Got into a little trouble today..
Can.sleeved replied to girldep's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Could you tell what the lecture would involve about the food and leaks? I was three weeks out on the 6th and I am eating pretty well everything (in small amounts) but NO beef. I have not had any problems but could I still get a leak? Russ -

I want to succeed at this...
☠carolinagirl☠ replied to PrettyThick1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is hard to really make someone who hasn’t been there yet believe that is does get better. Most people get to the first few days, think it is too hard and therefore they are doing it wrong and just give up. Well, it IS hard. Sorry, I know that is not the answer you want, but it is the truth. You just have to remind yourself that the habits you are trying to break are ones that you have had for years – do you really expect to break them overnight and for it to be a piece of pecan pie? I can tell you though that it is so, so worth it. Once you get past those first few weeks and you are feeling amazing and loving the changes your body is going through, you will look back and thank yourself for pushing forward. You just need to start. Set small and realistic goals and make one change at a time. The main reason you should be doing this is for yourself and for your health. There are going to be negative people no matter what you do. Well sadly you can’t stop them having that opinion, but who cares what anyone thinks. -
Oh no...banded March 22 and I am pregnant.
Stacey5267 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just found out that I am pregnant with my third child. I was banded 3 months ago on March 22. This is a big surprise to me as we were not trying. I have been filled to 5 cc and have lost about 20 pounds since surgery. So far, I feel very little restriction so I am not worried about being able to eat enough, but just about carrying a baby to term with a band in me and so soon after surgery. Does anyone else have any experience with this? I have a follow up to see my doctor on July 1 and will discuss it with him then. Not sure what to expect? Thanks for your time. Stacey -

February 18th surgery!
Tracytma replied to amandastearns's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations! I know exactly how you feel!! My date is 19th!! I had been researching this and wanting it for 5 years! Now that I have my date, I'm panicking!! I'm not afraid of the surgery, as I had a previous lap band. I know what I'm getting into. I'm worried about failing! It's a confidence thing, ya know? But each time I watch a youtube video, or read a story, I think, YES!!! I can DO this!! Crazy, right? I'm on a liver reducing diet. Day 3. pretty slim pickings. It's really good to do a liver reducing diet, as they have to push your liver out of the way to do the surgery. Just stick to your reducing diet. Cut out as much fat and sugar as possible and limit your carbs. I get to have 3 fruits a day, unlimited salad and veg. Only 2 oz Protein at lunch and dinner. You'll do great! If you're on facebook, let me know, I have started a private page! keep in touch!! Tracy -
Possible Dumb Question
shellyd88 replied to MOMMY2MGM's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I want to know what I'm doing wrong I'm five months post op two weeks ago I drank a 12 oz protein shake in about 20 mins it hurt like hell and in short order came right back up was first time since surgery I had ever thrown up I was trying to finish it before it got warm and yucky I won't do that again anytime soon -
I'm not sure what I weigh now...Weighed in at my surgeon's office at 212 on Halloween, and won't weigh in again til my next visit later this month. Was so worried about stalls, I figured I'd just save myself the stress, do what I need to do, then be pleasantly surprised (I hope) at my next visit.

Hi, My surgery date is 9/16. I have been on the Pre-op Diet for 10 days. My surgeon requires 2-3 Protein drink per day with 2 high protein meals. I usually start my day with a shake on the way to work. Then at lunch eat a salad with some type of lean meat - and FF dressing. Then about 3:00 p.m. or so I have another Protein Drink. For dinner, I usually eat something grilled - like fish or chicken with a veggie (squash, green Beans, brocolli). Any veggie that is low in carbs. Portion control is important. Stick to whatever 1 serving size is. I have another shake later in the evening if I get hungry. I am using the EAS Advant drinks. You can get them in the grocery stores. They were approved by my surgeon. Eat Slow and chew well at mealtime. That will help get you ready for later in the post op diet. Every surgeon has different requirements. This Pre-op diet is not as restrictive as some. Good Luck, and I hope this helps.

I just had the vertical sleeve surgery this past Wednesday, 5 days out, and I have had diarrhea for the last 3 days. I know this is normal since all I'm taking in is liquids but is there something I can take or something that let's up this pain? Also, does anyone else experience random pain, almost like hunger pains, that start at the front of their stomach all the way to the back and through their throat? It almost feels like really bad heartburn or something but I know it's not that. Thanks!

Open and leaking incision concerns
taz replied to Carla K's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Carla K. I have had quite a bit of trouble with this. Not just where my port is. I had my gallbladder out Jan 8th. I had lapband surgery Feb 8th. It seemed I had trouble with all my incisions. I tried to wear a bra 3 weeks after gallbladder surgery. This really irritated two of my puncture wounds. Then I tried using Neosporin on them and bandaids. Wrong. They wouldn't heal because they stayed moist. My doc was not pleased. He said they had to breath to dry up. However, when I woke from being banded I had thick layers of gauze over one wound. I guess he didn't think it neede to breath all the time. Anyway, after having to wash the blood out of my gowns constantly for the last two months this is what I found helpful. When showering I wash my tummy with Soft Soap using my hand. For me Neosporin has been helpful. I just put a thin layer over my wounds. If I need to have them covered because of needing to wear clothes and such silly things, I use a thick layer of gauze taped on with the tape that is used for that. I still have oozing 2 months out but not so much from infections. It has been an interesting road. Good luck with this. I appreciate it that this can be very frustrating. -
So i started my liquid diet today! Seems so much harder! IDK why but i feel im craving everything.. Does it get easier after a couple days or a week? Excited for surgery on the 19th of September! seems like ive been waiting forever for this

