How was the 2 week liquid diet
Sunnyer replied to ShannyG's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My clinic didn't require us to do a liquid diet pre op. They only asked me to lose a certain amount of weight before surgery and suggested a low carb diet, but didn't require any special form of diet. I was on vacation in July and pretty much ate and drank whatever I wanted for three weeks, and still lost two kilos (4.4 pounds). After that, I only had one more kilo (2.2. pounds) to lose before surgery and that was pretty easy. I just didn't eat added sugar and tried to stick to meat and veg. -
Loosing teeth after gastric bypass and the easy way out?
ShoppGirl replied to Erin18's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am so glad that I stumbled upon this post because I have somewhat unexplained dental issues and I am going to ask if they are possibly related to sleeve. I have been going to the dentist twice a year since I had teeth, religiously. I have had a few small cavities over the years but fortunately no issues beyond that. All fillings have to be replaced eventually so I was not totally surprised when my dentist found a chip in a filling (this was the first one I have ever had that chipped) When he found THREE chipped fillings though, I admit I was a little shocked. I mean, same time last year I had my teeth checked by the same dentist and had zero issues (plus the hygienist cleaned them 6 months ago and didn’t notice anything) so within a period of 6-12 months three fillings are beginning to fail?? This dentist took over the practice a couple years ago, he bought it from my favorite dentist who retired but my hygienist is still there so I just kept going. Well my first thought was is this guy just trying to make a bunch of money off of me by saying my fillings are chipped? I even considered getting a second opinion but of course I’d have to pay for that and I know the fillings will be due to be replaced anytime now. Well, now I am wondering if the acid is making the fillings wear faster because of the surgery?? My appointment is in a couple weeks. I will definitely be asking his opinion on this and what if anything I can do. I know it’s not a vitamin issue because i am very good about those and my labs have been excellent. For what it’s worth if it IS related to surgery though I did not have any vomiting or reflux. I did not have issues getting protein or vitamins. Didn’t even lose any hair?? This could all be total coincidence but it sure seems suspicious time wise. -
August 24!

One week appointment went very well. I got three out of four drains removed, and potentially getting the fourth drain removed on Friday if I can keep my output below 20 each day. They took all the tape off of the incisions, which wasn’t very painful but did it feel weird. When they were taking stitches out of my bellybutton I could feel clearly that they were touching the skin on the side of my abdomen, despite the fact that that skin is now in the center of my stomach. I think I am going to need to reroute some nerves or some thing. Ha! Due to the fact that there was so much loose skin on my upper body, they ended up actually having to do an upper body lift at the same time. So my incisions run all the way from my elbows through my under arms and underneath my boobs. I am happy with this, because I had such trouble with skin spilling out in my under arm area that I really was concerned if they left any skin there what it was going to look like a postop. It’s probably going to be a longer recovery because of the additional area, but I am OK with that. Still not in any significant pain, although riding to and from the appointment and getting the tape and drains out absolutely tuckered me out for the day yesterday. I guess it’s hard to judge how much energy you have when you were spending all day and a recliner watching an old season of project runway. My left arm is still significantly swollen, and missing some feeling on the lower bottom part of my arm. Hoping that resolves once the swelling goes down, whenever that is. -
September surgery buddies!!
La El replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today was my pre op appointments. I first met with the resident, then the surgeon and then the nutritionist. Then I went for my Covid test and then on to anesthesia and finally the lab. It was a busy day, but I managed to stop on the way home for a hair cut. 😅 I am starving!!! Today I drank three Gatorade Zero with protein, 3 sf jello cups, the broth from a can of chicken noodle soup mixed with a packet of ProCel for an extra 10 G protein…and probably half a box of sf popsicles. Okay, not really…but a LOT of popsicles. One more day and then surgery. Hopefully I won’t be hungry anymore after that. A big, fat taco with mild sauce would taste so good! -
I had a patch from the surgery for three days, that seemed to work really well. I had an Rx from before the surgery and I was told I could take if needed after. If I take it early enough it helps. If I wait to long nothing seems to help. Also if I get even slightly dehydrated I feel nauseous. I was getting sick from my protein shakes (too many) so I cut back to no more than 1 fairlife a day and break it up (only a few ounces at a time) then I seem to be ok. I’ve been doing pretty well with chicken salad and high protein foods - I just have to eat 5 or 6 smaller meals… if I try to eat 3 I don’t feel well. It’s to much at one time. RealGood brand frozen dinners are a higher protein and I’ve tolerated those well puréed. Texture is a little weird - but I got used to it. (One more week until no more purées - I’m hoping that makes it even easier) Maybe check with your team and see if they are willing to prescribe something or if they are ok with you pcp prescribing something.

