OMG! I wish my doctor sent me home with dilaudid!!!! I took liquid Lortab and it helped...a little. I swear the pill form is more potent. My doctor wouldn't refill the Lortab for me, and gave me a joke of a pill called Ultracet. It was like taking candy...did nothing for me. I do have a suggestion for gas pain that really works. I did this after my c-section and the band and I was very surprised. Drink only lukewarm liquids. Don't chew ice or drink cold Water. I swear it worked for me!! I don't know why, but it did. I had mimimal gas with both surgeries and it certainly wasn't painful. To Leisalips in CA...I was terrified to go in for my fill. I begged them to numb the area but they said there was no need for it. The nurse said that I needed to find something else to worry about. So, I laid there on the table, was breathing heavy, and...felt nothing! I didn't even feel the needle go thru my skin! It hurts much worse to have a shot in the hip, or an IV, because the port is under the skin and the needle doesn't have to pass thru and muscle. As far as band slippage, I have only heard of that happening to a couple of people, and it seems to be the early bandsters, or people that didn't follow the appropriate diet and vomited a lot. I personally know several people that have had the band and none of them have had severe problems. On the other hand, I know three people that had the RNY bypass, and two of the three have had serious complications and continue to have them. It seems as the long-term research is coming out, the band seems to be the better and safer option. Personally, I highly recommend it! Some people may disagree with me though. Don't be scared. Research the options for yourself. I did over two years of research before I finally committed to the band.

at the age of 19, (which was 22 years ago), I was 328 lbs, and I got the gastric bypass surgey. I was successful at loosing 80 lbs, but then started putting back on weight and I've been stuck at 275 for years and years. I continue to have issues with reflux and it's not consistent. I'm wondering if this new surgery is a different venue for me that might work better. I'm really considering my options as I've never been at an ideal weight. diets after diets just haven't worked. anyone have advice as I ponder this decision?
-
Well, I'm 98% sure I am getting the surgery. The only 2% is if the doctor gives me a reason why I shouldn't. I have a kidney that is in the wrong spot, I don't see why this would matter, but I never know what it's going to affect. I want to get it ASAP. I have an appt. with my back/pain doctor tomorrow to schedule more injections, and if I can get this Lap-Band quickly, I want to possibly hold off on getting more injections to see how quickly I could lose weight and stop the pain in my hips and back. I'm glad I found this community, as I don't know anyone who has had banding (just gastric bypass) and I think this will be a great resource when I have questions or tough moments as I go along :girl_hug:

To do surgery or not to do?
Djmohr replied to beccaconaty87's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@beccaconaty87 Hi there and welcome! I just wanted to reach out and welcome you to this site. Honestly I don't know what I would have done without my Bariatric Pal family. They have helped me so many times when I had had questions or simply wanted to rant a little bit. There is one regret I have had regarding weight loss surgery and that is I wish I would have been brave enough to do this in my twenties. I was scared for all the reasons you listed. Instead I kept moving forward with yo yo dieting and adding more weight along the way. In the process I developed high blood pressure high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, Gerd, sleep apnea, stage 3 kidney disease. I have severe arthritis of my spine and have had now 5 surgeries to deal with that. My knees are bad, my hips are bad and I suffered from severe migraines. All of this was a direct result of being obese. I carried an extra 150lbs around for 25 years. I truly believe that having this surgery gave me my life back. I am down 111 lbs in just 9 months. all of my comorbitities have resolved but the damage to my spine is done and cannot be undone. If you do this for yourself, be brave and do your research. It really will give you that time back with your kids as well. Please feel free to reach out with questions. I suspect like others you will likely to told to go the bypass route because it will cure your Gerd where the other surgeries may make that worse. You only want to go through this type of surgery once. -
To do surgery or not to do?
dhrguru replied to beccaconaty87's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
What helped me with my decision to have the surgery was involving my kids (ages 11 & 12) and making them aware of what would change for me, confirm *nothing* would change for them etc. They are the BEST supporters and made the decision so much easier. (My hubby is great too, but the kids inquire more, just naturally curious.) You'd have to gauge how open you could be with your kids, but it was a great motivator for me. You already know the the end effect of what will happen if you decide not to (or IS happening), you feel badly about yourself, what you eat, how people view you, how YOU view you. So it more of the same. Are you willing to accept that? I too was concerned coming out of surgery 'sicker' than I was going in-- for that I had to trust truths I know about my body... I heal well/fast, manage pain well, I never have complications, and have have a "stomach of steel" that rarely give me troubles. You know you best! Finally-- I vote bypass, but then I'm biased :-) -

