Large hiatal hernia discovered during gastric bypass surgery
Panda333 replied to Vikingfanaz10's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I don't know why you would consult an attorney or another surgeion unless you think malpractice was done. I think your surgeon did the correct course to fix your henia, then wait to do your revision...... I'm sure you signed your life away before the surgery as well....... -

October 2019 surgery peeps?

Hi Cherylmilla, I had my gastric bypass surgery on 10/2/19 with hiatal hernia repair & gallbladder Removal. It’s nice to meet you! Horrible gas pains (even in my chest and shoulders), per Hospital, and soreness where gallbladder used to be & hernia site. I’ve been taking Tylenol - with codeine for pain and walking around my house a lot. I froze a lot of my protein water (20 gms) at 4 oz a pkg but was only able to get 2 down when I came home from hospital yesterday. I woke up early today to start sipping my 1 oz of water - which has been hard when I fill my new stomach up. Regarding the horrible gas, I saw a post where their doctor approved otc Gasx. Hoping it will be a viable option for me. -
Large hiatal hernia discovered during gastric bypass surgery

I haven’t heard of surgery being delayed for that. I know that it is fairly common for hernias to be repaired at the same time as WLS. Mine was done during my band to bypass -
Had sleeve 9/2016 was doing great till 6-8 months ago started regaining weight (30+) yes I have been eating more but nothing drastic and still exercise 1 hour a day. So frustrating! Saw my surgeon says I qualify for RNY I’m considering it but he told me that I won’t loose that much more. Can you tell me what the average would be and how successful people have or have not been with a revision. Having a UGI later this month to rule out reflux (not sure if I have that) thank you!

October Surgery Roll Call
Lizzziee replied to Panda333's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just returned from having a mini gastric bypass on October 1 and I have to agree with @ypease, Dr. Ilan and the whole staff at Hospital BC are amazing! I have never had such attentive nurses at any other hospital, the level of care was outstanding. I had some nausea after surgery but once that passed I could not believe how fast I was up walking around and feeling great. Also, If you do go, take the tour. I was not planning to go but I’m glad I did because I had such a good time. -
Large hiatal hernia discovered during gastric bypass surgery
Vikingfanaz10 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I went in for gastric bypass surgery last Tuesday... actually a sleeve to bypass revision (had sleeve in 2010). Long story short, once the surgeon had me opened up a very large hiatal hernia was discovered. She determined gastric bypass could not be performed safely at this point due to the extensive repair of my hiatal hernia. She wants me to heal from the HH REPAIR surgery for 90 days, then do the sleeve to bypass revision. Needless to say I'm pretty bummed out GP surgery wasnt done, but also glad the HH was fixed. Has anyone else experienced this? Alot of mixed emotions, whether I should consult a different surgeon, or talk to an attorney. -
That's fine I've also dealt with my weight since teen years..same yoyo dieting.. I started at 135lbs to lose I'm down to 90lbs to go just on my own preop diet... Surgery very soon RNY bypass

October Surgery Roll Call
Linda13108 replied to Panda333's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my gastric bypass today. I’m feeling great and have been walking to help with the gas pain but otherwise pain has been very manageable. I’m ahead of where my doc wanted me to be so they are considering letting me go home tomorrow instead of Monday like they had planned. 😊😊😊 -
My bypass is 130 (cm ?) in length (but I'm a conversion from VSG)
-
Just to clarify my surgeon said he does 120cm bypass others do 100cm it all depends on the surgeon

