    Regaining weight, help!!

That depends on what surgery you had, which I don't see you have listed. With my BPD-DS I am supposed to, but I haven't been all that good about doing so and haven't had any ill effects. I believe its suggested that bypass patients take vitamins regularly. I didn't think it was as important for the gastric sleeve since that is not a malabsorption procedure. Did you doctor ever advise you about vitamin supplements? I had my surgery in Aug 2018 and lost over 100% of my excess weight, but I regained about 30 pounds from a (too low) 133 pounds in 2020. Even with that was still below 25 BMI. My fault, too many sweets and high carb processed junk food. Still have good restriction, and I've lost 10 of that 30 pounds so far in less than a month eating mostly salads with custom no-oil vinaigrettes, and lean meat and veg dinners. My preferred proteins have been tilapia and premier protein shakes. If I get hungry between meals I'll have an apple, which fills me pretty well.

    Lap band Deaths

I just came across this discussion and decided to join to reply. I myself have been looking into lapband for quite a while now, but am disabled and my insurance won't cover it. I've heard nothing but good things about the lapband oposed to gastric bypass. That is up until this last week. My cousin called me to say I seriously hope you aren't still considering it. She works with a girl that had it, she's lost a lot of weight, but was in ICU several days last week due to bleeding internally due to the lapband. She also told me about someone that came in her clinic that had just lost a friend due from the lapband lacerating something I believe she said. My aunt is currently in the hospital and her roommate also had the lapband. She lost 135lbs, but developed a hernia and her intestines were all twisted due to complications of the band. She is so weak and sick and can't hold any food down. It definitely make you think...

    bypass vs. banding???

Although I have decided to go with the band, it was also recommended that I really consider bypass. Mainly because I am diabetic. It seems that there is a higher incidence of diabetes reversing itself with gastric. This is occurring before the weight is even lost. Although this is happening it is not a guarantee for all diabetics. I have also heard if your BMI is very high (not sure how high) then gastric makes more sense. My surgeon also said if I was 50 or older he would not recommend the band but he would rather do the gastric. I assume because he figured there is less time to reverse the diabetes by then I think they believe I will have gone from type I to type II and be insulin dependent. Anyway as of now my diabetes is in full control and I have about 60 lbs to lose. I am committed to losing the weight and I think the band is the answer for me. Again, it is different for each person.

    bypass vs. banding???

I think it depends on you. I was banded on Dec 23, 08. I have lost 18lbs and have 80 to go...I have a friend who also has the choice. I let her feel where my port is (and you can feel this thing inside of you) and she freaked. There is also more care needed with the band. You have to get fills and very carefully watch how you eat, NO drinking 30 minutes before or after your meals. It just depends what you are willing to go through to loose the weight and begin your new life. Gastric bypass has way more side effects too...I wish I would have gone bypass...:blushing:

  7. Hi, pals. The basics first- surgery on August 29 gastric bypass. Two weeks after surgery had partial blockage and went back to beginning. After redoing liquid phase, I have worked up to soft food, which I started a couple days ago. While I did ok on puréed foods- soup, sugar free pudding, etc. but every soft food I have tried has made me very sick. Tuna, turkey, eggs. I throw up violently for about an hour after, then I’m fine. My nutritionist said just to take it slow and we would check in during our 6 week appointment (about a week and a half from now.). Anyone else experience anything like this? Any tips on what you did if you resolved the issue? Thanks, Angela
  8. I just started the Puree stage of my diet. I made a batch of Pureed Chicken thighs made from skinless boneless chicken breasts with every iota of fat removed. I thinned it with low sodium chicken broth until it came together into a paste. I combine this with pureed hard boiled eggs and a little light mayo and greek yogurt to make a simple egg/chicken salad. I also mixed the pureed chicken with broths and strained cream soups to add a little protein and flavor. My body seems to be tolerating the chicken in pureed form just fine. I was a little concerned about introducing chicken back into my diet after talking to a friend who had Gastric Bypass about 8 years ago. She said Milk and Chicken were nightmare foods for her. I understand how you feel about chicken wings, and that crunchy fried texture. (I love my air fryer too). I have a few pounds of chicken wings, 2 wing-ettes per zip-lock bag, in the freezer waiting for the 'regular food' phase of my diet to start, after soft foods. My plan is to slow cook them in a sauce of some form until they are tender. It wont be crunchy, but they still will be wings. I have them in pairs of 2 for portion control. I'm going to treat them as, well, a Treat, and consume in moderation. Good luck on Soft foods, and your weight loss journey!

