Just starting journey band to bypass
loridee24 replied to loridee24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks Elcee. Have you had any issues with reflux since the conversion? Even fully unfilled I still have issues that I'm hoping will go away once it's removed and won't reappear with the bypass. -
I'm 4 months past bypass

I'm having Gastric Bypass Surgery

Why did your surgeon opt for sleeve instead of bypass if you have such bad reflux issues?

Here I go again!
Second Time Around replied to freelance frog's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It is encouraging to hear other stories that are similar to mine. I had the lap band in 2009 and lost about 40 pounds with it. No matter what I did I just could not get below 190. The good thing was that I really stayed between 190 and 195 most of the time. I started having terrible reflux around 2016 and they wanted to remove my band. I was so scared of gaining all of my weight back that I just kept changing the date and putting off the removal. About a year went by and I just could not take the complications of my terrible reflux. I was literally sleeping sitting up every night and my body hurt everywhere from that crazy situation. I had the band removed in Sept of 2018 and by Dec I had put on 30 pounds ( with no changes to my eating habits) I decided to speak with someone about my options for sleeve or bypass. After seeing the surgeon he thought that I would be a great candidate for the sleeve and we sched surgery for Aug 12. I have put on 60 pounds since having the band out and I feel absolutely miserable. I am so excited and very nervous to take this next step. I will start my preop liquid diet one week before surgery but I have been thinking about starting a little early. For those that have already had the surgery any suggestions on pre-op diets, what helped get you through..... also was anyone able to lose any weight pre-op? -
I am at the very beginning of my journey. I just had my consult for gastric bypass surgery last Wednesday and already have my consult appointment for my endoscopy and my first nutrition appointment scheduled for next week. I love reading all the posts and seeing all the success stories! I will be posting my journey along the way. I have to have 6 months of nutrition classes as one of my insurance requirements, so I should be ready for surgery by January. Any and All advise is welcome 😊❤️

Asking older sleevers, did I make a mistake?
Mj77803 replied to gabybab's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It happens! I'm 21 mo post op sleeve/ 4 mo post bypass, and I still suck gettin calories. But don't focus on the number. I know that's hard, because that's our validation that the surgery is working. What keeps me motivated is that I'm still losing inches even if the number isn't moving. You'll still notice your clothes are loose . Stay positive, stay motivated, and keep following the plan. -
You're welcome! You can always pm me (private message) if you want to. The calorie requirements will vary from person to person, activity levels, etc so it's hard to say. As a rough guess. I would think 2000 was too much. You can always try a "pouch reset" where you go back to eating like the early days post surgery and progress thru the stages. Do a search on the app. There are lots of posts on pouch resets. 1500 is probably too much as well if you want to be losing, especially if you're not super active. That sounds more like maintenance. I'm only 4 months post gastric bypass but I don't eat more than 800 calories, even on days where I workout hard at the gym. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Just starting journey band to bypass