I keep thinking about this topic and where to discuss it even though it’s not directly related to bariatric surgery at the same time it is in a way connected. I always waffle between trying to think about something and just not being able to think about it until it happens, I guess I’m just a cat ... you know how for cats it’s whatever is in that moment is everything and they don’t really perceive tomorrow. I don’t think I am even worried about it, I won’t know until the day arrives how I will feel. But I do need to at least confront the issue. Right? I guess a brief backstory is in 2010 (age 35) I had a hysterectomy, they took everything except my ovaries. I had fast growing fibroids everywhere including cervix. My uterus was retroflexed (is that the word?) toward my spine and I had a large pedunculated fibroid connected there pressing against my colon and spine area. Also a lot of fibroids, nodules and cysts in the walls of my uterus and cervix. They also removed a fibroid from my left ovary. A few years before this whole situation, a doctor told me I likely had endometriosis, bowel bladder etc. but the only way to diagnose was medical menopause but I refused and that was that. I also have Pcos. My doctor at the time said the only way to not repeatedly have the painful cysts was to have my ovaries removed but she didn’t want to do it so soon. Fast forward to last year I saw a uro/gyn due to issues related to my hysterectomy. I had a mass on my left ovary as well. I had pelvic floor repair procedures and he removed my left ovary since it was covered in endometriosis. But left my right ovary even though there was also endometriosis. He said he didn’t want to put me in menopause. i know menopause doesn’t cure endometriosis. But after my gastric bypass surgery and gallbladder surgery and I ended up in the ER with pneumonia and other problems. They incidentally found a mass on or near my right ovary. I have a lot of pain in that area. Some time later I had a MRI that showed hemorrhagic cysts. I saw my Uro/gyn and we decided it’s time to just do a oophorectomy and remove my last ovary and also check for any visible endometriosis. The problem with endometriosis is that it can be in places they won’t be able to find it. Even lungs and brain. I am hoping he will also revise one of the other procedures giving me trouble. this is hard since this is a very personal issue. But I will be facing menopause now. I’ve had hot flashes and night sweats for years likely due to my body’s inability to regulate temperature. And I know about natural supplements for menopause. But what worries me is it’s impact on my weight loss journey. Especially since hormone replacement therapy doesn’t seem like a good idea since that triggers the endometriosis. I haven’t quite thought about it, except my metabolism is already basically nonexistent. I already have weird body issues both due to how the hysterectomy changed my body shape along with degenerative scoliosis, and body dysmorphia. I know it’s a long message for a simple question that probably doesn’t really have an answer since each persons menopause experience can vary greatly. Im already in a longer than usual stall and my weight backslid after I had a colonoscopy/endoscopy. It just won’t budge. The only thing different is my dr gave me prescription famotidine since the omeprozole contradicts a medication I’m on. And I’m thinking it’s that. I added extra vitamin c since there’s some possibility it can help with constipation. But I’m switching back to a natural heartburn remedy for now too.

Absorption of Antidepressants?
mcfluffington replied to PepperCat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found my med mix in 2010. Had surgery 2012. Lowest weight was 200 lbs. Had weight gain due to loss of control over my environment. I had to move in with my mother to take care of her after an accident and she had goodies. Needless to say I gained due to being unable to ignore food that ws sitting right by my bed. I was staying in her combo livingroom, kitchen, diningroom. Moved out and the weight gain stopped. A year later I got a grip on losing at least a lb a month. Now I am considering revision. bupropion is great. I find it not only combats depression but deals with compulsive behavior I.e. compulsive overeating. -
Absorption of Antidepressants?
mcfluffington replied to PepperCat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have severe clinical depression and had a gastric bypass. You can no longer take extended release meds after gastric bypass. I take bupropion and Zoloft twice a day. I found a good mix of meds long before surgery and have been pretty consistent though I am sure I have raised the levels at times. Definitely discuss this with your surgeon and psychiatrist. I hope this helps. I know how scary med changes can be. -
ANY DOCTORS TO explain medical terms like common channel length in bypass??
RickM replied to New&Improved's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I found this abstract that explains some of this: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4743521/ What I read from it and other references that I found with a cursory search is that it doesn't seem to make a big difference what the limb lengths are (within normal standards.) I suspect that your doc is talking of the biliopancreatic limb (which is the one between the remnant stomach and the anastomosis with the roux limb from the pouch., though he could also be referring to the roux limb, as both are part of the "bypass". The main thing that I have seen as a negative to shorter limbs is increased chances of bile reflux, as the distance between the bile ducts (emptying into the duodenum, below the remnant stomach) and the bottom of the pouch. But this seems to be in cases where the limbs are kept very short (as in under 60cm or so) to minimize weight loss in non-WLS surgery patients (such as for cancer or gastroparesis, so it is unlikely to be an issue with what your doc is talking about doing. "Common channel" is not a term usually associated with the RNY, though it would refer to everything below the roux and bilio limbs, and would be however long your small intestine is (quite variable from person to person) minus the roux and bilio limbs. In the more heavily malabsorptive procedures such as the Duodenal Switch or the Distal RNY, that lower intestinal length - common channel - is the key figure and is usually in the 100-200 cm range, with the upper limbs being much longer and determined by initial overall intestinal length. -
Thanks for the reply Mikeyy. Yeah I’m just a medical nerd and I found it interesting that he bypassed so much of the jejunum.

