comparison with gastric bypass patients
wannabthin replied to kbinaz's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
That is what I was worried about and that is why I chose not to tell anyone other than my DH and mom. I know alot of people that have had the bypass, so I knew that if I wasn't losing weight like they thought I should I would hear about it. Since you have told people now might be a good time to educate them on how the band works. Good luck -
comparison with gastric bypass patients
Angelica replied to kbinaz's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You know, for a few weeks, I really fell like I made a mistake. I thought, I could be losing SO MUCH more weight, so much more quickly. I thought, how much easier it would have been to just get a bypass and move on with my life. then i went to go get my first fill. It was at a surgery center, because its under floro, and a nurse was getting me ready for the procedure, and she said, 'you know, the lapband is so much better than the bypass, in my opinion. the people who have the bypass are SICK for months after the surgery'. Then I remembered why I did this in the first place, i didnt want to define my life by weight loss surgery. I didnt want to be 'that girl'. Ignore the haters, dont tell the people who arent necessary about the surgery. Its the easiest way to go in my opinion. -
Sleeve journey turned into RNY
Mattymatt replied to FloridaElle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The recovery is not necessarily longer for RNY. I've been told it is about the same but it really depends on the individual person. The RNY is a good way to go. The statistics favor RNY for long term success. Even though I really don't have GERD, I'm still doing the bypass because all of my doctors think it will work better for me. -
Hi! Long time reader, first time poster. After several years of researching, I finally decided it was time. I went to a highly regarded surgeon, I completed my six month mandatory (per insurance) wait. I met with the nut, I had my psych eval, I had blood work, EKG, etc. I even lost weight. Then, on my last visit with my surgeon, I happened to mention that I get heartburn every once in a while, nothing that can't be relieved with Tums. He asked about reflux, and I told him the only time it has ever happened, I was eight months pregnant and ate hot wings. He decided he wanted me to have EGD, just to be safe. Wouldn't you know it came back as Barrett's Esophagus ( No dysplasia.) I am DEVASTATED. I have spent MONTHS reading and learning and preparing for the sleeve, and now it's all in jeopardy. My surgeon said since there is no dysplasia, that he would still sleeve me, but I needed to be aware that I may have to be converted to RNY down the line if the GERD gets worse. He also advised me that I was limiting my treatment options if I was to ever develop Esophageal cancer. After a long few days crying my eyes out and discussing with my partners- I decided to go ahead and just have the RNY. I figured I'll do the hard part now, ( longer recovery, etc) than do the sleeve, and have it hanging over my head that I may need to go back in for a revision each time I feel a tingle. So happy to have found you! Elle

Hello Twism44--It is so nice to hear that we can relate. I have been post op from my Gastric Bypass since 2016 and I am now facing a stall. I decided to revisit my preop liquid diet and I am happy to say that I am doing my thing. It feels good to be disciplined. The pandemic led me to each due to boredom while working from home. But now that the gyms are open in NYC I have included my exercise now and am watching what I eat. Kudos to you with the inspiring words. Thank you! Remaining positive and keeping the faith alive is important. I hope to lose 50 lbs within the next few months. Be well and stay safe. -
Fat Doctor
animallover1247 replied to sassyfrass23's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had never heard of " Fat Doctor" until I saw it on BP. I found the episodes on You Tube as well and started watching them about a month ago. I like them but I wish he would feature some patients who have had VSG surgery but now I think about it I think he only does bypass surgeries. He is very compassionate and nonjudgmental towards the morbidly obese. Wish there were more of him in the world... -

Hi all! I had RNY Gastric Bypass on Friday & came home Saturday late afternoon. The pain level is severe! It does not feel like the pain reliever does anything to ebb it at all. I have been walking like a fiend even though it hurts. Every 2 hrs I walk 2 blocks. I even did it in the middle of the night because the pain was so bad I couldn’t sleep. How long does this pain last? Seriously thinking of going back to the hospital.

