Gastric bypass or sleeve
bethow replied to laura071693's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have a girlfriend who had gastric bypass 12 years ago. She was at 450 pounds, got down to 200 but has since gone back up to 250. I had another friend and cousin who had the bypass too and they also have put the weight back on. I was a medical biller for 25 years and thoroughly researched all three options before choosing the sleeve. I had my surgery on 8/21/19. My starting weight was 315 pounds. In the two years prior to my surgery, I managed to lose 35 pounds on my own with diet and exercise but it took two years. The two weeks of liquid diet before and after my surgery quick started my weight loss. On the morning of my surgery, I weighed in at 280. They had me up and walking two hours after my surgery. I was given one dose of Tylenol after my surgery and never needed any other type of pain med. It is absolutely wonderful to not be able to finish half of what was a regular meal for me. As if today, I weighed in at 237. All I can say is that the sleeve has been a godsend for me. -

Recovery time for RNY Gastric Bypass
KateBruin replied to lingre's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So I don’t work because I’ve had illness after illness. First diagnosed with hashis, then popcorn lung, and ankylosing spondylitis. Then I had sleeve 2017 and bypass this past April. It took weeks for me to feel human. I spent 1 night in the hospital and left with drains. first patient to only stay a night! The drain was gross and I went to urgent care for them to change bandages until it was removed 4 days later. The drain is just gross. I probably would have requested a month off work if I had an office job. The biggest thing was I was exhausted. Slept like 20 hrs a day for weeks and got severely depressed. -
I’ve lost a significant amount of hair from sleeve, bypass and autoimmune disease. Nothing has helped so far. Biotin is great to try and keep existing hair healthy but I’ve never read anything that says it helps with hair loss. As your weight and diet stabilize it will come back. I’ve been told 9-12 months

Gastric bypass or sleeve
KateBruin replied to laura071693's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would do bypass simply because I got a sleeve, developed gastroparesis, issues with swallowing and horrible GERD. Suffered at least 18 months before I got bypass revision. It hasn’t been fantastic but no more GERD!! I got sleeve August 2017 and bypass April 4. Wasn’t for weight loss but the above issues. I’ve lost 110 lbs with sleeve, gained 50 on high dose steroids and bypass has helped me lose it and now I’m down 117 give or take from my highest! -

Monthly loss amount

I personally find it really toxic to compare my weight loss to others on this forum because we're all so different. I just get discouraged! That being said I'm losing about 10 pounds a month and am 6.5 months post gastric bypass. My team is pleased with my progress. Don't worry too much, just exercise and follow your team's plan for you, and you'll do fine. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -
I waited oh God probably almost a year before i started experimenting with popcorn. But then that opened the flood gates lol. I can eat a crap ton of it now in one sitting so it's on my naughty list. I don't have bypass but i do get sick if i eat too much sugar or fat in one sitting. Sometimes i feel like an overload of carbs and sugar in one sitting makes me sick so i try to limit it. But popcorn so long as its not dripping in butter is cool for me. My fiance made some homemade popcorn with salt a little butter and freshly grated parmesan mixed in. Omg. Sinful. But yeah. Give it time. You should be fine. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi! I had other major surgeries in the past and I was more awake and mobile with this surgery. I had 2 other procedures along with the gastric bypass but this is what I remembered: 1. The hospital will give you pain medication intravenously and it really did help. However, I was released with Tylenol with codeine and it didn’t help at all. If you need something stronger, talk to your doctor. 2. The nurses will teach you how to roll and sit up in the hospital (and that is still tough for me). I read that you should bring a small pillow for the trip home and keep it with you at home. It helps to minimize tummy pain if you sneeze or cough. Walk as much as possible to relieve tummy gas from the surgery. Ask your doctor if you can take Gas-X to help with relief. I had pain I both shoulders and was told that it was gas. It lasted for about 3 days after the surgery. 3. Prior to the surgery, buy your broth, protein shakes, whey powder, sugar free jello, protein water, & 1 ounce plastic cups to pour your drinks into (when you drink the protein shakes, water, protein water, broth, etc). You will need to sip as much as your tiny stomach will allow - like it’s your job- from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep at night. Drinking liquids became easier for me around day 10. 4. Prior to the surgery, buy what you will need according to your doctor’s diet schedule in case you can’t go anywhere for 2 weeks. Make sure you try everything and like it before your surgery. 5. I bought the pre-made protein shakes so I wouldn’t have to make the shakes when I got home. I also bought the 1 oz cups and some disposable popsicle zip sleeves from Amazon. I put some of my protein water in the popsicle sleeves and made popsicles out of them, which helped a lot. 6. Walk around the house & keep hydrated as much as possible to avoid blood clots & dehydration. 7. When it’s ok to shower, be sure to do it when you are not too tired because it takes a lot out of you and you will need to hydrate after you are done. Some of the steri-strips on your stitches or staples may come off in the shower within 5 to 14 days of surgery. I was told not to worry but every doctor is different. Call your doctor if you have any concerns. Take it easy on yourself and try not to be a hero. Your body needs time to heal. I know it’s a lot but this is what helped me! -
Anxiety after sleeve
LastChance57 replied to TriciaMcGrath's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Gastric Bypass (with Hernia Repair, and Gallbladder Removal) on 10/2. I still have tummy pain but besides the 2 bouts (tears) I’ve had, it’s going pretty well. On 10/15, my doctor will let me know if I can have puréed food and I’m really looking forward to it!! -
And I have thought of that, but I know people eat it after gastric bypass.

