Confession: Back To Basics - 2020 Broken Back &COVID Weight Gain
Chel1 replied to Chel1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi GradyCat! I just found 4C (0 sugar) Lemonade packets at Walmart I was not good at the fluids but giving it a go. These were faster ad less expensive than the Skinny Mixes I was going to try. You are right tracking is the key! I downloaded a free app called Protein Pal. It's very basic no bells or whistles. I enter my daily protein goal and log as I go. It doesn't tell you the nutritional value in food you have to know it and just plug the numbers in. I have the Free Food Diary v10 app on my computer & phone the I use to track meals...again just basic. Did you say you lost 25lbs since October? That is great! If I can get the first 30, well 27lbs to be exact, off to get to my pre injury/COVID weight I will be ecstatic! My surgery was 2/2017 so I am having to refamiliarize myself with those basic things again! Keep me posted on your journey. -

I have mild GERD, should I get VSG or RNY?
Spinoza replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Same here. I have had reflux for years. Always improved when I lost weight so I gambled on it getting better (not worse) when I lost weight after my surgery, whatever that might be. And it did. On paper if you have established GERD then RNY is a better choice because of the risk that GERD might actually worsen with VSG. My surgeon spent some time going through the risks with me pre-op. Just worked out OK for me I guess! -
Any October 2021 Surgeries?
SwedishPisces replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am tracking everything in myfitness pal. The least I have eating in a day is a little over 500 calories and the most right under 800 and I get at least 60 grams of protein even though I know it is supposed to be a minimum of 90. It is just so difficult! My doctor said it is normal to just intake that many calories at first but I don’t know why the stall in weight loss. It is so weird and I am so discouraged! I know it will get better though! It just has to! -
When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)
ms.sss replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I went ultra-low carb (20g net carbs a day), but I’m not vegetarian so it would’ve been easier for me. This was not my prescribed program, i chose to do this on my own (and fully disclosed it to my NUT). I didn’t eat any fruit during weight loss phase save for the occasional berry (least amount of sugar in the fruit family). But i do now at 3+ years post op. You can try google-ing Vegetarian Keto for some food/recipe ideas, but i think that so soon after surgery you may not reach your bariatric protein requirements and stay below your maintenance calories to be true Keto. So maybe a modified version of it? -
My doc had a goal of 60% excess weight loss, which was 175 lbs. I chose the mid-point of “normal” BMI range for my height: 120 lbs. I ended up revising my goal and ceased weight loss efforts at 127 because I felt I was looking too gaunt when I reached that number. Am 3+ years post op now and weighed 117.2 this morning. My insignificant opinion is to set a reasonable goal weight and adjust as necessary given how you feel, how YOU think you look, and the efforts you are willing to put in. Good Luck! ❤️

Christian sleevers any the just had...
Wonderkind replied to lachellove's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m glad to be back in here too. My vsg was on 5/25/2016. I got pregnant and had my daughter 8/14/17. I love my baby but it really messed up my sleeve and as of a couple weeks ago I’m almost back to my surgery weight. I went back to basics and have lost down to 189. (I was 200 on surgery day). Who couldn’t use the prayer of brothers and sisters in Christ! -
Did your comorbidities go away after surgery?

Weight loss (75 lb) resolved my hypertension (which I expected) but it also has drastically improved my migraines w/aura (which I wasn't expecting). -
2 weeks into process, crazy insurance rules and confused!
LisaCee replied to LisaCee's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Thanks! That's helpful, I guess this is what they mean. I'm doing the same, trying to lower my caffeine, and slowly weaning off the seltzer, the amount of water they suggested is mad crazy though. I'm now 3.5 lbs down out of 10. I lose weight easily initially, just seems like they could have spelled this out in simple terms! The insurance requirements are rough for me, as I have little margin for loss, but really need this for my health! -
Knee surgery

