    Newby and bummed out!

Stick to your guns!! Yes it is true that Lap banders lose slowly at my 6 week appt i lost 33 pounds on a lap band and they were shocked saying I should have lost only 12 pounds or so. So no fill for me yet. Get what you want it may be slower but you wikll be happier in the end. Just remember that a lap Band requires alot more self control than bypass if you have any doubts on your ability to give alot up then have the bypass. Good Luck!!

    Not enough restriction?

Thank you. You are right that website is a great resoure. I called my Dr. and they said that I did need to come in and have my fill adjusted. Apparently, the first fill is to "test " my eating habits and to make sure everything is working properly befor they give me a tighter fill. So three weeks later I am off to TN a 6 hour drive...for a 30 minute apt.! Ughhhh! Eliza

Kidney Stones - This to will pass!

Feeling a little blue right now...The lithotripsy was okay I guess...but when the dr. came out and let me know that he only blasted the 8mm stone that was moving around ...the stint has to remain in and in about 3 weeks we do this all over again. Not what I really wanted to hear. Also, let me know my secondary problem ...yeast infection would probably continue because of the antibotics I will continue to take. Yuck! I also have the task of drinking 16 oz of Water before going to bed...making sure I get up during the night to urinate and then drinking another 16 oz before going back to bed. Sip, sip, sip means I won't be getting much sleep. My DH is usually very supportive but his teasingly telling me to quit whining isn't what I want. Tomorrow is a new day and I will get up, look in the mirror and tell myself all the things I have to be grateful for like a loss as of today of 75 lbs, 1 lbs to go to get of of the 300's, that's been at least 10 years ago that I saw that. That this is not fatal and it will pass ...just will take a little more time. Patience!!! And that I feel I have someone to talk to and that I can be honest with about my weight and journey. Since I started this I have made a promise to be honest with myself, DH, doctor and my new found friends here at LBT. Gee, I guess I started tonight and mentally I am starting to have an attitude adjustment. Apples2, Thanks for sharing your thoughts about how things are going that for out ... I've been following the LB rules but sometimes I get a little scared that I might fall back into old habits...I agree with you that the benefits I am starting to have high energy levels, more activity, and better health...well except for these temporary set backs is worth the effort of my new lifestyle. Thanks, Doxie...I have pain pills right now helping me through the next couple of days ... and I keep telling myself as I strain my urine ...This to will pass. But it does feel good to know others are thinking of me. DH said time for me to go to bed ....Thanks again. Deb
  4. What a way to Celebrate my 3 month anniversary of being banded! Tomorrow I go for outpatient surgery to get 2 large kidney stones blasted. Last week I doubled over in pain at work...I thought it had something to do with the lapband they called my husband and to the Emergency Room I went...past 3 hospitals on the way but I kept telling my husband to take me where I was banded...called my surgeon on the way and he said the ER....After the diagnosis of one BIG kidney stone stuck and 1 in the kidney, I had surgery to get the big one out...I woke up to find out they pushed it back into the kidney ...to big to get out. So tomorrow I get them blasted! Even though my lapband surgeon does not handle kidney stones he visited me in the hospital twice and sent his intern in twice just to see how I was doing. Has anyone had this done since banded...I'm nervous ....worried about it effecting my band. I have been so uncomfortable since leaving the hospital...pain pills, antibiotics, I feel like a walking pharmacy. Any encouraging words about the procedure? Kidney Stones - This to will pass!

