I had the lap band and only my husband knows, not even my kids. I'm having the lap band removed due to some serious complications, and at the same time revising it to the sleeve, and again the only person that knows is my husband, and my co workers that will be on my team, I work in the OR. Maybe in time I'll tell others but don't see why I need to. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App

Bipass Or Sleeve - Now I’M Confused
scaredoftheunknown replied to shastadaisy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sleeve and the gastric bypass (rny) are 2 different procedures. -
I just found out today that my band has slipped and I soon will have to make a decision what to do. You say you revised to bypass, did your insurance cover this? Can you provide me some details? I honestly want this thing out of me. I never expected this journey to be easy, but I am tired of vomitting daily and my teeth and body aching. My son told me today he wants it out too because he is tired of seeing sick all the time. Ugh, decisions...

LAP-BAND? date 4/29 What a shock!!!!
beachcitygirl commented on beachcitygirl's blog entry in Blog 90217
LAP-BAND® date 4/29 What a shock!!!! My consolation was early January. All test were done by Early February. I went in for My gallbladder removal Feb. 22ND. I was told that day I was approved for LAP-BAND®®. I was shocked. I asked her if she was sure. She repeated herself and told me I could schedule surgery for 6 wks. I was so excited. Turned out she was wrong:cursing:. I was no where near surgery. I had to do 6 month pre op diet before paperwork could even be submitted. I was so frustrated, I cried. I started the diet very half hearted, OK, I really did not follow it at all. They were not very strict with me anyways. Dietitian thought 6 mos. was to long, and who was I to argue. Anyways I was looking at a date somewhere in August. This seemed forever. I did not think it was ever going to happen. I decided to past the time by lurking on different fourms. I happened upon a Gastric bypass group. There were lots of post against the LAP-BAND®®. I checked into the gastric bypass. Went to support mtg. at the hospital. Interviewed the Dr. I really liked him. The 2 years I spent researching the LAP-BAND®® went out the window. On April 8th I decided this is the surgery for me, no question about it I'M HAVING GASTRIC BYPASS. April 9th I receive a letter from my insurance saying I have been approved for LAP-BAND®®. WHAT!!! There has been another mistake made. My paperwork can not be submitted Until til July 7. I immediately called my Dr. to find out what is going on! Come to find out the insurance company accepted my primary care doctors records of my weight and diet I did through him last year. They gave me a date for my surgery. April 29th. Now I am stressed, and very confused. Remember I just decided yesterday, I don't want LAP-BAND®®. Now what  I was on the Internet for 2 days straight, and very little sleep. I did get good advice from people, except for the mini war I started on one forum. I just posted a questionon about LAP-BAND®® vs RNY. I felt bad. After much more research and prayer I realized I was just panicking and really did want the LAP-BAND®®. I woke up the next day with such peace, and no stress. This is how I know this is the right thing for me to do. Now that I have made up my mind I stay off the Gastric Bypass site. I am glad I found a home here. Everyone is so encouraging and especially the veterans who tell it like it is. I even stopped cheating on my 2 wk pre-op diet thanks to their opinions and words of wisdom. I am hungry and grouchy. 8 days until surgery. Wt. 246 pounds Hieght 5'4 -
lapband or bypas? I need help to decide,
mm0142 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I initialy started this quest to get the lapband. I went to the seminar and It kinda scares me . The main thing was that they said alot of people have erosion from it and most are later on when you may not have the insurance to cover it . They also said that since at that time I was 403 lbs that I was a better canidate for bypass. IN the last 3 weeks I lost the 20lbs I had to lose to qualify and have my first appt . on the 23rd. Im worried about going bypass due to it not being reversable . Please give me some input . I have My 1st appt . tommorrow . -
I can eat 1/3 a five guys burger with vegetables toppings (no bun) I’m almost 2yrs post bypass (although I’m a VSG to RNY)
-
Right on!! I'm glad you are doing better now, not vomiting ... I revised to bypass. Are you planning on revising?
-
Thank you, did Dr. Aceves do your band and sleeve. Is a revision doctor and doctor that does all three wls's.
-
Yep, he did my band and my revision. A revision surgeon is someone who does a LOT of revisions and I"m not referring to port replacements. If you look on OH MD boards you'll see someone doing 1000 revisions. Those are not true revisions. Fixing a port is not a true revision although some doctors claim it to improve their stats. A revision surgeon is someone who revises you from one surgery type to another. The best docs for revisions in MX are Rumbaut and Aceves.

