What to look for in a good surgeon?
flowers replied to caeleb's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
There was a thread what to look for in a Mexican surgeon that has many of the basics. Same would apply to any surgeon. I agree, first how many lapbands have they done. Not how many weight loss surgeries, but specificially lap bands. When I went to a seminar they had stats on that they had never had a death, that they had taken steps to cut down on resulting gas and post surgery minor complications. How many incisions will you have. I saw on FOX news that they now have 150 surgeons in the US who will do surgeries thru your mouth, that overweight people recover much faster if they dont have incisions. In addition to lapband, they can do gastric bypass and even gall bladder remover completely through the mouth. One gal posted she had this, but they did one small incision for the camera. Which type of lapband do you want put in. I had my choice. The newer one I was afraid would be harder to get fills for so got the one that had been around longer. Hard to say which is the best choice. I cant remember all the criteria I looked at but these are some of them. -
Dr. St. laurent cypress tx?

I had the band done 5 years ago and lost 80 lbs. In the beginning I always wanted for him to add fills and he wouldn't till I mastered it.I admire this. He takes the time to see you. I have been having problems the last year and I am getting the revision surgery to the sleeve on June 16.I found out he trained some other top band sleeve surgeons. -
Hi there! I'm scheduled for a revision from Lap-Band to gastric bypass on May 19. I have had my band for 5.5 years and have just had too much trouble with it almost the entire time but worse for the last two years, and I'm looking forward to having it out. I initially wanted nothing to do with bypass and thought the band would be my perfect tool but of course didn't anticipate all the negative effects. It took me a while to decide to revise and now it can't come quick enough!! I am most nervous about my port coming out as I've read that it can be quite painful, and it's been sitting in there getting all encapsulated for more than five years, whereas it seems like the majority of revisions are only two-year-old bands. My biggest hurdle will be my Protein shakes. I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners too well and don't really like whey protein, so I've been researching alternatives. I have an egg-white Protein powder and a vegan powder ready to go, which both are highly rated by consumers. I tried a sample egg-white powder and it was far better to me than whey. They are both sweetened with stevia, also better for me personally. I am also planning on purchasing unjury chicken Soup, which is whey but (apparently) better hidden with the savory flavor. Most of my prep is done and I'm just waiting. PS, I'm not too patient!!

Comparing this to post-op Lap Band

My experience after revision was much much better than when I had lapband....but that could be because I was so happy to have the damn band out of my body! -
Third times a charm, surgery in 6 days, need a mentor
India928 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So in short, my story is: Lap band in 2005; gastric sleeve in 2008 and LAST surgery, Bypass scheduled for 9/14/15. Been pretty tough on myself because of the past but still forging forward. Life is short, I don't want to have regrets with anything - so here's to finally working at it. would love a mentor. thank you -
I have been completing my requirements prior to surgery since the end of August, which includes 6 monthly visits of medically supervised weight loss with my surgeon's nurse/bariatric coordinator. My last visit with her is at the beginning of March. After that, assuming all of my other requirements have been met they will put in for approval (which is expected very fast with my particular insurance). I have done a lot of research since even before August about what surgery was right for me and I was convinced it was the sleeve. Liz (the bariatric coordinator) was very honest with me yesterday and said she thought I might not have very good success with the sleeve because I have been struggling to lose weight and definitely have a fondness for sweets. She also said that when she attends the surgeon's office's monthly support group sessions she is kind of jealous that the patients who had RNY seem to have a much greater degree of "control" in their eating. I can certainly use more control in my eating! So now I am seriously questioning my decision and and starting to re-think my plan. I need to decide before 1/31, as I have my appointment with the dietician who will give me a binder full of info and the info varies a bit depending on the type of surgery I choose. I realize that RNY has been around much longer than the sleeve and that the sleeve was originally intended to just be the first step in duodenal switch surgeries for 500+ lb. patients. However, the re-routing of the intestine freaks me out quite a bit and I am afraid of nutritional deficiencies caused by the malabsorptive aspect of the RNY surgery. I'm thinking I should just go with my "gut" and get sleeved, but just wondered if anyone here regretted getting the VSG and wished they had gotten a bypass instead. Any comments would be appreciated!