Here's an update, my doctor's appointment a week after my lithotripsy was not good...the kidney stone did not break up so I still have two, the stint is still in place sent me home to wait another week because he thought he saw a small fragment in the tube.....today was my 2nd doctor's appointment ... still have 2 stones, one is getting close to opening...he gave me a choice --to go in and try to remove both stones or wait it out....I have been so miserable that I've decided to do the surgery and I hope he'll be able to get both of them out...won't know until Monday when ... have to be sure I have no infection..culture has to come back clean. Monday is also my next LB appointment. 4 weeks ago my LBS and I decided not to do an adjustment with all the things going on but he did set up this appointment 2 weeks earlier.... for the past three weeks my body has been playing with my weight up acouple pounds then down. I've fluctuated around 6 pounds. I noticed when I started this thread I was 301.5 this morning I was 302. I don't know if it's my frame of mind or that I need my second adjustment but I am getting hungry and it's getting harder and harder to stay with my 1/2 cup meals. Sometimes I think it's just my habit of emotional eating causing this. Then at other times I have only been adjusted once and I might need to have another fill. But again until this kidney stone thing is done I am having to drink so much Water and that's so hard for me to do at the present time do I really want to deal with more restriction and my water intake. I just don't know what my feelings are about it... I know no one can make up my mind but maybe some different thoughts might help me out of my funk! Any thoughts? Help? Deb
  6. Are you: * eating when you aren’t really hungry? * struggling with stress or “nervous” eating? * circling the kitchen because you can’t find “the thing” that will satisfy you? * eating when you are bored, tired, frustrated, or procrastinating doing something else? * hungry all the time–no matter what or how much you eat? If so, it’s worth considering whether emotional eating is getting in the way of your healthy eating and weight loss goals. We all eat emotionally. We’re encouraged by friends, family, and the media to associate food with all sorts of warm, comfy, delicious things that are not simply a need for fuel. We’re taught to think of “comfort foods” and to reach for certain foods when we want to Celebrate or gnaw away our frustrations. Emotional eating is a fact of life for most of us. But if it gets out of hand, it can TAKE the upper hand and become the primary factor behind your weight struggles. If you are having a hard time with emotional overeating than you know what a vicious cycle it can be to break out of. Remember that it IS a vicious cycle and apply these strategies to break free of the emotional overeating cycle and start walking a different path. 1. Call it emotional eating. If you are using food as a tool to cope with feelings or needs, than call it what it is. Once you identify emotional eating, let go of the other names you’ve been using—you know—the ones that leave you feeling awful about yourself, guilty, and maybe even ashamed. The issue is that you are an emotional eater. The issue is NOT that you are lazy, unmotivated, or undisciplined. 2. If you are going to change a pattern, you need to understand it first. This is why any diet you choose will probably fail you. A diet doesn’t teach you to listen to yourself and understand the pattern of your eating. A diet won’t help you understand what drives you to the kitchen after you’ve already eaten a meal. It won’t help you figure out what you are REALLY craving, feeling, or needing that isn’t even food. Taking the time to understand what’s really going on will help you craft a strategy where you address the CAUSE of your overeating. Programs like the Emotional Eating Toolbox™ 28 Day Program can be helpful if you find that you need new tools or strategies to identify what’s going on or help creating alternatives to overeating. 3. Don’t just say no. No isn’t a strategy. To successfully take control of emotional eating, you’re going to need to decide HOW you’re going to not use food the way you’ve been using it in the past. What’s essential here is knowing what you will do INSTEAD of relying on food. Too many weight loss plans fail because of a lack of this type of planning. Make a list before you start your next weight loss attempt—or better yet—make it now. What are your trouble spots, triggers, and emotional eating cues? What can you try instead of turning to food? ## Dr. Melissa McCreery is a Psychologist, Coach, and Emotional Eating and Overwhelm Eliminator for smart busy women. Anti Streched Pouch

Hi Thanks for replying. I have been just a little nervous. I had one incident about two yrs ago where I streched my pouch out a little. I got scared after that and just never put any Fluid back in once it was all out. I think from here on out I have to do very small fills. My band is working! Its only been a week since I got the fill I think I lose 5 pounds..lol. I'm happy. The only thing I'm worried about is, since I can get really only 3oz+ a little more in, is if I'm getting all the nutrtients I need. I have started, just eating my meat in one serving. waiting only 3 hours and eating a couple of veggies. Then I go back to 4 hours and eat meat and tiny fruit then later back to veggie in 3 hours with lil meat. What do you think about that? Now that I'm back on the bandwagon, I wanna dio it correctly. I think we are all different because I only have 1cc now and I don't think I would ever get to 2. However I notice that a 4 oz meal is all that I can eat. If I eat very very slow I'm full right away only after exactly 3. I cant finish a cup. Anyway are you in washington? Congrads on your weight loss, I can't even imagine that I will lose 70 pds! You must feel like you are flying! I'm so happy for you! Hi, I think your diet looks good. My doctor talks more about volume of food than weight of food. For example - my meals are to be less than one cup each (rather than 3 oz this or that). So, if I eat a cup of salad - that's only a few ounces. She's just more concerned about volume. So, I would say that so long as you are staying within about a cup at each meal - you should be good. I don't have any fill in my band so I don't really ever get that "full" feeling. I know some people get a hiccup or a burp or some slight pain in the shoulder but it sounds like you are making good choices. How is your weight loss going?

    Wish me luck...