I"m not sure I agree that sleeved folks lose at the same rate as bypass, at the end of five years we have lost as much as a bypass patient but they lose faster. They are eating about the same number of calories as we are but they are malabsorbing 1/3 of their calories so naturally they are going to lose faster.

So are you saying the sleeve is considered a better option for high-BMI patients than the band? There's a better chance of losing a larger amount of weight? Thanks for the posts guys. The sleeve is looking better and better to me. I don't quite want a bypass, so this seems like a good alternative.

I think the two best surgeons in Mexico are Dr. Aceves and Dr. Rumblaut. Dr. Aceves has done more sleeves, I believe. Dr. Rumblaut has a band himself. They are both very experienced in bariatric surgery, have excellent reputations, and are capable of doing complicated revisions.

Enlist in the Navy
Unforgettable replied to CJRUBIO29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey! I'm an RN and have always considered working as a nurse in the military. I looked into this a year or 2 ago when I realized I was going to get the lapband in the future. From what I read and researched on the internet, it automatically disqualifies you from enlisting. Part of the problem from what I read is that it lumps gastric bypass and lapband together. Hopefully in the coming years there will be more literature and evidence showing that those with lapband could join some parts of the military. If anyone else has heard differently, I'd love to know! Especially any other nurses out there, since we start at officer training and bypass the general bootcamp. -
My band was removed June 2011 and my revision is 6-27. I was 213 and down to 134. Now I am 170. I hate it. Can't lose despite following a very strict 1200 cal diet. Can't wait to be on the losing team. Congrats to all revision people!!

Hi I jsut got my band to sleeve revision on May 29th. Recovery is good so far and I'm looking foward to going on this journey with other band to sleevers. I only lost 25 lbs with the band so I'm worried the sleeve won't work either but I'm following the plan well so far so hopefully i'll get to goal. I didn't have any problems with the band, it jus didn't control my apetite. My doctor said they sleeve would help with hunger so I'm hoping he's right. So far I've had no hunger bit its only been a few days since surgery. I also noticed the side effect that i'm not "hot" all the time anymore. I saw that someone else posted about this and its true! I love this side effect, especially since its summer in Texas for me! I look foward to getting to meet ya'll :-)

I love Five guys as well and I’m 11 weeks post gastric bypass and cannot eat the burgers it’s very limited still what I can eat

I'm erring on the side of caution with how many people I am telling. My big thing is I can't untell them, so until I am sure I want them to know, I am not saying anything. I've told DH, my parents, two close friends, and one friend who had gastric bypass a few years ago (and is doing great - lost 149 lbs - kept it off - not one issue along the way - so I knew she'd be supportive.) DH, my parents, and one friend have been wonderful. The other close friend is having some issues with it, which surprised me. Even told me "As long as you don't get skinnier than me." Sigh. It's going to be a journey. Amy

