Bypass recommended Not Sleeve
Keri1019 replied to kell911's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Travelher when did you have your bypass did you have to travel to your surgeon? Did you have any post op problems the first 9 days? I have to travel to Vegas then I have a home about an hour away. I am staying there until post op day 9. I am then traveling to see my girl in her last home college basketball game senior night. I will be staying a week there then flying home to Montana. What do I need to take on this journey? What should I be aware of?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Has anyone heard or done GJ REVISION WITH ROUX if so would you share your experience with me,as far as:starting weight, weightloss, complication etc.
-
I've a question- before you have weight loss surgery do you have to do a colon prep like before a colonoscopy? I feel like I should already know the answer but I don't really. It seems like it would make sense, especially if you were having gastric bypass or a duodenal switch where your intestines are going to be manipulated. So does anyone have an answer? Does roux n y gastric bypass present challenges for future unrelated surgeries?
gz345ski posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had my bypass in March of 2015. Now I'll be having a hysterectomy on April 12 th of this year. Does the bypass present any issues with being intubated? Is there anything I need to make sure my surgeon and anesthesiologist understand? -

kjwrn replied to gz345ski's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I imagine the main thing would be no blind NG tubes, but I would just make sure anesthesia and your surgeon know you have had a gastric bypass. I don't really think they would need to put an NG tube down, but just incase they do need to i would let them know. -
Well there are many types of bypass, Roux-en-Y is the one most people think of as bypass, but it's all surgery. Anyway it was just a thought; I'm sure you and your doctor will come up with a plan for you!

Concerned about using lap band only doctor (True Results)
Dave_NW replied to dallasdave's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dave, don't limit yourself to only two choices. There are a few other gastric choices too, most especially the "vertical sleeve gastrectomy." Think of it as something between the band and gastric bypass. With the sleeve, the surgeon removes the stretchy part of your stomach, leaving you with a stomach that is shaped something like a banana. You are forced to eat smaller meals, and you'll lose weight as a result. The advantages: There are no fills required, you can eat whatever you want (in smaller quantities), and your intestinal tract stays complete. If you have a large amount of weight to lose, it may be a good choice for you, especially if you're self-pay. Dave -
Dr. George Zorn III, MD at Scripps in San Diego is phenomenal! He’s been doing the Gastric Bypass surgery for over 20yrs, and has been doing the Sleeve since it was introduced. His knowledge on both surgeries is top notch. I had my surgery on 9/16/2020, and can’t say enough great things about him. If you’re in the area, I completely recommend checking him out. Visit the link to below to read more information on him, as well as see his ratings! https://www.scripps.org/physicians/5717-george-zorn?tab=overview

Need Sample Letter from Primary Care Doc Requesting Band Revision to Sleeve
moviegirl333 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Everyone, I ended up in the ER a few weeks ago after a routine fill on my band, unable to swallow even liquid. My body thought I was choking so it kept sending saliva to my espophagus, with no way for it to go down (completely swollen shut). It was horrible. Radiologist said I need to get it out asap. Primary care doc is not familiar with bands at all and wasn't sure what to write. So I offered to write the letter of request to Cigna for her to put on her letterhead. I've searched everywhere online for a letter that outlines the dangers of leaving the band in, as well as the benefits of replacing it with the sleeve. To no avail. There are plenty of letters about bariatric surgery, but none dealing with the dangers of a failed band. Can anyone direct me? We need to submit something asap. Thanks so much. -

Recommended Reading For A Pre-Sleever?

I am a little over two months out until I have my revision with Dr. Aceves. Are there any books you would recommend and why? I have bought one for my Kindle already called "The Emotional First-Aid Kit: a practical guide to life after bariatric surgery". I have also been checking out "The Gastric Sleeve" by Dr. Garcia (I believe). Any recommendations would be highly appreciated. -
Personality and friendliness aside, where can I details on surgeons such as how many lapbands they have done, percent revisions, etc?

What to look for in a good surgeon?
flowers replied to caeleb's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
There was a thread what to look for in a Mexican surgeon that has many of the basics. Same would apply to any surgeon. I agree, first how many lapbands have they done. Not how many weight loss surgeries, but specificially lap bands. When I went to a seminar they had stats on that they had never had a death, that they had taken steps to cut down on resulting gas and post surgery minor complications. How many incisions will you have. I saw on FOX news that they now have 150 surgeons in the US who will do surgeries thru your mouth, that overweight people recover much faster if they dont have incisions. In addition to lapband, they can do gastric bypass and even gall bladder remover completely through the mouth. One gal posted she had this, but they did one small incision for the camera. Which type of lapband do you want put in. I had my choice. The newer one I was afraid would be harder to get fills for so got the one that had been around longer. Hard to say which is the best choice. I cant remember all the criteria I looked at but these are some of them. -
Dr. St. laurent cypress tx?

I had the band done 5 years ago and lost 80 lbs. In the beginning I always wanted for him to add fills and he wouldn't till I mastered it.I admire this. He takes the time to see you. I have been having problems the last year and I am getting the revision surgery to the sleeve on June 16.I found out he trained some other top band sleeve surgeons. -
Hi there! I'm scheduled for a revision from Lap-Band to gastric bypass on May 19. I have had my band for 5.5 years and have just had too much trouble with it almost the entire time but worse for the last two years, and I'm looking forward to having it out. I initially wanted nothing to do with bypass and thought the band would be my perfect tool but of course didn't anticipate all the negative effects. It took me a while to decide to revise and now it can't come quick enough!! I am most nervous about my port coming out as I've read that it can be quite painful, and it's been sitting in there getting all encapsulated for more than five years, whereas it seems like the majority of revisions are only two-year-old bands. My biggest hurdle will be my Protein shakes. I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners too well and don't really like whey protein, so I've been researching alternatives. I have an egg-white Protein powder and a vegan powder ready to go, which both are highly rated by consumers. I tried a sample egg-white powder and it was far better to me than whey. They are both sweetened with stevia, also better for me personally. I am also planning on purchasing unjury chicken Soup, which is whey but (apparently) better hidden with the savory flavor. Most of my prep is done and I'm just waiting. PS, I'm not too patient!!

