Hello, I'm super excited to be approved for revision wls from VSG to Gastric Bypass. I'm 2 years and 1 month post op from VSG. About 1 1/2 years from surgery, I have started experiencing GERD. I did have my hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as my sleeve but the stinky hernia and GERD has come back. I'm currently 24 pounds to being within a normal BMI. I was approved super quick for revision. I've tried 40 mg of ppi but my body wasn't having it to control my acid reflux. Eventually, I'm taking 2 ppi pills with some relief. Anyway, the purpose of this post is Do you think I would be up to traveling on airplane 10 days post op from revision surgery? My flight will be 8 1/2 hours. My recovery from VSG was wonderful. No pain, I had to question my surgeon if he'd performed my surgery as I was walking laps around the nurse's station and was able down all my fluids. I'm praying my recovery from revision surgery is similar to my first. Thank you

Hi All, So in due diligence, I've been researching protein shakes and drinks. I haven't had surgery yet, but I'm trying to start training myself to drink consistently throughout the day and to start steering away from not eating most days until 2 PM or later. While at Target this weekend, I noticed that they had the Protein 2o in mixed berry and picked some up. They're not half bad actually. They do seem to make my mouth dry when I first take a sip, but I think that's just a matter of getting used to it and I actually enjoy the overall flavor. Back when I had my lapband sx in 2007 pretty much all I had available to me were the milky, overly sweet type of protein shakes and I loathed them after being on liquids for so many weeks pre/post-surgery. So, I am quite encouraged by the juice type drinks. Which leads me to my question. Given that the protein shake market has gotten so much more expansive in the past 12 years, I'm confused by what seems to be 2 different labeled shakes. Some say Protein "meal replacement" like the Bariatricpal protein One and others like Genepro and Syntrax just say protein powder. I've tried reading the labels and I don't see much difference in the two types. Although I will say that I thought it was rather shady of Syntrax to advertise that their protein individual pack will provide 23 grams of protein, only to read the label and see that a serving size is 1/4 of a packet, so you have to multiply everything by 4 to get to 1. the amount of protein they advertise and 2. the actual calories in each pack. So that's my questions Bariatricpal world: is there a difference in meal replacement shakes and the ones just labeled protein powder Which do you use? Also, since you're here, if you've had bypass and you're greater than say 5 months out, how many of you are still drinking protein shakes as a regular part of your diet, even if just one meal, say breakfast. Thanks for your help!

I have a FDL and it's healing really well. I also had a ton of skin above my navel and a regular TT wouldn't have taken care of it at all. I'm actually having it revised in my next surgery to take more/extend it a little higher as I still have loose skin there even with the first FDL. I can't easily post pics from my work computer, but I can later if that would be helpful. As far as needing help, I think after a couple days you should really be okay especially without any muscle repair. Just take it very easy.

Revision surgery after gastric bypass surgery
dmsteele83 replied to RhondaRob's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had gastric bypass in 2004 didn’t make it to my goal but was pretty close and I was happy I maintained 150/160lbs for years even through a second pregnancy but in the last 3 years my mother almost died and I gained 100lbs. July 2 2019 I had a revision I had the lap band over gastric bypass. With the first 2 weeks I lost 17lbs and only 3 pounds since then. I feel like it’s coming off too slow. I have graduated to soft foods but feel like I’m eating too much so I put myself back on only clear liquids and protein drinks. I go for my first band tightening on Aug. 9th hopefully weight will come off more after that. Are there many people who have had the lap band over the gastric bypass? -
That's awesome yours went away!! I was looking into the sleeve, but after doing some research and talking to my Dr it looks like bypass is my best option. I've heard/read that the sleeve can make GERD much worse. Keep up the amazing work on your journey.

My doctor doesn't let his patients start on the pureed stage until Weeks 3 - 4. The amount of calories he expects us to max out at due to our restriction (mine was a bypass) roughly works out to around the same amount the Mom_of_Chaos mentioned. If your doctor gave you a post op diet to follow, I'd check to see if the calories were supposed to be limited. If it is not clear, but sure to call your doctor's office and ask. I know the first 3 to 5 weeks after surgery is a time of healing and adapting so I'd ask sooner rather than later about the number of calories you can consume, but that is just my own thought. At least you would have peace of mind based on checking. Best of luck!

My doctor is okay with wine/carbonation 7 weeks out (in moderation of course). He also doesn’t believe in addiction transfers! I’m bypass btw!

