I'm a fan of the ones that have both footpads and handles that you hold. I don't have any data to suggest that they are any better, but it just seems like having more sensors in more places would be a good thing. The one I have now in an Omron, but I recently saw on Amazon that InBody also makes one for the home market. InBody is the brand my Bariatric Center uses, so I'm tempted to get one of those as well. One thing to keep in mind: none of these home BIA scales are all that accurate. In reality, that's not super important to me. What's more important is that they are consistent; meaning I can actually track from one week to the next if my percentage of body fat is trending in the right direction. When I want a more accurate number, I'll go get a bod pod scan. .

Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?
sparkly_keeks replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had a bypass earlier this year and so far zero regrets. My weight loss, even with bypass, has been slower than average due to a screwed-up metabolism from years and years of dieting. I know if I had gotten a sleeve I may have had slower weight loss and more stalls, so I am happy with my choice to get the bypass. Since the surgery, I have a really strong sensation of restriction, next to no hunger, food aversions (sweet and fried foods) and I can taste things way more intensely. I can eat very small portions of junk foods like ice cream (1 or 2 tablespoons). Anything more than that and I just feel icky so I just avoid them. I lost my sugar cravings, which was the cause of my weight gain in the past. I hope those sugar cravings are gone for good because not having them will help a lot with maintenance. The only struggle so far, however, is dehydration. I have to be so focused every day on meeting my water goals. If I don't, I wake up in the middle of the night with the most awful dry mouth. Other than that, all is good. -
This seems too easy...

Same story here! VSG June 14 with Bhatti GI & North Memorial in MN. Recovery has really been a breeze. I took 1 week off from my desk job for surgery recovery. At almost 8 weeks, 32.5 lbs down. Including a recent 10-day vacation, eating normal foods at restaurants, but small amounts. On vacation we walked 3-6 miles a day. Normally I barely exercise…yeah…I know I need to do better, but I do physical farm work too. No food intolerances, nausea, pain, hair loss, or dumping. I get my 65-90g protein, hydrate, and have my vitamins & probiotic. 900-1200 calories/day. Too often my carbs are too high (>75g). It’s hard to get fiber. The “hardest” part for me and the only deviation from the plan that I have committed (besides erratic levels of exercise) was clear liquids. I was prescribed 3 days CL before surgery (lost 4lbs) plus 2 weeks CL after surgery. 2w after was way too long. I got dizzy and weak because I couldn’t get enough protein. Switching to full liquids was like paradise. Did that a week early with no issues. North Memorial’s diet plan is very conservative. I also got Covid for the first time at 4w post-op. I only had a scratchy throat for 3 days and was tired for a week, but had no problems keeping to the dietary guidelines. Almost zero movement b/c I did strict quarantine for 10d to not spread it. I am surprised I’ve done so well given how crazy it all sounds in retrospect. Major abdominal surgery, FT work, life with 3 kids, Covid, harvest season on the farm, and lengthy travel all in 8 weeks. But it’s been great! I have tons of energy! Fear of complications and lack of insurance coverage kept me from doing this for probably 8+ years. It’s nice to hear positive stories collected in one place. I feel for those of us struggling. I still fear something will crop up. We are fortunate. -
$18K Out of Pocket or wait a year for full insurance coverage or just diet?
summerseeker replied to SoCalGuy6622's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We all come at different angles with this issue. I had no choice, I had to pay up. I couldn't wait till the NHS recovered from Covid and I finally found a Doctor who would recommend me for the surgery. I have been asking for 25 years and several had already side tracked me onto yet another diet. If I had been given your choices then I would wait for the free option. It would be only 4 months longer than I had to wait anyway. The $18,000, I would save towards skin surgery later down the line. What do you spend on food in a week ? Times it by 52. Shakes, protein powder and bariatric vitamins are extra costs that you may need to factor in too. Keep chatting to us on the forum and read the back pages while you decide. Good luck -

Hello. Thank you for the kind welcome and words of encouragement. I meet with the surgeon in a few weeks to discuss what type of surgery is best suited for me. How are things going for you since surgery? This group looks like a wonderful tool. If you would like we can become friends, just send me a message. Sleeve or Bypass Regrets?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Every once in a while I think about how I have to fight for every pound and deal with so many stalls and I think the bypass would have been better. BUT...even though my surgeon was willing to do either one and let me pick, I had to do the sleeve because I have lupus and MS and have pills I have to take (and there's no liquid forms of the pills and they can't be crushed or broken) so I knew sleeve was my only option (no pills with bypass and I have to take them). Some of the things I was told to expect with the sleeve didn't happen for me (hunger hormone gone, food aversion, must chew slow and have small bites or stomach hurts and food feels like it's not going down, restriction, etc...) so there's times it feels like it was a waste of time and effort and money. But I HAVE had success, and I AM making healthier choices with my food. So it's still a win, even if it's a way bigger struggle than I thought it would be. -
I really wish more doctors and Nutritionist would give more detailed info on stalls. Mine only gave us a paper saying stall will happen with a pic of a staircase. I would think this board would see a lot less posts on stalls if they only explained it better.