    Devastated :(

@@jessdawn37 Don't give up hope! I actually went in for surgery in September 2012 and when I woke up I was told they couldn't do the surgery due to my liver. I thought that was a sign that I was meant to stay this way forever. I had gotten into a car accident in the parking lot of that clinic, and it seemed that whatever could go wrong always seemed to go wrong there. Fast forward to the end of 2013 and I decided to look into other doctors. I went to a surgeon who told me I should do bypass, but I know that wasn't the right decision for me, so I looked again and found Dr. Landerholm. I went in for a consult and told him how I gave up and he told me never to give up hope. He had me do a three week pre op diet and I had surgery last Monday (9/22). I also had a hiatal hernia repaired that the first surgeon said I didn't have, so I have to look at it as a blessing in disguise. If the first doc had done the sleeve, I'd still have a huge hole in my diaphragm where my stomach was stuck. If you would like to msg me please do: mkwhite1280@gmail.com

    I'm freaking out!

This anxiety is normal. It is major surgery...if you weren't freaking out, then you should panic! I'm not in the medical field and to be quite honest, I'm fairly naive about the complications associated with a revision. With that being said, I do believe in the power of prayer...I pray God gives your surgeon and surgical team the skills to perform your revision without any complications and I pray you have a speedy, complication-free recovery!

    Really nervous about tomorrow

aloudwhisper Are you revising to a sleeve? or just removing it? Good luck either way seems like you will be happy to get rid of your band. Embrace not what I want to hear weeks before my revision from band to sleeve but I will be prepared.

    QUESTION

I agree with u whole heartedly-- but I'm happy for my decision if I could just get past this first month I think I will be great-- the band taught me portion control -- now the bypass will make me make better choices on the small portions

It will get better, I had gastric bypass on 8.8.12 an was in the hospital for 3 days I was in Alil pain but not as much just take ur meds an u will sleep an feel comfy
  16. There are indeed some people that get a leak weeks after surgery, and sometimes there is no easy way to tell why this happens. People who have band to sleeve revisions seem to have issues - perhaps because of tissue erosion from the band that changes the density of the stomach tissue and it has to heal properly. Others no doubt overwhelm the sleeve by eating too much or having carbonated beverages that expand the stomach before it's properly healed. The stages of eating are there for a reason...it makes sense to go err on the side of caution and go easy.

