Hi Revision buddies! Just a bit of backstory: I had a lapband placed back in fall of 2007, so almost 12 years ago. Unfortunately, I have always struggled with my band when it had fluid in it (vomited frequently, inability to eat most proteins, GERD, could not drink anything that wasn't warm or at minimum room temperature.) My band and I officially "broke up" in 2015. All of the difficulties I had been struggling with had gotten so bad that I had developed acute gastritis, and esophageal spasms due to the GERD and persistent vomiting, which resulted in me having to have all of the fluid removed. While the vomiting every time I ate and esophageal spams stopped, the GERD remained and the last 60 pounds I had managed to keep off after my initial loss, rapidly returned. So here we are in 2019, through an unfortunate incident my husband had earlier in the year, our deductible and out of pocket maximum have been met for the year. The window of opportunity for me to finally end 12 years of GERD and struggle with this band is finally open. I found a surgeon I really am confident in and have had an EGD to check for Barret's and see what kind of shape my stomach was in. I was lucky in that my hernia had not returned and I didn't have any ulcers, but he did notice that even with no fluid in my band, that it seems tight, I'm not really sure what that means, but it would explain why I still struggle with most proteins. At my last appointment, we reviewed my EGD and he was sending the letter to the insurance company. Because my revision would be due to band complications, my insurance doesn't require the 6 months of dieting, psyh visit, etc, just a letter from the surgeon showing medical necessity for the revision. Since I have a history of GERD, we have decided that RnY is the best option. The paperwork was probably sent in sometime after July 3rd, my appointment was late afternoon on the 2nd and I can't imagine that they would be able to get the letter done and submitted the same day. And now I wait. UGH! It's the worst. I don't have any idea how long it should take. I've read the boards and for some people, it's taken as little as a single day for approval. and some waited for weeks only to be denied. It's maddening!! Thanks for the vent! TX2NC

Scheduled for Sleeve but thinking about Bypass instead?
MeowAMR replied to MeowAMR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I spoke with him and he said that since i don't have it frequently and its a good sign that my reflux went away after pregnancy. He looked at my upper GI and it said no reflux was indicated during the procedure so he thinks the sleeve would be the best option for me. That when I lose weight it will also relieve more pressure off my stomach and its even lesser percentage that i would develop it. So I'm gonna stick with the sleeve and like he said if it gets bad we can always do the bypass. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app -
HELP! Still canβt eat and constantly nauseous

Thanks Darktowerdream, that gives me too a ray of hope, that there are others who were a year out before things settled down. I literally am sick and tired of being so sick and tiredm I saw on another thread, our Founder Alex Brecher had to have his mini- bypass, which he had for maybe 4 months, had gone there from a lap- band that wasn't working and affecting his quality of life, and now he had a bowel obstruction et all, so he is rejoined back up close to what he was before any surgeries. That's not done all that often, usually open surgery, and it takes a very very skilled surgeon. That's why so few even attempt it, but it was a Life Emergency for Alex so IT HAD TO BE DONE and we only can pray all the things he has learned over the years will stand him in good stead so that he won't regain back to where he was before any surgeries at all. I really don't think I would want a total reversal, I am lucky I made it through my RNY, many people my age either stroke out or have a cardiac event and don't leave there ALIVE. I just want what I have to work better, I need efficiency at this POINT not euphemisms and being told " Bye and Bye, it will get better!" I have devoted more than a Whole Pregnancy time to this endeavor, knew I wouldn't receive a cuddly baby but I expected at the very least---------- SATISFACTION! -
I had my Gastric Bypass reversed π

May I ask what about the bypass can cause the obstructions/necrosis? Why is it a higher risk than the gen pop? I am so happy they caught it in time and you had a successful surgery! Best of luck in your continued recovery! -

Oops must have lost my Train of Thought or I fell asleep. The acid was trying to chomp a hole in my jejunem, see it doesn't have the mucus, protection of your stomach( although mine was no great shakes. That's why I came into WLS with Hector, my iddy bitty Gastric Ulcer). And your Duodenum has neutralizing things coming in like bile and Pancreatic secretions to protect things, bypassers come back in much more Downstream, something we have given up to have higher weight loss. As the Old Carnival Barker said "YOU PAY YOUR MONEY, YOU TAJE YOUR CHOICE!" And for ME I guess the choices back- fired -- Oh Well -IT is as IT is and I will make it through it all. Just still stuck on purees, broths, soups, protein shakes and Half the Vitamins and Minerals in the Western World! But I am Strong, Red-headed, I Don't and Won't Give Up, I'll be in Victory Lane eventually! -