I went band to bypass in Jan. Have lost all the weight I gained and am now sitting at goal -
I'm 4 months post op bypass. Does anyone know where our macros should be? I'm wanting to log food in my fitbit app. Also what is a healthy calorie intake? I'm not looking for peoples opinions just if you've spoken to and gotten this info from your Dr or nutritionist or if you yourself have a background in nutrition. Thank you. I WILL be double checking with my own team but won't be able to until Wednesday and just wanted some info to get me through the weekend. Thank you! ❤My Revision Story❤
Mj77803 replied to GreenTealael's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a restriction and severe gerd as well, with taking ambien and seroquel for severe insomnia I wasn't waking up at night when I was producing acid while sleeping, aspirated a few times, I was bypassed fairly quickly. I credit my surgeon for being quick and amazing. Super important to have someone who listens and acts fast.( he fixed my HH when he did my sleeve.) Good luck in your recover process. I can say it's been the best thing. It's been great to be reflux free. Although I'm in dumping syndrome prettt regularly. However, I'd rather deal with that for 45 mins then deal with the insane reflux! -
Malabsorption of psych meds? Or any meds?
froufrou replied to Briswife15's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3583374/ " “Ms. Z” is a 48-year-old white married woman who had failed multiple attempts at weight loss and presented for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Her height was 1.57 m, and her weight was 114 kg (body mass index=46) She had a history of obsessive-compulsive disorder and recurrent major depression and had been successfully treated with sertraline, 100 mg/day, with a 2-year period of remission prior to surgery. Ms. Z underwent a laparoscopic retrocolic, retrogastric Roux-en-Y gastric bypass under general anesthesia. She had an uncomplicated postoperative course. Three months after surgery, she reported a relapse during the previous month, with symptoms of marked anxiety. She had a recurrence of obsessions and compulsions involving keeping objects in an orderly and symmetrical fashion. Ms. Z was the first subject to enter our formal pharmacokinetics study. We confirmed that the bioavailability of sertraline postoperatively was only 36% of the preoperative value. We offered Ms. Z liquid sertraline at the same dosage (100 mg/day) to improve absorption. One month later, she reported a return to baseline, with marked reduction in her anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms." -
Just starting journey band to bypass
loridee24 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi All, I had my lapband put in in 2007 and was initially very successful. I lost 145 lbs in 2 years and did great for another 3. Unfortunately, I started having issues with my band including horrible heart burn, food getting stuck, etc. I have had fills and unfills over the years but have been largely unfilled for a long time. I finally had to be completely unfilled 2 years ago when I couldn't swallow water even with the band mostly empty. i've gained all of my weight back through it all. I finally decided that I think I want to go to bypass and met with the surgeon this week. My Dr wants to remove my band first (he's scheduling in the next month), then while I heal he wants me to lose some weight and hopefully be ready for bypass in 3-4 months. I would love to connect with some of you who have been through or are going through this. Any advice? Looking forward to connecting. Lori -
Hi! I posted this in the revision board but that board is a ghost town :) haha. Am en route to have my lapband revised to the RNY (most likely- not sold on the sleeve...) and I am trying to figure out how much time off from work I need. When I had the lapband surgery, I spent a day in the hospital with gas pains and just a little sore. If I had the job I have now back then (middle school teacher- so I can be fairly sedentary if needed) I think I would’ve been able to go back to work within a few days. I mean, I just had a baby with no drugs, had to be stitched and I was going on long walks the day after. I also had ankle reconstruction and went back to work in 4 days (including a weekend). Not saying that I am super tough, just a seasoned surgery patient- there are way more that I could list :) Those who have had both surgeries, how do you think the recovery time and pain compares? Thanks! Amanda

How long after EGD till surgery date?
Lynda486 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my EGD on July 9th and still have not heard back from the surgeon, or the office. I do know the results of the EGD and he plans on fixing that, but I not sure if he means a Gastric Bypass or just to repair the fistula he found. How long should I wait to call into the office? Lynda -

How many ways is there to do an RNY?? SO confused!
NYJenn replied to KarenLR75's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I def did not have an endoscopy I did have bypass and my gallbladder removed at the same time. Recovery was easy, I have a high pain tolerance. After about day 3-4 I was back to feeling pretty normal, just tired -
Love the accessory of the day!!!! And adorable figure. I agree, what puff and stuff? Congrats on your most excellent revision, on not whining, and on being such a trooper!!!

