Soft food stage. When you go out to dinner, what do you get?
cindymg replied to Crissigus's topic in Food and Nutrition
Mashed potatoes, soft moist chicken (Boston Market is good for this), plain Greek yogurt with s/f preserves, cottage cheese, string cheese, moist ground beef, moist turkey, eggs any way, s/f pudding, any kind of cream soup (Panera Bread broccoli cheese soup with tiny bits of their chicken dropped in makes a nice protein packed meal), cream of wheat. -
I think you need a Protein burst. Do you have Greek yogurt? I mix the plain with sugar-free blueberry preserves and some Splenda. Gets me protein and a little fruit sugar at the same time. Or you could do the same with cottage cheese. I know. Not the same as a snickers bar, but it is long-lasting energy, not that quick high with a dramatic thud in about an hour. Plus for me sugar is a trigger food. I don't want just one sugar thing -- I suddenly find myself wanting all sugar things. Hang in there and Good luck on your journey. It's going to be amazing!

Walking Girl's VSG Story :)
walkinggirl replied to walkinggirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Just checking in! I am now 8 days post op. And guess what? The scale still hasn't moved since I got home from the hospital 6 days ago. Good grief, someone take this scale away from me! Surely it has to move some time! I am following the diet to a T, so it has to happen eventually. Keeping the faith Other than that, my stomach rumbles and grumbles are continuing. I *think* I have concluded that it isn't really hunger pains -- that it is a spasm of some sort. It seems to happen more when I am eating something a little thicker like yogurt vs. a liquid. That's all for now. Feeling really good and stomach soreness is all but gone, which is a huge help. -
If yogurt works for you, I recommend FAGE 0% and add your own fruit to it. It a really high protein boost. One cup has 23 grams of protein. then just focus on increasing your water. Those 2 small changes might help and adding your own fruit to the mix keeps the sugar amount low.

A typical day in the life?
pinkdots410 replied to LastOptionAtty's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
A day in the life for me is: I usually skip Breakfast or have a yogurt if I get hungry. I am typically not hungry until around noon...but I like to have *something* before then. I currently am on fill number 5 and I am really tight! I am even contemplating an unfill...as I have to eat slow and chew really really well...My days generally look like (samples of what I'll have): Day one - Breakfast - oatmeal and Water or coffee Snack - yogurt, a few mini pretzels lunch - soup and a cheese stick Snack - a few pretzels and cheese stick dinner - a small portion of whatever my husband makes... (usually meat and veggies of some sort) and/or Protein shake Snack - sherbet Day two - Breakfast - Protein Shake and water Snack - yogurt Lunch - grilled chicken and gravy Snack - orange juice and cheese stick Dinner - grilled chiken and gravy Snack - sherbet On the weekends, I splurge a little and have a few bites of "junk food" - pizza, cheesesteaks, subs...MIND YOU - I mean literally 1 or 2 bites...it either gets stuck and comes back up, OR I don't have an interest...my mindset about food has changed soooo much. It's really crazy! (in a good way) Rules for me are - as much protein as possible. I have to have my meat with some type of broth or gravy or it gets stuck and comes right back up! So I try to get good sources of protein in there and be sure to take my Vitamin. I wish you the best of luck!! Feel free to ask any questions! -
Soooo... I'm 4 months post op (11/04/15) and although per my nutritionist and surgeon I'm cleared to eat regular textures, I can't. I'm so frustrated with eating and chewing everything till mush. I haven't had a hot meal since I got banded. By the time I chew something up my food is cold and is even less appetizing. I'm so restricted it's depressing. Everything gets stuck . Big or small, liquid or solid...it gets stuck. My band is empty. I've never been adjusted. ..no need. I'm restricted just with the band placement. A meal should be between 4-6 oz but I'm stuck at about 2. I can keep fluids down but it takes forever to eat or drink anything. I saw my surgeon and he says that my band does appear to be tight but he can't empty it. There's nothing to remove. I admit that at times I still eat 2 fast or don't chew enough but whether I do or not everything gets stuck. I stick to Protein shakes, yogurt and other soft stuff at work cause I can't run off to vomit every few minutes till the blockage is gone. Which brings me to the wicked acid reflux. GERD sucks. On a lighter note...I'm down 57lbs. Sent from my SM-N910P using the BariatricPal App

My doc didn't want me worrying about Protein right after surgery. He was more concerned about Fluid intake. I went home on Clear liquids and super soft foods (cream of wheat, yogurt, Soup etc). At my 2 week post op appointment is when they started stressing increasing my protein. I didn't have much trouble with gas (try GasX - I heard that helps a lot of WLS patients), but I did not have a BM for quite a few days after surgery. I started adding Benefiber to drinks and broth to help - and it did! If you are concerned with anything post op - call your doc! That's what they are there for!! Hope you get some relief soon!