I had my sleeve in 2015. Did pretty good at keeping my knee replacement off for a few more years. Ended up getting really bad again in 2019 and had both knees replaced in summer 2020 & gained 50lbs back after. I wish I did my knees before my sleeve.. I ended up having RNY a few months ago due to GERD & regain but regret everything about the RNY. (long story) Sent from my SM-G986U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Hello! My program has been getting patients up to/over 1200 cals asap. I have been on solid foods since week 4. My program focuses more on texture, and what to have more often vs less often (ie Protein vs say candy). I have grapes usually everyday, and a small banana. My carbs per day is between 120-150 usually, with 80-107g of protein. Weight loss is slower now, as I am at 10 months post op...but I have lost 120 lbs thus far, with that amount of carbs and calories pretty much the entire time. I eat potatoes, pasta and rice, and bread....just significantly less and less often than I used to. Hope that helps! -
Did your comorbidities go away after surgery?
Mz D replied to ClareLynn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've only lost around 40lbs and it reversed my type 2 and has bettered my hypertension. I'm thrilled with the diabetes result because I wasn't taking anything for it; it was pretty much the final straw that pushed me to get surgery because I already have enough health issues to deal with. I was just controlling my diabetes via diet and that resolved in the first two months after surgery. I also was able to get off one of my hypertension meds, but I've had that over a decade and I'm not surprised it hasn't gone away. I'm not expecting it to improve my joint pain because that's due to a childhood disease and it hasn't lessened any. I think if any of your problems are more recently diagnosed, you'll see a quicker bounce back from those issues. I'm not sure why they'd expect weight loss to resolve your idiopathic intercranial hypertension or migraine. That doesn't even seem optimistic, they aren't really related. I don't expect it to cure my macular degeneration; we don't store fat in our eyeballs, so it's not going to impact that problem. Push your doctor to try new meds for the migraines since you still have them. Are you on ajovy? It has helped my mom with hers but nothing has gotten rid of them entirely. -

Have You Ever Noticed How Sometimes You Have to Eat MORE to Lose More?
GradyCat posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Am I crazy or has this happened to you to? Well, not that those things are mutually exclusive. LOL! 😀 I remember the first time I did Weight Watchers (WW) 20 years ago and I wasn't losing and it was because I wasn't using all my daily allowance of points. So the counselor told me to eat MORE, which I thought was crazy, but she was right and when I ate ALL of my daily points, I actually lost more weight. Here I am now post-WLS sleeve VSG and starting over again after gaining weight during COVID and giving WW another try and I'll be darned if it's not still true. I wasn't using my Weekly Points and I was stalled, but as soon as I started eating MORE, I started losing again. Why is that? I still don't understand it. I certainly wasn't starving myself at around 1,000 calories per day. Does anybody know why it works this way? Has this happened to you too? -

Confession: Back To Basics - 2020 Broken Back &COVID Weight Gain
GradyCat replied to Chel1's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Join the club, sister! I experience the same thing. I gained 25 pounds throughout COVID and only recently started back to Square One around September or October and have lost all of those jerky pounds back and am focusing on working once again toward original goal weight. I've been going to the gym very regularly and just getting back to the basics of food tracking, protein, water, etc. My sleeve is still working for me as I can only eat small meals, so that tool is still there. I just have to use it! You can do this! -
When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)
Orinskye replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I’m ten months out and unless I’m eating a salad? I usually don’t have much room for more than a bite or two of either of those things. Even by weight loss surgery standards it seems like my volume is really low, but then my diet is a tad different than a normal post op diet (I have kidney issues so the amount of protein they normally want is not actually how much I should consume) . -
When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)
DaisyAndSunshine posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
So, my program has me on fruits and veggies and even grain if one can tolerate right from month 2. I don't do much grain (may be once a week) since I don't like eating it much. Though based on our outlined eating schedule, we should take 3 to 4 servings of fruits (depending how we tolerate ofc). I don't have any issue with tolerating any ofthe fruits (I don't dump). But ofc if I do that my carbs shoot quite high especially cuz I am vegetarian and I get my protein mostly from dairy (yogurt, milk, cottage cheese and other cheese), which again has significant carbs. My average net carbs are between 60 to 70 grams. Anyhow, so I was wondering how did y'all carry your carbs during the weight loss phase? And when did you introduce fruits and veggies in your diet? -
Did your comorbidities go away after surgery?
ShoppGirl replied to ClareLynn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My only issue was joint pain and that has eased up quite a bit with the weight loss. I wouldn’t lose hope quite yet though, you still have a little ways to go until goal so you may still see relief from some of those conditions. Hopefully all. I do see a lot of people on here saying that those types of things did resolve with post surgery. I just don’t know how close to goal they were when it happened. -
Did your comorbidities go away after surgery?
ClareLynn posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Every single one of my doctors encouraged me to get bariatric surgery because they said that it would cure all my comorbidities. I have type 2 diabetes, idiopathic intercranial hypertension, migraine, GERD, and hypertension all of which they said would go away. I think I should have realized that was super optimistic. These are the same doctors that said if I lost 10% of my body weight, all of these would get better and they didn't. Well I've had the surgery. I've lost 93lbs so far and ... I still have every single one of those problems. I feel a bit mislead or maybe just broken. I have other medical problems besides those, they were just the ones they blamed on my weight. I like losing weight but had gotten my hopes up about being less impacted by these other diseases and it didn't pan out. Did it work out for anyone else and they actually had other medical problems resolve after surgery? -