Too much weight loss? Is that really possible?
loveoften replied to mae7365's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Before I had my sleeve in late July of 2012 I was 199 lbs. By March of 2013, I was below 130 and I looked sickly. Kinda like a lollipop... my head seemed too big for my body. I do have pics - just ask. I hope you are healthy above all. I was happy when I regained and maintained in the 140-150 lb. range. Now I am doing a revision VSG to RNY and at a much higher re-gain weight (for many reasons). Be well. -
My original surgery was MGB, but welcome to the team! We're few, but we're good! How long did they make your bypass, do you know?

I’m post op bypass day 5. I was in hospital one night. I slept 12 hours from surgery time. I have never been that far under for that long. I never used my iPad at all. Bring athletic slides to wear home. I used my chapstick and fresh underwear. No bra as one of the incisions is at a bad spot. I brought ear plugs but I’m Used to them. I had all kinds of things prepared and needed none of it. I came home next day and am a stomach sleeper. That was a bust but was able to gingerly put a pillow under me on third night. I have slept in bed since.

First Post! Kinda hesitant...
jane13 replied to drumking88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my son had a friend in high school who had the surgery when he was around 14. not sure but I believe it was either band or bypass. he was really heavy. I felt bad for him. -
This was not the old "RNY is superior to VSG" debate. To clarify I have a VSG is a fine tool This was a question about the need/desire for revisions based on failed expectation on weight loss alone (not post WLS medical issues or malfunctions) I see a ton of post (sadly mostly VSG based) where people are very freshly out of surgery wondering when they can cheat, or 2 years out of surgery wondering why they never made it to goal , or going for revisions to RNY to finally make to goal after regain My questions was are people going for VSG to avoid dumping to cheat (vs malabsorption for medical valid reasons) OR were they not advised that the best surgeries for their particular cases would have been the more aggressive surgery OR did they have no honest clue about the statistical weightloss/ regain rates ? I see a lot of good complex answers, thank you. I also see that a lot of Doctors are promoting VSG as their first choice surgery. Now I know. There are complex reasons why revisions are seemingly on the rise. Thanks everyone!!!!

I wish there was a way to know what is best for each individual. My choice on the sleeve was because of iron deficiency, vitamin D deficiency and heavy cycles. I was worried the bypass would make these things much worse and cause other problems for me. I would have loved to do the bypass because it comes with more weight lost. My surgeon and I both agreed on the sleeve. However I’m not sure 🤔 it was the right choice. I started out at 280 lost 37 before surgery and would like to be 170. I’m currently 8 days out and worried because I havent lost a pound. Spoke with my doctor yesterday who says I may not be getting in enough liquids and calories to lose anything. So I am praying that I made right decision. I don’t want to be one of those people that needs a revision.

I don't think it is self sabotage for most people. I think it is fear. It is a scary thing. I am pre-op. During the seminar the surgeon gave us the info and stats for the various surgeries. He seemed to not think much of the band and suggested the switch for those with a BMI of 50+. During my consult he asked which surgery I was interested in, and I said I was leaning toward the sleeve but still undecided. He talked about the upside of dumping as a tool, but also told me about malabsorption and post op pain. I told him that I liked the idea of the sleeve being shorter surgery time, and he said that really isn't a big factor because a bypass doesn't take that much longer. He said based on my history I would be a good candidate for the sleeve but that a bypass would be ok for me too. He left it up to me and didn't really push me in either direction.

Hi - I'm wondering if the use of essential oils is okay after bypass surgery? I love lemon oil in my water and hope that I can continue using it and others. Anyone have experience with this and whether or not your docs have been okay with it? I use them a lot, for sore throats, upset stomach, etc. Mostly topically but I safely use some of them internally. (I use DoTerra). Any thoughts, ideas, articles, etc would be appreciated. Thanks!

