  1. I just had gastric bypass on the 28th and was discharged today. I feel nothing hunger wise and do not even feel the desire to eat or drink. My surgeon blessed me to do full liquids this morning when he saw me so I started with the protein shakes and barely got an ounce in since I've been home. Tomorrow I'll definitely try harder to get everything in but they're ok if I don't, in fact, the dietician said I probably wouldn't get it all in for the first month.

    FEP Blue Approval Time

Hey all! I got an answer after a week, my surgeons office called me to let me know then a couple days later I got the letter and I think I got a phone call from the pre-op nurse after my surgeons office called. I had gastric bypass on Aug 28 and just got discharged today.

    Bypass or Sleeve

I just had surgery Wednesday and my doctor did not want to do the sleeve at all on me because I have acid reflux. Mine is silent, meaning I have zero symptoms, but it had already caused damage in my esophagus. He said the bypass was much better for those with reflux because the sleeve can make it worse.
  4. Hi all, I had my gastric bypass just over 3 weeks ago, I’m now on the mushy food stage. I don’t think that I’m overeating and have never pushed myself to a point where I feel sick but I’m really unsure of how much food I should be eating. I’m not overeating I know that but my weight has stalled and I’m wondering if I’m not eating enough. I have a bit of a challenge drinking my full quota but do force myself . I’m not hungry so also have to force myself to eat. Was just wondering as an example how many tablespoons of food should I be eating each meal time? And if anyone has any tips. Any help would be appreciated

    The Maintenance Thread

I think you need to text him and ask him out! What is esophageal webbing and how do you resolve it? Sorry to hear about your emergency endo! So glad the bypass is looking awesome!!! Yay, you!!! Yay on travelling!

    The Maintenance Thread

Ive been super busy running around and lightly traveling. I didn't share because im still in the testing phase. Needed an emergency endo and another on the way. I have esophageal webbing but it should be easily resolved. My bypass however looks superb 😂 Cant find a pic of him anywhere not even healthgrades but believe me ...🔥 Bonus: he's already seen me naked ☺
  7. Hi all... RnY bypass on 8/26/19. Would love to hear all the tricks on making sure to get all the water and the protein drinks in and still adhere to the waiting 30 mins between eating and drinking. I struggled today and would love to know how everyone does it. Thank you!!
  8. That is very odd for a medically necessary revision due to GERD. Did the insurance company even read your history? Maybe surgeon can fight the six month wait?
  9. I’m about 12 days out from gastric bypass. I had no problem getting down fluids during the all liquid phase. Now I am on soft/puréed, which is a little bit harder. But my concern is that I do get hunger pangs. And also that I never feel full? I’m really scared to overdo it and be in pain. So I have 1/2 a scrambled egg for breakfast and then measure out 1/2 cup of food for other meals. Did anyone else feel like it’s hard to notice the restriction on soft foods? I’m hoping it is easier to feel on solid foods, when I get to that point.
  10. Well, that was a horrendous experience. BUT, all is well now. My gastric sleeve was performed on August 12th 2019. All the pre-op stuff was fine and I was excited and looking forward to a quick exit on day 2. I notice that most of you are in the USA, which I am not so there are a few things we do differently. My blood's were all good and the day before my op I just had to ring the private hospital I was going to, to check on what time my admission was on the Monday. I was first on the list for the day so was taken to theatre at 0830am. I hopped onto the operating table myself, which was a bit weird, but I know some places do it this way. I was just trying not to stress and go with the flow! Cannulas were inserted into both hands and then off to the land of fairies I went. I am oblivious to how much later I woke, but I was in absolute agony and the Dr's struggled to get my pain under control. Eventually, after lots of vague voices/mumbling/crying, I must have zonked out again before being taken back to my room. Now the next 8 days are a bit jumbled and blurred. My family have clarified some things for me so I 'kind of' have a correct recollection of events. I was in constant and severe abdominal pain. I could not stop vomiting. I could not keep in 2.5ml of water per 5 mins. By Day 8 post-op, my Surgeon decided to do a Dilation via Endoscope because he had decided that I had a constriction. By this stage, I was on regular morphine, IV potassium (it had dropped due to the vomiting) and constant fluid balance. As you can imagine I was desperate and delirious by this point. I woke from the endoscopy....in the same pain, still unable to hold anything in. I'm not sure how soon after this I was transferred via emergency ambulance to the big local hospital and had a revision done, so have ended up with a '1 anastomosis bypass'. Finally being able to drink and keep it down was amazing and such a huge relief. Lots of other bits went on during all this as I had to have a midline catheter put in rather than the normal cannulae that you would have in your hands/arms etc, lots of medication tweaking, iv fluids, blood tests etc So you can see my abdomen day 1, then a few days later and then starting to fade well today All in the wrong order lol the middle pic is today. I also had a fall in the bathroom on the 20th and landed on the toilet, I only vaguely remember the fall and thought I had broken my ribs (obvs hadn't), then had no recollection of the fall for a few days lol! ANYWAY! Now the horror is over and I am finally home, I am tolerating protein fluids well, got my high protein milk made up and add it to my breakfast smoothie and tomato/chicken soup. Not so keen on the slight texture the protein powder leaves in my mouth but hey ho. I am super weak and wobbly and showering myself and getting my 'drinks' are my limit, but just trying to do a little more each time I stand up AND I must remember I had not 1 but 2 major ops plus all the stress and strain in between I am absolutely dying to taste REAL food and not thick claggy high protein things with so much sweetness. Even tinned soup is too sweet sigh I have my 2 weeks follow up with my surgeon and Dietician next week. Weight is falling off I have lost 15kg/33lbs to date
  11. Hello Everyone, I was banded 2/27/2012. The band has been nothing but problems for me. My primary doctor has been wanting me to get this removed but I was scared. The doctor that did my lapband isn’t doing it anymore so I had to find another surgeon. I finally had my appointment with him and couldn’t be happier. I did loose some weight but back at 230. My lowest was only 186 in 2014. I am having a revision to the sleeve. Can’t wait for my surgery date but I am excited.