    Scared

@mimi I decided a year ago to take this journey because i knew i needed it. But something kept nagging at me. It was fear of the unknown. Doubts if I can actually stop eating all the things I love to eat. I said if I do surgery it would be the lapband because it is less invasive. But it is still surgery with possible complications, as with any surgery. Further down the line a thought creeped in my head to just do the bypass surgery and I would look slim and trim really fast. But that thought was shot down fast. I let a few months go by before I went back for an appointment and said ok this is it I'm going to follow through and complete the test required. Then I slacked off again. Mimi I just wasn't at peace in my spirit about the surgery. I had all the if's and but's about the surgery. Images of all kinds of happenings. It wasn't until 3 months ago that I made up my mind as I looked at my health condition which was getting worst. What I did was first made up my mind, Pray and turned it over to God. I know that praying sometimes is not the answer some look for, because they need a spoken voice to soothe them and assure them. But in reality nothing is sure. But if you sit still and listen to that quite still voice God will give you direction. If you can't hear Him, then he will order your steps and lead you in the right direction. As for me I finally have a Peace in my spirit about my surgery coming up, and everytime a negative thought creep in my head, I quickly cast that thought down. Then I think of something else. I'm not going to lie to you and say just because I have a Peace I'm 100% not nervous. I'm excited and sort of nervous at the same time. Only because it is life changing. The Peace I speak of is a settling in my Spirit that I know this is best for me, my mind is no longer undecided. What really helped me is this website, it's not a day go by that I'm not reading these post and searching for answers. People on here are very supportive, and I appreciate everyone with the courage to ask and give support. I know this is a long long post, but I wanted you to know that you are not alone. I was given great advice throughout my life at certain times. I would like to share a couple of them with you. I was told when my mind was confused and had to make a decision for me to stop going back and forth. Just make a decision whether it is right or wrong. Also if someone else can do it, so can you. Hope this helped Good luck
  19. This is a very interesting topic to me, as I am wanting the lap band done. My husband had the gastric bypass. He has lost an extreme amount of weight, with little problems. I think seeing all the information as we do (he never joined a support group, or web group) can be a little scary--don't get me wrong, information is a good thing, it can just be a little frightening at times--I try to keep a focus on the good results people have, and hope that I'm one of those! I think the topic of sweets is interesting as he will eat just a little now and then with no problem. Best wishes for your final decision.

    Relationships?

Thanks for the response. My guy is on the heavy side, but unfortunately weighs less than me:eek His weight goes up and down. When I first started to look into WLS this past summer, he decided to go on Optifast. He lost 30-40 lbs, and had more to go. He told me afterwards that he went on Optifast to show me that weight can be lost without surgery. As much as I've told him that I have faced the fact that I can't do it alone, he claims it can be done. (He was furious at me when I was considering gastric bypass. But then I met a bandster at a surgeon's open house, and decided that this was the way to go). P.S. My guy has since gained all the lost optifast weight back.

    Roux-En-Y or Lap Band

This is such a favorite topic on this board! I don't think that there is a right or wrong answer. For me, I have known people with bypass who regained. My doctor liked the band for me because of my age, my BMI and because I would like to have kids in the future. Personally, I liked the fact that it is adjustable and less invasive. I understood that there is a small percentage of people that it does not work for but I figured I could always try another surgery if this less invasive one did not work for me. My doctor described it as a tool but one that is less powerful then the other options. I was ok with that because I wanted to try to change eating and exercise on my own - I have found it to be very powerful and I don't really even have great restriction yet. Good luck!

    Roux-En-Y or Lap Band

I don't think the idea that you should exercise for the band to work well should scare you off the surgery. Frankly, though I'm 52 years old, I have had no regular exercise program at all until the last 6 weeks, and lost over 100 pounds in 14 months anyway. If you follow the food rules stringently, you can still lose rapidly. And as you slim down, you will feel more energy and will become more active. I love my walks now, becasue my knees don't hurt and I don't feel like I'm struggling for breath. It feels good. I don't work out an hour or more a day, I just walk for 40 minutes 5 days a week, and now am incorporating some mild strength exercising 3 times a week. It's what every healthy person should do, even bypass patients, that's all. The beauty of the band is most people can lose the weight by doing what works for them, as long as they follow the basic rules for eating.

    Band to Bypass discussion

Doer, boy was I happy to read your post!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing. It's nice to know I'm not alone. My doc is super nice but he doesn't tell me little things like that. With the bypass I almost feel like it's all willpower because there is little restriction. I never read that anywhere. I was nervous like the surgery didn't take or something. I mean the extreme weight loss is from food restriction and following the diet stages. I guess how the bypass helps is with not having hunger. Still learning and getting to know my new tool. Thanks for sharing.
  24. HI everyone, I just had my Lap Band out 2 weeks ago. I am into the healing stage. So in 3 months I'll have the bypass. Excited. Has anyone out there that has gone down this path? Would love to hear it went for you. Are you happier with the bypass. Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App