Ok, I had my first consult yesterday. I thought I was quite prepared for anything they would throw my way but I was kinda surprised at a couple of the things they require pre-op (not that they are bad or anything). My doctor requires a gallbladder ultrasound and a EGD along with the insurance required 6 month weigh-in's and the psych consult. Anyone else had to have a US and EGD pre-op? My band surgery will be done outpatient. 5 small incisions. Port will be placed just below my xyphoid. They use staples (bummer) I suggested surgical glue...who knows by the time I have surgery maybe they will be using the glue. 2 weeks of liquids post op then advance as tolerated. First fill done under flouro. Does this sound about average?
  9. I almost never feel a fill until 5-7 days after it happens. Sounds weird, but it takes mine a while to kick in! Sounds like you should go back to your reg doc. Why the long wait for a fill? That sounds really crazy! My doc always gets you in within the week you call! Anyone else around you who does fills?

    Exhausted

Anyone else just absolutely exhausted since surgery? I was pretty tired all the time BEFORE surgery but since surgery it's been worse. I'm seeing others and talking to others who've had surgery around the same time as I did and they all have tons of energy and feel great. I don't need tons of energy but I'd like SOME! LOL! I do have a 2 1/2 year old DD that I'm home with. I work about 5 hours a week, at home. DH is a fireman and works a 72 hour shift so for a good part of the week, it's just me with the kiddo. I know that's tiring but I'm not feeling like I should be THIS tired. I could've been in bed at 6 tonight and been happily asleep. It's crazy! I think I'm going to have to talk to my PCP. My bloodtests all show my thyroid levels are normal, tho I think they're on the low side. Maybe I need to be retested. I'm getting plenty of Protein, supplements are fine, I'm not taking Iron 'cause it scares me so I don't know how I'm doing on that end. Anyway, in the meantime, I thought I'd ask if anyone else is just sooo exhausted as well. Oh, and my mom, who's had several surgeries, says to give it 6 months! That would be end of February!

    Hallelujah!

I had one plain scrambled egg this morning, with half a mushy banana topped with a teaspoon of Peanut Butter. Heavenly! My stomach isn't very hungry yet, but after two weeks of Jello and yogurt smoothies my brain has been craving salty stuff. I bought some gooey shrimp dip with microscopic pieces of seafood; it really takes the edge off those salt pangs. Of course I can't dip anything into it except my finger, but it'll do for now. By the way, I'm finally on the other side of 250. It sounds silly, but it's a big milestone for me. (I have friends who would be mortified to weigh as much as 150!) I can almost imagine being under 200 again... look out world, here I come.

    banded 2/16...can't eat

I was banded a week ago today and I have to say I must beg to differ on the not being hungry while your stomach is swelled--My surgery was on a Wed. and by Fri. I was hungry! I had chicken broth. My doctor is more into the Optisource and water and any liquids that have zero calories after surgery so I've had to follow the nutrionist menu to include broth/drained soups/sugar free popcicles/water/skim or 1% milk--I did the sugar free jello and while it didn't make me sick it didn't really agree with me either but I don't know if I ate too much or it just didn't agree with me. You need to get your protein in so sip on your protein drinks. I did find that Special K has protein water but it does have 50 calories and they also have packages you can add to your own water that is only 30 calories. I've been doing that to help me get my protein in my system. I (knock on wood) have been very blessed that other then the jello anything I have tried has been easy on me but also keep in mind I haven't gone overboard either I've stuck with the soups, protein drinks, etc. Good luck on your journey and I hope you feel better soon!!

    Surgery date 2/2/04

Just put the cottage cheese into a blender or food processor. I'm 4 days out (banded 2/3) and I'm beginning to get kind of hungry myself. Do you think some soft-serve low fat frozen yogurt would be ok, or am I kidding myself and it's just a slippery slope? Thanks, Sheila

    Any NE Ohio Bandsters lurking?

HI. I live in Akron and was just re-banded by Dr. Zografakas. I gather you have been banded for a few years. How did it go? I lost about 70 pounds with the first band, which slipped. He replaced it and fixed a hiatal hernia three weeks ago. I think that this site and the boois I have bought will give more support than I got at Summa. I would like to lose about 30 more, but Dr Z says I have done very well.

    LB tomorrow

For six weeks no bending, no lifting over 5-10 lbs., no strenuous exercise other than walking, and no swimming whatsoever (jacuzzi, pool, ocean). The more you get moving the better you'll recoup; just stick to those rules so you don't have problems with healing the sutures or infections. Good luck!