Recent revision here 😍 I was told that colace and miralax will help for daily relief but to contact the Team if its been longer than 3 days with no bowel movement. Contact yours to find out what you can have for this acute situation since its been so long. Good Luck 💜 -
I’m scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday, July 30th, revision from VSG to RNY, due to GERD and not losing enough weight with the sleeve. Sleeve was done on March 2018, I had a smooth recovery with the first surgery, hoping the same will happen this time and to feel like a human being again, acid reflux is not a joke. Wishing everybody on this journey the best wishes and results.

I found this the other day and I think it will be very helpful to me, and I hope to those here. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-big-gastric-bypass-diet-guide/

I am 6 days out from sleeve to rny revision & still have not pooped. I am finally passing gas, but I do not feel any urge to have a bowel movement. I have been taking Dulcolax stool softener a couple times a day, but still nothing. Was wondering if MOM or Mirilax is the way to go? I am also having a sharp pain under by left breast/rib cage. Hurts to take a deep breath. Anyone else experience this?

Nervous! Sleeve to RNY revision tomorrow 😳
newlady1 replied to GingerSlim's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Everyone, I just had revision surgery on Thursday, July 25th for the same symptoms, GERD, hiatal hernia. Stayed in the hospital 2 nights and my biggest discomfort was the soreness in my throat from the throat tube during surgery. OMG i couldn't talk or swallow, so drinking water or soup broth was very painful. It's been 2 days and the pain has subsided significantly, so i'm finally getting my fluids in. I feel blessed and can't wait to see the results of the weight loss. Good luck and God bless you during this part of your journey. -
SEPTEMBER 2018 SURGERIES AND SUCCESS
MMME replied to Frustr8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well, exactly 9 months from my bypass and today I not only reached my goal but surpassed it. My surgeon said I'd be 70 kg but I said 69 (just to be stubborn and do better than he wanted). Today I was 68.8 when I stepped on the scale. -
Lap band revision
JasonSWrench replied to DeeTee's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello All! I'm glad to see that there are a few of us having this conversation. I just remet with the surgeon yesterday to discuss a lap-band revision. And I'm experiencing the same insurance issues that DeeTee mentioned. I've had my band for almost 11 years (hard to believe). Basically, my surgeon is treating me like a new patient for surgical purposes. I have to show six months of weight loss supervision, go through a bunch of tests, see the psychologist, talk to the dietician, and so on, and so on. Last time I basically started in July had had the surgery in September. I talked to the surgeon about switching to either the sleeve or the bypass. His recommendation, since I don't have diabetes, was to go with the sleeve. I'd done the research ahead of time and had come to this decision, but it was nice to at least hear the surgeon supporting my basic decision. Like Banded in AZ, I also have experienced esophageal problems, specifically esophageal dilation. Honestly, I didn't know that was even a complication. Admittedly, I had been a bad bander and hadn't had an adjustment in quite some time. The surgeon actually gave me an adjustment yesterday, which was weird, and he took out quite a bit of liquid. Apparently, food was just sitting in my esophagus and slowing getting squeezed through the band for years. I'm also the first to admit that I feel like some kind of band failure. It's like one of the docs in the practice always says, they don't have a lap-band for your brain. I learned how to eat around the band so quickly. Combine that with most of my favorite foods seem to be mushy to begin with, and it just set me up for band problems. Part of me still thinks I should give the lap-band a chance, but then it's been 11 years. My surgeons don't even perform that many lap-bands anymore because of how bad the outcomes research is now. As for those of you who have made the switch, has weight loss been "easier" with the sleeve? I'm primarily worried about long-term weight loss, stretching, and GERD. What are people's experiences? Protein Blend with Casein
Darktowerdream replied to csmccord's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think it refers to a protein that’s 80% casein. I don’t think 100% isolate is good either. https://www.thenutritiondr.com/single-post/2018/12/20/What-Protein-is-Best-after-Gastric-ByPass-Surgery This is the protein I use. I don’t know the percentages but they put a lot of research into their products, even when it comes to flavors. https://pescience.com/collections/all/products/select-protein?variant=185086083098 this is a bit confusing to me, maybe more because of how tired I am. I know it’s not the highest protein per portion it’s 24 grams so I use 6 ounces plant protein milk to make it 30 grams. I find it oddly contradicting that my nutritionist says use skim milk when it’s very high in sugar, even fairlife is 6 grams. But she says no more than 4 grams of sugar in a meal. A lot of people can’t tolerate dairy after surgery. The non dairy milk I use is zero sugar. The protein depends on flavor but 2 grams or most are less than one gram of sugar the same for carbs. Peanut butter cookie is 2 carbs, and cookies and cream is less than one. -
July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
LeSuzane replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 5 days post-op revision surgery from VGS (7/2015) to a Gastric Bypass after gaining 27 pounds on 7/23. Never posted on BP but am going to try to reach out more this time around. I had a hiatal hernia fixed during my 2015 sleeve surgery and it came back; so I also had hernia surgery 7/23 as well. I am on my feet and feeling far better this time around than when I got my VGS...yay! But I’m also feeling far hungrier :( -
Just starting journey band to bypass
Deedee12 replied to loridee24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello LeeAnn, I had my lapband removed May 3rd and it was the easiest surgery ever. I had it removed on a Friday and I was at work on Sunday without any pain or discomfort. I didn't need any pain pills after discharge from hospital.....I may have used Ibuprofen once on day of discharge. It was a 45 mins procedure from being wheeled into the OR to the recovery room and I was home by 1pm. I only had to by "nothing by mouth" for 8hrs prior to surgery. No special diet after the removal and I have been happy and free from the band since then!!! My Sleeve surgery is scheduled for August 16th and I can't wait!! The insurance approval for removal and revision took such a short time that even the surgeon was shocked! I chose to see the dietitian and psychologist voluntarily while I wait so I can be sure I get help with preparation! Good luck to us all![emoji169][emoji169][emoji169][emoji169][emoji169] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I dunno. I've read that bypassers especially don't digest the casein protein and so we need all isolate. But quite honestly the best protein sub is the one you can get down consistently. And not hurl from. Right? I'm just so thankful to be on the other side of that one and hope not to need to be pure protein drinks for weeks on end again. I would just honestly find ones you like and drink those and if worried, then up consumption to go toward a max protein load like 80-100g per day of protein rather than 60-80g as a female? The doc does protein levels on you including albumen and if they suspect issues, then pre-albumin which should catch any issues. And as soon as you the doc says, start replacing most of your protein with food sources. Oh and I love: Premier Protein (chocolate, bananas and cream, vanilla, caramel) Isopure (bananas and cream, dutch chocolate, vanilla) Synthrax Nectar (lemon iced tea, grapefruit, fuzzy navel) Cheers and good luck hon!