Started my liquid pre-op diet!
summertymer replied to vanessa112's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am on day 3 of my all liquid pre op diet. I craved EVERYTHING the first two days, but today it hasn't been as bad. I am hoping it gets easier. My surgery is on Sept 12th. I have heard that this pre op diet is much harder than the post op. We just need to take it day by day. -
I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks pre op.. optifast 4 small juice boxes of it a day and a optifast bar. I was really worried about it because I was afraid I would be hungry and fail.. But I wasn't hungry on it.. it was fine. I did get a little hungry the second week and called the nutritionist and she allowed salad with balsamic vinegar and 3oz of tuna a day that really helped. It was not as bad as I had worried. I just kept thinking I wanted this surgery to save my life! I could do two weeks of dieting so I wouldn't have to diet for the rest of my life! It is amazing how great I feel and you will look back and realize how easy it was. You can do it. Just remember you can do anything to be there for your kids. You will be adding years to your life by losing weight and this was my inspiration. Good luck and God bless!

The gas pain is from gas trapped around your diaphragm that sends pain signals. From what I understand, GasX doesn't help that kind of gas. The best thing to do is walk around. It can take up to a week for the gas to dissipate.

Mexico sleevers and passports
TheNEWME! replied to lwilliams65's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I chose to get the passport card vs the book. The card gets you across boarders by land OR sea. A book is definitely needed when flying into other countries. The card was cheaper and got to my home pretty fast... less than 3 weeks. -
Ooh wow - haven't experienced anything like that but I'm still early in the game I still have 3 weeks of the liquid diet!!! I am happy to know that I'm not going crazy about my tongue - what stage are you at?

The hair loss is something you can't really prevent. It occurs due to a process called telogen effluvium. Bariatric surgery shocks our systems, resulting in temporary trauma to the hair follicles. Basically, the hair follicles go dormant for a while and the hair sheds. The hair shedding due to telogen effluvium usually starts at 3 to 4 months post-op and stops before the 1-year mark. Some swear that biotin supplementation and Progaine shampoo works. However, the only proven treatment is time and healing.

Practicing for pre-op
makemyownluck replied to SpaceDust's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck! I did all of that prep work too. I'm glad I did, but I officially start my pre-op diet tomorrow and I'm SO SICK of these dang shakes already!! But it's still good practice for post-op livin. I can't believe I'm 2 weeks away... eeek! -
I've started two things - one, I'm taste-testing samples from a number of the Protein powders and Meal Replacements out there. Second, since I'm doing that, I'm pseudo practicing for the pre-op diet. Hey, if I'm drinking the Protein drinks anyhow, I might as well make it useful! What does that mean, exactly? The diet is to use 3-4 Protein shakes during the day, plus one small meal for dinner. Total is not to exceed 870 calories, so while I can use skim milk to mix my drinks, it wouldn't leave a lot for dinner! I'll likely choose the protein powders I can tolerate well mixed with Water, and try to be satisfied with 3 of those during the day, so that I can have around 300-350 calories for dinner, since I'll be looking for dense protein to keep me satisfied overnight. I can, of course, have all the non-caloric liquids I would like during this diet. What I am doing (as of today) is replacing Breakfast and lunch with 2-3 protein shakes during the day. At dinner time, I am not eating with the restricted calories I will be during the diet, but I am trying to keep my portion size to something equivalent to what I will eat in the pre-op diet and focusing as much as possible on protein. I am trying to keep the total day between 1000 and 1200 calories, but I'm not being obsessive about it. The reality is that if I'm only getting 3-500 calories during the day, that leaves me 700-900 for dinner - that's a pretty big amount of room. I've told myself that if I am positively starving during the afternoon, I will allow myself one more Protein shake, but I'm trying to work with just 3 shakes and lots and lots of water or tea during the day. Other than including a Protein Drink for breakfast so that I *do* have breakfast, I am not focused on dieting on the weekends, just trying to be mindful of what I am eating and keep carbs and calories in check. What I'm expecting from this is three things. One, of course, is that I will spend the next few weeks trying out a lot of protein drinks and maybe some preparation methods. Two, I will get these reviews onto my blog (http://livebytes.net/blog/spacedust/ for anyone who's interested) to try and give others some ideas of nutritional values and what I thought of the stuff as I give it a try. Third, I suspect that it won't hurt in the usual battle to lose a few pounds, and certainly won't hurt for me to get used to what it's like from the perspective of if I get uncomfortably hungry or not. Wish me luck!

Try not to get yourself all psyched out about pain and gas. I had 0 gas pains, and the physical pain just felt like I did a hundred stomach crunches. I did have some nausea but it was from the pain pump I was on, once they switched me to percocet pills, no more nausea. I was super anxious leading up to surgery, it was over quickly, and now 5 weeks out on to this new journey. Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

lea3277, you are still so early in your journey that I wouldn't worry about it telling you that you need more calories. I know at about 2 weeks post surgery I was only at around 700 myself. If you are still in the mushie stage, it's hard to get enough calories. It'll get easier as you transition to solid foods. Best of luck on your journey!!
