Struggling with not eating post op
Sassafrassa replied to jensjourney82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had a few emotional spots and I was sleeved on Dec 19 but have coped better than expected. I find the thing that gets me is watching people take a big 'normal' bite of a food I cant eat! But it bothers me a little less each day. Even going to the super market is hard for me as you see things you want to try or cook, but you cant. Its all a learning process for us I guess. We just need to hang in there! It was music to my ears when my nutrionist told me I didnt have to force myself to drink Protein shakes!!! She said she was worried if I did I would just not eat or drink anything cos I would make myself sick. Looking at getting my protein from other food and drinks. Will try Premier Protein shakes from costco though to see if i like them. -
@blashlee I so agree with this "My frustration with seeing "plus size" models was that they were still a seemingly unattainable standard of beauty and size." It has always been puzzling to me to look through a plus size catalog and see the clothes modeled by someone 5'10" and size 10. I have noticed though that more catalogs and online store-sites are using models that truly look like they wear a plus size.

I was cleared for anything at 5 weeks. Not everything set well the first time I tried it and my doctor said if that happend to try again later. So far the only thing I really don't eat well is oranges. My doctor says the no drinking is to not take up space you need for solid food so I would think that the soup broth is as nutritious as the solids so I do eat soups. I have had no problem losing the weight either. Only 19 lbs to goal! yay

What was your "Yep. I'm getting WLS." moment?
Alex Brecher replied to GranadoM74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my own experience, I didn’t have that many stressful delays or barriers compared to some WLS patients. Maybe it was because this was over 10 years ago, or maybe it was because I was too young to get anxious or discouraged (I was in my mid-20s), or maybe it was because I got lucky. It was probably because I was lucky; nobody and nothing really stood in my way. The way I remember it, I decided to get weight loss surgery after I found out that a formerly obese friend had gotten the lap-band and it worked for him. I made up my mind, found a great surgeon, and got my band. I didn’t have any real setbacks, so I guess as soon as I decided to get the band, that was my “Yep, I’m getting WLS!” moment. It sure felt good to know I may not need to spend the rest of my life fighting food. -
What Made You Choose Vsg Over The Other Procedures?
M2G replied to sleevemeup's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started out wanting a band. I did NOT want bypass as re-routing my intestines and causing malabsorption did not appeal to me. The "idea" of the band sounds great. A smaller stomach means you eat less food and therefore are full on less. However, as I researched the band, I learned about the vomiting (something I cannot deal with!) being stuck and not having food go down, yet still being hungry, etc. I started researching the VSG and while it is a big deal to lose 85% of your stomach, it sounded SO much better than the alternatives. It is purely a restrictive procedure, so you are full on less food. You still have to make good food choices, exercise, plenty of Water, etc. The one thing that I can say that has helped me tremendously is the fact that I do not have hunger. Not every sleever loses their hunger but a large majority do. It's amazingly easy to make good food choices when you are not driven by hunger. I also just had my labs pulled again at my 18 month checkup and everything is completely normal and perfect. My surgeon doesn't even think I need labs again at my 2 year based on my results. I'm almost 19 months post-op and I can't imagine having had any other surgery as I knew VSG was right for me. -
I went to a bariatric specific hospital so my insurance advocate had it on her calendar to request my records from my PCP the day after my last appointment. She submitted it that day and she called me 2 days later with the approval. From there it took 2 buisiness days to get scheduled. My surgery ways 10 days from scheduling. I’m pretty sure my experience is best case senario. I would just make sure to be your own advocate and follow up and make sure records are getting where they need to go.

Thanks! First quick goal is to weigh less than my 19 year old son - he weighs 195 (he's 6 foot 3 but pay no mind to that!) Next goal is 180 as that will be 100 pounds lost. Final goal is somewhere around 160-170 - I will decide as I approach it! Go you! Awesome! Hooray! Go go go!

