    Straws?

I was going to say that you will get a myriad of responses on this. To be honest, I have used one quite often (7 1/2 months post-op). I did ask my NUT this question just yesterday and her response is that straws (as well as carbonation) should be avoided long term as the air it can introduce in to your pouch can eventually stretch the pouch. Now I had bypass not sleeve and the rules are often different. Additionally there are a lot of folks that say the pouch cannot be stretched. So, in summary, there isn't a clear answer. You can always avoid it to err on the safe side but don't panic if you have or need to use one.
  2. I am a band to sleeve revision I started out with my band at 218, when I got the sleeve I was 185. I am 4 months 3 weeks post op and I am 148 as of today. I'm 30 years old and my sick is...... Ok I guess. Sagging. Yes! Hoping that it catches up someday. Attached is my 4 month before and after which I was about 5 pounds heavier.
  3. Hi friends! well my Bariatric Bypass was Feb 10th, so here i am 9 days post-op, about to go back to work on Monday and I fear I might be eating (drinking) too much, taking in too many calories. I'm seeing people on here (I realize different programs and doctors and situations vary greatly) weeks post op eating 300 to 400 calories... wow!! So I'm taking in around 850 a day and getting in around 60 ounces of water and walking or riding a bike between 20 and 30 minutes EVERY day. Now I'm down around 13 lbs +/- in the last week or so, I'm pleased. Sometimes I think reading people describing their situations can lead to me questioning myself and my program; you know what they say, A little knowledge is a dangerous thing lol...!!!
  4. Never mind. Lol. I should have started at the top of the thread. I have Dr. Bessler and that lobby pic is all too familiar. I want the bypass as well. Congrats.
  5. You guys I’m sooo excited! For so so long I’ve been thinking of doing this, reading this board, watching Weightloss shows and YouTube videos and finally I’m here posting my surgery date. With my luck I’m probably only dreaming and I’ll wake up at 7 am which is what my alarm is set to [emoji30][emoji30][emoji30] this is so surreal. I was so afraid of having to wait weeks and weeks and having this big build up to surgery day. I start my liquid diet tomorrow and honestly I do not feel like I needed more time to stuff my face although I will go out to dinner later and have a juicy steak [emoji51] and a few drinks. I’m so excited and ready for this. I have to add that my surgeon did something I didn’t like- he tried putting doubt into my decision to go with a bypass and really challenged me as to why I want it and why I don’t want the sleeve. Doc because I don’t want the slightest possibility of GERD and because I would like to lose the most amount of weight in the shortest amount of time and have higher odds of keeping it off without requiring a DS. I feel that this is my one and only shot at getting a grip on my life and my health and I can’t afford (nor will insurance) to gradually go from procedure A to B if needed when I can cut the crap and get to business. I didn’t say that but I was thinking it. Okay enough rambling. Starting weight 295lbs Current weight 305lbs Goal weight 140lbs Yo-Yo Girl from New York City
  6. Good for you! This is your body, your choice to which surgery you wish to have. I’m behind you a week. My gastric bypass is on May 21st.

    Thinking of getting Lap Band

Hi! I'm Pamela. I have only had the band for 10 days so i can't help you on the long term part but i have had a great experience with the band so far. You are truly blessed to have a brother that is willing to pay for your surgery. I would not have been able to get the band if it wasn't for my insurance. Mine would cover the gastric bypass or the lap band. I researched them both and decided to go with the lap band. I wasn't comfortable with the mortality rate and the band is fully reversible if needed. Every person is different but i am so glad i chose the band. Good luck on making the right decision for you. Pamela lost 31 lbs to date

    Revisions? Anyone?

Revision To Mini Gastric Bypass I had my band for 2 years. 1 year of success and 1 year of adjustments, reflux, night coughing/reflux and pain. Finally I found the MGB. I am about 10 months out now and have lost about 75 pounds. I am about 100 pounds down from when I first had my band.

    Revisions? Anyone?