ANY DOCTORS TO explain medical terms like common channel length in bypass??
New&Improved replied to New&Improved's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oh yeah I'm SA. I've been overweight since like teenage but getting older and some random on bus told me about the surgery and insurance so I did the same got the cover waited 12 months out. Saw the surgeon roughly 3 months prior to the 12 months and my surgery is in just over 3 weeks but I felt like trying my own diet early. Went from 146 to 126 in 5.5 weeks very strict diet almost no carbs. No sugar.no fat. High protein. No junk at all.. Surgeon was very happy and said it will make surgery much easier for him and my recovery should be better with lower BMI.. this my first ever WLS & I've been reading this forum for over a year 1000s of posts Feeling confident but a little scary to think how little volume you can take in the first few months like you said 80ml? And drinking like a litre a day vs so much I drink atm... But I really feel this bypass Will give me the greatest chance of long term success!!!! -
ANY DOCTORS TO explain medical terms like common channel length in bypass??
ANewStart4Me replied to New&Improved's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That is how much of the small intestines they bypass. 100-150cm is what my doctor said he normally aims for. 200cm seems extreme. Shorter length Without being a doctor and only watching them on tv haha, I assume you absorb more from what you eat etc. going longer you risk malabsorption but I would also guess you might dump easier. My doctor did 100cm on me, first couple of weeks even this length dumping was crazy on liquid drinks like protein drinks, ensure drinks, up and go’s. Last 4 weeks has been really good until I drank an up n go too fast and instantly dumped it. I go Tuesday to check my vitamins to make sure I am absorbing enough. Here a link from one of the melbourne clinics that explain touch on length a tiny bit. http://www.melbournebariatrics.com.au/laparoscopic-gastric-bypass.html -
Absorption of Antidepressants?
Briswife15 replied to PepperCat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've posted about this in the past, so you may want to do a search, but the answer is, yes, you may indeed have problems absorbing antidepressants. I did. At first we switched from extended release Effexor to immediate release and it wirked for a few months. Suddenly I started experiencing withdrawal symptoms and realized I was not absorbing the Effexor. Switched to liquid Prozac and it seems to be absorbing well. I had bypass. ANY DOCTORS TO explain medical terms like common channel length in bypass??
New&Improved posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hey there after speaking with my surgeon I'm confused and I'm not a medical person at all my speciality is computers.... I think the doctor said he was doing a bypass of 120cm and I think he was referring to the common channel length? He said it's generally between 100-200cm? Does anyone know what it means having a shorter length or longer length? I think he said the shorter length still provides good weight loss but not the extreme Malabsorption of vitamins; still need vitamins of course but not like major deficiency issues. I don't quite understand the differences. Thanks again. (3.5 weeks till surgery) -
I’m Sleeve to Bypass Revision. Anyone have severe anxiety disorder? I had a panic attack after my last surgery and it was a struggle to get my anxiety meds administered to me.... fast forward to now I have a fear of being hooked up to an IV and I’m worried about not being able to ask for my anxiety meds. Thx.

I’m pre revision surgery to bypass. I have a question about post op. I’m kind of freaking out because I had some problems in the hospital with my sleeve getting my anti depressant meds. There was no extended release but finally they just let me open the capsule and take it. I’m wondering with bypass if I’m going to have more extreme and long term challenges because of absorption?!
