Is the sleeve really "just as good"
Raynbolite replied to onmyway11's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So my hubby had the bypass, I had the sleeve. He is loosing weight faster, I have to work harder and it's slower. BUT, I am getting stronger and healthier by working harder. I can do things I have been able to do in years. The sleeve hasn't effected my meds I have to take for my bipolar. The absorption seems to be the same. My hubby hasn't had complications nor have I, but his recovery time has been longer. I think...for me...the sleeve was the better choice. I am changing my bad habits and learning healthier ones. It's slow, but constant. This is my experience. Sent from my XT1650 using the BariatricPal App -
I don't think I'm ready ):
Chrissy C replied to CashmereAndBones's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wish I could introduce you to my niece. She had bypass surgery in 2012 at the tender age of 20. At 1st she questioned herself about it and now after losing over 200 lbs she wouldn't have it any other way. She's happy she's now able to do things she never thought possible. The crazy thing is she eats like a grown man smoke and still drink alcohol. She has an amazing social life just like a young adult would. So yes you may have to give up the things you love for a short time but soon you will be able and free to do as you please without gaining any weight back. My poor niece wants to gain 10 lbs but can't because every time she put on a few pounds it fall right back off. She is now 26 and she's so in love with the new her. It's ok to second guess yourself but don't worry about it. You will have your life back sooner than you no it. This time it will be the new healthier smaller you. Deposit down! Surgery in Sept. 5'0" / 214
Kayla Joy replied to rwhite85's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! My name is Kayla and I am 30, 5'0 and cw is 220 my surgery is scheduled for 9/7 in San Antonio, TX. For gastric bypass. They recommended that for me because of my acid reflux. I am also a cash customer because I don't have insurance at the moment (I will once I'm married). It cost me less to do cash then it is to pay for insurance and then all the fees. I have a few appointments coming up in August, seems like all at once! Lol Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app -
What prompted your revision?
Bandedbut replied to Bandedbut's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
OH, second question, how far along in your weight loss journey were you when you had the revision? Is there a point where you wouldn't qualify, self pay or not, because you are too close to your goal, even if that was from the band? -
1 year, 1 month after surgery and pregnant! Advice!?
whitneytij replied to smellslikecoffee's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I found out I was pregnant in Nov. 2013, after being banded Feb. 2013, so I was only 8 months post-op. I notified my surgeon immediately, and they told me I should be fine unless I was having a lot of morning sickness, then I would possibly need a partial unfill. During my first OB appointment, when I told her I was banded, she immediately recommended that I get 1/2 fluid removed, which I did (it was about 3ccs removed). I had lost 85 lbs in the 8 months before I became pregnant, and now I'm 14 weeks along and have gained 15 lbs even though I am sick ALL THE TIME. I am not upset in the least about gaining weight. I feel as though I look funny, because I still have a lot of loose, flabby skin on my stomach, and I am bummed that it will probably hide my baby bump. But I know my baby's in there, somersaulting around like the best of them! I am hoping to have a natural birth, but I read a lot of pregnant women who have had WLS end up having c-sections, but I hope that's mostly people who have had the more invasive surgeries like gastric bypass. I wish you the best with your pregnancy! -
Julie - I had a total hysterectomy eight months prior to my band surgery. I did not plan it that way, but that's how it worked out. At the time of my hysterectomy, bariatric surgery wasn't even a thought in my mind. I had female issues, and had to resolve them. It wasn't until a few months later that I decided to move forward with WLS. As far as what to do first, you need to work that out with your gynecologist and your bariatric surgeon. Depending on the reason for a hysterectomy, that might be something you need to do first. Whatever is best for your health, is the way to go. Only your doctors can provide you with that direction. As for sleeve vs. band, that is a very personal choice. If you are okay having 70-75% of your stomach removed, then maybe that is a good option. For me, I wanted something that I had more control over. I also had plication done with my band, which, I believe, has made a tremendous difference overall. But I do sleep much better at night knowing that the whole thing can be reversed. One other thing to keep in mind..... Weight can be gained with each and every one of these surgeries. I'm at the 10 month mark, and already having times where I push it. I saw my doctor last week and got "the talking to". After time, we get used to the new "setup", and (if we're so inclined), find ways to eat around it. The same goes for the bypass, sleeve, band.....all of it. My sister works with a woman who had the sleeve, and she's put back quite a bit of weight. She can't eat a lot at one time, but she grazes on crap all day long. No matter which surgery you choose, it's ALL up to you/us. If we don't change our heads, there is no miracle out there to make us lose weight. It's a big decision, so just make sure that you do all the research. As you already see with your sisters, you can't go on any particular person's success with any surgery, because we are all different. I wish you all the best :-)

Hello, I am 6 weeks post op and have no idea what to eat. I was so nauseous for the last 2 1/2 weeks and now I'm starting from scratch. I am scared to eat anything bc I throw up so easily. I am having a very hard time with fluid intake also. Nothing tastes good, even the flavored water I drank with no problems before surgery. Any advice is appreciated!!

