Hi All, Revision from band to bypass was this past Friday 9/13. I was in the hospital until Sunday mid morning. Overall I feel ok. Main issue has been pain and bloating at the top of my stomach. Like right below my sternum. I’ve never really pushed out there much except when I was pregnant and right now I’m looking about 8 months along. Lol🤣😂 Fortunately my incisions haven’t hurt much and liquids are going down very well with no nausea or tummy trouble. Wednesday’s are my usual weigh on days, but given how bloated I am, I’m going to wait a few more days, just so I can try and get a somewhat close to actual starting weight. Hope everyone is doing well!! -
hiya, I'm now in the Uk so had it done here but I went in as an emergency public patient, thank goodness or they would have needed to sell my kidneys to pay for it lol The bruising was just because of fragmin and the meds I was on pre-op, I thought it was cool it looked like snoopy and it looked far worse than it felt! The relief after I had the bypass was HUGE and something like only 0.2% of people has the issue I had.... obviously I am a difficult person lol My surgeon has done zillions of vsg's and I was his first volvulus needing an emergency bypass. So don't worry after reading my story, I have taken one for the team if you look at the % Good luck with your op, you will be fine

5 years out need advice please
FluffyChix replied to heatherjane2505's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I try really hard (especially in losing mode) not to "plan" or "schedule" for cheats. It makes it that much easier to have one...like I've already given myself permission or something so then I get to bypass the rationalization and reasoning phase. Right? LOL. But like @Healthy_life2 said, it's important to know your capacity for pain and/or deprivation. Ideally you want to limit the hedonic pleasure center. When you give yourself high reward, high value meals, it causes your brain to defend a higher set point, making weight loss slow to a creeping crawl. Frustrating and tough to be compliant with slow weight loss. So I would go for painful abrupt deprivation and get the weight back off, then try to ease into a maintenance plan that does include a few limited indulgences that are well planned and can be incorporated into your daily macros for maintenance. But that's just me. I figure I can bear pain as long as I know there is an end. If I add extra treat calories now, I guarantee the compliance will be worse, the losses slower and I will get diet fatigue before ever seeing my goal or finish line. So it's a tough call. Right? Now, YOU are the mommy and the boss of cheese and ketchup. So why can't you clean out the house/pantry? Why not ONLY keep the natural healthy things around? Make it tough for the kids or hubs or you to eat crap!? Would/could that work? If not, I will be back with snack suggestions that you can make yourself rather than buy and it shouldn't totes kill your diet plan. But for now...you have to remember your WHY. WHY did you have the surgery? WHY did you endure the deprivation to lose all your weight? WHY aren't you loving yourself enough to self-discipline your food choices? These are the tough parts of headwork we all have to entertain. ((hugs)) -
Sleeve revision to bypass for GERD and Hiatal Hernia
AZhiker replied to jskittles7694's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Before my surgery, I studied the insurance coverage for bariatric procedures, and downloaded all the forms so I could study them so more. I have BCBS TN and revision is absolutely covered, Just be sure to look at everything real carefully so both you and your surgeon know what the requirements are. -
Sleeve revision to bypass for GERD and Hiatal Hernia
jskittles7694 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the sleeve March 2014 & was good for a couple years, but in 2016 was hospitalized with severe inflammation in my stomach, a large hiatal hernia and GERD. I previously had no history of this prior to surgery. I was prescribed 80mg of omerzapole, carafate and zofran. Been suffering with horrible reflux ever since. In February my pcp added 300mg of zantac. Still no relief and the Bariatric surgeon is now recommending revision to the bypass. Has anyone experienced this? Did the insurance approve the revision for medical reasons? I have BCBS Massachusetts. Thanks in advance -
Medicare coverage for revision
ProudGrammy replied to WOLVESFAN1's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
@WOLVESFAN1 The providers words might be correct - but I am a firm believer in getting "official/important" things in general in writing. Being successful with the sleeve is great, now at a great weight.☺️ i know many ins. companies cover revisions - you might have to work harder with medicare? and since you are no longer overweight - don't know about the coverage Lots of OP revise from sleeve to another WLS due to reflux - hopefully your situation will work out too good luck bud kathy -