Malabsorption of psych meds? Or any meds?
Darktowerdream replied to Briswife15's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
21 Medication Rules after Gastric Bypass There are certain pills that you should not be taking after surgery because they will either irritate your pouch, such as all pills in the NSAIDs catagory or pills that just won't be absorbed like they should. Any pills with enteric coating (kind of like a candy coating) or any extended release type med may not be absorbed like it is supposed to. If any of your meds do fall into those catagories you will want to get them changed. Those meds need the gastric juices to break them down and after RNY those juices just aren't there to do the job until well down your intestinal system which won't be enough time to break those meds down. So basicly, you want to avoid any meds that are extended release, delayed, controlled, sustained or any medication that is an NSAIDs. Over-the-counter NSAIDs are: Aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Orudis KT, Ibuprofen, Excederin Prescribed NSAIDs are: Motrin, Naprosyn, Anaprox, Toradol, Lodine, Feldene, Indocin, Daypro, Relafen, Voltaren and Celebrex. There is the belief by some surgeons out there that even one NSAIDs can cause some kind of damage to your pouch and they strongly recommend staying away from them, if possible. If medically there is a reason to be taking them, such as the use of low dose asprin for heart conditions, it is okay to take them but you should also be placed on some kind of protectant such as Carafate or Cytotec. If you are unsure if any of the meds you are on fall into any of these catagories talk to your Pharmacist, they will know. It isn't a bad idea to let your Pharmacist know that you are a Gastric Bypass patient. They can list it in your information almost like an allergy so that if you are ordered a med that you shouldn't be on an alert will be generated. There are ALOT of physicians out there that don't know this kind of information it is our respondsibility to make sure they are aware of it. Here are 21 basic rules we should all follow in regards to our meds: 1. If side effects appear or increase, consult your doctor or your pharmacist about dosage or other medication options. 2. First-pass effect medications may not provide effective absorption at the currant dosages. Check dosage or check for alternative medications that do not have first pass effect. (your Pharmacist will know if any of your meds are "first-pass" meds) 3. Medications that are in a liquid or solution form will be absorbed faster than those that are solids. Check for liquid forms of medications. 4. No extended-release, sustained-release, controlled-release, timed-release or osmotic pump medications. 5. Many medications can also have gastrointestinal side-effects like gas, diarrhea, constipation or intestinal cramping. 6. Read the pamphlet attached to the prescription bag for potential side-effects. 7. You should not take any NSAIDs without a protectant such as Cytotec or Carafate. EVER!!!! 8. Be able to recognize an NSAIDs when you see one. 9. Use a protectant if taking daily low-dose aspirin for heart health or to prevent stroke. 10. Check all PMS over the counter medications (OTC) for NSAID ingredients. 11. Read all OTC medication packaging to check for NSAIDs ingredients. 12. Inhaled steroids for asthma are okay. 13. Taking steroids of any kind, even by injection, requires taking a protectant as well. 14. Medications commonly used in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis such as Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva have the potential to cause gastrointestinal ulceration. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about alternatives. 15. Do not continue to take medications that have been discontinued. 16. If dosages have been changed, do not finish out a previous dosage just because it is there. CHange the dosage immediately unless instructed otherwise by your physician. 17. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if any of your medications are fat soluble. If so, stay in touch with the prescribing physician and report your currant weight every month for possible dosage changes. (as the amount of fat in your body changes your dosages may also need to be changed) 18. Tell all medical providers about your status as a weight loss surgery patient. (Lap-Banders too!) 19. Keep all your scripts at one pharmacy if possible. 20. Meet and get to know your local pharmacists. They truly can be invaluable friends. 21. Remember to have everyone work as a team for you! You're worth it! One other word of warning when it comes to taking Tylenol. You MUST watch the amount of Tylenol you are taking. No more than 4,000mg in a 24 hour period. You can cause yourself liver damage with Tylenol overdose. You need to read your labels. Look to see if things have Tylenol or acetamenophin in them. Vicodan has Tylenol so if you are taking Vicodan or Lortab make sure you aren't adding a lot of Tylenol on top of it. That is why it is important to read the information on those pharmacy bags and on otc medications. -
Malabsorption of psych meds? Or any meds?
Darktowerdream replied to Briswife15's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Having chronic illness I’m trying to figure this out myself. I have basically no pain management. Especially since nsaids like Motrin are on the permanent cannot have list. Some pills should never be crushed. Some (if you are Lucky) might come in a liquid form. The crushed pills put too much into your system too fast. I did find a post on another forum with Information about medication after gastric bypass surgery. I don’t think the surgeons know anything, nor did mine ever mention medications after surgery. Seems that none of them do or know. Maybe they assume we won’t need medication afterwards. i will look for the information and share it below.