Decisions, Decisions!!! Which doctor?
Frankie replied to Krista2653's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Krista, I don't know anything about Dr Alvarez since I didn't research him or use him. But I can tell you my experience with Dr Aceves was positive. My insurance did not cover the sleeve and even if it had I wouldn't have been covered since I was a lightweight. I chose Dr Aceves for many of the reasons that Tiffykins listed and also because I had wasted so much time researching the lapband and when I decided I the sleeve was the way to go I just wanted it done before too much more time had passed. I wanted a date without waiting too much longer or jumping through hoops. Money wasn't an issue for me (self-pay lapbad was going to be $20,000 locally and that didn't include fills or followup). So I knew I had to go out of state since at the time no one was doing the sleeve locally. Going to Mexico to Dr Aceves was a no brainer since the recovery was in a hospital and everything was taken care of - and he has tons of experience and great reviews/stats. I had briefly checked out some US physicians and wasn't 100% impressed. If I had wanted to wait longer I might have stayed in the US and gone to Cirangle or Jossart but like I said by that time I just wanted it done. I am a nurse so I am picky and not easily impressed. I would certainly recommend going to Dr Aceves for surgery. Good luck in your journey. Frankie VSG 03/22/10 -
Hi All, I was banded 07/29/13 and have since lost approx. 55-60 pounds (my weight fluctuates between 194-199 now). Anyways, I have monthly checkups with my doctor and have received a fill at every office visit. I am now at 7.5 cc in a 10 cc and STILL don't feel any restriction. I keep my portions small, but typically eat every 2-3 hours. Nurse said I am probably not getting enough Protein in my meals, but I am already eating at least 60g per day. I will try to add more anyways. Since my last fill (.5 cc from 7 to 7.5) I have not lost any weight or felt any different. So my question is, has anyone else had to have THIS many fills before reaching the green zone? I'm starting to worry that something isn't working for me, even though I have no pain or other issues with my band. I know every person is different, just want to hear if anyone else has been in the same boat before. Thanks!!

Welbutrion/buprion and buspiron
Purplrose323 replied to Evolving's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I take the twice a day wellbutrin, it's the only anti depressant that has worked for me and also not increased my appetite. Only side effects I have are sweating, dry mouth and if I take the second one too early insomnia, otherwise it's fine. I cannot take the once a day wellbutrin because then I can't sleep at all. I've been taking it on and off for 10 years or more. Hope this helps. -
6 months out and have been stalled for 2 mths
CowgirlJane replied to brandiga03's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's tough it really is. My weight loss practically stopped about 8 months post op. Culprits were carbs, including Protein bars!! That is when I got serious about carb (basically sugar) control. I also changed up my workout to high intensity shorter duration. I went from losing 2-3 pounds a month back to 10-12 a month and made it to goal. I think you should discuss with a good nutritionalist since nursing adds some nutritional issues I didn't deal with. Hang in there! Kick the sugar/bad carb addiction and life gets better. -

You also might want to try KC Masterpiece "Classic Blend" It has 10 calories and only 2 carbs per serving. KC is usually easier to find. -
How many Calories do you eat?
Jachut replied to mellabella78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm female, 42, 5ft 10, very active (run or do boot campe 5 x per week, work as a teacher, on my feet all day) and I ate around 1500 a day to lose. I think you might be UNDER eating, but really, you've lost a LOT and it does slow down and become very stop start. Just keep at it and eventually it will start coming off again. It took me an entire year to lose the last 10lb. I guess I could have eaten less, but I was happy enough at the higher weight, and I'm very active and now I can eat whatever I want without gaining so I'm really glad that I've obviously preserved lean body mass and have a healthy metabolism. -
HELP surface infection of port site - anyone expereinced?
rhodad posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
 Hi, I have had what he Dr thinks is a surface infection of the port site for a week (banded 4th Feb 10). This is my second round of antiboitics and just not sure if its getting better. It is still hot and very red (about an inch all theway around the wound), and the port site is raised (like someone stuck an egg in there), but is not weaping. Has anyone had this issues? Is swelling of the port site area normal 2-3 weeks post surgury? HELP!! -
Hi all--I was "banded" on July 19/06 in New Brunswick, Canada. So far, so good. I am feeling amazingly well, except for the pesky hunger and my craving of all foods solid...I don't ever want to eat broth again...but I suppose I'll have to. And that case of peach Resource (a clear liquid Protein drink) I bought leers at me from the refrigerator every time I open it YUCK. I get my staples out in two days (YAY) and get a fill in about 3 more wks...about the time I was told I could get back solid food:hungry:...an evil trick I think, because don't I have to "eat" liquids again for a few days after a fill? Anyway, I am excited to be starting this journey and thrilled that the lap band will not only help me take off pounds, but THIS time, help me KEEP off the pounds I lose and the many extra pounds that always accompany the ones I lost in the first place! ~Deb

New Band And I Feel Like A New Man
pegala replied to CalKev's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Kev, I was banded by Dr Ortiz on 9/28 and am SO delighted with everything ..Dr Ortiz and his entire staff and procedure were just fantastic... I am scheduled for my 1st fill 11/10 which will put me at 6 weeks. I have to fly from Florida but I am so impressed by OCC that I would not think of going elsewhere for this 1st fill. Good luck on your journey. Peggy -
I’m only down 19 pounds. I’m starting to get worried. Is anyone else in the same boat??