Band to Bypass Surgery coming up...SCARED
MaryRN66 replied to MaryRN66's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The bypass went really well. Less pain than I experienced with the band procedure (weird, I know!) and the weight is coming off at a steady pace. Gotta keep myself in check and not get comfortable and start snacking on the wrong foods or thinking I'm home free. The one big plus...being able to eat FRUIT again! With the band, it never seemed to pass through and I love fruits! I need to increase my veggie intake to be the majority of my meals and summer time being so hot this year, I haven't been cooking the veggies in the oven to keep the house cool. But once it starts to cool down, I intent to go in on baking and air frying a whole bunch of fresh veggies. My surgery was 2/3/22 and I have lost 46 pounds thus far and well on my way to my goal weight. I'm drinking 64-96 ounces of water with crystal light lemonade (yummy) every day and this has been a HUGE help in keeping my appetite in check. I also stop eating by about 5 pm most nights which also has helped. I'm working out with water aerobics and calistenics at home so my body doesn't look like melted wax at the end of my body transformation. The surgery was the easy part though it was the part I was most fearful about. I have a life to live and plans to enjoy my getting older years with my amazing husband. I hope the same for you! -
I don't think most Drs believe in the stalls. I'm so dreading my next weigh in. 🥴

I was a big diet soda drinker, too. I wish I could have herbal tea or something, but we're not allowed caffeine after surgery. And we don't have crystal light over here. So I'm drinking mostly water and some gatorade, but I feel the gatorade makes my heartburn worse, so I drank less of it today.. I've also had some broth, which is ok but it makes me hungry. I'm also allowed protein drinks, but the ones I have are kind of gross. I did make some sugarfree jello yesterday, and I'm trying to have a few teaspoons of it here and there, but I don't love it. I am so ready for this part of the liquid diet to be over. Right now I'm dreaming of oatmeal, which I will be allowed to have next week. This liquid diet is hard.

I think I might be a close runner up to Queen of the Stalls. LOL we will see. I had my first stall two weeks after surgery that lasted about two weeks. I have since then had one every month since surgery. They usually last up to two weeks with the main one lasting 3 weeks. This last one is still going on. Meh It will drop eventually.

Looking for 8/16 sleeve buddies!
KaitlynAnne93 replied to KaitlynAnne93's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awesome! I had to do a 2 week liquid diet so on day 10. I honestly thought it would be so much harder than it is. How are you feeling? -
Hello All. Can I introduce myself. I’m Paul and exactly 4 weeks post gastric sleeve surgery. I’ve been trying to lose weigh all my adult life with varying degrees of success. All ultimately fruitless. There’s very few I haven’t attempted and I was desperate by the time I agreed to surgery. Although a various times I’ve topped 30 stone I was always able to cope with the excess weight. Not so these last few years and severe arthritis in my worn out knees has forced the issue. To get them replaced I have to be lighter. And hopefully ALM will be in less pain and I can move about easier. I was deeply ashamed about having to go down the path of surgery. I’ve loathed my size all my life and it’s had a profoundly negative effect on both my career and personal life. I was a fairly decent footballer in my time (hence the knackered knees) but undoubtedly the excess weight I carried in my younger years, whilst nowhere near as extreme, hindered my performance and damaged my self esteem. I first joined the NHS bariatric programme in late 2015 after encouragement from my GP but I promptly lost 7 stone and decided it wasn’t for me. Life, as always, got in the way and all that weight went back on by 2018\19 after I was made redundant and lost the plot. I was fortunate to get put back on the programme in 2019 and despite the hiatus of the Pandemic got invited to meet the surgeons in January this year. Can’t say I didn’t have my doubts as the date of surgery to nearer but I knew I was probably on my last chance should I walk away. The liver shrinking diet was extremely easy I felt. I stopped any form of alcohol a month before my date of surgery and I’m feeling OK now. I’ve had a couple of incidents of the foamies and have been sick twice trying to progress to purée/soft food. I’ve put that down to eating too quickly and perhaps slightly too much despite my efforts at not doing either. I find I hard to eat the 800 calories a day target I’ve been told to meet, and sufficient protein but I’m working on it. One thing that I do seem to be unusual for reading through this thread. I haven’t weighed myself since the day of the operation. Am I wrong not to do so? I can feel previously tight clothes getting baggy. My view is this is a marathon and not a sprint now and why torture myself if I can see a plateau going on for a couple of weeks. Nice to meet you all.