Band revised to sleeve revised to bypass! Please help
Hellie replied to jamiep5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@@jamiep5 I understand your concern. Your story is very similar to mine. I just had my sleeve (done in 2010) revised to the bypass and I was 190lbs. I was terrified of dumping, rapid weight loss, and severe vitamin deficiency. I just had my bypass on 5/16/14 and I am doing well as far as food tolerance. I don't know if it's my sleeve helped with that. I am scared to hinder weight loss because I've already done the whole food progression before and I know what hurts and what doesn't. Lmk how yours is going! -
Band revised to sleeve revised to bypass! Please help
jnana replied to jamiep5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
This my beginning to LB revision to ByPass. I will be having surgery on May 7th too, I hope. I had an abnormal EKG and this may postpone my surgery date. Has anyone had an abnormal EKG and if so did you get clearance fast. I will see the Cardiologist tomorrow and I am praying for good new both ways. -
Band revised to sleeve revised to bypass! Please help
Lisa's Hope replied to jamiep5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Wow, I just found this thread and I'm surprised at all the sleevers that have had problems with bile reflux and esophageal spasms. I've been posting since 10 months post op about these horrid pains and spasms. I was post op 2 years on May 21. At the time of posting, I couldn't find anyone that was having them. I've been putting off getting bypass for several reasons. Number 1 being my husband has terminal liver cancer and was given 6 months in January at the age of 48. So my days are filled with taking care of him and that is how I want it to be. Losing the love of my life is the hardest thing I've ever faced and seeing the physical deterioration is traumatizing. Since he was diagnosed I've gained 20 pounds back. I lost 128 and was 168 and now am 188. I'm so scared I will gain back it all. Recently I've been taking Dexilant for the reflux and levsin for the spasms which definitely helps. I'm just so scared to have the bypass and go through another surgery. Especially, since it will be without my husband because he isn't going to make it. I was self pay for the sleeve because my insurance excluded weight loss surgery. I will have another policy on July 1st but it too excludes weight loss surgery but I was wondering if anyone was approved for bypass because of acid and bile reflux, spasms and gastritis? I would love to hear from all of you that revised and honestly are you glad you did this? I know the spasms are so painful that revising would be welcomed but I'm still scared. Reason is you can get ulcers years and years out and not know you have them because you don't feel the acid anymore. I know of two people that passed away with ulcers. Not mentioning any names because one was family of a friend and the other I just heard about. Hope all is well with everyone that revised. I don't know when I can even think about this. My surgeon has been trying to get me to do this for a year. I'm so sad and heartbroken. Just exhausted. My husband was in the hospital all week last week and now has a picc line which Home Health is going to be helping me with. Hospice isn't an option with me because they want to take away his fluids and meds and dope him up until he dies. Not happening. Only God will say when it is time for him. -
Long Term effective sleevers

I was sleeved in 2012, and am currently working on getting revision to gastric bypass [emoji17] I was initially very successful and hit goal after 2 years. However... I had a baby in July 2015 and not only gained back my weight but went into such a deep depression I gained almost 100+pounds. Not typical of most sleevers but just sharing my personal story. I had my tubes tied and this time around I will be doing things BY THE BOOK! Good luck to you! -

Band revised to sleeve revised to bypass! Please help
jamiep5 replied to jamiep5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I hope my story helps you in your decision. If I could do it all over again I would have went straight to bypass. My doctor said if you already have acid reflux the sleeve just makes it worse! I would defiantly talk to your doctor about this before surgery! There is nothing worse then loosing weight and not being able to enjoy it due to all the pain your in!! Good luck!! When is your surgery date? I have always had a normal EKG, sorry I'm no help here. I have always had a normal EKG, sorry I'm no help here.. Prayers coming your way for a fast approval!! I guess I'm just psyching myself out thinking about all the possibilities lol! -