I'm three weeks post op, and I never really feel comfortable. I use myfitnesspal and measure my food in order to eat appropriate amounts. I do feel better now that I can eat actual food and not just soups or protein drinks, which I frankly found revolting. Now, I mostly eat white fish and chicken, hummus, refried beans, mashed baked beans, eggs etc. But even though I eat small amounts and try to eat slow, I usually feel nauseous after I eat, and also between meals. So many things disgust me now. I bought sugar free juice drinks, in order to drink something other than water, but they make me nauseous. Is this normal? Does everyone feel like this? Does it get better? Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get rid of nausea?

you're probably going through the infamous "three week stall" early. I did as well - mine was weeks 2 and 3. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. As long as you stick to the program, the stall will eventually break and you'll be on your way again. They usually last 1-3 weeks. constipation is a common issue for WLS patients. It's due to the high protein diet and some of the supplements some of us take (i.e., calcium and iron - both known to back people up). I've been taking a capful of Miralax every morning for years, and so do a lot of others. Other people take things like stool softeners or magnesium tablets - whatever works!

You’ll discover your body reacts very differently after surgery. Besides changes to your metabolic rate, body set point (the weight your body is happy at), there are hormonal changes (hunger, satiation, etc.), reduction of the volume of food you can eat, etc. the most important change, & the one you have to do the work for, is the change in how you look at eating: what you ate & why you ate. Like most of us before surgery, we could diet, lose weight & then watch the weight come back again. I know it was because once I stopped the diet, I went back to eating in the same way I had before I lost weight. The diets I were on also didn’t change my set point like the surgery did so I would eventually revert to that higher weight again. And the more restrictive the duet, the slower & harder it was to lose. The surgery allowed me the time to change a lot about how & what I eat & understand why I ate. Three years out, I don’t consider I’m on a diet. This is just how & what I eat. And I feel way better for it. Fluctuations are part of life, even more so if you’re female (hormones are a b*tch). You never eat or drink the exact same thing every day. You don’t poop or pee the same amount every day. I know my fluctuation is usually about a a kg. And if I have a pee night ( peed every 30 mins for 3 hrs last night) I can weigh 500g less the next morning. You have to either accept the fluctuations or keep off the scales every day. Weight loss is NEVER a straight downward line. It goes up & down, zigs & zags. As long as the general trend is downwards, you’re fine.

Was Just told not a good candidate for surgery by nutritionist
LookingForward22 replied to SymphonyOfDreams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
In my experience and opinion, take this as a good thing and the time to address any issues that might trip you up. The surgery can be a great tool, but the head hunger and the psychological component is equally important. A pass on to surgery with no real guidance was a big red flag and one of the reasons I left my first program. Without that guidance I didn’t think I could be successful. My new program had the guidance and support I felt I needed to be more successful. Mine was a three month program and there were times I wish it had been 6. I managed to get everything in… and feel fairly confident in my path. Best of luck. That time will fly by!!! -
During the healing phase of weight loss surgery, your weight will fluctuate for various reasons. You're healing from major surgery, just follow your program recommendations and have realistic expectations. You're three weeks post op, and that's when the majority of wls patients experience their first stall, which can also include some weight fluctuations like you described. My weight increased and decreased and bounced around a bit during the healing phase, I stayed focused on hitting my fluid and protein goals, and today I'm 6 weeks post op revision to RNY and the weight is falling off now, because I'm past the healing phase and back to exercisisng. I started losing fat and gaining muscle pretty soon after surgery, according to my smart scale. Muscle weighs more than fat, so even tho I was losing fat, I was gaining muscle, so the scale didn't move, but I was losing inches, my clothes were getting bigger. Just keep doing what your team told you to do and you will be fine.