I hit my first at 2 1/2 weeks and my 2nd at 3 months. They are normal, they suck, and they will (unfortunately) keep happening, especially the further out you get from your surgery and the closer you get to your goal weight.

I meant to post this here…Tomorrow is two weeks post op. Feeling good. Much more energy. Walked a mile and a half with the fam earlier and didn’t need a break, which two weeks ago wouldn’t have happened. Tried puréed egg salad today and seems to be sitting well. My biggest thing is remembering to eat slow. Last night I did my yogurt dinner too fast and it was not pleasant. 🥹 Hubby is getting sleeved 8/26. Lots of changes in our home!!!

VSG to ESG Surgery??-Why??
teedsg replied to teedsg's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thank you for your response. I haven't gotten my GERD checked out for a couple of years, but I know it's getting worse. Part of the regain issue is due to binge eating disorder. I'm still getting treated for that and learning to do other things besides eating. It's been helping, but not really a lot of weight loss (3 lbs since last month), but I can't really get below 220 at all anymore. I'm on HBP meds since last Friday and managing to get it down. I'm totally self-pay for now and the surgeon can correct the gerd, but it won't cover anything dealing with bariatrics under my insurance plan. I guess his office doesn't know how to get it to clear the insurance. I have insurance it just won't cover me for surgery. -
Just checking in; yesterday was 7 weeks post-op. When I weighed in, I'm down 32.1lbs since surgery and 75.5 pounds since I started my extended pre-op 8 weeks before surgery. It's still a struggle to get all the protein and fluids in. I get full on about 1.2 ounces of meat; if I push to 1.5ounces, I feel terrible and/or actually get sick. Non-scale wise, I was able to shop with my teenage daughter for back to school without my back bothering me or needing to stop for a break. I'm keeping up with my 3 year old better as well thought she's a wild child. I've bought a few clothing items and I'm down 3 pant sizes.

So i was going to do that. go back on a liquid diet then my nutritionist said no. That i need stability in my diet to loose weight. that changing from this many calories to less or more can cause you to gain weight.but yea if your BMI was lower then you will loose weight slower. I know i am out of my stall because the previous 30 days i only lost around 5-6lb. and recently after 1 week i lost 5lb.

7 days in to the pre-op liquid diet and one week until surgery. I can do this! Now that the caffeine headache withdrawal is gone, it's much easier to tolerate the diet. I think I have decided not to go back to coffee in the mornings once I can simply because of the awful experience I had with the withdrawals. I only consume one cup in the mornings and I don't wish to go through that again! So instead I think I'm going to start warming up a protein drink or switch to KaCahva or herbal tea or something else that does not have the addicting caffeine. Believe me, I love coffee, but I sure did not love learning how dependent I was on it. One more thing to adjust into my new lifestyle for a healthier me Has anyone else tried that new KaChava drink to replace coffee? Would love to know what you think about it!

$18K Out of Pocket or wait a year for full insurance coverage or just diet?
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to SoCalGuy6622's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There is no right or wrong answer, only you and your wife can decide what is right for you. BUT, I consulted 3 times and backed out every single time, before I finally decided to go the self-pay route and had surgery. All the appointments, the doctor supervised diet, the insurance requirements, etc etc etc. wore me down and stressed me out, so I always bailed. Opting to go the self-pay route got me a surgery date immediately and that was exactly the push I needed to follow through. My only regret is not having done it sooner. Is there any chance you could seek out of network reimbursement? That way, you can get surgery sooner and potentially cut down on the out of pocket cost? -
My surgery is also a week from tomorrow! Hooray. So close and yet I feel like this time is going to go so slowly. I am excited also.

My name is Michelle, I've been on this journey the past 13months. Been geared up for it before then just didn't realize it was an insurance possibility. I'm so excited that I'm finally going g to be able to enjoy life again without worry. My family is very supportive and that makes this so much easier. Been on pre op vitamin regimine for over a week now. I know this isn't going to be a snap but it feels like it will be Sent from my SM-A135U using BariatricPal mobile app

My surgery is a week from tomorrow! Two months ago when I got my surgery date it seemed like it would never get here, and now I'm rushing around making sure I have everything ready I can't wait!

I'm a slow loser. I've been told it's because my BMI is on the lower end. So after my 3 week stall I only lose 1lb a week. I have not lost anything for almost 3 weeks now. So I guess I'll go back to my liquid diet and see if that helps.
