Four-1/2 months post surgery
FitnFabfor2014 replied to bonmilligan's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congratulations! That's a huge drop in four n 1/2 months! I was just sleeved on Tuesday. I enjoy reading about other sleeved patients and their recovery. Sorry I'm still at the stage two (yogurts, applesauce, Soups - only broth & creamy). I would LOVE some steamed veggies, I can't wait until I'm at that stage. How long after you were sleeved did you go back to work? And good luck with your new dating life! How exciting is that!!!!! -
Ug! Not "shrink-o"ing fast enough
Catherine55 replied to Catherine55's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will admit that yesterday was a particularly scant-eating day. I do focus on getting enough Protein generally though b/c I'm scared about losing my hair. Today, I had a lowfat yogurt, a soup (home made butternut squash soup), and I'll have salmon for dinner. I really want that scale to move, darn it! -
Post Op Protein Liquids & Soup receives or ideas
Monique1123 replied to Squidgy101's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was allowed cream soups as well. So originally , I stocked up on a bunch of “sipping Bone broths” they had them in all different flavors like a chicken, rosemary and lemon , Chinese 5 spice or something like that. I also bought miso broth to switch it up a bit . I did end up getting tired of those and so I reached out to my nutritionist and tried to get a better idea on if it had to be clear liquids or as long as it’s liquid then it’s fine and threw out a few examples for approval . She pretty much said it’s fine , as long as it’s liquid and as long as you “LOSE WEIGHT” just like that in caps lol . From that point on, I puréed my own vegetable soups and lentil soup , I bought different Tomato soups , a butternut squash and sweet potato soup. It was a game changer at that point so i would definitely find out more info as you get closer to see how strict the liquid diet for you will be .I know you mainly sound like you want soups to make at home but if interested here are a few other suggestions ! I bought sugar free popsicles the different colorful flavored ones lol AND the SF fudge pops! Those came in super handy when I was craving chocolate (which I NEVER do). I also got sugar free apple sauce , SF chocolate/vanilla puddings , SF Jello and oatmeal, non fat low sugar yogurt with honey and cinnamon . Of course , I bought all kind of premier protein shakes to test out my favorite flavors. I found these premeir protein clear drinks , quest (cookies N cream) protein shake soooo good!!! Then for water alternatives because trust me, you WILL get tired of water when it’s the only thing you can drink… I bought a bunch of different flavored crystal light packets such as a peach mango green tea and lemon Iced tea and they even had a large packets for pitchers and I got that in strawberry watermelon . I hope this helps!!! -
FYI: I finally found a protein powder I LOVE!!!

whole foods and post op diet?
moonlitestarbrite replied to moonlitestarbrite's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yogurt's easy! pour into jar with he culture, keepwarm for 8-12 hours. done! strain for another day if you are making greek yogurt. pretty darn easy. i love raw veggies, when can one xpect to be able to eat them post op? -
Hello everyone, My surgery was June 24th. I was cleared for full liquids yesterday. I am allowed all Protein shakes, no fat yogurt, sugar free applesauce, sugar free pudding, cream Soups with no lumps, etc. I can't seem to swallow anything thicker than my Protein shake without feeling like a lump is in my throat for hours. I had 1/4 teaspoon of the applesauce earlier and immediately got the lump and nausea. I'm not sure how anyone else does it! Does this mean I probably just still have swelling and should stick to the shakes for now? I can swallow them just fine and fluids just fine. I haven't called the doc because I'm not in pain, I just can't get anything that seems like "food" down. Thanks for listening to me whine. Let me know if you experienced anything similar. Chelle