    Lap band removed

Your insurance won't cover a new WLS procedure even though you meet the requirements because you had LapBand previously? Are you trying to get another LapBand replaced or want bypass or sleeve or something else? Do you own a home? You can always see if you can get a home equity loan - they look more at appraised value of your house than your credit when giving you that loan.
  13. I had my revision on August 21st, so as of right now I’m one week post-op. I’m still having a lot of pain where they “did all of the work”. It’s almost like a burning/sharp pain every time I move or walk. Did anyone else experience this a few days after surgery? I know there’s going to be some pain during the healing process, but this doesn’t feel normal.
  14. I feel great today!!! One step closer to my goal! I am 7 months post op. Had Rny Jan 27, 2019. Made it to onederland today!!!!!! Brings me to 198lbs current weight.

    Revise Sleeve to Bypass

My surgeon said that an RnY on a "virgin" stomach is more restrictive than on a revision. However, adding the malabsorption is what would improve weight loss. This was why I chose the sleeve initially. I really didn't want to deal with malabsorption issues, but you gotta take it as it comes. Still no nsaids, though. Good luck with your surgeon appointment. Let us know how it goes.

    Just Ugg and Venting

I'm not really asking for advice, I just need to rant somewhere. And my friends have heard enough of it. Don't have a therapy appoint for another couple weeks. So I came here. Had my 9 month (well, because of delays 10 month) check up today. Ever since February, I've felt rotten. The reflux has gotten better, but I'm still pretty much unable to eat much other than soft foods. Sometimes I can eat fish or tofu, but they usually cause pain. Sometimes terrible pain. I've also had a migraine for 3 months now. Doc says that the food issues may be caused by a small hernia, and to fix that he'd need to convert to bypass. Which for a whole host of reasons I can't do. And he's not actually sure the hernia is causing it. So now I'm left to know that I did this horrible thing to myself to feel better and stave off future health issues - I really couldn't give two craps what I look like. Instead I feel like crap on a stick every day - and apparently that isn't going to change. I feel like I I made this huge decision that has made my life worse, and there just isn't anything I can do about it. I DREAM of veggies - especially nice, crisp raw veggies. My diet was so varied and healthy before - I ate mostly fish/veg, but a lot. And now 90% of my diet is dairy. Which I don't even like. It is just so hard to know I've made a decision to try to make my life better which made my life worse. THis is all compounded by the terrible migraines. So, I'm just tired. And venting. But, he basically released me to not see him anymore if I get my bloodwork done by my GP. So there's that. And at least he didn't say that patronizing thing that most people say - "Well, but at least you lost all that weight, that has to feel good." No, no it doesn't.

    Revise Sleeve to Bypass

Hi Orchid thanks for your feed back. I always thought bypass was stronger than the sleeve and it was more effective with longterm weight-loss. Its good to know it instantly resolved your reflux issues though. Do you take nsaids with the RnY? I have my 1 year follow up next month with my surgeon to talk about these things.

    Revise Sleeve to Bypass

I was sleeved in Feb. 2018, revised to RnY Oct. 2018 for reflux. I was taking the max dose of prescription omeprazole twice a day plus Tums, as needed. Still woke up sometimes with acid in my nose. I had not had reflux prior to the sleeve surgery. The RnY did completely resolve the GERD issue, but I miss the restriction I had with my sleeve. It was really tight, which I considered a good thing. I do have restriction with the RnY, but nowhere near as much. Regardless, I am happy I had the revision before I destroyed my esophagus and teeth.