I had frozen yogurt today from red mango (I figured not so bad) but now I feel like it was a gateway food. I can't stop thinking about fatty fried foods . I'm hoping after my protein shake and some sleep the cravings will go away

1 Week Down!
JustJaime5 replied to anewbeginning12414's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
That's great news!! I was sleeved dec 9 and struggling a bit. No medical complications- thank god! Just some mental ones. I have not lost any weight at all. Literally!! In fact I'm still a few pounds heavier than my surgery date weight! How is that even possible? I've been on Nothing but the clear and full liquid phase. ( pudding, yogurt and soups) I don't know how I'm going to stay on this phase until dec 23 when I'm supposed to start soft/puréed foods. I'm just a bit frustrated. I have lost more weight on my own before the surgery while eating more than I've lost this last week eating nothing. I feel hungry which I've read is the acid so I'm getting back to taking my Nexium. I get about 50 grams of Protein a day and about 50 oz of Water. I know I need to up both but it's been so hard to get the Protein powder down. I need to go buy some ready made shakes tomorrow. -
Girl all I know is my family is sitting here eating stuffed pizza and I'm eating a plain Greek yogurt with blueberries... And tomorrow I will weight the same I'm sure... I hit 171 and I stay there or go up a pound or two on a daily basis for a month now.. I'm getting a treadmill on Thursday. Maybe if I just walk all day on it I'll start losing again..

This is my 11th day post-op. I feel great. I decided to try green beans, mash potato with gravy and slowly enjoyed it. Felt burst of energy, then walked 1 mile. I think soft is good with my yogurt.

Travel exactly one month post op
Mzerica619 replied to Mzerica619's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my sleeve surgery 1/20/16 and I took a 3 day trip to Las Vegas on 2/11/16 (3 weeks post op). Now, I know everyone recovers differently but I was completely useless for the first 2.5weeks. I was worried about taking my trip but started to get some energy back a couple days before I left. I completely understand what you're going through. I apologize in advance, this may be lengthy, especially since it's fresh in my mind. I think the most difficult thing is going to be food. At three weeks I was supposed to be on a puréed diet. That was incredibly difficult while traveling!!! I am having trouble with Protein shakes post op, no matter what I try I just can't stomach them. That would have been my go to, but I just couldn't do it. I ate mostly yogurt and eggs and those 1 oz packages of peanut or almond butter (I can't remember the brand. It's all natural, no sugars or anything). But, I also ate things that weren't puréed. I didn't have a choice in some places. There just aren't many options on a puréed diet. I did get sick once from eating 2 French fries. I just didn't want to spend so much money on an entire meal when I really shouldn't have been eating any of the foods they had to offer and would only be able to eat a couple bites anyway, and I figured French fries were soft so I just took a couple from someone else's plate. Not a good idea! No more fried things for me!! It didn't help that our hotel room didn't have a fridge or anything, so I couldn't buy yogurts or anything to keep in the room. I did, however, make sure I had a Water bottle on me at all times. I'm not sure what stage of the diet you will be on during your trip, but I would definitely consider what your options would be. As far as rescheduling your trip, and I'm assuming that this is just for pleasure since you're wondering about postponing, I would do some research online or by phone. Look at where you will be staying and local restaurants and any outings you have planned. Most places offer menus online, try to find things that will work for your diet. Even call them and see if they will be accommodating. Also, look at who you will be traveling with. Do they know about your surgery and diet restrictions? Are they going to be supportive and understanding? I think if you will be able to find foods that will fit your diet you will be fine. I had energy back by that point and besides having trouble with food, I had a phenomenal trip. Good luck with your surgery and have fun in Hawaii! Thanks for the information... As I was reading your post I called my BF and told him we are not rescheduling! The room we are staying in had a full kitchen so I will be able to keep The yogurts on hand. I will definitely be checking the surrounding areas now that you mentioned the online menus! THANKS FOR THE GREAT ADVICE ???????????????????? -
Thanksgiving Is Depressing For Me!!!!!!!!!!!
CherylB replied to apinksoprano's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi, Yes, I had a smoothie this morning, I used 8 oz. skim milk, 1/3 cup frozen blueberries, 1/2 container blueberry yogurt, and 1 scoop of unjury vanilla Protein powder. I put it in my magic bullet and it was very good! Then I got a stomach ache....I guess my stomach didn't like waking up that way! When you say you make a shake with Muscle Milk, how do you do it? I've seen it on our grocery store shelf. I guess at this stage, I don't know how much to drink in a day. My original paperwork said Slim Fast for 3 meals, but yuck! I was nauseous all day after drinking ONE. So I tried Unjury and liked it MUCH better. I'll try anything, since I have 2 more weeks of liquids to go AFTER banding. Thanks for your response. -
Hi VSG community. Today is my 2 week anniversary & my first post
Indymom replied to Shore Bird's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
This early out, your stomach is still "numb" from surgery and you may not feel full. It's very important to measure everything and be strict based upon your surgeon's program. At 2 weeks out I was still on purees and liquids only, so I wasn't yet eating eggs (everyone's plan is different). I was on 2 oz of purees/liquids at that time so I was eating only cottage cheese, yogurt, etc. At this point post-op you don't want to stress your stomach due to your healing staple line, so I would recommend measuring everything religiously. -
Try isopure. Also sometimes I mix my protein with sf jello prepared pudding and sometimes I add pb2. Also try experimenting wtih shakes. You can use sf ff instant pudding mixes or sf syrups, pb2 or even yogurt. Protein is very important from now on. Of course by the time you get to mushy and solids you really need to be eating your protein not drinking it.