Just starting journey band to bypass
loridee24 replied to loridee24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Good luck with your band removal. I'm still waiting for the surgery to be scheduled, but the doctor said if I didn't hear by yesterday I should call Monday so I'll do that. I may be just a few weeks behind you in the removal. In addition to band removal and 3 months of healing, the doctor wants me to lose 30 pounds before my bypass. I understand and am determined to do that but am finding it harder to start than I expected. I'm going to put up a bunch of pictures of me doing things I love to do that I haven't been doing because of my weight (pics are largely from when I lost the weight with the band) and see if that helps motivate me. Anyone have any other tips? Lori -

Just starting journey band to bypass
LeeAnnfromNC replied to loridee24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My experience is similar to yours. I had my lap band put in six years ago. Did great for three years then hit a plateau. The photo of me here is at my lowest weight after having lost 98 pounds with my band. I never could get the two pounds I needed for 100 pounds off ...and I wanted to lose around 25 - 20 more. Over time I started gaining weight and having problems with food getting stuck, reflux, etc. Doc took some fluid out of my band. Still had bloating and abdominal pain. This has been going on for more than six months. After having a barium swallow, 2 endoscopies, a CAT scan, MRI, and colonoscopy we have pretty much determined that there is nothing else wrong so the band is most likely the culprit. I will be having surgery to remove it on Wed, July 31. Hopefully that will end the abdominal pain and I will be able to have revision to another weight loss surgery in a couple of months. I am still down 40 pounds from where I started which means I gained back 58 that I need to lose again and still want to lose that additional 15 - 20 pounds to get to my goal. I wish we could do it all in one surgery but my doc wants to make sure the removal of the band solves the problems I've been having instead of doing additional surgery now only to find that the pain issues are still there. I'm 99% sure the problem is the band so I'm researching other surgical options now while I wait. ****For those of you who have had their bands removed , did you have internal soreness from the surgery or just the soreness from the incisions ? Did you have to follow any special diet while healing from the removal of the lap band ?