Bariatric coordinator thinks RNY would be better for me. What to do?!
TheOldMeAgain replied to Scylla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My sister had the bypass. She does get dumping but it doesn't stop her from eating sweets. I guess the same way WLS won't help anyone long term if your not committed to a Lifestyle Change. You'll just find ways around it by ignoring the bad side effects of eating sugary and greasy foods. No matter what I say to my sister about how she shouldn't be eating certain things she tell me to mind my business. Please don't let that be your only reason for wanting RNY. There always a way around things. -
Dad is thinking of getting sleeved, any advice I should give him
Pinkgirl1234 replied to pickle25's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Make sure dad goes to the most experienced surgeon. He needs to talk to his dr.Do the research and get it done.I had revision to bypass and I am so happy. -
Hi Jill, Have you done anything about the surgery yet? Dr. Forbes is leaving the practice and moving to NC. So Posner and Hoffman who are excellent and have wonderful stats are becoming overwhelmed with new patients. Even if you are still on the fence I would consider looking into filling an application. It is a lengthy procedure involving Psych evaluation and diet before you are accepted so you have time to back out. My surgery is October 13th. I do not need to loose a lot of weight (maybe 60 lbs) but I am doing it to be healthier and "cure" my diabetes, stomach problems, high BP, etc. Besides being down to only two doctors the band is really becoming popular and is much safer than Gastric Bypass Surgery. If you put in an application you will be invited to a seminar where they explain everything about both surgerys including mortality rates. I believe Sisters hospital has a program also and there is one in Buffalo called Synergy Bariatics. Good Luck.

Dad is thinking of getting sleeved, any advice I should give him
pickle25 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was sleeved 19/10/15 and I've bee absolutely dropping the weight with some pretty troubling side effects, but mostly doing ok. My dad is now made up that he's finally going to bite the bullet and also be sleeved. We've talked about it a fair bit and he's been put off by issues I've had. I've stuck on the path of this has really changed my life in so many ways and I don't regret it at all, although there's been negatives it's better than dying of a heart attack, and that it gives me the restriction I need to succeed. Dad hasn't been well. He's 170+ kgs and has had a few heart attacks. I'm not sure he'll make 60. He has lost up to 20kgs before on his own and is happy to exercise, but finds food restriction the hardest. We are both terrible coke drinkers. And fast food addicts. My surgeon operates locally but is mainly at another hospital 50 mins away. I went to him because originally I was considering bypass and the local one didn't do bypass. Do you think it's better to stick to someone we know or try another person? I didn't like that he wasn't contactable when I had a problem with my sutures, another thing that put dad off. Also I'm young, Dad isn't. For me it's been about getting to enjoy my life before it passes me by and to be healthy for my daughter. Dad doesn't mind being fat. He does love food though. Any over 45's have anything to offer? Any help I can get would be appreciated. I don't want to loose my Dad, and Idont want him to be scared. -
Do what it right for you. You have to live with the decision. My surgeon makes it the patients decision. That being said I feel the sleeve is the best approach. You can always get the bypass later. There are less side effects with the sleeve choose carefully.

Oh cowgirlJane, any advice for me. I'd like to be just as successful as you. The reason I wanted the gastric is because after reading about others experience post revision , I didn't think one could lose all if the weight. But you've inspired me. Can you give me the date in which you has the revision , how long it took. Etc. thank you

Former Lapband Patient
Threetimesacharm replied to jen120's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
your story is similar to mine in that I have a lapband and was very active at LBT UNTIL I decided to have a revision to the sleeve; my surgery is in three days. The sleeve is permanent and the lapband is not. I am now glad to be getting a permanent surgery for my weight loss journey. Best of luck to you and keep posting!! -
I'd get VERY small fills and go very slow with any kind of change. If you keep having trouble you might consider revision to another band or the sleeve.

