HELP! 7 YR POST OP WASTING BAD LABS HOW TO RECOVER?
Violet P replied to Violet P's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Oh, just remembered. was told by experienced bariatric surgeon that did my revision to keep my protein uptake at 60 grams daily, low sugar to prevent dumping. I tolerate sugar fine, only one episode years ago, ate way too much at Christmas. I'm drinking Premier Protein Shakes, can get them down and they taste okay to me. Wonder if I should add a glass of full fat milk daily, I might could get it down, if I split it up. I try to eat a few bites of full fat cottage cheese. I can't even get down a small frozen meal, such as Atkins, etc. Tried this morning, ate about 4 bites and spit it out. I know I need therapy, my husband died in 2014 from cancer, then my only son who was heroin addict in 2015, committed suicide 2015. I am overwhelmed with unresolved grief...but that can take years to solve I need help with getting the best nutrition to be focused enough and well enough to even drive to therapy. Get my drift? I need a registered dietician in bypass patients who are experiencing my specific condition, and take my health issues/age, and the fact I live alone, and find it even hard to get to store, etc. I'm overwhelmed to say the least. Just wanting first step. Getting medical care, but she really doesn't know best core diet to recover from this. -
Gastric-Bypass, hypoglycemia and Naltrexone?
OKCPirate posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The moodswing for a woman of 26 years with Gastric-Bypass was caused by a drop of the blood-sugar-level, they call it hypoglycemia. She sometimes get those low level and the she becomes irritated, faint in the head, and starts sweating. After taking Naltrexone she gets the same moodswing, but no sweating. Now she takes the Naltrexone with quick sugar of grapes and … tadaa : OK ! Naltrexone and Hypoglycemia are connected : https://www.researchgate.net/publication/281644521_Naltrexone_for_treatment_of_impaired_awareness_of_hypoglycemia_in_type_1_diabetes_A_randomized_clinical_trial https://www.google.be/search?q=naltrexone+blood+sugar&ie=&oe=#q=naltrexone%20hypoglycemia Has anyone else had this problem? What an interesting solution to the sweating issue. -
What procedure are you considering? You will DEFINITELY lose weight with bypass and sleeve because those will permanently decrease the size of your stomach. The lap band is dependent on you getting the fills done when you need to. Now, with each of the procedures there is a post surgery diet that needs to be followed. No drinking while eating, also. Is anyone else a LAP band to bypass patient? I'd love to connect with someone else who is having surgery around the same time. Mine is Sept 15th.

It will all be ok. Be glad you have a good & careful surgeon! I may be in the same boat on Wednesday. That's always the risk with revision! My prayers are with you for a quick removal recovery. Time to focus on your basics! You can DO this! ???? 3 mos will go fast!!

I'm so sorry to hear that. I am having surgery tomorrow the 16th and might be in your boat. I've had my band for 9 years and am so concerned that I will have to wait another three months to have the bypass. Even if they can't do it all tomorrow, I will be thrilled to get my band out. Hang in there.

My dr put me on an acid reducer from the day I left the hospital & am taking it for 2 months, when I asked why he said it was because reflux was common after bypass! Maybe ask your Dr about that too!I'm so nervous every time I eat, I'm on mushy food now and it's like heaven, I was so sick of liquids!!!

Panic mode venting, surgery soon. Is this normal?
meyouus posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's three weeks till the big RNY. I thought I had it together, perhaps not? I don't have the pre-op liquid prep that most do. I'm doing my lung function test tomorrow which I'm scared of. I had pneumonia in late April, then again in early to mid May. The pneumonia is gone, but the cough still remains, for the most part. I have gurgling in my throat, possibly from all the post-nasal drip I keep swallowing. So I PRAY I pass! Im ending my second bottle of Prednisone. And I have been SO FREAKIN hungry! I have lost little since my second NUT visit and I fear pissing off my surgeon. I WANT to eat like there's no tomorrow. Could be side effect of Prednisone? But definitely a panic response. I was SO set and educated about the lifestyle change, And did it successfully, and will continue to do so. But I'm having these panic responses. I'm a revision from Band to RNY. What can I do to fight these very different urges to eat? Can I get away with a last supper here or there, or small cheats? I'm not going to be able, by necessity and CHOICE to eat some of the cravings I'm having for years. That, too, sets me into panic mode. It's really a tough time for me. A true test of my commitment. I am 48, and am being screened for uterine cancer, tomorrow too. I'm WAY stressed out about that. My Dad, 83, has been in and out of nursing homes and the hospital from complications from Leukemia. A lot more stress to that story. I'm completely broke. But the prize at the end of the tunnel is the RNY on 6/17. IF I pass all the "tests". I will die if it gets postponed. I've been prepping for this moment for years, and now that it's three weeks away, all the stress and panic is brewing in me full force. I am in shock. I am ready. I am obviously not aware of the test of self, post surgery. My therapist told me psychologically, the shits gonna hit the fan when I can't turn to eating, and food to cope. But then, we've been working on that all along. I don't know: Were YOU scared? Did you cheat? Do you pull your crap together eventually? I love you for reading this by the way, thank you! Which Food Did (Or Will) You Miss the Most?
RJC5197 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I have just the opposite issue, and do not miss the junk, but my food world has opened up. Because of the VBG I had, I could not handle eggs, and many meats & other quality foods for years. My revision to RNY, has reversed that, and I replaced the junk food (I scream shakes, chocolate and others that would go down easy) with eggs and meats again, in moderation. -