this is excellent for anyone in the soft/pureed stage
Ginger Snaps replied to pookybear's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@pik My NUT gave me a great idea for the sugar situation with Greek yogurt. She had me buy the plain, fat free kind and then mix in a gel cup of SF jello. That way you get the fruity taste but not the sugar. It really helps the flavor. -
Mixed feeling more question! WHAT IF!
Lila21 replied to Loooou's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey there! Don't worry about asking questions... EVERYONE has a million questions before surgery and everyone is scared! Regarding the food I can eat. So far, there hasn't been anything I can't tolerate. There are a few things that go down better if there is sauce to make it more juicy. For example, when I eat chicken I usually make a yogurt sauce to dip it in. I also sometimes make Soup, and I eat the broth first, and wait a little bit before eating the solids--chicken is pretty tender when you cook it this way. As to your question about the number of calories, I'm not sure. The lowest I ever went before surgery was 1200 calories. Maybe your surgeon can give you some advice on this one.... As to the liquid diet, I had no problem with it, other than getting really bored and craving something savory. I ate a lot of Protein drinks and prayed for the mushy phase :-). I'm sure you could probably drink a latte (although we were told to stay away from caffeine early out, so I'd go with a decaffeinated latte maybe :-))I hope that helps! If it makes you feel any better, none of the things I was afraid of happened. I've had a really easy experience, and my restriction has been good, but I haven't had any of the typical problems that bandsters have like sliming, vomiting, and feeling stuck.... I hope that helps! Best of luck to you! -
Dr Kelly made a nice sleeve for me 8 days ago. When does the excitement start? (LONG)
desperateforchange posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 8 days post-op and have had a very uneventful time. Except for the 5 small incisions on my stomach, and a copy of my leak test x-ray, I feel so darn good, I can't believe my body went thru all that it has. February 3rd: After arriving at the Florence Hospital after a nice ride from the airport with a friendly driver named Carlos I met Trish and Dr Kelly. I immediately felt at ease meeting these two. No time was wasted in prepping me for surgery. I had blood work, IV port inserted, blood pressure, temp taken, medical history. Then the cardiologist came in to ask a few questions and give me an ECG. Shortly after, around 5:30, I was wheeled down to the OR, where I saw Dr Kelly, the anesthesiologist, and the scrub nurse. Dr Kelly came over, held my hand and asked me if I was ready. I said "I am so ready for this". He warned me of the anesthetic going in and that is all I remember until I woke up in my room trying to pull the oxygen mask off my face. My mom was with me and I am so thankful. She had a full size bed to sleep in in my room and we had a private bath with shower. Also a TV on the wall with about 4 english speaking channels. She was able to eat 3 meals a day in the Oasis of Hope dining room. It is for the alternative cancer patients and their families and everything there was very healthy. No sugar, lots of veggies and fruit, very little meat and a couple of fruit/veggie juices available per day. The surgery went well with no complications. I was up walking around @ about 4 am Friday morning. The worst part for me was the IV pole and the nurses coming in several times in the night. I was nauseous a couple of times but only threw up once. Feb 4th: Spent the next day and evening sipping on ice and water, walking around, napping, getting regular doses of pain meds, anti nausea meds and antibiotics and chatting with my family on Skype and Facebook.