That's how they used to use the sleeve. If someone was too high risk to have the full bypass done due to size or medical conditions they would do a sleeve (safer than bypass, less OR time, fewer complications) and then when the person lost weight and were a safer surgical risk for bypass they would go back and do the rest of the bypass at a later time. They realized people got to goal with the sleeve alone so now that is what they do. Your nurse is incorrect about it not working for a long time, that was the old technique from 20-30 years ago. Today the technique is such that people do very well with it long term. Considering the five year stats just came out about a month ago, she needs to do her research before opening her mouth. ;o) Send her over here, we'll teach her about her profession! HA!

    Revisions? Anyone?

Sort of... kinda. ;o) My insurance would have covered a revision but I was too sick at the time to jump through ins hoops and I didn't care for any of the docs that my ins listed for revisions. So I decided to self pay in MX. I could get it done quickly and it was by the surgeon of my choice that I trusted. Point being, I had a BMI of 20-22? Somewhere around there? No comorbids at all, never did have any even with my original band. You have to have a history of MO with my ins. The standard of care in the US and MX is a history of MO for a revision being done all at once. Meaning one surgery to remove a band and revise to a new procedure. Less surgical risk, less anesthesia risk, etc. But it can't always be done in one surgery safely. If there is a great deal of pouch swelling, slip, erosion, etc., it may not be able to be done in a single procedure. Sometimes you have to have the band removed, heal, and then go back for a 2nd procedure. I decided to fight weight loss vs. weight regain by having two procedures. I could have had my band removed on an emergency basis and waited to jump through hoops for a revision. But I would have gained and I felt that was more potentially dangerous (and I didn't want to lose all that again) than fighting weight loss. If you do have the band removed and they won't revise now, you aren't that far away from a BMI of 40 so you may qualify soon. I know I wouldn't have kept it off without a revision. The sleeve is fantastic, I LOVE it! Soooooo much easier than the band. I am still amazed at how much I just got used to with banding and it became a way of life. Today I have WLS without the crap banding brings. Life is good with a sleeve.
  11. I have already told my boss that I'm going to have my hiatal hernia fixed. For me, though, it is a true statement because I have a hernia that is huge and is just about wrapping around my esophagus (ewww). I just will happen to be having the lapband placed at the same time. I don't know if you have a hernia or some other explanation for minor surgery (compared to gastric bypass, for example), but I sure wouldn't lie. I'm just not going to tell the whole story unless someone asks me directly. At that point, for me it would be lying if someone asked me directly if I had lapband and I said I hadn't. But since your surgery probably will interfere with your job to a degree, you could probably tell your boss and ask to keep it confidential. Isn't it a breach of some kind for an employer to share something that you want confidential, especially the nature of surgery? I don't know, just a possibility....
  12. I can completely understand why you want to keep it private because once you tell everyone there is this expectation of losing a ton of weight in a short time frame(because most people are ignorant in regards to gastric banding vs bypass). They don't realize that with the band you aren't going to lose weight as fast. Since I was banded back on Sept 11 all of my coworkers ask me all the time how much weight I have lost and I hate to keep telling them the same number because I have hit a plateau. It's embarassing when people think you should be losing but your not, but they also don't understand the banding process. I pretty much had to tell my coworkers because of all the doctors appts and everything leading up to getting approved by insurance...I wish I didn't though so I wouldn't have this high expectation hanging over my head everyday...

MY STORY-getting and losing my band

Sorry this all happened to you. A few things I do not understand, how could you go so long without ANY fluids and not die? You are quite lucky. Also, they sent you home septic? How did you survive that? There are several that have had severe infections. Might want to look up TJWood, he just had surgery last week for the 2nd time to remove pockets of pus from his abdomin. Steve is correct, there was another person here that said her doc told her she was rejecting the band because she was infected. That isn't rejection, that is infection. I feel for you, I lost my band too but for very different reasons. I self paid for the band and then self paid for a revision to a sleeve. That might be a better option for you once you are fully healed and back to the life of the living.

Is this going to work for me?

Hi I just wanted to let you know that not only did I stall until they found the right restriction, I was gaining weight. I thought really am I the only person in the world who has weight loss surgery and gains weight. Just try to remember that it is a process. A friend of mine had gastric bypass and she told me it took her three years to get all her weight off, so to be prepared for a long journey. I have to remind myself of that constantly because I still work out and I would like the weight to fall off. You know like to wake up and all my weight have been gone. But that is not happening to me,. As of now I am losing at a SLOW but steady pace. Just try to keep the faith and now that you will start to lose, it just might take awhile. Good Luck.
  15. I'll admit I feel like i've had a petty easy time so far. I've never had any food stuck. Had foamies a couple of times but I've seen various posts. Some say most everyone dumps and other's say just a certain percentage dump? So I want to do a survey....

