    Liquid diet

    I had Celebrate Multivitamin with Iron chewables, Celebrate B12 and Calcium chewable until 6 weeks post op. I didn't take the calcium chewable because they just made me nauseous. Now I'm taking Celebrate Multivitamin with iron capsule (warning it's huge), Celebrate b12, Celebrate Calcium tablet (another not so small pill and I take 3-2x a day separate from my multi) and Bariatric Fusion B-50 complex. I haven't had any nausea but I have to be careful with my night dose of Calcium because it's also with my meds and I've learned it needs to be at least 2-3 hours since dinner or I'll be uncomfortable for a 30 minute to an hour because it's a lot. I'm off most of my medical meds but I have mental meds, Progesterone, colace and the Calcium and that takes like 4-5 swallows with a couple pills at a time. I think I'm doing well on them though. I've had better energy and not as tired as pre-surgery.

    Denied by insurance

    Following this thread. I wonder if the different states have slightly different requirements regardless of federal plan, because subbed out to the different areas. So far I see in WA it’s with either Primera or regence and their requirements differ slightly even amongst them here and what I was provided via FEP was the same as the local requirements. I read up on a few other states and there are additional differences. Have my first visit next week so hoping to clear up some additional questions. I had doc appointments but wasn’t weighed there and guessed my weight at the time (facepalm) this was before I knew/wanted the surgery. Also I think my height has changed and I’ve been using what I thought I was forever and that would also alter BMI. Hoping I don’t have to wait even longer….
  3. Oh wow that’s incredible! So you lost the 112 pounds after the bypass? 3 stone would actually be perfect for me to lose even if that was the maximum amount, so even that is great news. Did you find the recovery was easier or harder than the sleeve?

    Days off work after surgery

    I booked 2 weeks off (holiday leave) and with hindsight I needed every second of that. Even when I returned to work I wasn't at my best for a couple of weeks afterwards. There's terrible pressure to get back into the office. If I had had a cancer diagnosis and got 2/3 of my stomach removed to treat it I can't help feeling I would have 'allowed' myself longer to recover. The procedure is similar, despite this having being my choice.
  5. Hi @schla73. I'm not an expert, but I haven't heard of a Gasteric Sleeve Bypass. Is that like the Duodenal Switch (DS)? Many have had to lose weight prior to surgery. In my case, it was my insurance company that required me to have 3 visits to the surgeon, each at least 1 month apart, and I had to show them I was taking this seriously by losing weight before each appointment. Then there's the pre-op diets that many have to do which shrinks the liver and makes the surgery easier for the surgeon. I lost 28 pounds in the 3 1/2 months prior to surgery.

    New Member/Revisions

    Anyone here got the revision from sleeve to bypass with a lower BMI? Long story short, I got a revision from band to sleeve on 2016, reached my goal weight, and started to have lots of reflux and life and my current BMI is now 31. I started the process to get a revision, and the EDG only showed a 4cm hietal hernia but nothing related to esophagitis. I have to go back to the doctor next week, but I’m fearful my insurance will deny me because they would need more proof of my GERD. I read the guidelines for Aetna, and it says esophagitis 😭

    September surgery buddies!!

    Maybe! Around 5 years ago my liver numbers started to look troubling but I got it under control. No one has said anything, and I'm not getting blood work specifically from my surgery center for another two weeks, but I think back when I started the process my primary ordered labwork and probably shared it with the surgeons office. So yeah maybe that's it.
  8. I need to quick smoking as well. My surgery date is 9/28. My surgeon said I needed to be nicotine free 3 weeks before pre surgical testing. My testing is on 8/31, so I need to quit on 8/10. Lots of people will have tips... get suckers or jolly ranchers, write in a journal, knit, anything that keeps you busy and your hands moving. Honestly though, in the past when I quit for significant periods of time I just quit cold turkey. It only sucks bad the first few days to a week. After that, it is all habit and not physical. Hopefully it's easier for you than you think. It's soooo worth it as well.
  9. I was sleeved a week ago yesterday, and my steristrips are starting to fall off. Most of them look like normal incisions and are healing nicely. This one is my drainage incision and has a weird indention and looks like an open wound. It doesn’t hurt and isn’t leaking anything, so maybe it’s just stitched down under the skin, but seeing a gaping hole is very nerve racking. Is this something I should go in for, or is this type of incision normal for the drainage incision? Thank you!

    VSG and constipation

    Miralax has become a daily part (one packet a day in my first Yeti rambler bottle of fluids) of my routine. Especially after talking to my surgeon and him telling me that it is one of the one best options in terms of avoiding constipation that is also incredibly safe and effective while not being addictive like Colace and Milk of Magnesium. It's a life saver after the bought I had a couple of weeks ago. I also stopped taking my calcium supplements for now and have had no problems since. Just need to figure out how to get enough calcium now since I believe those contributed to the painful experience I had.

    3 months post VSG and NOTHING

    I feel your frustration! I’ve only lost about 60 lbs in the past year and a half since my VSG. My dietitian isnt very helpful in my trying to get my grams of protein other than adding protein shakes which definitely slows down my weight loss! I’ve resorted to eating (and tracking!) an all protein diet (eggs, fish, chicken, etc..) and adding in small amounts of green veggies. To get to my protein goals I have to add a protein powder like unflavored GenePro to my food and drinks. I only weigh myself a few days a week. Now I’ve developed terrible acid reflux and a hiatal hernia so I’m going to be revised to a RNY. I’m hoping it will fix a multitude of issues!!! Hang in there!     July 2022 peeps!