It's done...although with last-minute changes
PorkChopExpress replied to PorkChopExpress's topic in The Guys’ Room
The honeymoon seems to be nearing its end. I am at a point now where I feel like my portion sizes are satisfying both physically and mentally, even though people still ask if I'm getting enough to eat (when they don't know I have had surgery), or if something is wrong. I don't need to follow the rule of not drinking before I eat, however I do still have to refrain during and after, for about 30-40 minutes. My average calorie intake now is probably around 1,800...and my TDEE is somewhere around 2,800 without extra exercise. So I'm generally in a 7,000 calorie deficit every week, which manifests in an average of 2 pounds lost per week...however I do experience plateaus that last a couple weeks. Now I'm interested in gradually increasing my caloric intake as I lift weights, to support regaining my lost muscle mass. I've lost a TON of muscle, through this process. However, having taken off around 135lbs so far, exercise is WORLDS easier now. Overall, I'm feeling very positive about being able to take it the rest of the way, on my own steam. The surgery has enabled me to get within spitting distance of my goals and it no longer feels like a giant mountain to climb, but a reasonable hill. On a side note, my wife just came home yesterday after having followed in my footsteps, by getting the gastric bypass. So she's about to experience the process, as well. I'm glad I went first, so give her support and advice while speaking from experience. -
Band to Sleeve in TEXAS? Doc referrals DfW area or Denton?
ashelaine replied to Poorehouse's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you want a doctor that has done a lot of revisions- Dr. Barker would be high on the list in DFW. He's a HUGE Practice, but he's a good guy and a dang good surgeon. Dr. hodges who works with him actually took out my gallbladder in 07 before she was working with Dr. Barker and she was AMAZING! -
@@candacer If you search success stories on this site you will likely get alot of information. I was 51 when I had RNY gastric bypass. I chose bypass over sleeve because I suffered from GERD and RNY is know to cure it. I also had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and stage 3 kidney disease. I am 5'10" and at my heaviest weight was 315 lbs. I lost a 152lbs in 18 months and reached my goal this past march. I went from a size 26 to a size 8/10. Best of all I no longer have GERD, sleep apnea, high BP or high cholesterol. My diabetes has been in remission since the day I had surgery and my stage 3 kidney disease has been in remission since 3 months post op. For me, having this surgery was the best thing I ever did. I had no complications and I believe that is because I followed doctors orders to the letter. I was scared when i started mostly because of all the required change but once I started the process i kept my goals top of mind and they literally drove me. Best of luck to you!

I am, also, a success. I have lost all of my excess weight and am healthier than I have been in 35 years. I can wear cute clothes, again. I can buy them at regular stores and not try them on. Before loosing the weight, I bought at Lane Bryant catalog, and then worried that the clothes would be too tight. I have not had the easiest time, but loosing weight is not for the weak. It takes won't power(I won't eat that!). There is NO magic potion. Not banding, gastric bypass or sleeve. The surgeries, which ever you choose are tools to help you loose weight. How successful you are is up to YOU! Good luck. Karen PS:My stats=start 244/size 22w, current 140/size 8. BMI=was 43/currently 24.8

I had the sleeve. I have had no real issues, my hubby had the bypass and he had a longer recovery. He lost weight faster than me at first, but now we're pretty much at the same rate. I take meds for other issues not related, the sleeve seems to not interfere with them at all. My hubby had to stop some meds like advil and it has been frustrating with his arthritis. Tylenol just doesnt do it for him. I honestly love my sleeve and am happy to have chosen it. But neither of us regret our choice to do this. The plus outweighs any negative. Lately, I've been thinking of doing the bypass, but, I have these concerns: 1. I'm scared of having my innard's rerouted, 2. I do have mild case of Gerd, (does eating the right food still give you Gerd? For me, it does.) 3. I have sleep apnea 4. My bmi isn't that high. (The nutritional visits are really helping.) Not sure how I can make this final decision. Are there any other factor's to consider? the sleep apnea is completely irrelevant when it comes to which surgery you choose GERD often gets worse with the sleeve. If you have GERD now, even mild, I'd strongly consider the bypass. I know a lot of people are freaked out about having their intestines re-routed, but to be honest, I don't really think that's any more radical than having 80% of your stomach removed... high vs low BMI really doesn't matter, either. Most people who have the DS have high BMI's, but with both the sleeve and the bypass, it's a mix - some high, some low RNY cures it and I honestly do not believe rerouting your digestive system is any more aggressive than removing your stomach. With RNY, it can be reversed. With sleeve, when the rest of your stomach is gone, the only thing that can be done is to convert to RNY. Does this make sense? Definitely makes sense. Do you know how long they had you in surgery? I'm starting to consider this.