Feb 5th: The morning of my discharge, before I got discharged, my mom and I went for a walk down to the beach. It is only about 3 blocks from the Florence hospital. We put our feet in the ocean and it was awesome. They removed my drainage tube (weird feeling and little painful) and IV port just before they took me for my leak test Saturday around 11 am at the Angeles Hospital. The taste is gross. Have gum or breath strips handy and a water to pop in your mouth after you are done. That will help tremendously. Then we got checked in to the Lucerna. My mom and I walked down to the Rio del Plaza and shopped for about 3 hours. I bought some bandaids @ the Gusher Farmacia @ the Plaza. They are Nexcare in a green and white box. They are 50mm x 101 mm and there are 10 in a box. You will want to change your dressing and these are a good size but they gave me a horrible irritation. They are adhesive all around. You may want to get some Mepore dressings (available at our Walmart behind the pharmacy counter) and bring them with you. I purchased them before I went but never thought to bring them with me and really wish I would have had them. They are a nice soft gauze with adhesive all around but not irritation. Anyway, we had to take a cab back to our hotel because we had too many packages. LOL! Met up with Trish the moment we got out of the cab at the hotel, and she had my discharge package for me. She introduced me to some yummy chicken broth powder available at the Costco here. Try to get a hold of some. It is called MAGGI and it is sort of like OXO but has way more flavour. It is very tasty. So I asked if she could pick some up for me and I would pay her. She said she would just take us there, so we went to Costco Mexico. Very cool. Just like our Costco but the cafeteria is outside.
She then took us to Revolucion and we shopped a little over there. Got a smokin' good deal on some silver jewelry from a vendor that Trish knows. I was ready to walk away, when I told them I couldn't afford what they were offering and then they called me back in to give me a better deal. 2 earrings and a set of bracelets (bangle style) for $60. Originally wanted $180. This is a gift for my girls who wouldn't have appreciated the price, so I was tickled with that offer. My mom got a Jimmy Choo knockoff purse for $75. He originally was offering it to her at his best price of $145, haha. So fun! We walked lots and I felt so good. Not tired or sore or anything. Amazing!! I had such an awesome sleep in the hotel room our first night out of the hospital. Lucerna is a top notch hotel and the beds are really comfy. My mom woke me up @ 4:30 to tell me to roll over, that my snoring was keeping her awake, so it must've been a deep sleep. Feb 6th: Dr Kelly and Trish came by our room early on to check up on me and my incisions. Had a little visit then they left and mom and I walked to the mall again. We had missed alot of stores and had a few more gifts to buy. Again, I felt great. Mom and I had lunch at a nice restaurant in the mall. It was called California something or other and had a menu more familiar to us. You could have a fajita or cheeseburger. My mom had the buffet. I had soup. We walked around and shopped for a few hours, then walked back to our hotel. We had supper that evening with Trish and Dr Kelly and his little boy Richie. We had a nice visit and a good talk about some of the goings on with a certain patient coordinator. Feb 7th: Woke up at a decent time, showered, repacked and got ready to go home. We were able to sit out in the sun for about a half hour before our driver was there to pick us up. It was beautiful out. We were heading back to -30 C so we really enjoyed the heat of 25 C. AHHHHH! Very nice driver, had a nice visit while waiting to cross the border. His name was Jonaton. Got us to the airport and we had enough time to have a relaxing lunch @ Chili's before we had to board our plane. ADIOS Amigos! Like everyone else has said, walk, walk, walk. Try to get down to see the ocean if you can get someone to go with you. I was up in the middle of the night walking and I've had very little gas pain. Just a little in my chest that feels like a burp caught sideways. Nothing like people talk about with the pain in the shoulders etc... Eight days later and I'm still having a liquid diet except for yogurt. Getting bored with it and can't wait to move on to solids. I have had constipation and have been taking Benefibre and just picked up some Metamucil. Other than that I have nothing else exciting to tell you. It has been wonderful so far. I can't wait to start seeing some results. -
I came out of surgery able to take in an ounce of protein drink and an ounce of water (at the same time) every 15 minutes. I did need to mix up my protein intake from room temp clear protein, to cold shakes, to warmed tomato soup with added protein powder per my nausea tolerance the first 5 days due to nausea with the pain meds but once off those I'm good with any. I drink 50-70 ounces of water a day, (preop I was 80 to 120 minimum) with electrolyte drop ins. That puts me at 80 to 90 ounces "intake" a day. I meet and exceed the fluid and protein goals. My 2nd week post-surgery I began to get a painful empty feeling several times a day. Its pissing me off. Its not acid, I'm on omeprazole and do 2 antacid meltaway chewable a day. I can eat an entire Greek yogurt serving tub in 30 minutes, with small bites and putting down my appetizer spoon between them. I don't like it, though, lactose pisses off my digestive system, but I was desperate for a "solid" and popsicles don't cut it either. I can easily get in 500-600 calories with the meal protein drinks and 2 snacks to stop my stomach hurting because of its "empty" feeling. I'm 12 days out. This is ridiculous! Anyone else come out of surgery this way and struggle with liquids? Please tell me moving to food is going to curb this, lower my overall calories when I can focus on solid proteins, and let me feel full.