☀️ Have you had VSG to Loop DS/ Sadi-s Revision? Share your experience🌙
SlimDreams posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi All! I’m scheduled for a VSG to Loop DS revision next Thursday 9/26/19 with Dr. Walter Medlin In UT. I had VSG in SD with Dr. Takata In 2013, insurance covered it. It was successful and without complications. Pre VSG I was 297+... at my lowest I was at 180, With time and two pregnancies I lost restriction and gained. I was able to lose weight after both pregnancies but was not able to maintain it, or return to the post VSG pre pregnancy low. Despite maintaining a medium level of activity (depending on the week spin class/ triathlons/ 5ks/ 18-30 mi relaxed bike rides on the weekends/ lots of walking), I hovered around 235, now with low activity I’m at 250. I’m in my 2 week preop diet for the revision which is just as tough as I remember it the first time, maybe more. Little nervous for this surgery-more than I remember being for the VSG. This time I’m going in self pay. Confident in my decision but nervous about the immediate aftermath, toilette issues/ rate of loss/ nutrient deficiencies- the usual. Dr doesn’t plan to touch the sleeve, unless any problems are seen in the EDG. I’m loading up on vitamins and supplements now To get ahead of any deficiencies caused by malabsorption in the long run. Dr will determine Common Channel length at time of surgery at the moment it looks like it will be ~300 cm. Has anyone else had Dr. Medlin for their revision? Any tips for immediately after surgery? I’ll be flying back to SD the following Saturday-Anyone have to fly 2 days after surgery? Tips on flying post op, any general post op tips for this specific Bariatric surgery would be appreciated. I plan on updating this thread as I go along, and hope others might find it helpful in their research too. Thanks! -
Hey guys just getting closer to surgery and few small questions. I know they may have been asked similar before. My surgeon last time we spoke said might need like 5 days in hospital for the RNY BYPASS surgery? He says it's very serious surgery and I haven't had any surgery since a teenager and he wants to be double sure I'm right to go home look after myself as I live alone. I've never heard of anyone on this site doing that many days? Some ppl talk about 1 night only or even out patient surgery? I think it may also be that I live about 2.5hrs from the hospital maybe? I'll be seeing surgeon in a week to ask more questions :) just thought I'd see what others experienced?? it's going to be hard on my own having to do my own like cooking and cleaning and stuff

Sleeve to RNY revision for regain
Qwerty098 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had VSG in feb 2016 lost weight rapidly in the first 12 months my starting weight was 134kg (295lbs) and my lowest was 71kg (156lbs). By December 2016 i started getting excruciating pain in my upper abdomen and ended up having an emergency gall bladder removal. Up until December 2018 I continued to experience these gall attacks and would end up in the ER in agony almost once a month and managed the smaller attacks weekly and sometimes daily. I ended up having an ERCP procedure for sphincter of Oddi and since then have gained weight like crazy due to being able to eat without fear of an attack. My current weight is 92kg (202lbs) and I am now considering a revision to RNY I am seeing so many mixed stories of weight loss after revision even some who went on to gain weight. Has anyone had revision for weightloss successfully? Would love to hear your story.- 2 replies

I'm not a revision patient, but at over four years out I can eat anything. Even at two years out, I could eat anything. Most of the restrictions and food intolerances are in the first few months post-surgery. as far as volume, you can eat more and more as time goes on (although just because you CAN doesn't always mean you SHOULD). Right now I would characterize myself as a "light eater". I highly doubt anyone would guess I've had WLS (whereas early out, it was obvious that something was going on). I eat normally, but fairly lightly. Not any different than my regular weight-conscious, normal weight friends eat, really. If I go out, I typically get an appetizer - or a salad - or I'll order an entree and bring half of it home. Most of my naturally thin or weight conscious friends do that, too.