Scheduled for Sleeve but thinking about Bypass instead?
ARMoma45 replied to MeowAMR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I originally was planning to have the sleeve but in all my research I discovered that there is a good possibility that my already significant GERD could be made worse...and that with the bypass, the GERD is typically lessened or cured. I'm having the Bypass in just over a week. Definitely talk it over with your surgeon but i'd go with the bypass. -

If you are prone to reflux, bypass is a better option. Sleeve is not an βeasierβ surgery. The are both very invasive -
I tell people. Surgery is becoming a more common thing now. For me, I feel like I'm educating people. Everyone has weight loss surgery for different reasons. Everyone gains weight for different reasons. I have never been an emotional eater. It's never been a comfort thing for me. I gained weight due to medications. High doses of prednisone ( 3 months causes 80lbs). Then add ambien, and I tend to sleep eat. Which is rough, because I have severe insomnia. I've tried all the other insomnia meds on the market ( and my ins didn't cover some so I was paying over a $100 a month for 2 of them) and they didn't work. I take ambien (which I get for 97 cents) and seroquel ( ambien puts me out, seroquel keeps me asleep)- if I don't take them, I'm up for 35-40 hours straight. I've tried to get better by keeping some "healthier" snacks hidden by my bed. But sometimes I'll get up and make a butter tortilla. And forget to turn the burner off π€¦ββοΈ.but I've gotten better with that! And no late night drives to Walmart! I'm maintaining at the weight I've wanted. So I'm happy about that. I've been sleeved and then bypass due to reflux getting increasing worse after, and cause aspiration at night. So I get questions on both. So I talk about both procedures, that not everyone you see get surgery is having because they "eat or lazy". People are quick to judge just by looking, had they talked to the person I'm sure they would see a much bigger picture. But really it's not their business unless that person wants to talk about it. Genetics also plays a factor in it as well. So it's not all about food as 90% of people want to jump on.

Scheduled for Sleeve but thinking about Bypass instead?
justmetj replied to MeowAMR's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not a guarantee you won't get gerd after getting the sleeve. That being said I also had heartburn at the end stages of both my pregnancies and the occasional heartburn after eating certain foods or overeating right before bed. It never occurred when I was thin so I determined that the cause was the abdominal pressure. I have not had any reflux or heartburn since my surgery, not to say it won't happen in the future but so far so good. Talk to your Dr. in depth about your concerns and ask him/her how many revisions they've had to do because of gerd so you can make the most educated decision you can. -
Scheduled for Sleeve but thinking about Bypass instead?
MeowAMR posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow I see my surgeon for my last visit before surgery, which will be 10 days later. Originally I chose the sleeve because I felt it was the better option for me. But now I'm scared I'm making the wrong choice. I'm scared to develop GERD. I don't have GERD now, but sometimes I do get reflux maybe once every two week or so seems like when I eat meats. I've had GERD bad when I was pregnant. To the point I was constantly throwing up all the time because of all the acid in my throat which cause it to bleed. I had to take Prilosec a majority of my pregnancy. I don't know if I'm over thinking it and I'll likely be fine. The first time I seen my surgeon he seen my enrollment paperwork and I had mentioned the occasional reflux so when he seen me he told me that the sleeve might cause the reflux to worsen. But if worst case and meds don't help he could do a bypass... which I don't want to get the sleeve then end up needing the bypass. UGH! What would you guys do?!?!?! Chance it and go with the sleeve or just do the bypass? -
Hi there, I am pre op for the gastric sleeve. I am a cash pay which is the only reason I chose the sleeve over bypass, I am a little nervous if the sleeve will be enough restriction for me. I need to lose 100 pounds. I struggle with emotional eating and sugar addiction. Iβm just hoping there are other in a similar situation with success with the sleeve.