    LB tomorrow

Hi, it has been awhile, but it seems like other than walking, my doctor made my wait six weeks before starting any type of vigorous exercise program. Good luck tomorrow, let us know how everything went once you are feeling up to it.
  18. My husband had surgery 3 years ago when things ran rampid. Since he was one of the lucky ones that week he vowed to help assist others when he can. Many people (mainly women) go down bythemselves. When asked, the number one reason is to keep it a secret. If you tell just 1 person... your lie can be found out so easily. He was asked to help someone with their fears a few years back so he boarded a plane, met a complete stranger and became their... guess you would call it... the patient coordinator. (Their servant) Just so happened that woman had a real hard time with surgery and he was there to comfort her, get her ice, make her walk, speak to the nurses about pain when she couldnt, make sure her drains (2) were emptied... you get it. Some patients dont need a friend with them but when its all done and over with... many say that they wish they had someone with them. We both retired before we were 50 and I guess financially... pretty well off. Money was never an issue. Safety and well being are. Now he still goes down with people but he lets them buy his airfare. He does not charge them a dime. He is GOOD at what he does. I guess its his way of passing it forward. During the days of his surgery... a few patients died that week. When we pulled up to the place I wish we would of walked out. we were warned... but the surgeon had a great reputation, great web site... we got sucked in. Wow... to long a post. So again, its just his way of paying it forward. Hope that helped with your question. Edit note... hotel was fine. Grand and the Marriot are the same price... its just that he personally likes the grand. Must be a pretty waitress there lol

    Dr. Rodriguez in Mexico

Yes, I'm scheduled for surgery with Dr.Rodriguez on March 20 - three weeks from today.
  20. Hi lap-banders! I am 3 days into my journey and doing well. I'm looking for some advice on how to take my medications. Some of my meds are a little bigger than the size of a pea, so I have tried crushing them and mixing them with something I could eat or drink quickly. Last night I tried mixing my meds with sugar free pudding, but I didn't like the taste. The pudding with meds stayed in my mouth too long and I tasted too much of the meds. Any suggestions on how to take medications easier? Thanks Suemile
  21. dream to be slim

feeling fedup , weightloss static ,

hi too much fun , thanks for the reply . I understood that when you had a band, because of where it is placed, a small pouch was formed above the band [ small section of stomach ] and when you eat this fills up making you fill fuller quicker , this then goes through band into bulk of your stomach slowly . Despite several band adjustments since my surgery , when I had my barium xray the radiographer showed me that I did not have a small pouch above band ; he said this only forms once there is sufficient restriction , which at the time he said I had none until he put in a further 1/2 a ml . If I am able to drink a coffee in the morning I then have porridge or slimfast shake for Breakfast , usually 3/4 small crackers with very low fat cream cheese for lunch , evening meal sometimes low fat fish pie / homemade shepherds pie / Soup or bolognase [ minus the Pasta or rice as I cant tolerate these , my portions are very small . If I struggle to have a drink first thing in the morning I usually struggle all day sometimes with drinks and even yoghurt ! My barium xray showed my new fill is now at the right level as I could see the screen whilst the radiographer talked me through it , so I do not know what to think . I exercise also . Its been suggested that stress could be the problem and that it affects a lot of people whether your aware of it or not and can make your band at times feel over tight ; I don't feel hungry between meals and weight is not shifting either , confused .
  22. Depending on what I eat I get hungry 1 1/2 hours - 2 1/2 hours after I eat. It seems normal but then it seems like I should not get hungry until 3 - 4 hours after. I just got a fill last Thursday. So, How long after you eat do you get hungry?

    getting closer - scared!!!!!

Hi Micki, I am still 2 weeks out before banding and I don't know if I will have to go on the liquid diet but I know it will be tough. Do the best you can to stick with it, remembering that it is only for a short time. Try and keep yourself busy. I too worry about the big life change and I try to just think about it like this. Currently, without the band, I don't eat foods that for whatever reason don't set well with me and I don't miss them because I don't have the desire to eat them. While I know the foods that I eat vs. the foods that I don't eat will change but I am thinking it will be the same result. When I don't do well with them I won't enjoy eating them so I won't have the desire to eat them. I also keep in mind that there aren't any foods that I can't eat, it will just be much smaller portions, but I will be satisfied with the smaller portion. I know some of the experience bandsters will chime in here and give you some good support. Best wishes on your upcoming big day.

As a mom what is your plan?

My husband is taking the week of surgery off and my mom is too, so yes I do have support. Now that I am thinking about it, I'm going to save my frozen stuff for when they go back to work. I'll let them deal with the feedings of the "animals".

    Need advice ~ PLEASE ~

What is hurting is it your band or your port? If it is your port it may be that it is pressing on a nerve or something like that. If this is the case you will probably need to have it repositioned. Generally we don't feel the actual band. If it is your band and if it has slipped this can sometimes be fixed by having a complete unfill for a couple of weeks. If it is a really bad slip then you may need surgery to reposition or replace it. With a slip there are normally other symptoms such as inability to eat/keep food down, bad reflux etc. So where exactly is the pain and do you have other symptoms. If you are in a lot of pain then you are going to have to do something. The best thing to do first would be to call and discuss it with your surgeon.