Comparing this to post-op Lap Band

My experience after revision was much much better than when I had lapband....but that could be because I was so happy to have the damn band out of my body! -
Third times a charm, surgery in 6 days, need a mentor
India928 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So in short, my story is: Lap band in 2005; gastric sleeve in 2008 and LAST surgery, Bypass scheduled for 9/14/15. Been pretty tough on myself because of the past but still forging forward. Life is short, I don't want to have regrets with anything - so here's to finally working at it. would love a mentor. thank you -
I have been completing my requirements prior to surgery since the end of August, which includes 6 monthly visits of medically supervised weight loss with my surgeon's nurse/bariatric coordinator. My last visit with her is at the beginning of March. After that, assuming all of my other requirements have been met they will put in for approval (which is expected very fast with my particular insurance). I have done a lot of research since even before August about what surgery was right for me and I was convinced it was the sleeve. Liz (the bariatric coordinator) was very honest with me yesterday and said she thought I might not have very good success with the sleeve because I have been struggling to lose weight and definitely have a fondness for sweets. She also said that when she attends the surgeon's office's monthly support group sessions she is kind of jealous that the patients who had RNY seem to have a much greater degree of "control" in their eating. I can certainly use more control in my eating! So now I am seriously questioning my decision and and starting to re-think my plan. I need to decide before 1/31, as I have my appointment with the dietician who will give me a binder full of info and the info varies a bit depending on the type of surgery I choose. I realize that RNY has been around much longer than the sleeve and that the sleeve was originally intended to just be the first step in duodenal switch surgeries for 500+ lb. patients. However, the re-routing of the intestine freaks me out quite a bit and I am afraid of nutritional deficiencies caused by the malabsorptive aspect of the RNY surgery. I'm thinking I should just go with my "gut" and get sleeved, but just wondered if anyone here regretted getting the VSG and wished they had gotten a bypass instead. Any comments would be appreciated!

Bariatric coordinator thinks RNY would be better for me. What to do?!
TheOldMeAgain replied to Scylla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My sister had the bypass. She does get dumping but it doesn't stop her from eating sweets. I guess the same way WLS won't help anyone long term if your not committed to a Lifestyle Change. You'll just find ways around it by ignoring the bad side effects of eating sugary and greasy foods. No matter what I say to my sister about how she shouldn't be eating certain things she tell me to mind my business. Please don't let that be your only reason for wanting RNY. There always a way around things. -
Dad is thinking of getting sleeved, any advice I should give him
Pinkgirl1234 replied to pickle25's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Make sure dad goes to the most experienced surgeon. He needs to talk to his dr.Do the research and get it done.I had revision to bypass and I am so happy. -
Hi Jill, Have you done anything about the surgery yet? Dr. Forbes is leaving the practice and moving to NC. So Posner and Hoffman who are excellent and have wonderful stats are becoming overwhelmed with new patients. Even if you are still on the fence I would consider looking into filling an application. It is a lengthy procedure involving Psych evaluation and diet before you are accepted so you have time to back out. My surgery is October 13th. I do not need to loose a lot of weight (maybe 60 lbs) but I am doing it to be healthier and "cure" my diabetes, stomach problems, high BP, etc. Besides being down to only two doctors the band is really becoming popular and is much safer than Gastric Bypass Surgery. If you put in an application you will be invited to a seminar where they explain everything about both surgerys including mortality rates. I believe Sisters hospital has a program also and there is one in Buffalo called Synergy Bariatics. Good Luck.

Dad is thinking of getting sleeved, any advice I should give him
pickle25 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was sleeved 19/10/15 and I've bee absolutely dropping the weight with some pretty troubling side effects, but mostly doing ok. My dad is now made up that he's finally going to bite the bullet and also be sleeved. We've talked about it a fair bit and he's been put off by issues I've had. I've stuck on the path of this has really changed my life in so many ways and I don't regret it at all, although there's been negatives it's better than dying of a heart attack, and that it gives me the restriction I need to succeed. Dad hasn't been well. He's 170+ kgs and has had a few heart attacks. I'm not sure he'll make 60. He has lost up to 20kgs before on his own and is happy to exercise, but finds food restriction the hardest. We are both terrible coke drinkers. And fast food addicts. My surgeon operates locally but is mainly at another hospital 50 mins away. I went to him because originally I was considering bypass and the local one didn't do bypass. Do you think it's better to stick to someone we know or try another person? I didn't like that he wasn't contactable when I had a problem with my sutures, another thing that put dad off. Also I'm young, Dad isn't. For me it's been about getting to enjoy my life before it passes me by and to be healthy for my daughter. Dad doesn't mind being fat. He does love food though. Any over 45's have anything to offer? Any help I can get would be appreciated. I don't want to loose my Dad, and Idont want him to be scared. -
Do what it right for you. You have to live with the decision. My surgeon makes it the patients decision. That being said I feel the sleeve is the best approach. You can always get the bypass later. There are less side effects with the sleeve choose carefully.

Oh cowgirlJane, any advice for me. I'd like to be just as successful as you. The reason I wanted the gastric is because after reading about others experience post revision , I didn't think one could lose all if the weight. But you've inspired me. Can you give me the date in which you has the revision , how long it took. Etc. thank you