What was your moment?
KatieMc replied to TattooedSeaStar's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Last time I thought about it, you needed a BMI of 40 and I was "only" 38. Also, the lap band was all the rage and I didn't like the sound of that. Fast Forward about 10 years and I was struggling as a member of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly - just accountability and support, you do your own diet), and one of the group members, who was 80lbs more than me, announced that she was getting the gastric bypass and I thought "good for her". My mother, also a member with just a 20-lb post-menopausal weight issue, asked if I'd ever considered it. I thought about my 28-year struggle, how I'd lose 15 and gain 20, lose 30 and gain 40, etc...and thought of those adages, "If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll keep getting what you always got" and "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". Well I didn't see the point in waiting until I was 300+ lbs, and that's where I was heading...plus my 49th birthday was just 2 weeks away...I was very clear in my choice. In the 10-week interim between the decision and the surgery, there were countless reinforcement moments that I was doing the right thing. My 5yo niece pointing at an old picture of me at 160 and saying she wanted me to look like that. A 9hr flight to London on British Airways, notorious for their narrow seats. Having a nasty drunk homelessman in England shout "Hey you, Fat C***!" to my face. Walking a whole mile out of necessity for the first time in years and wishing melodramatically for the sweet embrace of death (in my defense, the walk was very up-hilly). Getting my third round of cortisone injections in my knees and finding they weren't doing a great job anymore. -
I had the bypass, totally life changing My arms started out ~15 inches and are currently about ~11 inches. I have been really diligent about building muscle and taking my collagen and protein. Plus I think genetics play a huge roll in how our skin reacts

I am 23 days out from my gastric bypass on June 17. I was feeling like I'm doing something wrong because everything said the weight will melt off. Day off surgery I was 295, today I'm 281. Is this loss slow? I do notice I eat a quarter of what I would have normally eaten. I just got the app today. Glad to hear other stories.

β€My Revision Storyβ€

I may end up needing to revise myself. Thanks for starting this thread as I will be watching it closely. goid luck to you! -
Maybe you could get some other surgical opinions. There seem to be a lot of folks here that have revised from sleeve to bypass. Check out their posts and see what has worked for them. Best wishes,

OK guys maybe Iβm just pessimistic (I stress maybe) but am I the only one who has found this surgery to be a complete B*TCH?!
KarenLR75 replied to HopefulonLI's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@froufrou - you made me think of something (um besides fact that my surgery has changed this month from being a sleeve to being a bypass).... I had 1 c-section after my cervix swelled shut (they don't tell you about that in childbirth class) from my 1st 'big-headed baby' & then a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) with my 2nd big headed child who because her head was turned slightly, decided she wanted to hang out in the labor process for 36 hrs. The pushing for 4 hrs actually hurt me more the next day than the 36 hr ordeal I still tease her about. I literally blew every muscle that had once been in my abdomen. I actually have a 'high tolerance' in general; however, wise nurses have pointed something out to me that is common with patients with a high tolerance and that is thinking that we are trying to 'stave' off having to take any pain meds, we FAIL to ask for them in time so if the pain actually becomes worse than we realize we can handle, by that time everyone is trying to play 'catch up'. They told me I would be far better off NOT trying to tough it out as the last time I was in ICU with internal bleeding and I'd wait as I don't like to take pain meds...but on a few days, I'd get swept under the pain tsunami. Just something to think about for those of you who may be like me and maybe feel you should tough it out some...or for me, I worry that perhaps they get so used to ppl complaining about every minor ache & pain...and I don't want to be thought of like that. I should probably get over it. I actually have more of a problem dealing with nausea than with pain..which is ironic considering I'm having WLS -
I have bypass last July and haven't been able to loss any weight for last 6 months. Not going up, just staying the same. Any advise how to get the weight loss going again? Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Ohhhh @azhiker I love your excitement!!! Haha so fun. @losingit2018 my surgeon said the DS is the way to go he doesnβt revise to the bypass and since I have the sleeve already i can see advantages to the DS. Iβm not confident another surgery will be the answer since it seems like I have been gaining weight so easily w the sleeve after 2 years. I donβt want to redo my insides and have bathroom issues for the rest of my life and still be fat. Sigh