    Leading up to my death?

@@1cutiejulie if you feel you need to say your goodbyes, do it. I knew someone, who knew someone who died post bypass (a couple of days out of surgery). IMO, being scared pre-WLS for most, is pretty normal. I was 52 and scared too, but once I got in the OR and the guy started talking to me (as they placed the mask over my face) I felt very calm. Next thing I knew I was in recovery. My point is that a lot of anxiety and fear of the unknown causes a lot of sleeplessness and worry. Wish you the very best and do what you feel you need to do pre-op, like getting your affairs in order, saying goodbye, etc. NO REGRETS!

    Alcohol

I was bypassed on dec 3, 2018 and had two glasses of wine about 8 weeks post op. Definitely had a buzz (I was a weekend drinker prior) and I am having a few glasses in the weekend. I have a very social life and am dating and I make sure to work out, drink plenty of water and stay on food plan. I’m not giving up my wine and I have tolerated it as well as everything else 100% just fine. Don’t even feel like I’ve had surgery.

    Alcohol

I am almost a full 7 years post op. Since we aren't supposed to have carbonated beverages with bypass I haven't...but I have had mixed drinks...it hits me super quick....I get really really buzzed....and move to water and sober up pretty quickly. I don't really care for Alcohol regardless but I tried it and it hits me quick personally Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app

My doctor is okay with wine/carbonation 7 weeks out (in moderation of course). He also doesn’t believe in addiction transfers! I’m bypass btw!

    March 23 buddies yet?

I had the bypass done on March 7th. I'm 5'4 and starting weight was 233, 221.4 on day of surgery. Today I weighed in at 184.6, so about 48 lbs lost in total. Really excited to hit 50 lost, and then I'll only have about 5 lbs to get to my previous low I had reached on my own about 5 years ago. I'm averaging about 1100 calories a day, and I track with LoseIt because I could see myself snacking around my restriction. I do "formal" exercise about 3x week, and I'm generally pretty busy around the house or going for walks. Energy level is pretty low though, I definitely don't feel like I'm bouncing around lol. Hope everyone else is well and healthy!

why is he doing this to me?? WHY??? what did i do?

I think all of our DH's react differently to us being banded but most have these reactions I think becauswe they are scared. Maybe because they do get comfortable with how and who we WERE. I dont think he is intentionally trying to sabatoge you, but I do think that he is a man who is worried about how the band might change you, and more than just phsyically. Luckily my hubbys is not forcing my favorite foods on me but at one point I felt like he was in a way competing with me. About four months post op he started going to the gym at 5am before work and then again after work. Sometimes he even went more than twice a day, it was rediculous! Once when a friend noticed his 20 lb loss he said "Well, someones got to keep up with Michelle". That remarked made me so mad and I didnt get why he was looking at it that way. My mom says he is worried that I will get skinny and leave him like my cousins wife did. (She had gastric bypass and then started cheating on him after losing over 100 lbs-although I cant just blame her, I mean they had to have some marital issues that were kept quiet in order for this to happen, right?) Lets face it. Unfortunately we live in a world where the majority of people do not look at us fat chicks as attractive or beautiful. As pretty as my hubby thought I was, I honestly believe that he didnt think he had to worry about looks from other men or me being hit on before being banded. He was comfortable. I have lost a lot of weight since my surgery in May and recently, it has been much more noticeable. I can already see that he is not used to me getting attention from others. Its made him very nervous and he started acting strange like with the gym thing and then calling me at work like 6 million times a day. I finally had to tell him that Yes, I did this for me but my surgery in a way was for us too-my family and he needed to relax before his actions seriously started causing us relationship problems. Since then thngs have been better. I guess just talk to him and tell him that you need him to be supportive now more than ever. And just because you cant or dont want to eat certain foods anymore doesnt mean that you expect him not to too. Oh, and tell him to pick up after the dogs too, lol! Good Luck!!