Know a Dr. or hospital in Lehigh Valley, PA?
mom22 replied to LinzerPA's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Yes - Dr.Holland - I've been to two of their seminars. He seems to be very, very personable and has a great team of women working with his clinic. I believe he only does gastric bypass - not any lap banding. If I were to have gastric bypass - I'd definitely go with him. I've decided on the band - I'm going with Dr. Boorse out of Lehigh Valley Hospital. I'm currently in the long-drawn out 6-month program - information is great, but why does it have to take 6 months??? Wish you luck... -
Dr david kim, colleyville, tx
dbrar88 replied to MissPrissBecky's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Dr. Kim performed my revision this past Monday (9/27). The only true pain I had that bothered me was where my port was. Other than being nauseous, no other issues. The Gastrograffin they make you drink tasted like Lemon Pine Sol. It was not so good!! Thank goodness I took my barf bag with me, because it came up immediately. But, they got to see that I had no leaks, but had lots of reflux and swelling. They ordered some stat meds and within 30 minutes of receiving them, I felt much better. It was hard to drink and get in enough the first day, but it is getting easier and easier. I stayed an extra night (two nights) total just because of my occasional nauseau and plus I live 5 hours away. They had no problem with that whatsoever!! Besides Dr. Kim coming to check on me the following day, I had 3 other docs/pa's checking in on my all throughout each day. I was very impressed with that (especially since I work in a hospital and most docs only make it once every 24 hours). They want you up and walking the hallway at least every two hours. I escaped by getting a wheel chair ride to radiology due to my nausea. But, like I said, after I got the magic cocktail and felt good, I was up and walking with no problem. Andrea was my night nurse and she is FANTASTIC!!! From my weigh in they took right before surgery until I got out, I seven pounds. It has to all be from fluids as there was no food consumption whatsoever! So, don't expect to lose while you are in the hospital!! I have doubled my intake today over what I consumed yesterday. Cold, cold Water is my best friend and taste awesome right now. I am also consuming the Optifast shakes. I could only get one in yesterday over about a 2 1/2 hour period, but today has been at maximum an hour....I am on my 3rd shake now. I haven't had any pain meds since leaving the hospital. Just soreness which is felt only when you try to get up or twist the wrong way. Yes, I would highly recommend Dr. Kim. I believe he did a total of about 6 surgeries on my day. I got moved up before one patient because she just mentioned she had some syncopal episodes in the past 8 months.....so they wanted clearance from her cardiologist before moving on with the surgery. I was impressed with their cautiousness. I truly feel I could do about 60% of my normal routine right now, but am taking it slow. You will be impressed with Dr. Kim and the hospital staff. No regrets on my part!! Good luck!!!! -
Anyone used a Dr. in The Woodlands, Texas area??
jam265 replied to Lynne731's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
My friend used Dr. Spivak for gastric bypass, and if I hadn't found Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver, I would have used him, too. -
Dr. Castaneda performed my gastric bypass surgery in December, 2010. Even pre-operatively I was amazed that Dr. Castaneda was always available by email and promplty answered all of my questions. Once I arrived in Mexico Dr. Castaneda continued to be available for any questions before and after surgery. I was nervous about having surgery in another country, but by the time my surgery day arrived, I felt extremely confident with Dr. Castaneda's surgical competence. I had no surgical complications and continued to heal well once arriving back home. As an RN, I was very reassured by the process Dr. Castandea used both during surgery and post-op to ensure there were no surgical complications or leaks in the surgical incisions. The two aspects of my surgery that were necessary, but less pleasant, were the surgical drains required to be in your abdomen for about 4 to 5 days post-op and the contrast dye I needed to drink one day post-op to check for any leaks in my surgical incisions by x-ray. The hospital and staff were very attentive and caring. Some of the nurses and other hospital staff did not speak fluent English but they were always patient while we figured out what it was that I needed. I can not end this story without saying how caring and truly engaged Dr. Castaneda is in ensuring a positive outcome for obese patients. Even though I am more than 4 months post-op I can still email anytime and receive a prompt response and enquires about how I am doing. I would recommend Dr. Castaneda to family, friends or anyone contemplating weight loss surgery.