I was sleeved 22/12/16, lost 19 pounds and been stalled for about a week. Getting discouraged because I am following my plan and getting my Protein and Water. Hope it kicks back in soon. Starting to wonder if I should have done bypass instead. HW 280 SW 257 CW 239 sleeve surgery 12/12/16

Newby full of anxiety and questions
Jerald180 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Scheduled for a mini gastric bypass this Friday, the 19th. Trying today to get a list together of everything I need as far as new foods and drinks so I can have it all in house by then. Confusing with so many different sites/people saying different things or mentioning different products. I would really appreciate any help or sites that kind of lay it out in simple terms. I've been given a lot of paperwork from the doctor and hospital and met with the hospital's bariatric person. Just ordered disposable medicine cups and case of Ensure Max Protein (suggested by Dr.'s PA) Also bought a bag of Bariatric Advantage Calcium Chews and Bariatric Fusion Multivitamins from them to start out on but will source out equivalent products that may be less expensive during my week off next week. Any tips or things to watch out for are welcome. Thanks in advance! -
I am sorry you are going through this. But I wonder, if you could not follow the diet instructions for the band if you will be able to follow the diet instructions for the gastric bypass. I would work with a therapist to see what is causing me to not follow the diet requirements. I have heard that the bypass can fail people too, just like the band can fail.

Thanks for your concerns -- there is a good possibility that counseling may help me. I do take Paxil for depression, and feel like it does a good job; however, I don't know why I "lose control" sometimes, in the food aspect of life. My portions are very well controlled, but I make bad choices. I am trying really hard to eat Protein first just because I know that's the hardest for me to get in and I am exercising for 1 hour 2 days a week. I need to drink more Water. Basically, I know what I need to do, I just don't do it, and the frustrating thing is I don't know WHY I don't do the right things. BTW, my surgeon called and said he would do a revision from the band to the bypass on me. He wants me to start with the psych eval again, and I think that's a great idea. I go to see the psychologist next week. Keep me in your thoughts - I appreciate the concern. Stephanie

Please, please give me any advice you might have. I am contemplating having my band removed and a bypass done. I am 19 months from banding and have not lost a single pound. I am the same weight I was when I left the hospital the day after surgery. I will be the first to admit that I have not followed all the lap band "rules". I've made poor food choices and haven't exercised like I should. However, my portions are decreased dramatically. The band is doing its job - I'm not doing mine. I feel like with the difference in portion sizes from what I used to eat til now - I should have lost SOME weight. I'm not expecting to be a big loser because I don't apply myself like I should. That being said, I am becoming very frustrated and depressed because of the lack of success. I'm wondering if maybe the band was not the right WLS for me. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm really thinking about the bypass - even though it is so risky, I'm wondering if that will work for me. I don't need criticism - just advice. Thanking you in advance.

I'm not saying that your PA does not know what she is talking about, but people do fail with bypass. There is a way around any weight loss surgery if one really wants to. I mean with the band when you have the right restriction it forces you to make changes or at least it did for me. Both surgeries have consequence if you don't follow the rules. If you look at the statistics after 3-5 years, the results with both surgeries are comparable. Maybe you don't have good restriction. Did you do after-care? How many fills did you have? Oh and there is the guy on the Biggest Loser that had the bypass and look where he is at!

Considering Revision-?s on Weight loss Resistance
katinhouston replied to katinhouston's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks everyone for the encouragement! I feel like the sleeve is the answer. I just have to get my doctor to agree! He feels like since there is nothing actually "wrong" with my band that we should try to make the band work with proper adjustments. I understand what he is trying to do and appreciate his honesty (he could always have said -yeah lets do the revision and made $ off of me). But, I feel like its prolonging the inevitable and don't want to waste another x number of months figuring that out. I would rather have the surgery (which I don't take lightly BTW, and am scared to death of), but then I can get on with losing the weight and on with my life.