Wondering what is the normal or average experience. I most likely will need a gastric bypass revision surgery, because of stricture issues after sleeve. I’m wondering what I should expect as normal after What is a normal bite full for you? (I currently can only eat a portion similar to a is your limit for food, 1 cup? Currently I can maybe do 1/4 Anything off limits? I currently can’t eat meat unless it’s a crumb size, pills stick, more than tiny sips hurt. Hoping there is a light at the end of this and I can be someone normal. I’m ok with eating less, and also no junk....I just want a normal meal...veggies.,,,meat...... a salad would be heaven

Sleeve to Bypass
johnedwin replied to nomorefattypatty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i saw one doc video and he said converting to a bypass from a sleeve is not worth it for a extra 15- 25 pound weight loss... unless you have serious gerd issues.. if you want the best wls the duodenal switch would be easier for a sleeve patient since it is part of the switch surgery.. but you have to spend 100-200 dollars month on vitamins alone for that procedure.. -
People have died or had horrible complications having their tonsils out (remember the Jahi McMath case?). I also seem to remember some case from a few years ago of someone dying after having their wisdom teeth extracted. But how often does that happen? Almost never. Same with weight loss surgery. The morbidity rate on gastric bypass is 0.3%, and it's even less with the sleeve. So you have a 99.7% or greater chance of pulling through just fine. Horrible complications are very rare, too. It only seems like they're more common than really are because people post about them. They're looking for advice and support. People who have never had a problem don't typically broadcast that fact. So you're getting a very skewed perception. Even minor complications aren't all that common. I had a stricture. Very minor and an easy fix. It happens to about 5% of bypass patients, making it one of the most common complications. I'd hardly call something that happens to 5% of us "common", but there you have it. Complications - minor or otherwise - just aren't all that common. I read those horror stories before I had surgery, too, and they scared the crap out of me. I finally just stopped, realizing that stuff like that almost never happens. My advice is to do the same. Focus on all the success stories instead, as they are INFINITELY more common!!

Hi!
Thank you for replying. It means the world to me. It also confirmed what I been feeling about which procedure to choose. I fall into the category as you do and elected the sleeve as it seemed to be less invasive and recovery would be better and faster, however I am so afraid to regain the weight back since I rarely eat and obesity runs in my family. I have two siblings that had the bypass and they have been successful. My sister was in the high 400's and is about 140 now and has been for several years since her procedure. I guess I felt that the sleeve would allow me to have more control, however I realized that I can't control my genetics and that is one of the biggest reasons that I am here. Yes, I have not always made the best choices but trust me when I say that I have been on the loss and regain + more rollercoaster weight ride for yrs! I have spent so much money as I am sure you have as well as many others who are going through this. It is not easy and anyone who thinks this is a copout is crazy!!! This has been harder than anything I have done including hiring a personal trainer to kick my butt in the gym! And still with all the gym hours, clean eating "not to mention the clean eating cost" I knew it was time that I moved to the next step to finally be who I know in my head and heart cause when I see myself in the mirror, well let's just say is not the girl I see in my mind.
So thanks again for your reply and I hope that we can keep in touch through our journey.

