recall my pain was well controlled, I had a pump that I could press when I needed to. Even when I had a problem a couple of hours later where my BP went through the floor and I had to be taken back into surgery I wasn’t in pain. Cold, light headed, felt like I was fading but no pain. Waking up after the second op in ICU I still don’t recall being in pain. I just remember thinking I’m alive and being very happy about that. I had the pump things on my legs, a catheter so I didn’t have to get up and a lovely nurse . I did however feel as though I had been hit by a bus in terms of energy etc and felt like that for a good couple of weeks after the op. As for it not being pleasant well that is to be expected, you just got anaesthetised and your body cut up and rearranged, you didn’t spend the day at a spa! Let your nurses know when you are in pain so that they can give you painkillers. All the best , hope you feel heaps better soon -

Will insurance cover a band to sleeve conversion?
RickM replied to CandaceH80's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is another of those "it's anybody's guess" things. There is a different Blue Cross organization for each state, and they will all vary on their coverage details depending upon local market conditions and state laws. Then there is a difference between individual plans, ObamaCare plans and employer provided plans - all of which can vary depending upon what options the employer chooses to buy. Some plans don't cover WLS at all (even if they did in the past) while others limit the benefit to only one WLS per lifetime. Muddying the waters further, if the revision you seek is due to complications of a previously covered surgery, then it is not a WLS procedure but is treating that complication (it sounds like it to me, but it isn't my decision.) There should be policy bulletin for your BC policy online that spells out what applies to your policy - what they cover or exclude as relates to WLS. You can call their number, but don't take their answer as the last word, as the customer service reps have been known to be wrong. When you find a surgeon to handle your case, their insurance coordinator should be able to tell you exactly what your policy covers, as it is their job to know the lingo and understand all of that fine print. I understand that some surgeons are averse to working on other surgeon's patients (fixing others' mistakes...) but that is not an exclusive thing. One of the docs that I associate with (he runs out support group now) does a fair number of RNY to DS conversions, which as he doesn't ordinarily do RNYs, means that he is fixing other's mistakes (as well as fixing wonky sleeves that others have left behind) so they are out there - you just have to look. Thinking about that a bit more, if a surgeon doesn't want to revise other's patients, then he is either making a lot of mistakes himself that need revising, or he isn't very experienced in doing revisions, so you are better off searching for someone else. Good luck,,,, -
June 2019 Surgery Siblings!
FormerUser replied to BulletWithButterflyWings's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yesterday, my surgeon made me promise (multiple times) to weigh myself only once per week at most. She said that plateaus are inevitable, and that weighing myself too often will cause me to get discouraged when there is no reason to. A high percentage of excess weight will come off over the course of the next year, but it won't come off overnight. I have a friend who didn't lose weight for the first several weeks after bypass (and she eventually did lose a bunch of it). It helps me to remember that this journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Weight can plateau for any number of reasons, many of which are entirely out of my control. I just need to focus on the finish line, as hard as that can be. Just hang in there... *hugs* -