@@jamiep5 Thanks for telling your story. I'm pre-op and stories like this are what have me deciding to go straight to bypass. I have reflux already and I just want to do what is the healthiest for me with the biggest chance of success. Hope you start feeling great soon! Best wishes! -
Band revised to sleeve revised to bypass! Please help
Ginger Snaps replied to jamiep5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@jamiep5 -- My surgery is June 9th. My doctor didn't even offer the band -- he says he hardly ever does that surgery any more as the weight loss from it statistically isn't significant and it has so many complications. Because i have pretty severe reflux, he said the bypass is really my only option. I'm not worried about that though -- I want to do what has the best success record and that's bypass. Wishing you all the best! -
After years of success, my body is rejecting the band - cany anyone else relate?
SoccerMomma73 replied to mary murphy-dematteo's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My insurance company based my revision on my pre-band weight. As much as I HATE insurance companies, mine was extremely helpful in the revision process (revision to bypass for me). Good luck!!!! -
Hematoma Hell after Revision
Dee replied to TexasT's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
What staples did you have? Did you have an open procedure? My understanding is that with a lap revision there would not be staples? I am concerned with them getting this port out aka a tumor. Take care of your wound and follow the directions in its care!-wash hands and keep the dressing in place!!! (protein helps the body to heal..) Did you get another antibiotic??? -
Help - my brain is exploding..
Filosophia Scandinavia posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello - I am a danish woman, trying to loose weight. ME: 36 years old BMI: "only" 33 Comorbidities of my weight: sleep apnea High bloodpressure Lower back problems are getting worse for every pound overweight (scoliosis/ Ishias problems) Father diabetes 2, both mother and father are medicatet for hight bloodpressure. Sister underwent a Gastric Bypass en roux with a BMI of 40 with great succes :rose: I have tried almost every diet on earth, undergoing lifestyle changes, have been in therapy, have spent a lot of money on al kinds of thing.Iron, Calcium and Proteins, that I am digesting.:confused2: Futhermore it seems that a sleeve operation is having a lower mortality rate and fewer post complications? One of the reasons why I am overweight is the earlier use og sugar as a coping strategy for everything. I have worked through most of this - but see it as somekind of a dependency even if I do not use it as much as before. And this is not good with the sleeve? Does anyone in this forum have eny experiences with. If some of my earlier eating habits are due to cognitive habits, lower ghrelin secretion will not help me? Or?:confused1: All you comments are welcome - my brain is exploding I already know, that my BMI is low (but high enough to die earlier), and I am mostly considering an operation because og my health issues. Just a few words, please? -
Help - my brain is exploding..
Tiffykins replied to Filosophia Scandinavia's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, RNY just wasn't an option because of the regain stats, and long term complications from friends that I know in real life. I can tell you that studies show only 30% of RNY patients "dump" on sugar meaning that it's no guarantee that you'll get sick if you eat sweets. Out of the 8 friends I have that have had RNY, only 2 of them dump on sugars/fats, and all of them have either gained back 75% of their weight, and are now seeking revisions, or have had major complications with vitamin/nutrient deficiencies, bowel obstructions, strictures, pouch and esophageal dilation, and a whole slew of other issues. Are some of the complications directly related to their compliance level, YES, but some of them have struggled from the beginning. For me, I chose the sleeve because it made the most sense. Least amount of long term complications, no rerouting, zero food or medication restrictions, no blind stomach left behind that can't be easily scoped yet can still develop cancer and ulcers. None of the surgeries cure cravings, head hunger, or emotional eating. That part of the journey is all on you, and you have to be willing to battle those issues along with the assistance of whichever surgery you choose. I've done extremely well with the sleeve, and live a perfectly normal little life eating anything and everything I choose, I enjoy a balanced diet, and really enjoy not worrying about foods that might make me sick, or if I've taken all my Vitamins. I do take a high quality adult mulit-Vitamin and a sublingual b12. I took multis before surgery because it's recommended for women my age. You'll be able to "eat" around any of the surgeries. They operate on our stomachs, not our brains. We have to form new habits, and work on our own issues. -
Survey - Carbonated Drinks? Do u drink them?
sissy63 replied to lapnicky's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
NO!! Pre surgery: I wasn't a 'big fan' of soda as my body could not tolerate it, and I paid for it with UTI's. Seriously if I drank 3 sodas a week- you can bet money within the next 2 weeks I will be at the ER with a UTI. So I learned a long time ago to make Water my friend... But aside of the bloating the carbonation stretches your stomach too! And why go through what you have only to do the same thing to your body all over again....because once it stretches it will take more food to get to that 'full' feeling...AND no straws.. Honestly I am too scared to try it, I'm afraid the stretching will do damage to my suture line in my stomach!!! just not worth the risk. I have a friend who is 4 yrs. post op gastric bypass she drinks soda- but she dilutes it with water....lessens carbonation. -

Insurance for revision from VBG to Gastric Bypass
Chelsea Pedro replied to Chelsea Pedro's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thank you so much for responding! I feel better already. If you don't mind me asking, were your complications similar to mine, throwing up all the time? What was it that finally changed their mind? Although I'm not doing this purely for the purpose of losing weight (symptom alleviation is first for me), did you find it was easy to lose weight once you had it revised? Are the side effects of the RNY better to deal with? It sounds like the VBG was a disaster for lots of people, and I'll bet many of them just suffer in silence. I'm glad to find someone who can relate. Looking forward to hearing from you!