Hello Everyone; I have been searching for answers and ran across this site while surfing the web. My story: I am 52, divorced, have raised 4 children and am a Family Practice physician. The year my life became very stressful (1998) I gained 100 lbs. That was the year I chose to let my husband leave the family (he had another "love"), I was accepted into medical school and moved the 4 kids to a new home, in a city where I had no friends or family and no employment. Yes, STRESS will cause one to gain weight. At that time I couldn't focus on my body and had to get through every day one at a time. Now fast forward 15 years: I have had a successful career as a physician, raised 4 wonderful children who are all now married and living good lives and am now an "empty nester". I decided it was time to focus on my health and weight. I always felt awkward telling my patients they needed to loose weight when I was overweight as well. 3 years ago I started working on my weight and was able to loose 65 lbs with a low carb diet & exercise. My weight stalled at 198 lbs but I felt better than I had in years. I knew stress was a factor in the plateau (I was "retiring" and closed my clinic since the economy was chipping away at my income as the sole proprietor.) I took a year off of "dieting" and went to work for a cruise line to travel and see the sights. I managed to maintain the weight loss for the most part (gained 10 lbs while cruising) and exercised an hour daily on the ship. Then my grandmother was placed on Hospice for back pain from crushed vertebrae (she was 90 years old) I quit my job with the cruise line and came home to be around for my parents and grandmother. Then my mother had her 4th heart attack. More stress and a new PCP (primary care provider) that insisted on messing with my thyroid medication caused me to gain all the weight back (265 again). I commented to the PCP that he should have listened to me (I am a physician after all and know my medical history) and his solution was to suggest bariatric surgery. The funny part is that I have recommended this to many of my patients and never thought about it as an option for myself. I believed that carful healthy diet and exercise would work again. My concern was "stress" seemed to be the bane of my existence and I would never loose weight when stressed. I researched the options (medical web search), had the PCP office request the prior auth and then met with the surgeon to set the date for surgery. Since I had the records from my weight loss progress and my PCP provided the weight gain record (I gained the weight back over 3 months) The auth for surgery was approved. I had a vertical sleeve procedure May 29th this year. My pre-op diet started the weight loss (incidentally the pre-op diet was similar to the low carb diet I had followed previously) and I lost 13.5 lbs the 2 weeks prior to the surgery. I also had my gallbladder out at the same time and the surgeon performed both procedures by a new technique using a "spider instrument" which was through one umbilical port (so only one incision!) My hospital stay was prolonged by a day because of the additional procedure. I have not been able to take in more than 3-4 oz at one time since the surgery. I thought this was normal and didn't ask questions about this until my weight loss stalled. At 7 weeks post surgery I hit my first plateau. I was following the diet to the letter (2 Protein shakes and one "meal" of protein, soft meats & cooked veggies) I would mix the shakes so the 3 oz had 25 gm of protein and would create a Soup that had at least 10 gms of protein in the 1/2 cup of soup. I was taking in 48-60 oz of Water each day and my exercise routine included walking my 2 dogs (a bull mastiff puppy and an 18 month lab/heeler mix) 2-3 times a day (60 to 90 min) and swim laps for 30-45 min when the weather cooperates. My surgeons response was I was eating too much! He wanted me to cut back to 50-55 gms of protein. Now I know the protein is the main measure but the calorie count of my meals was under 500 calories. He stated that didn't matter. I followed his advise for the next week but still did not loose any weight. That was the last time I went to his office. I have increased my intake by adjusting the shakes (still 3 oz) to 10 gm each and increasing the intake to 3 shakes, "lunch" (the soups), a snack of either cottage cheese, yogurt or string cheese (1-2 oz for a snack) This has increased my calories to around 750-800, my protein intake is 55-60 gm daily and I am slowly starting to loose weight again. I average 1 lb loss a week over the past month. So this is my story and I am looking for others to build a support system since I am on my own (my choice)

So jealous you got to eat an egg so soon! I was sleeved on 10/14 and cant have eggs until week 5! 4 more weeks from today! My surgeon allows only liquids (including sugar free pudding & yogurt) for weeks 1 & 2. The weeks 3&4 can add cottage cheese and blended oatmeal. Week 5 is soft scrambled eggs and soft Proteins like tina fish.... I'm not hungry - but I am so sick and tired of Soup and drinking and cold things! Down almost 20lbs since pre-surgery (Clear Liquids for 3 full days)...I had the band before so I become quite used to small portions, etc...band slipped so I converted it. I'm so looking forward to hot food that is NOT soup related - I'm about to lose my mind!!!!!!