Okay since You Asked; HW 365+ October 2017 Height 5ft8 8inches Calculated BMI 55.49 weight at first real visit at OSU Bariatric Spring 2018 still well into mid 300s- they calculated me still well over 50 BMI- I believe,52 I was 72 years at,this time, knew this would be my last best chance at losing to a normal size- knew the diets I had tried gave no real help, tried for years and years, normal diets, weird diets, any diet that came down the pike! All I ever lost was. RESPECT,FOR MYSELF On my surgery day after their guidance and a months of Liver-shrinking diet 319,pounds September 5th 2018 Surgery --RNY,gastric Bypass Surgeon- Bradley J Needleman MD- department Head- Bariatric Medicine- Metabolic We8ght Loss and also a Full Professor in OSU's College of Medicine. These are the cold hard facts And I also heard the nay-sayers and what they said " Bariatrics =Elective Mutilation You will be put on a Selective Starvation Diet, you will be. a Case of Adult Failure To Thrive" 'You are Too Old ! You are too Broken Down! You will Die on The Table! Not Just JOB in the Bible had False Friends. But still I went forward with My Plans - fought an up- hill battle, Many programs don't accept applicants over 60 let alone 72.. But I wanted a chance to continue living, my quality of Life was pretty abysmal, I couldn't breathe, move well because of Arthritis. Even my PCP, supposedly my true friend, told me I wouldn't live past 75, too many things I was at risk for as well as the ones I already had. But I studied my possibilities, learned as much as I could. Bariatrics seemed to be My Last Best Hope- presented my Body to one plan, went their program not once but twice only to be denied. And I won't say the excuse they gave, it was unfounded, error-laden , and it about put me into an emotional tailspin. Then my Red-head stubbornness kicked in- They didn't want ME- fine- I didn't want THEM! So iI applied to the program I had wanted all along, the other someone recomended. Always go with your gut, it knows more than your BrainComprends! And this one, at Ohio State University was truly what I needed, I was treated well, the challenges they gave were d9able and Still are! But enough Back Story. Today, almost 10 months later I have gone from a Size 28- 30W to a loose size 20, quickly going into a 18n never EVER DREAMED I would escape Plus Sizes! My BMI is now 31.1 & I am now below 200 pounds- 198.9 says my Digetal Scale, and yes it does talk to ME. After years of buying cheap models, getting so angry I pitched them in dumpsters or against the wall, I have a good, fairly expensive but accurate model. Has it been easy? Nope- one of the hardest but most satisfying things I have done. And I did not have a textbook recovery- things happened that are fairly rare, but after years of feeling a total screw - up, that I was so pitiful I could never succeed at anything in life, I have found I am a Strong resilent woman, and a good part was the help and consulting of my Bariatric Plan, when I felt like giving up, I knew they believed in ME and so I can believe in ME too. Oh My story is not completed, I am still a Work in Progress. Although originally I am at the point They Forecast, I plan to still do my utmost to make it down to the 15 Junior and 175 I have dreamed of. Right now I weight the same as I did when I married my Late Husband 51 and a half years ago. Oh the body has scars, dings, as the pounds disappeared I am left with loose floppy skin in some places, truth be known I was obese almost from birth, but I am Alive, when I shouldn't be, less arthritis pain, less shortness of breath, look how long- winded I am now , even on paper or the internet! But Baby IT IS WORTH IT! I have drowned my fears in tears, as Martin Luther King once said " I have been to the mountain!" Well I have been tested , found to be true to my commitments, motivated to CONTINUE until I too have my total VICTORY! And if I can do it with the Basal Metabolism Rate of a Sick Sea 🐌 Snail, I think everybody else can also So join me in the journey, our paths may not be the same, few are, but if they parallel let's walk together! On Bariatric Pal you never need to feel ALONE, we are world🌎wide, we can talk the talk because we too have walked the walk- we offer support, we offer friendship, if you, too, feel you've got what it takes- join in! It has been so worth it for ME!😝🍀And today I feel lucky to relate all this!