Caffeine!!!!
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to SuziDavis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nobody ever told me anything regarding coffee, so I just kept on with what I was doing. I drank coffee up to the day before surgery, and I had coffee three days post surgery. I’m currently almost 2 years out and I drink a ton of coffee every day, and I have never had any issues whatsoever. Interestingly enough I just had a pretty big plastic surgery operation less than a week ago, and my anesthesiologist asked me to have black coffee the morning of my afternoon surgery since she said she hates to have people have caffeine headaches post surgery, and there is absolutely no medical reason to not drink it. So there’s that as well. -
i never wore a binder and this incision has not hurt until yesterday. It's just so weird to get a new type of pain three weeks after the surgery. I did email a nurse at the hospital, and she sent me a reply with more questions. I replied to her, but they're closed now. It's not acute pain, just a sting now and then, and when I lean forward etc. I don't have a fever or increased heartbeat, so it's probably not that serious.

Is it normal to feel pain three weeks after gastric sleeve surgery? I have been relatively pain free after the first week, but today and yesterday I've had aches and pain in one of my incision sites and also in general around my midsection. Is this normal, or should I have it looked at?

Today I gained weight for the second time since I had the gastric sleeve surgery three weeks ago. I was 700 grams heavier today than I was yesterday, or 1,5 pounds. Last time this happened was a week after the procedure, when I gained 400 grams one day (a little under a pound) and then the day after I weighed the same as I did two days before. I weigh myself every day, and have done for a long time. I realise that weight fluctuations can happen, but I'm still a little shaken that they can happen when I'm only eating a few hundred calories per day. Yesterday, I ate around 800 calories, which is about the highest I've gone. Usually, I'm around 4-500 and not really hitting my protein target. I am hitting my water targets, so I'm not dehydrated. According to the UCLA Center for human nutrition, most people need at least 1200 calories per day just to survive, and eating less than 1000 is essentially starvation. So how can I gain weight on what is essentially a starvation diet? I'm not working out a lot, but I walk to and from work every day..

I'm six weeks post op tomorrow and I switched to capsules about ten days ago and have had no issues. The chewables are gross and overpriced. I just couldn't bring myself to order another bottle of chewables for $30. I can get a three month supply of capsules for less than the cost of one month of chewables. I was supposed to remain on chewables for three months, but oh well, lol.

I looked it up because I haven’t had my follow up and it was one of the questions I meant to ask. Now I’m not a medical expert and I don’t believe in being an internet doctor but it might help you. Here’s what I found. “Can you take pills after gastric bypass? Capsule, chewable and liquid medications can be taken immediately after surgery, but tablet medications need to be broken up or crushed for the first three months. This prevents medications from getting stuck in the digestive tract or not being fully absorbed.” I think if you think you can tolerate it than you can probably take it. I took a 500mg Tylenol tablet last night and didn’t have an issue. (And I did not crush it because it was late at night and I didn’t even think about).

I agree. While you're waiting for your appointment, you could start back on a bariatric multivitamin once a day and calcium citrate three times a day. I've linked the bariatric vitamin I use. It has iron in it, so you should wait two hours before taking the calcium. They tell me that chemically, iron and calcium are both anions. Our post-surgery bodies have a limited capacity for absorption, so if you take two anions at the same time, the amount of each that's actually absorbed is unpredictable. (My last chemistry course was almost 50 years ago, so it was a stretch to remember this stuff.) You need calcium citrate because more easily soluble than the more common and cheaper calcium carbonate. If you need more iron, you'll need ferrous gluconate rather than ferrous sulfate for the same reason. Your doc will tell you whether you need iron based on the blood work. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HZ3YQ5X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Length of time on PPI or other antiacid
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Tomo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm on Pantoprazole also. I'm almost six weeks post op revision, and I have to only take it for three months and then I can discontinue it. I don't want to continue on a PPI any longer than I have to due to their side effects. -
it's actually just been three days since their surgery