Dr. Michael Snyder - Great Surgeon!
DeeDee40 replied to bearbandit's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Well hello everyone. Buttercup, I had alot of questions about the surgery too before hand. Since the surgery (which has been 3 weeks now) Yeah!!! I would be lying if I say the first week was rough for me after surgery. If you look at my posts you will see I ended up with extreme pains due to air left in band after surgery. But honestly, The 5th day when i could not take it anymore, I called the office and they fit me right in.! I just want you to know that when dr. snyder and his staff say they are there for you before and after surgery THEY ARE. I have had to call Dr. snyder on the saturday after surgery and he answered and helped me through the nausea with sending a prescription within 10 minutes. I personally think that means alot for your surgeon to take that much time and care for his patients. That was one of the things that attracted me to dr snyder. I was orginally scheduled to have lapband with another doctor and could never get a call back. So that was it for me. If they couldnt get it together before my case then what would happen if something went wrong. So definitely research your surgeon. I have looked on this site and others and that doctor has a bad followup care. After saying all that Dr. snyder was everything that I was looking for and I never went back to the other office. I knew 2 people that had surgery with Dr. Snyder one was a bypass and one lapband. It has been a huge difference in my life. The lapband is wonderful! I have only had it 3 weeks but I love it so far. Surgery was good. I was proably in pain for like a complete week. I still have pains in my shoulder but its bearable. I am back to work. Although I am on a weight restriction as far as work. But you ask would I do this again? As of right now DEFINITELY!!!!! I feel my life coming back 100%. I feel better all the way around. Since sugery I have lost 15 pounds. i know its not tons of weight but its 15pounds less than 3 weeks ago.! If you have any questions or you want to pm me. I'm always here. Good luck to you, you will do great!!!! -
GO WITH VSG. I'm a college student, so I'm all about convenience, and the lap band fills/unfills/underfills/overfills have been HORRIBLE. I actually just called my doctor yesterday and I'm going to get a revision to the VSG. With the lap band, I was doing well in the beginning, but 6 months out, I started gaining weight again. I have PCOS, and that's what happens with PCOS, but after WLS it shouldn't happen at all. I eat correctly and exercise - I'm doing p90x right now - and since the band doesn't allow me to eat some things, I'm not getting enough nutrition because I can't get a lot of food THROUGH the band, my body is rebelling and I'm gaining weight again. Please save yourself the trouble and money and go with the VSG.

Hi I Am A Newbe Here. I Need Some Friends
Lauralou replied to beckyjorm's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm Laura and I had my RnY revision surgery August 6, 2010. From that date until last year when I left my husband, I had lost a total of 140lbs. BUT, I. The last year I have gained 31 lbs, have totally disregarded my post op diet and am totally disgusted with myself. I want to get back on track, but I am lacking the proverbial "kick in the ass"!! Lol. I live near Cornwall ON Canada. Maybe we could be support for each other? -
Finally, I've been approved for my bypass. I was suppose to have the surgery on April 19, but I was out of town on family matters. So it was changed to June 14. I'm so excited but I'm kinda scared. Any last thing I need to know what to do before this surgery. I would appreciate it

Hi-clearly I'm on this site...so I have a bias towards the sleeve and you should take that into account. Like Tiff--I am a band to sleeve revision. I had many problems with overfills/underfills....and such bad acid reflux it effected my vocal chords. I am only 2 months out from my revision surgery....I've lost 38 pounds since my surgery date and feel 1000 times better with my band removed. I travel on business and eat out 4-5 times a week...with my band...I had so many times in the 3 years it was in where I had to run to bathroom to throw up because something was stuck or I would start sliming. I gurgled from my throat to the point others could hear it... One other thing...be SURE if you have the band that your doctor will do your fills. I had my surgery done in Mexico and had a dr in NYC who would do my fills...but when I moved to Philly for a new job...not a single Dr. in Philly would do a fill on a band they didn't insert...how's that for a bad surprise... Whatever you decide to do...band or sleeve....I wish you a happy, healthy...safe experience. Grace
