Go to a different surgeon. Maybe the one you have been referred to isn’t skilled enough to perform a bypass and only feels comfortable with the sleeve.

I had GERD pre-surgery. No way would I get the sleeve. GERD doesn't get worse for *everyone* who gets the sleeve, but it does for a sizable minority. There are several people on bariatric internet forums who've revised to bypass because of it. I would definitely get the bypass. I suspect this surgeon is just more familiar with the sleeve - and it's also a quicker, easier surgery, so less complicated for him. I'd be really tempted to get a second opinion. You're the one who'll have to leave with the potential GERD problem, not him.

I had reflux prior to my bypass, and my surgeon wouldn't do the sleeve on me because of it. I'm a little surprised that your doctors would recommend the sleeve! Why do they think it is "better"? Both surgeries are good, just different, and sometimes people just aren't good candidates for one or the other. Maybe check out a different surgeon??? If you have any predisposition for reflux you should get the bypass

I have a question I want to gastric bypass because of 30 years of acid reflux I've always suffered from gerd if I stop taking my medication for more than one day I'm in agony. But doctors keep telling me the sleeve is better. What can I say to convince them differently? Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

By an "upper GI" do you mean a procedure where you swallow some contrast and they look at how things flow through you with an x-ray machine, or an endoscopy where they sedate you and run a camera down your throat and take a look around inside? If it was an endoscopy, then they should see any ulcers (at least those within the new digestive tract, which is where they most commonly would be with a bypass, but not in the bypassed remnant stomach) but with the contrast imaging, they may or may not be able to diagnose an ulcer.

Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Balloon
alex76 replied to cam128's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My friend and I had our surgeries 1 day apart. She had a gastric sleeve and gallbladder removal. She has returned to work after 3 weeks off. I had the gastric bypass and was also worried about side effects or complications. It has been 1 month and I'm down 30 lbs since surgery and 62 lbs overall since I started this journey back in March. I've had very little pain and zero complications. I could not be happier with my choice! Best of luck to you! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Good Morning! I am having a revision to bypass in Sept. I still have reflux and can't wait to be off medication for it. I am hoping it will be gone after surgery. By the way, way back when I had it done no one told me the sleeve would cause acid reflux either! Good luck!!

Fight, fight, fight and fight
GingerSlim replied to SeattleLady's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Keep fighting! I had the same GERD/hernia issues since I was sleeved 5 years ago. Just had revision on 7/23 and have not had one second of heartburn/reflux. Make sure your surgeon does endoscopy. Meeting with nutritionist & behavioral will speed the process along too. I saw both of them before even scheduling surgery and I didn’t need to go through any of the classes again. Best of luck!!! We are rooting for you!!! -
I’m about 10 days post op revision VSG to RNY and everything that hits my stomach burns or makes me cramp. I have pain that radiates up into my left shoulder (not gas or a leak- I had an upper GI this past week) Not long after I have major diarrhea. My surgeon put me on carafate + the protonix I was already taking. He said my stomach was super inflamed. Do you think that sounds like symptoms of an ulcer and how long after treatment did it take for you all to feel normal???? Also, what foods/liquids were you able to take in? I need some reassurance here.

Weighing food (how do you measure yours?) cup or scale
Carolina Rose posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello Bariatric family. Do you weigh your solid/soft food on a scale? Or are you using a volume method and using a measuring cup to measure ounces? It seems one way will be more food than the other. I am pre-op and scheduled for Bypass surgery this Wednesday August 7th. Thanks in advance. -
Still in the game! After revision i was counseled that i may lose a little more so im STILL trying to maintain in the 150s. Im 151 lbs currently and about 19 days post op. Not too rapid so I'm satisfied.