    I've been hungry too! But, at least not like before surgery. I'm down about 28# and have slowed considerably (I'm at 3.5 weeks post op). My only discomfort is my healing hiatal hernia repair. I constantly feel like something's stuck in my throat, and at times I'll get a big pain (albeit briefly) if something doesn't want to go down. I've had to occasionally sip water to help get it down.     I start on sept 5th I have 1 week where I can have 1 small keto like meal and the rest of the day only liquids. Then the second week is only liquids.

    Finally made it to this point

    Now we're in the territory where my surgical experience is meaningful. It seems like time for a colorful expletive. I had an open surgery, so they cut from just below my sternum to just above my pubic area. It took 30 some odd staples to seal me up. I also had a drain. Any movement was very painful. Any tug on the drain made the staple pain desirable. My #1 advice: Don't move. Do you really need to breath? When you simply have to move there are two schools of thought: 1) Move fast; 2) Move slow. Moving fast scrunches all that movement, and all that pain, to one short but intense burst of pain. But then it's done. Moving slow allows you to evade some pain, but the pain you have happens over a longer period of time but can seem to be at a lower intensity. I say mix it up. Keep the pain guessing. Here is the crappy part: Those precious oxycodone won't help the acute pain from moving around. You could be barely conscious but move slightly and the pain shoots right through. Save the pills for when you are achy, oxy does a great job for persistent pain. If you have a recliner go there and live for a while. Getting up and down is much easier when you are starting from a sitting position. If you don't have a recliner, build one on your bed with pillows. Duct Tape. Put duct tape over the staples so they aren't being pulled. You might want to put something non-sticky over the staples, With no skin pulling on the staples, you will have dramatically less pain when you move. Some folks may think surgical / medical tape would be the way to go, after all it's what the Docs use. Notice they didn't use any of those tapes... because they don't work. And sending you home in duct tape would have had people laughing. Trust me: Duct Tape. Things will improve dramatically when you get the staples plucked out. Those first minutes after those staples are gone are heaven. Getting them plucked out is a different story. 2 out of 3 staples say good-bye peacefully and quietly, and just as you relax thinking it's smooth sailing from here, that 3rd staple strikes. Yikes! But then the next 2 convince you that it's back to smooth sailing, when suddenly you're climbing down from the ceiling. But think about just 2-3 minutes from now when all the pain will be gone. This may be a good time for a pill. In no time you will be whining about the stall you started just about the time your staples came out. Good luck, Tek

    3 Month Stall?

    I hit my first stall at the three month mark and stalled for 3 weeks. After that I was a chronic staller and had to fight for every pound. Stalls are fairly normal. They happen. Having as many stalls as I had is not normal so you'll likely be fine and not stall as much as I did. But yeah, it's just your body readjusting itself. It'll likely happen a few more times in your journey. I'd say to try not to stress about it, but from experience all I did was stress so...

    3 Month Stall?

    It seems that weight loss stalls are common; though I've been very fortunate to not have one (so far, at least) At the risk of offending you with another pertinent question: are you tracking calories as well as protein? I've lost over 70lb in 4 months - and I attribute that to minimum of 80g protein and minimum 1000 calories each day.

    Do I have to eat ?

    Im only 3 months out but I cant say whether or not my hunger is back. I guess I can say its not back full force yet. I have gone through periods where I thought I was over the top hungry only to find out I wasnt and I get full quick. Ive also gone through a phase where I wanted to eat whatever I could get ahold of or I wanted to snack for no real good reason. Currently I am in a phase right now where Im not bothered if I eat at all. So its a real struggle and I can relate to you when you say you dont want to eat sometimes because your full from the meal you ate earlier. It seems odd sometimes tho lol

    Welcome Steve. This is a very informational forum and lots of nice ppl here willing to help. As far as the pre op diet yep that can be a rough one but after the 4th day for me I was doing good, not as crabby less hungry and I didnt have a problem getting through the next week and then it was surgery time. Set your eyes on the prize and you will do just fine

    Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

    Same here. I am 3 months post op and what I have found is after I eat my protein first I really cant get much more in such as potatoes, rice, bread or pasta. If I am craving potatoes I will have about a tablespoon full and its hit or miss if I am able to eat it or not. I tend to just stay away from it because its not worth eating too much and having adverse effects from it. I tend to pick my battles with mash lol

    Post op sleeping

    Ditto to what catwoman7 said. I bought a recliner in case I couldnt sleep in bed. I was in the recliner approximately 2 days and slept horribly. I decided I would try my bed and I did much better. I moved a bit gingerly within that first week but I experienced no issues after 1 week and slept like a baby literally lol

    Sleep Apnea after surgery

    I never had a sleep study done but I can say before surgery I was up 2-3 times a night constantly waking up and having to go to the bathroom. Since surgery 3 months ago I have been sleeping the whole night, in fact I noticed a few weeks after surgery I wasnt waking up for whatever reasons anymore. Happy to say for me I am sleeping better after the weight loss I have. I hope you will notice a big difference as well

    Eggs

    I was able to tolerate eggs pretty good. I just wasnt bothered to eat them that soon. I am just now 3 months post op and eat them more than I did starting out after surgery.

    Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake

    Im 3 months post op currently and I was more or less doing what your doing. I wasnt getting enough calories intake and I became weakish. I increased my protein and fluids which I initially found hard to do but things are leveling off for me. I was told today to not eat more than a cup of food. Currently I can only get somewhere between 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup so I still have a way to go lol.