    Revise Sleeve to Bypass

hey, sorry you are so uncomfortable with the reflux and yeah why did they not say about it and suggest a bypass initially? I had a sleeve on Aug 12th then a bypass on 21st due to a volvulus forming, so altho i have had it all done, it happened in a morphine cloud of agony. Good luck
  20. Hello Sleevers, has anyone revised their sleeve to a bypass surgery? Can you explain how it went and how was the journey? I am seriously considering this due to a major increase in reflux after my sleeve. I went from taking a prilosec once in a while or when needed (before sleeve) to 2 doses everyday (post surgery) to stay reflux free. I feel I would had been a good bypass candidate due to my Gerd history something my surgeon did not inform me of nor did I know until further investigating. The bypass surgery disables gastric juices from flowing back up instantly relieving the need for PPI. I am overall satisfied with the sleeve however I am not too thrilled about the amount of PPI medication I now have to take due to its longterm side effects.

    August 2019 Check In

hey you shouldn't be in this much pain and you should be able to sip easily. Go get a check-up from the bariatric team, I ended up with a volvulus and ended up having a 2nd emergency op on 21st Aug, after I had an endoscopic dilation that didn't work !! I couldn't keep anything down and was in severe pain. So ended up having my sleeve then bypassed with 1 anastomosis. Some great pics of the state I was in, i shall share later. I was in hospital for 14 nights
  22. I have a BMI of 36. I have not had surgery yet but I am getting the sleeve done in September. I lost 48 pounds on my own. I had many doubts but I had to take in account want I wanted for my future. I have 3 kids that I want to be around for them and possible future grandchildren. The longer you are over weight the more stress your body is in. I don't want life long troubles with diabetes or heart disease. Someone told me to think of the surgery as one tool added to your other methods of lossing weight. Even if you have the surgery your still putting in all the work needed to loose the weight. You still choose what you eat and you still have to exercise. I have not had a life long struggle with weight. I had some health issues that brought on some weight. In 2016 I had a complete hysterectomy. I went to 135lbs. Then I went to 165lbs when my daughter was admitted to the hospital for 3 months. I got down to 150 lbs until April 2018 when I broke my ankle. I went up to 238 lbs. I am now down to 193 lbs. I have injures, I am not as young so my metabolism is not what it use to be. I need an assist. I choose surgery. My primary doctor did not know much about weight loss surgery when I asked for a referral. I saw him today for my 3 month A1C. He said he started looking into the surgeries and agreed with me that the sleeve was a good option due to my diabetes, sleep apnea, and high cholesterol. My bariatric doctor told me people with a BMI as low as 30, in other countries are getting weight loss surgery ( mostly gastric bypass) to treat diabetes. My bariatric doctor asked me if I had cancer would I get chemotherapy or radiation? I said yes. I have decided on getting the VGS. This surgery reduces the size of my stomach, removes the part of the stomach that controls hunger hormones and cravings among other things. On the emotional relationship for food, I believe we all have an emotional relationship with food on some degree. If you want to be well educated and get the best result out of surgery I would suggest seeing a therapist. Even if you don't have surgery see a therapist. You need to know what triggers you to eat and learn alternate and positive coping techniques. You can read any story anyone shares on this sight and the biggest reason they choose surgery is to be at a healthier weight regardless of what their BMI number started at. I hope this helps you. I find out my surgery date this Friday. So my date will be some time this September. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Any August Sleevers out there?

Hello August sleevers, my anniversary is on the 29th and I have lost 75lbs exactly in a year. I was 275 on surgery date and now I weigh 200. I feel very good for the most part except for my increase of acid reflux symptoms after surgery. Are any of us on any type of PPIs like Prilosec or Nexium due to reflux??? Since surgery I have been on 40 mgs a day to stay reflux free, I have started to take it to once a day. I suffered from gerd before this surgery but now with the sleeve acid reflux is more active even though I am thin now. I personally think I should had went with a bypass instead of the sleeve due to my Gerd history. I would like revise my surgery to a bypass to complete eliminate having to take any PPIs. Something these doctors are not telling us is the dangers of longterm use of PPIs.
  24. If you are still continually having pain, it could be a number of things. I was 4 months out when I started having pain there. I was so tired, and felt Ill all over. Severe pains, finally went in. I was having a bowel rupture, and had to have emergency surgery. The rupture was at the site where the surgical connection site was during my bypass. I pray that isn’t it, but the CT scan can definitely give the doctors a better look at what is going on.  My case is very rare.

    I need advice

I’m over three months post op and I have absolutely loved my bypass until a few weeks ago when it was time to go back to school. My stomach is making very loud noises during lectures and having 150 students look at me because it’s distracting them is beyond embarrassing for me. I’ve tried everything I can think of. Different foods, eating before lectures, even during. I tried not eating an hour before thinking maybe the noise was my stomach digesting. But no matter what I try I can’t seem to do anything about it and if this doesn’t change I don’t think I can handle being in class. It would suck to switch to online classes. Hoping any of you have tips on what might help!