Revision from Band - Surgeon wants sleeve, I want bypass!
Taunter posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am 3 months into my 6 month pre-op period. I met with the surgeon on Tuesday because I currently have a lapband I want revised. Given my diabetes (diagnosed 10/1/2015), my severe obstructive sleep apnea and being morbidly obese (361 lbs on Tuesday), I've been focused on gastric bypass (RNY). I thought for sure my doctor would recommend that as well. But I could tell from our meeting that he advocates for the sleeve. He says nearly 90% of the surgeries he'll do this year will be sleeve and that sleeve patients are less likely to have future complications and that their labs are "boring" because they don't have nutrient malabsorption issues like bypass patients. Now I'm torn. He says it's up to me - that he'll do the bypass surgery. But I'm wondering if I'm being a polyanna in thinking I won't be one of the ones that has complications. I just feel like the sleeve is a fad - it's what everyone is doing now. But there are only 5 years of available data whereas bypass has been around for 20+. Anyone else have a similar issue? I'm also concerned because I'm a revision patient. I lost about 30+ lbs with the lapband and have kept it off (which the surgeon says is actually successful!!) and I really don't want to do the sleeve and then find myself losing only a fraction of what I need to lose. Any other revision folks out there? -
Hey! We had our birthday on the same date 10/6/2015! Congratulations on making a great decision to make you happy. It is rough right now. All I want to do is take one big bite of a Red Robin Burger! Lol. But.........it's all good. Weight before was 300 now 250! Feeling good looking good

Can not stop losing weight ! hit my goal and than some
theladyslipper replied to Scottyd1264's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My mother had this problem--she was sleeved a year & a half ago and lost around 150 lbs in the first year. She has a hard time eating a lot at a time w/ acid reflux. She's since gained 10-12 lbs, but is around 5'8 and 140. She kind of got scared that if she were to get sick, she'd lose more. Never thought that losing too much could be a problem until I watched her go through it. Good luck increasing calories! -
Thanks for the info guys. I'm not curently on birth control, never have been. My weight loss is starting to slow down since i'm almost 10 months in from surgery i'm maybe only losing a Kilo per week and then some weeks nothing. Me and my husband want to start a family next year.

Lemon is the cure. Suck on lemon flavored hard candy or drink lemonade. Minute maid makes a light lemonade in 2 liters or 12 packs. It's non-carbonated and only has 10 calories. I still remember how horrible that was in the liquid stage!

I was banded on 3/11/10 and I know exactly what u mean. All I can think of is that old habits die hard and this will be a difficult one for me to break because I have realized that I never just ate for hunger alone. The way I see it though....I stopped smoking 25 years ago and remember reading something at that time that said after the first two weeks of stopping a habit (including nicotine) it's only the psychological addiction that could hamper progress. If this is true (and I am tending to believe it), then I need to focus on what my stomach is really saying. That is what I've been trying to do....concentrate on real "stomach/need" not "taste/desire." It hasn't been easy, but the refocusing needs to be done and as with anything else continually reinforced. Hope this helps!

Just thought I would do an update over here. I looked back through this thread and at one point I had -27lbs to get to goal. Well, I've whittled away at that and now need -17lbs to get to goal. WOW! So even though progress is verrrrry slow, I'm working on it. I did really great at the beginning of Jan. when I really buckled down and lost some weight. Then sometime in Feb I sort of lost my momentum, and now it's April and definitely time to buckle down again. I see my surgeon for my 18 month checkup later this month and of course would love to be at my all-time personal low. Starting tomorrow, I'm restricting calories and carbs. I may have to supplement with some Protein Shakes but I'm going to give things a good solid week and see if I can shake lose a lb or two on the old scale. Also, as I read back through this thread I noticed at some point I said that 12's felt tight. I am happy to report that I can wear any size 12 on any brand and none of them are tight. I put on a pair of capri's from last summer that were 14's and they were literally falling off. I can wear some 10's but it's more hit-and-miss depending on the style/brand, etc. Also that damn stomach skin, well, let's just say that 10's usually push the skin around and make it not as attractive. But at least I know that I can actually go into a store, grab a 12 and KNOW that it will fit! Woo hoo for that!!!