Is there a such thing of a half bypass?
Middus replied to KaylaWls1216's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, the sleeve originated as part of the duodenal switch procedure (which has a bypass component), so she probably had a sleeve gastrectomy. Sent from my SM-N900P using the BariatricPal App -
Gastric Sleeve for over 210 KG and BMI 70
shedo82773 replied to rajivwelikala's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My hubby had a BMI of 64 and wanted the RNY but they couldn't do it due to some prior surgeries etc. But he had the Sleeve in June 2016 and has only lost 70#'s. Now I know there are people that have had GREAT results with the Sleeve. He doesn't seem to have enough restriction. Most Dr.'s will suggest the RNY for the weight that you have. But you are young and seem to be in good health. He had a Lap Band for 13 years but it malfunctioned so he went in for a revision to an RNY which they couldn't do. His Band had eroded into his Liver. His starting weight when he had the Sleeve was 420#'s. Most Dr.'s would suggest the RNY at your weight but you seem to be fairly healthy so who knows. Now I had the RNY 3 years ago and I have had GREAT results. Granted my weight wasn't as high but I started out with a weight of 249#'s this time I was 285 but managed to lose down to 249. I got below my goal weight in 6 months and have maintained my 124# loss for 2 and 12 years. You are the only one that can make that decision which surgery you will have. Talk to your Surgeon to help you with that decision. Good Luck and I look forward to seeing your journey. -

I'm Losing My Mind !!! Any Albertans out there with VSG?
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to chunk's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Chunk - here is some information I put in a previous topic - that you may find interesting. If you go to www.surgery.com, it will tell you the following (I got this from typing "deaths from sleeve gastrectomy" into my search engine) The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery lists the complication rate in vertical sleeve gastrectomy to be relatively low, even among patients considered to be at high risk. Cumulatively the overall mortality (death) from vertical sleeve gastrectomy is 0.39 percent—lower than with traditional bariatric surgeries. (last updated 11/24/2009) From an article on www.gastricbypassfacts.com, here is a extract from "How Does the Sleeve Gastrectomy Work?" The risks and complications of the sleeve gastrectomy:As with all forms of weight loss surgery, the vertical gastrectomy does carry risk and these will clearly vary from one patient to the next and must be discussed with your physician. Complications might include: Gastric leakage and fistula 1.0% Deep vein thrombosis 0.5% Non-fatal pulmonary embolus 0.5% Post-operative bleeding 0.5% Splenectomy 0.5% Acute respiratory distress 0.25% Pneumonia 0.2% Death 0.25% http://healthengine.com.au/article/sleeve-gastrectomy.html This article quotes " The mortality rate in gastric sleeve is 1:500 and it lies between the gastric band, which is the safest, and the laparoscopic gastric bypass, which carries the highest risk." So the first source says 3.9 patients out of 1000, the second source says 2.5 patients out of 1000 and the third says 2 out of 1000. So I would feel comfortable (based on these 3 sources) saying the death rate is somewhere between 2 and 4 per 1000. To contrast that - imagine 1000 people walking around that are your height and weight - with your exact health problems. How many of them would die in the next year from their health problems? From something I was reading this week on another forum - surgeons who perform 100 or more sleeves per year have lower risk rates. Hospitals that perform over 150 sleeves per year have lower risk rates. If you are considering a surgeon, ask how many procedures he/she has performed in a year, and how many he/she has performed in total. Then ask the same two questions about how many of his patients died. This will give you an idea where your surgeon is versus the norms. Also ask about the hospital you will have the surgery performed in - how many procedures do they do a year? Any surgery is scary and has risks. You can't go through life avoiding all risks. For me - the risk of dying of heart problems from NOT DOING this surgery and staying obese was much higher than the risks from the surgery. This surgery was the right decision for me. I wish you good luck on making your decision. -
Potential Side Effects list
kellyw74 replied to Mr-Smith's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just so you know, there aren't ANY drugs that you can not take with the sleeve. I take slow released drugs and do fine with them. The bypass restricts medications you can take. My dr. told me that there are NOT any pills that are restricted with the sleeve long term. Being cold sucks, but it comes and goes. Kelly -
Sounds like you have a good surgeon! Mine discussed RNY and Band with me, and had the same response for me. Sleeve was not available when I was banded. Remember, weight loss is slower with banding than bypass. I was ok with that. Best wishes in your decision.

2014 - Where have all the "ole-timers" gone?
CowgirlJane replied to Happy Camper's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
My surgery was Dec 2011 and Tiffikins in particular was someone who really helped me get prepared to take this on! I think she moved on once she started having babies ... i like to think she is living a nice normal life. To some extent, I tried to pick up the band to sleeve revision torch she carried. She really shed light on the whole topic for me... that it was worth trying AGAIN after my epic fail with the band.