What do you attribute this type of pain to ?
Amburmist replied to KarenLR75's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Karen, I know EXACTLY what u are going thru. It's been happening to me about once a month for the past year. It doesn't happen everytime I have a BM which is why I waited so long to talk to my surgeon. I'm 2 yrs out from bypass surgery btw. The pain is incredibly intense and i can feel the poop moving extremely slowly thru the lower intestines as the pain is happening. The poop will move, intense unbelievable pain happens, poop stops moving, pain eases. Rinse and repeat. I'd be drenched in sweat by the time the cycle stops and sometimes the poop would come out, othertimes not. As much as I want to curl up into a ball, it hurts more when i do that. Once I started stretching my stomach out, like arching my back/leaning back type of position so my guts were as stretched as can be, I found the pain would last for shorter bursts. Still painful but less so. Also, this is going to sound silly but also putting pressure on my lower belly where the pain is and rubbing around in circles or jiggling that area also seems to help the bouts of pain go by quicker. My surgeon immediately told me not to worry, this can unfortunately be a common ailment with bariatric patients, worse in summertime due to dehydration, and it's constipation and/or harder poops. The poop (probably harder, less water in it) is trying to move thru the intestine which is what is causing the pain. I, too, was terribly concerned that it was a twisted intestine or choked bowel or some horrible thing and he assured me it wasn't that. For a couple of reasons: 1. I can have a BM without pain. The excruciating pain doesn't happen every time/day. 2. If it was one of those very rare horrible ailments I was so afraid of, he said it would be OBVIOUS. My other symptoms would be things like uncontrollable vomiting, fever, pain doesn't stop, no bowel movements at all, can't keep food or drink down, etc. Stuff like that. So, he said I needed to incorporate Miralax (polyethylene glycol) daily into my routine immediately, keep trying to drink lots and lots of water, and get more fiber (green veggies and other fibrous foods or fiber supplement). That convo was last week so I'm just starting the new regimine and can't tell u how successful it's been yet, but I'm hopeful. Many other people on this board are also taking daily constipation prevention OTC solutions for the same reasons, so we are not alone. Some folks use Milk of Magnesia once a week and/or daily colace and/or daily magnesium citrate...along with lots of water and fiber of course. Just another thing we need to keep up on in our new "rearranged guts" lives! [emoji6] All that said, I am not a nurse or doctor and above all, if u feel concerned and that u should see a medical professional about your pain, u do it immediately! Don't let anyone stop u or talk u out of it!! Good luck sweety! [emoji106] Sent from my LG-H932 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Usually there's other underlying issues before surgery like ulcers and previous surgery and stuff but as above complications are very minimal at best I think it was like 1% with bypass! Its good to do your research though and be prepared!

Oh, my goodness! For every horror story there are hundreds of success stories! I had gastric bypass on March 27th 2019, and it was the best decision I've ever made. Sure, there are ups and downs, but I've lost more weight than I could have on my own, my diabetes is GONE, I'm off all high blood pressure medication, I can go up and down stairs again, etc!! Please take a deep breath and be positive. You got this! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

I’ve been reading everything I can get my hand on in preparation for my bypass surgery that i should be getting a date for before end of the month. Most of you are so supportive and enthusiastic that it just makes the waiting hard. Until I read a post by a lady that had complications. And when I say complications that is an under statement. She ended up in the hospital over 257 days. Five surgeries. I am now hoping I have made the right choice. I have to lose weight. My health depends on it. I want to lose weight even more. But I don’t want to die either. I need some of your enthusiasm to get me back on track. My daughter (who is 38) says not to worry so much because every surgery known to man has at least one bad story behind it. I agree with that but could just a little if your wisdom to get me re-centered. Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Feeling cold, does it get better with time or a forever thing?
Sheribear68 replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started feeling cold the next day after surgery and I’m still waiting to thaw out. Just this weekend I went to an art exhibit and was FREEZING the whole time I was inside. There was an outdoor courtyard with food and beverages, but security wasn’t letting anyone out there until it was time. I could barely enjoy the art, because I was shivering and finally one of the guys felt sorry for me and let me stand outside for a few minutes before they opened it up. I’m in Oklahoma where the temps are still in the 90’s and I’m cold all of the time. Right now I’m sitting on my couch under a light blanket with yoga pants and a long sleeve t-shirt on. I had a sleeve so it’s not just limited to bypass patients -
Tell me your best vitamin tips with gastric bypass
Stella84 replied to Panda333's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had never taken vitamins before with the lapband so it was hard to get used to, but I'm four months out from revision to RNY and just had all my labs come back perfect! Here are the two things that helped me be successful: 1. I got one of these pill organizers with multiple compartments for each day and fill it up every Sunday. Plus I have it sitting right where I see it every morning so I don't forget to take it to work. 2. I got a free app called Round. You set up the reminders and it's a bit of a nag if you don't tell it you took your pills! I'm sure there are others but I found this was easy to set up. hope this helps. Oh and also for calciums I prefer the bariatic advantage chews- chocolate. But I think everyone is different. Get a sampler pack before you buy a whole bag. You don't want to get a flavor you dread taking three times a day! I made that mistake with peanut butter and coconut. Finally I just gave them away at support group! Everyone else thought they were yummy! -
July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op

Kind of. Mine is technically labeled as a revision, but it’s because I had a nissen fundoplication (I surgery to prevent heartburn).