Everything makes me queasy!
catwoman7 replied to jeromysgrl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
is this all the time or mostly after you eat? Are you a bypass or a sleeve patient? If all the time, things should get better fairly soon. I remember the first few weeks were kind of tough. Remember to eat slowly and if your stomach doesn't seem ready to move on to the next phase, then don't....take your time. If you are a bypass patient and it's mostly after you eat, there's a chance you could be developing a stricture. If slowing down doesn't help, keep your surgeon updated. If it's a possible stricture, they'll do an upper endoscopy and stretch it out if they find it (easy, painless "fix" that'll make you feel better right away, if that's what it is). You are in the right time frame for that - they almost always occur during the first three months post-surgery. I had one at four weeks and another at eight weeks. If you're a sleeve patient, though, this is probably NOT what it is. From what I understand, sleeve patients can get them, but they're VERY rare in sleevers (they happen to about 5% of bypassers) -
Questions about help needed after WLS
elcee replied to KarenLR75's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would be surprised if they only keep you in 1 night after a DS, it’s pretty major surgery. Here in Aus it is standard practice to keep bypass patients 3 or 4 nights. Why have you decided to go full DS straight away? It’s not a very common choice. Most people either do the sleeve and if that doesn’t work go the next step and have the DS or they have an RNY -

What a freaking idiot. He doesn't have to do gastric bypass to treat your symptoms and maybe consult with your surgical group. I just hope that you aren't losing blood...that would cause the weakness and stomach pains...the CT scan will see it if it's there and the labs will show the your blood volume. Prayers my friend -
Any August 2019 people out there?
deletedprofile123 replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That makes sense and I'm sorry I did not initially see your height — was on my phone. Very glad to hear that all of your previous conditions have now disappeared! That's amazing! 😍 I'm hoping to no longer have GERD by revising from the VSG to the RNY too... Bypass is definitely the only option when acid reflux/GERD is present... Glad your surgeon was honest with you about that... God bless you for donating your kidney! You're going to be in much better health very soon, and can take on anything! 😉 -

vovo2013 replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Curious as to why surgery is an option at 156 lbs... Is it to resolve the gastroparesis? And is bypass the only option because of GERD? Yes, it is to resolved the GERD, EOE, Gastroenteritis and Fatty Liver issues that I have. Yes, my GI doctor and Baratric Surgeon both agree that I can ONLY do Bypass. The other reason why is I am doing this is because I am going to be donating my kidney as well. -
ISO reasonable cash pay revision
loser2014 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had lap band surgery in 2014 with moderate success. It got me down from 265 to 220 in six months. My weight stayed stable for about 4 years until I had to have the fluid let out due to being unable to swallow anything. Since then my weight has been slowly creeping cack up again. My insurance does does not cover Bariatric surgery. I paid $10k for the band and will have to self pay to revise. I am trying to find someone who has had good experience with a reasonably priced doctor that performed a band to VSG revision. I am in the Midwest and would prefer to stay in the US but will travel. Thank you. -
Questions about help needed after WLS
KarenLR75 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well, up until noon today, I was scheduled to get a VSG on 7/1 (this coming Monday). Now that I finally listened to my gut instincts telling me I am not confident in my choice of surgeon and am DEFINITELY not comfortable in the anesthesia group he contracts with (they have very poor reviews), I met with another highly recommended dr late today. He said he does not consider me a poor risk for a bypass with a duodenal switch. He stayed after office hrs to meet with me. We are going to talk tomorrow after I've had time to digest the fact that times/dates/etc. may all be changing and try to make the final decisions that will be best for my positive outcome. That being said, my husband has been asking what care/support would I require after I get home from the hospital. This has stumped me as after major hospitalizations even though I've had ppl around a day or 2, I'm used to being the caregiver (ALWAYS) and am used to caring for self. I haven't paid attention nor has my 'old dr' ever said much about post-op except don't lift more than 20 lbs and the post-op diet. I also haven't asked so I don't fault either doctor for that (for the record, my first doctor has good reviews too, it is not about him personally, not the main reasons why I'm changing). I have supplies laid in and probably like most ppl have said, within 1 to 2 weeks, I'll be sick of most of them. Do I truly "need" someone physically present to help me with things? Or maybe I should ask, what would you have liked to have someone help you with in the first few days after being discharged from the hospital (whether errands, being in the house, med runs, um..I would say making food...but yeah...um..bringing me my 'liquid of choice'...lol).? Guess I need to now look up info bypass with duodenal switch. I've been thrown quite a curve here as I've focused mostly on 'sleeve' for the past several months. The only though that comes to mind is silly....but it's "I'm going to lose my hair for sure, aren't I?" -

Hello Everyone-- This is my story!!!! I was 398 lbs and had gastric bypass RNY on 11/30/2009. I lost 200lbs. I had a baby in March 2017 and gained weight with the pregnancy and have been struggling to return to my pre-pregnancy weight of 213. My surgeon will reduce my pouch (stretched 3 times it's the surgical size) and reduce my stoma (also stretched). My surgery is on July 15th. I am doing a 3-week liquid diet to get ready. -