Eating on a road trip -- looking for suggestions.
NikkiDoc replied to BestDayEver's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was traveling for business early in the week since I flew I did not have a cooler option. I was able to stop at a convenience store and get a light yogurt and P3 by Lunchables. I love the grilled nuggets at Chik-fil-A. The kid's meal is a perfect size. I get either fresh fruit or no sugar added cinnamon applesauce as the side and a diet lemonade. Wendy's has a grilled chicken sandwich but I skip the roll and don't get a side. You can get Wendy's chili. Wendy's has a few salads with grilled chicken or with the chili. It looks like McD's has some grilled chicken sandwiches or grilled chicken on salad. Boston Market has some good options. Arby's has a lot of sandwiches. On the kid's menu they have a turkey cheese sandwich and GoGo squeeze applesauce for a side. They have a roast turkey salad. I have no problem just eating the meat/cheese, lettuce, tomato off of a sandwich and dumping the rest. Same with a burger. In your case I would pack a cooler. Even if the rest of the family wants McD's you know you have something you like and won't lead you into temptation. But regular bread and basic hamburger rolls have never been my downfall so it is easy for me to not eat it. If bread and rolls is a weak spot for you you may want to go with the grilled nuggets, Boston Market chicken (hold the cornbread) or salads. I have never asked but the restaurant may be willing to put the guts of the sandwich in a box and hold the bread/roll and thus avoid the temptation. -
In general I don't think alcohol should be part of someone's post weight loss surgery lifestyle. Would you make a habit of eating a candy bar or nice cream sundae I doubt it. Some of the people who will tell you it's okay to drink alcohol will be the first to tell someone they shouldn't eat Greek yogurt with fruit in it because of the sugar. Personally I don't understand the logic in that. Before anyone says that red wine is good for you I don't think the sugar you get from the wine is really worth the health benefits that you're going to get.

And I am waiting for my second attempt at releasing my stricture, Dr Noria, my Dr Needleman's partner who is very skillful at endoscopy, , to quote Duck Dynasty, it is her "bang zone", attempted on October 12 to release it, dicovered I now have 5 new ulcers, around the stoma opening and on the back wall of,the jejunem, I have been on Carafate around the clock every 6 hoursc(6am-Noon- 6pm-Midnight) and doubled up my omeprazole to twice daily, told me to maintain vitamins, Zofran, minerals, and of course the Carafate, and omeprazole, which I was on when my first ulcer, Hector, was discovered back in December 2017, I don't believe for,me it is gastric-protective, but I will slog along with it. Liked Dexilent MUCH better but They are the specialists, aren't they? And the same liquid diet, what I Call Stage 2A, there are things on a true 2 Precious Pouch balks or refuses. Don 't add anything she has refused before, this includes plain Greek yogurt weak runny cooked cereal, cottage cheese, even a salted soggy saltine, I always could keep them down the only other time in life when I had so much emesis, pregnancy. She will try again October 26th, another EGJ, can't call it an EGD, because a bypasser's duodenum is no longer accessible. And this morning I woke up with right subcostal pain, the self-same pain that sent me to the gastroenterologist last winter. They thought then, it m8ght have been from Hector, my anteal gastric ulcer, that's why I underwent my EGD then. Took my Carafate as close as I could to 6AM, I had a rough night, got woke up about 2, couldn't get back to sleep until 4:30, then back awake for that dumb pill. Have to pour boiling water on it to melt it down and chug, well you know, what passes for a chug these days, the slurry. Tastes about as thrilling as white flour paste, but I do it,I do it. So now what, keep sipping small sips of water, go open a protein shake, or stop even putting THAT in? I've read , I've studied, I probably got as much book knowledge as a layperson can have, but still this surgery did not come with an Owners Manual. I am in Subjective, not Objective Mode. See my white flag waving? I SURRENDER! Bypass Surgery 150 Frustr8 Nil! And yes, my bowels are working so I can't be full of💩anymore. -
It depends on what stage you are in. I am in the "normal" food stage and I drink protein shakes or have yogurt or have a crust less breakfast quiche.