As @catwoman7 said, this is very common. You may need something stronger than the traditional treatments as it’s been a week. Because constipation becomes a bit of a battle while losing. I tried to keep on top of my BMs to avoid the discomfort/pain when things finally got moving if it went too many days. I’d take a stool softener if I hadn’t passed anything after three days. Add some non swelling soluble fibre to your shakes or soups to help. ((I used Benefibre.) All the best.

Totally messed up on liquid diet post op - help
Arabesque replied to rtbh155's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was a one off occurrence so you’ll probably be ok. You were at least conscious of what choices you could make in the situation & know new fur the future. During the whole time you are losing, travelling for a day or for longer times will require a little planning ahead in regard to your food options. The stage you’re at, where you are going & what might be available will influence how much & what food you’ll need to take with you. To give you some ideas: Pack a small esky/cooler with appropriate food options. If travelling over a number of days, add fresh food you are able to eat from local stores (cheese, yoghurts, fruit, etc.) & replenish the ice unless you can refreeze ice bricks overnight. Choose packet options for soup & shakes which you mix with water when you arrive or along the journey. Pack high protein snacks like protein bars, nuts, beef jerky, etc. which are easily transportable & generally don’t spoil. I’m three years out & whenever I travel, holiday, etc., I still take an emergency pack of ‘just in case’ foods options. I don’t need them in the same way but you never know. I used to always carry a protein bar in my bag but they would become heat affected & inedible. Now I just try to remember to throw something in my bag if I think I might need it. Of course the times I forget I usually need it most. -
This is exactly what I did. I went from the high salt nicotine to zero nicotine and had zero symptoms of giving up nicotine. It was like magic. It took three weeks for me to test nicotine and cotinine free on the Amazon strip tests, and at 4 weeks, I also tested negative on the blood test ordered by the surgeon's office.

Wanted to recommend a product! i ordered some Millie’s Sipping broth and they are fantastic. Really lovely savory flavors while being low carb, low calories. These will be a great addition when I am in the liquid phase. i got four packets with three broth bags each - Tomato Basil, Spicy Tortilla, Thai Lemongrass, and Delight Pho The flavors really hit that mental satisfaction for food with me. Comfort in a cup!

How painful is gastric sleeve post-op?
LookingForward22 replied to LaLaLand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Everyone is different, but this is my experience. I was given meds before surgery to help with after. Immediately after surgery I had gas pain, as expected. It was notable, but manageable and it disappeared quickly. In the hospital they gave me a muscle relaxer (made me sleepy), medicine for nerve pain (had that for three days post release), and Tylenol. I also woke up from surgery with a binder on. I was walking and moving pretty easily that day, I was sore… but honestly once the gas pain dissipated, it was really manageable. I was there over night, and walking pretty normally by discharge. I’d say I mostly had discomfort - certainly pain if I moved around to quickly (bend or reach) but it was not sustained. I also used heat packs in the hospital and shortly after - and ice packs on my incision where my stomach came out and over areas of the nerve pain. Today I’m 10 days out… I still experience some mild nerve pain (but not bad at all). Of my 5 incisions, only the one where the removal was is at all tender around the incisions area - but that’s more of an intense bruise feeling. I still wear my binder as it helps keep the skin pulling but I carry a lot of my weight in my abdomen. I take Tylenol occasionally - but really needed all the time. -
Hello everyone, I have a question that I hate to ask but is there anyone that has experienced at least the step three or four diet that still takes super small bites and waits minutes in between each one or will I eventually be able to eat bigger bites? I have this fear that I might bite off more than I can chew literally when I’m able to eat solid foods and would love some feedback! Thanks I’m advance