This is such a popular question on here that I have decided to share my own Protein shake recipes with fellow Bandsters. Jay Robb's whey Protein (vanilla) from Whole Foods Market (seems to be the absolute best tasting and I heard one of the most popular. It also has 25 grams of protein per scoop! It's the only kind I ever use now. Not only for the taste, but because he uses what I feel to be a better alternative sweeter called Stevia in it, instead of Aspartame. ENJOY!!! J’s High Protein Full liquid Recipes PHASE 2: Full liquid diet This starts 1 day after surgery NOTE: On the Full Liquid Diet, up to 6-8oz per meal is OK for 3-6 meals a day with lots of Water and mini 2-4oz Snacks in between (snacks are optional, but can create slower weight loss). Make sure to drink LOTS of water. The bulk of your fullness should be water. Stop before feeling full. I am consistently losing weight with these measurements. Remember to drink or eat very slowly. You can train yourself by using tiny baby spoons. The point of this 6 week plan, I am told is partly to shrink your stomach and get you prepared for the first band tightening where you will be limited to very tiny amounts. The doc wants you to get bored of these foods, because after the 6 weeks, you go strictly to solids and water. No more mushy or liquids. All of my recipes include ingredients that can be found at most Whole Foods Markets, Trader Joes or Meijers Grocery. Organic products are all optional, but I (from recent experience) highly recommend for those wanting a more rapid weight loss or healthier system in general. Using skim milk over cream or any other dairy milk will speed it up as well. The nut milks are a great way to sneak in even more nutrients. Most grocery stores carry these organic products now, but you have to look for them. *All my high fat recipes include only healthy or beneficial fats that have not been processed and do not include any hydrogenated oils. Please check the nutrition labels before purchasing any ingredients.* My Personal Tips for More Rapid Weight Loss Using the Liquid Recipes: 1. Use my snack recipes only once a day 2. Choose only my low fat options from my recipe list 3. Stay under 1000 calories. 4. Minimize the amount of sweetener used 5. Choose a Superfoods recipe at least once per day 6. Hello -- new to the website

JoJo, I can have blended fat free cream soups, apple sauce, and yogurt.. Trust me my Protein Drink are starting to make me gag. My stomach also grumbles a lot too. And I also feel hungry a lot. I can't wait till the next diet stage. I am looking forward to pretzels lol. Hi Lisa, Thanks for replying! Yeah, this phase has turned out to be much harder than I thought. I wouldn't mind the all liquid thing as much if I could have some non-sweet stuff other than low sodium broth. I just hate sweets so I'm literally gagging every time I drink this stuff, and I can only stomach the vanilla flavor so it's getting old quick and I don't know how I'll be able to do for another week. I'm also confused because it seems other people on here have Dr's who tell them they can have other soups during this phase, or move past this phase quicker, so I don't know what's the right thing to do anymore. Starve or eat something that other recovering Lap-banders had and were fine? I'm trying to think positive as you said and about the end result, but it's just rough when your stomach is grumbling all the time and the only thing you can eat makes you nauseous. As for the hospital, I plan on writing all of this stuff on the survey they send post-ops. -
The sheet they gave me says full liquds/mushies on the page that lists the foods I listed above. I think they consider full liquids and mushies to be the same. On my first phase of liquids, I got pudding, yogurt and baby food fruit. Seems to me those would be more mushies than liquids. I don't know.....doesn't matter, I was just curious.

I am three weeks out tomorrow and can tell you that once you get to the purée, cottage cheese, refried Beans, yogurts, etc. you will feel much better. I now eat something, 4 oz or less every 2 1/2 to 3 hours. I'm mostly hungry first thing in the morning but I think it's because of the large number of hours without food. I sip a lot of Water and try to use Protein supplements in the water. There are many flavors available. Good luck, be patient! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am 10 months out. I eat a lot of protein but add in fruits and veggies. Every morning a eat a banana/strawberry smoothie or small yogurt. I notice that I don't lose much weight for the week or month if I have eaten bread products or potatoes. If I go back to just eating meat, fruits and veggies, I will drop again. I would be happy to give you recipes for food options if you need help. Just send me a message.