lapband or bypas? I need help to decide,
Jess55 replied to mm0142's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me I chose lapband because it is less invasive. I strongly considered bypass a number of years ago, but I work in the veterinary field and I've seen quite a few post op cases of peritonitis with intestinal surgeries. I did not feel comfortable with any cutting. Also, now this may seem wrong to other people banded) I did not want to completely give up things like chocolate, which you get dumping with bypass. I am losing weight and I still can have a treat once in a while -
lapband or bypas? I need help to decide,
MarcyLoo replied to mm0142's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon also agrees the band is not only for people needing to lose under XX-amount. According to Australian studies, of course bypass patients lose FASTER but in 15-year studies ultimate weight loss between the two procedures is about the same. Part of my reason for chosing lap band vs bypass included acknowledging that this will be a lengthy process, and a lifelong one. I'm not in the big rush to lose the weight like many people who chose bypass (because it's faster) are. It's taken me almost 36 years to get this heavy...and I have time to get rid of it. Time to change my habits, time to lose at a healthy pace. -
Gastric Bypass or Sleeve? Need feedback, please!
cejiogu replied to kpay10's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did the sleeve and have never been happier. I am looking at my 1 year anniversary and I am 135 lbs down. I think if you are really addicted to sugar the bypass is more for you. I didn't have this problem and was scared of the complications that you can get with bypass. My surgeon does both. I was type 2 also has gone! I was maxed out on all the oral meds I am on none now since January. I can eat anything I want but just a really small amount. I think you really have to look at your relationship with food and what kinds of foods get you in trouble. Good luck either way we are behind you and hope you love the new life you will be entering! Change is hard but it's soooooo worth it. -
I eat a "kids" hamburger with one bun off and maybe a few fries and that is usually too much. I am 6 months post op Roux en Bypass. Honestly, most hamburgers do not taste as good as they did "pre-surgery" too me. My stomach does not like the taste of red meat as well and is very picky on where it "likes" these hamburgers from. Freddies that do steakburgers is one place it does like. The meat is shaven thin and falls apart easily. It does not like cheap hamburger.

lapband or bypas? I need help to decide,
MarcyLoo replied to mm0142's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had thought about the band, then "heard" you need a BMI under 40 for the band so considered bypass...but my surgeon (who I found via the seminar) ONLY does the band and his biggest patient had a MBI if 86!!! It varies doctor to doctor, but larger people DO qualify for the band. (my BMI was 53, now around 51-52). I know erosion has decreased because surgeons have started putting the bulky part of the band NOT under where the stomach is stitched to itself to secure the band. You very liekly can keep the band for a lifetime, as I understand it erosion is no longer common (but remains a risk) So, I can tell you why i opted for the band vs the bypass. It's such a personal decision. 1. Everyone i know with the bypass has horrible gas (maybe it's coincidence but that's what I've noticed). By bad I mean very smelly. 2. Because the bypass removes a portion of intestine, it leads to dumping syndrome with certain foods (sugars I think)...sudden diarrhea and vomiting. I can;t risk this with my job, where I cannot always get to a bathroom. I'm a labor & delivery nurse and cannot always step away from the patient's bedside (literally life or death situations) 3. Because of the missing intestines, it also leads to malabsorption. Not everything you put in your mouth is used by the body as fuel. It leads to weight loss, sure, but IMO it's not the healthiest choice for ME. I feel that I need to retrain my BRAIN to only eat what my body will use, and the band is a tool that will allow that. Every bite I take I have to account for. I can;t depend on it going thru my body unused. Sure I can have treats on occasion, but my daily habits need to be changed. 4. I plan to use the band for life, but it is reversible...and adjustable. I have people at work who REALLY discouraged the band, saying they both had/have it (one switched to bypass) and both only lost about 30 pounds. I guess all I have to say to that is...you gotta work it, and use it correctly. Their lack of "success" does not mean I will follow suit. In the end I went with what my heart told me was right for me. I hope that helps a bit? -
I am no doctor, nor am I a nurse, but it could have very well been that u had some sort of obstruction. I have had 16 abdominal surgeries in the last 7 yrs like, and most were hernia repairs and bowel obstructions, and i'll tell ya, there is noooo pain in this worldddddd like an obstruction. I have had partial and full blown obstructions, and its like someone is stabbing u in cold blood, with a knife constantly....major pain and very uncomfortable feeling, and u cant go to the bathroom, so it sounds to me like thats probably what u experienced. that is what they give u for the pain....morphein In any event, im glad ur feeling better now, and hope ur'll never have to experience anything like that again!!! I have every ailment under the sun. In addition, recently diagnosed with lupus, and after all the bypass surgeons told me im nooo candidate for the bypass, now,....cause my intestines r hanging way below my pelic area, and its like an emergency sort of, they wanna do the sleeve on me and repair the intestines/hernia at the same time. Good luck to u keep up the good work!!!

Congrats on your revision! Not "running hot" all the time is a real change for me too! I'm going to have to crochet myself some shawls pretty soon just to stay warm!