Gee, that sounds very similar, although they told me (on this WEIRD group chat) that I could set everything for ASAP. Won't it be fun if that isn't correct? I have endoscopy, sleep study, cardiac clearance, upper GI, some other lung study (X-ray?) to do. I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to have to carbo-load near the end of this stress, just to ensure that I don't lose too much weight. The whole 'lose but not too much!' thing is likely to drive me batty! Plus it seems extremely unproductive and antithetical to learning new habits. Trying to stay positive, but like I say, I'd prefer to type-A it, making specific goals of weight per week, IF they tell me the 'by when' date for losing. -

Hi, I just started with a Bariatric Center with the goal of gastric sleeve, and I'm confused enough it's frustrating. Had my first visit with surgeon, he told me that for my insurance, I should lose 10 lbs (no more without endangering my insurance).. Seems like it's five months until surgery, possibly six. I then attended a (no lies, pretty bad) online group nutritional presentation, that really skimmed over things like no caffeine and no carbonated bees, and was also informed that I had responsibilities to make ALL my pre op appointments myself, but I haven't been given any list of labs/tests to do so. I have no diet assigned... ? No instructions were specific about what I should be eating right now, but am trying to go for a LOT more protein and a LOT less carbs. Am I supposed to be starting with protein shakes? They mentioned, but no real clear direction. No followup appointments with the bariatric center have been scheduled as yet, no one has returned my call of last week, basically begging for my pre op appointment list. I try to be patient but am definitely a type A person who likes to plan. I am worried about losing too much weight and very confused about what specifically my diet IS. Already down about 2.5 pounds. I don't do well with uncertainty I guess. Also, the changes over the past two weeks, eating less, the ever=present journalling of food, the appointments I have been called for (apparently, not everything was my responsibility), the trying to lessen the caffeine, and my beloved sodastream plain seltzers, is difficult. I'm definitely planning to call the center with more specific questions this week, and in hopes I receive a call back, but can anyone give me a feel for what the first couple weeks in a program are like, and should I relax about what feels like chaos? -
Confession: Back To Basics - 2020 Broken Back &COVID Weight Gain
Chel1 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Here Goes; I have been in denial & coming back home to this forum has made me "see" that I have a lot of work to do & accountability. In the Spring of 2020 during the height of COVID my neighbors dog ran out on me and as I stumbled while trying to get away from the dog I fell, hit the concrete, & couldn't move. I had broken a bone in my back. I cried at every day for at least 2 weeks due to the pain. I was immobilized and the work I did outside of my home that had me active, lifting heavy items, & always moving I could no longer due. Here 1 1/2 years later I continue to have back issues. If I walk too long, lift too much or sit too long I am in pain. Although I can't consume a lot of food at one time, I know I am getting calories in with the wrong things. After surgery I was no longer able to drink straight water, it would make me nauseated and it would come back up so I know I am not getting enough fluids in. I am vitamin deficient (lab results) and I have put too much of my time into helping family & friends that honestly, I forgot about me. I was at 163lbs now I am at 190. I was 33lbs from goal now I am at 60lbs from goal. I know to some it may not seem like a lot but most of us know losing 5lbs takes a lot of effort! Bariatric Pal Forums: Coming back home & reading posts after being away so long has made me look at myself in the mirror & remember what I did in the first place that made my weight loss successful. SO HERE I GO: recommitting to myself; committing to the 30/15 rule (wait to eat 15 mins after drinking and wait to drink 30 mins after eating), COUNTING my calories & making sure I get in my grams of protein (which Unjury is a great brand), finding health zero cal/sugar enhancers to get my water in daily; & getting back to strength training that would not put a strain on my back. I don't know about you guys but COVID time gave me an excuse to cancel my Planet Fitness membership 😕 Am I going to do what they call a "pouch reset"? Nawhhhh...I'm doing a recommitment to self reset. I know what to do & I have all the tools (food scale, portion control serving utensils etc.) I am raising the bar once again for my life. Thank you Fitness Pal Family for always being here and giving all of us prodigal children a home to come back to. eating reset back to basics.doc- 7 replies

Looooong stall - Almost two months out
The Greater Fool replied to LouLouM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've got the one sure-fire way to avoid stalls: Get off the scale. Scales are crazy-makers. You know the saying that a watched pot never boils? Well, a watched scale never moves. Trust your plan and the weight will come off. Good luck, Tek