Leak Test Nastiness- Will This Help?
futureskinnypants replied to futureskinnypants's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Glad to hear some of you thought it wasn't that bad lol, my mom had gastric bypass a couple years ago and said she threw up after. she said it tasted like gasoline. I'll just pretend its a margarita I'm using dr. morris washington in south carolina. It's $8000 all inclusive. I got financing for $7000 of it and i have to pay for travel. its a 12 day stay but god knows i need the vacation lol!!! check my other posts for more info. -
I had my lap band put in in Nov of 08, two weeks later i had my tonsils removed and was in ALOT of pain. Needless to say i lost some weight approx 15lbs, once I was able to eat I noticed I had NO restrictions I advised my dr of this and he said just wait and it will happen. Fast forward to Feb 09 I have my first fill and I have NO restriction and that was with a 6cc fill(the capacity on this sucker is 9:crying:) I lost all faith in the lap band and had just decided it did not work for me. I became depressed and gained approx 40 lbs:mad:, Just this past November I decided to just suck it up and try something else. I set the timer on my cell phone and at small meals every three hours and hit the gym 4 days a week 30 mins hard cardio and 20 mins weights. I see results now I have lost just over 20lbs:thumbup: but i am hungry and I'm not ashamed to admit a little cranky. I just went to the Dr again to day and I am scheduled to have the remaining 2.5 cc fill hoping that it will help, I asked what my options are if this does not work. My Dr advised I can stay on the same path with the gym work and the lower calorie meals or do the bypass procedure. I am sooooo leaning towards the bypass because I am sooooo tired of being hungry, fat, and cranky. It is a drastic move and I am concerned with the permanent factor but right now hungry fat and cranky seems kinda permanent also as i have been two of the three for a while now. Any thoughts?

I would wait and see if restriction happens with the fill. If that doesn't work. I personally won't go as far as to have the bypass. I don't know how I would feel about it though if I was larger. If I was having alot of health issues I would consider it. Right now I have PCOS and am getting close to diabetes. There is so much to consider. How are your knees feeling? your back? If all these things are bothering you and you are hungry it is no wonder you are cranky. Sounds like your doing the best you can without the restriction. Could you just imagine how great it would be with the restriction? I hope you get it it this time so you don't have to worry about the bypass.

Anticipating A Denial
irishmama2004 replied to BoBann's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck to all of you. I hate this for each of you. Wish we lived in a world where doctors in accordance with their patients made medical decisions, not insurance companies trying to gamble the monetary odds of our lives. My paperwork got its final document on Friday. Should get sent off first thing Monday morning. I woke up in a panic last night that the nurse put it in for the bypass code instead if sleeve so I will call at 8 am just to verify the right code is used. -

Andrea, I understand you may have to travel, but I'd consider finding another surgeon. If your surgeon needs proctor, it MIGHT be that he hasn't placed the new AP band and he needs a proctor to go over placement with him (it's a little different), but it most likely is because he isn't certified by Allergan/Inamed yet, period. And that's okay, he's not necessarily incompetent, he's may just be brand new to banding. He may have done tons of various laparascopic procedures and maybe has done hundreds of bypasses, but he likely hasn't done many bands. But that's a consideration. Given the history of his pushing and pushing you to have bypass done, I'm leaning toward him not having done many bands. Do you want to be someone's first or second band ever? I *might* if I was comfortable and confident with the surgeon when I interviewed him. Based on what you've told us of your conversations with him, I would NOT be comfortable with his confidence in his own abilities or his own willingness to learn and try the latest advancements. Seriously, GO FIND ANOTHER SURGEON. I know you have kids, many of us do. I understand you may work, many of us do, I know it must be hard to arrange, but Andrea, this is your body and your new life you are dealing with here. Find a day or two that you can set aside to travel to an appt. Really think about this, please. From what I understand being Allergan/Inamed (Allergan is the newer name) certified to place the band is not state by state. It's one time. You can call Allergan and ask them if your surgeon is certified. The website is lapband.com and you should be able to find a link to look him up. What is his name, BTW? You can look him up on obesityhelp.com and on tha American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (asbs.org) to see if he's a member. Please do these things, or PM me the name or post it here and we'll see what we can find out about him to see how much experience he has. -