lap band removal - how did you heal?
Deedee12 replied to loridee24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my lapband removed May 3rd on a Friday and was back at work on Sunday, I'm a physician, so I went to round on my patients on Sunday. I didn't need any pain meds post discharge same day of surgery. It was light breakfast day before surgery and liquids up until 2 hrs before surgery. Had soups after I got home, rested Saturday and back to almost normal on Sunday. No issues whatsoever. I was happy to be rid of the band as the last few months were awful and it did not even slip! Surgeon required 6 weeks of healing before revision. I'm getting sleeved August 16th. Good luck![emoji169] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
My surgery was goi g to be the gastric bypass and I went to my psychiatric doctor and told them I couldn't take extended release. So she put in for my medication in the non extended release and I need to take the brand name of this medication or I get terribly ill. I got a call from the pharmacy telling me that they no longer make the brand name in the non extended release. Other doctors try to change my meds ... it has never gone well for me. I usually found a new doctor who was in the mind set of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mode. Now I am going in to get a reconsult for the Sleeve. Make sure everything is good with your meds that you need, that if you will need to be a different medication do to the surgery to make sure you react to that medication without any issues. The first time someone tried to switch my mental health medication I could not tell my dreams from reality. I went to a bank got a loan for a new car and traded in my old car and got a brand new vehicle. My husband came home and asked "honey why is there a new car in the driveway" and I responded with "what are you talking about". If the car wasn't in the driveway I would never have believed it. The dr said it was a drug induced psychosis and I was lucky that all I did was buy a car. Which I have to admit I got a really good deal on that car. I agree if your mind is out of sorts you won't be able to enjoy the benefit of the surgery. Think holistically body, mind, and soul! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Some of the worse ulcers ever were at the anastomosis of a gastric bypass patient who started drinking a little wine again - 14 year post op!!!! Many others, as well. Those surgical tissues remain fragile forever, I'm thinking. Alcohol is a terrible irritant to tissue of any kind, but for surgical areas, even worse. Everyone makes their own decisions and takes their own risks, but for me, alcohol is on the "never again" list.

Today I went for my first mammogram since I had my gastric bypass last Oct. While I'm standing there with one of my boobs in the machine the very young tech says to me, "Uh, I need to ask you something. Did you lose a lot of weight since you were here last year because I didn't see any scars from a reduction and looking at your results from last year your breasts look a lot smaller." I told her "yes, over 100 lbs." She said , "oh, I better put that on your paperwork or the doctor is going to think I got the wrong patient." I told her, "Oh, Dr G has been looking at my boobs every 6 months for over 10 yrs now...don't tell him and see if he figures it out." I just looked at the report online and normally it starts out with, "breasts composed of mostly fatty tissue." No such mention this year!

I also have Bipolar Disorder and would strongly suggest you get your meds straightened out before surgery. I had to switch my antidepressant from extended release once a day to immediate release 3 times a day before surgery. I recently discovered that due to the gastric bypass I am not absorbing the antidepressant properly. Now I have to totally switch to another antidepressant in liquid form. I would hate for you to have surgery, then have your meds all messed up. Wait a month or two. As someone else said, in the big picture, a small delay isn't a big deal. Good luck, and keep us posted! gastric distress Has anyone else had a Gastrojejuvenectomy?
bzerm01 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my RNY gastric bypass in August of 2001 at that time had lost from 322 to at time of surgery weighed 295 pounds. I went on to lose more weight to 138 pounds by 2 years out. Then in February 8, 2016, (14 1/2 years out) I had a Gastrojejuvenectomy and hiatal hernia repair. I had gained weight up to 228 and my pouch had eroded and i had a hiatal hernia. Dr Blair Job of Pittsburgh, PA of the Esophageal and Lung institute was my surgeon at this time. I had this done at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, which after this time and 2 more surgeries to come in the future with bad experiences, I don't wish to ever go there again. More to be revealed if anyone answers my question that has been through similar surgery. I had my pouch removed and now my digestive system consists of esophagus to small intestine. I have no stomach at all. I get severe bile reflux at times. I have attacks of chest pain that feel like muscle spasms in my esophagus and they can happen anytime. They last anywhere from 5-15 minutes. They leave my very uncomfortable, I lost 4 pints of blood during this surgery and gained 30 pounds in that 8 hr surgery and my husband thought I was going to die. In the next 4 months I developed a wound infection and a dvt from my groin to my ankle and due to the fact that I had pe when I was 19 years old I will be on eliquis for the rest of my life.- 1 reply