Now I Am Lactose Intolerent
sassypants replied to mufasas-mom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Milk sugar is what you’re intolerant to right now so things made with that will effect you. I am lactose intolerant you can get a bunch of lactose free stuff, cheese milk yogurt even ice cream not that I have tried that but you can get it. For my shakes I either use lactose free semi skimmed milk or alpro hazelnut milk. -
Good Morning All My name is Tammara and I am a mother of 2 here in the ATL (Atlanta, GA for those who don’t know...LOL!). I have been overweight for almost 18 years now. I have gone on diet after diet only to gain the weight back. I will say that over the past few years after I found out that I have PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) I have been confused about how to lose weight. So I really have not tried like I should to. Like everyone else, when I am told that I cant have something it make me want it more and now time is not my friend in the journey for weight loss. So I decided to get WLS. I decided on the Lap Band procedure as I did not want anything too invasive to my body. I just need a little bit of help as I know I need to do the work. I am on a diet from my nutritionist and my surgeon where I have to eat of get in 70 grams of protein a day. I am having a hell of a time getting to that number. I really don’t know what to eat to get that amount in. I am not a milk drinker...I don’t like oatmeal, yogurt, cottage cheese, brain cereal...LOL!!! I know it is a lot. But I just need to know what I need to do to get this amount in. I want the surgery will all my heart and I don’t want to do anything that might get me turned down. I just need a little help. If all goes well I should be scheduled for sometime in June and I will like to lose 20lbs before that time. Any bit will help...Thanks everyone.... Tammara!!!

What a cute teeny taco! I use tiny ramekins the size of my cat's food bowls for teeny lentil soup & chili (doctored with said sliced avocado, shredded cheddar and a teeny dollop of plain FF Greek yogurt). So how does your tummy do with the teeny tortilla? I still can't keep any kind of bread down. Not even a teeny bite. -
What to eat after your surgery because this diet is killing....
Apple1 replied to BiggSixxFizzle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't start puréed until week 3 and solids until4-5 weeks. Everyone has a different plan. I would stick to the plan your doc/nut gave you. Most of what you are feeling is called head hunger. A few ways to deal with it are to stay busy, walk, drink plenty of fluids, try different types of puréed foods. Cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs, creamed soups ect -
5 days out - Are Eggs ok?
blashlee replied to BoerneTX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If your surgeon gave you an eating plan, I would say stick to that. I'm in my Week 2 post op and trying foods from a limited list. Eggs and refried beans were on there so that's what I had for my first food. Her advice says yogurt goes down best but I learned today that that's not true for me. If it went down well then it's probably ok but double check with your surgeon. -
To lower the amount of carbs in the foods you mentioned, use Water for the Protein shakes instead of milk and look for the low carb yogurts. I like the Dannon light & fit greek yogurt. a serving has 12 g protein, 8 g carb and no fat (80 cal)

Awww... We are here for each other. I am six weeks post op and I've learned I cannot tolerate meat. None. Except chili, go figure. I'm so frustrated and I've had a few break down moments. I've thrown up a few times these past few weeks and I know right now I need too. I tried some turkey burger tonight (3 small bites) and I can feel it sitting in my throat. Tomorrow I'm going back to soft foods like cottage cheese, yogurt, crackers with cheese. For some reason crackers are considered soft. I've also asked myself what have I done a couple of times today. I know I made the best choice for me and I'm still learning. However I am somewhat sad that I let myself get to the point of needing surgery. I've decided to attend a support group meeting next Wednesday hoping that I'm not the only person feeling frustrated. Keep smiling and I heard this will get better over time. The best part is we will be skinny hot babes by summer!!! ????

I think avocado would be great! Also sour cream or plain yogurt.

Saturday night I had a stomach ache that would not let up, it continued into Sunday. No nausea, no vomiting, diarrhea, just a really annoying ache/crampy feeling. Was able to eat normally, normal BM's. I went about my business and even did my 2.5 mile jog Sunday AM. I tried eating a yogurt Sunday afternoon and shortly thereafter I could barely stand up straight. Called my surgeon and he suggested I go to the ER since it was bugging me for so long. I went, had blood work and a CT scan-- everything was normal. Doc wrote it off to menstrual cramps; but I know my body and know that I never get crippling cramps. (I have an IUD which makes my periods light-non-existent). I'm wondering if I'm suddenly becoming more sensitive to sugars. I haven't dumped on anything to this point. I've eaten that brand/flavor of yogurt before-- but this time I couldn't even get through the cup before my stomach began revolting. But no other symptoms that I've read about for dumping (sweaty, racing heart etc). An overall odd experience. Well I'm glad I got confirmation everything is fine on the inside-- and if nothing else; I've got reason to be more vigilant with my sugar intake!