Nervous about revision
JRT Mom replied to KadieEuropeBound's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
KadieEuropeBound, you look great! I can only hope to look half as good as you do after my band to bypass! You look young and that is in your favor right now for long term PPI usage. But there has been a lot of studies that suggests long term PPI usage can contribute to osteoporosis, and since many of us *ahem* more mature bariatric people have trouble getting enough calcium in their diet we might be already be prone to osteoporosis to the PPI use could be troublesome. -
Lap-Band to Bypass Revision w/Insurance
JRT Mom replied to Lauren87's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have to get my band removed and have opted to get a bypass the same time the band is removed. I have NO fill in my band and I still get food hung constantly and my surgeon says it's not a matter of "if" my stomach totally occluded but a matter of "when". When I got the band 10 years ago United Healthcare paid for the first one. Now I'm on Medicare and the patient coordinator at the first office I consulted with said that Medicare had a strict rule that once you've had a procedure Medicare wouldn't pay for a second one. Well the doctor I'm seeing now said that was ridiculous since Medicare didn't even pay for the first surgery, and now I have to have the band removed through no fault of my own. They are making me meet Medicare's criteria of a three month supervised diet, and the surgeon is hoping I won't occlude before this time is done. I also have to have a BMI of 35 with a comorbidity but since last year I've developed high blood pressure and some maturity onset diabetes and with the weight gain from the failed band no problems there... I just would like something in writing that Medicare WILL cover it...I'd hate to be denied after the fact an be stuck with that bill! -

Lap-Band to Bypass Revision w/Insurance
JohnnyMadison replied to Lauren87's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes, I am in Madison and getting revision done at UW! I was scheduled 11/11 but am selling old house on 11/1 and closing on new house on 12/2 and didn't want to do it while living in in a corporate apartment, nor did I want to move into new house with possible post-op restrictions. So I rescheduled to 12/16. The code on my pre-authorization paperwork for the procedure is just for RNY. It doesn't list revision and when I look up the CPT it just describes the procedure. So perhaps revision is a modifier to the original code so that's why no language about it. With your plan if you meet the requirements it looks pretty good. My plan had a comorbidity requirement but I also didn't meet the 35 or 30 BMI so maybe that's why they did it as a non-bariatric reason, even though I am obviously a bariatric patient. Good luck! I am going through Dr. Greenberg. The facility is just a few miles from both of my houses so I am grateful for all that. I had my original VSG done in Mexico because work didn't have WLS coverage at the time. All of the pre-op nutritional sessions and all that are annoying but at least I don't have to do the supervised diet like most of the people having surgery in my groups. Being on a restricted diet with my original stomach was torture. It is much easier for me with a sleeve and ironically I don't have to do it. -
Lap-Band to Bypass Revision w/Insurance
Lauren87 replied to Lauren87's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks, JohnnyMadison and SorryNameTaken! This is going to be an interesting journey--since my last post, the certificate of medical coverage came out for our plans (local government employee, uniform benefits... a blessing and curse!) and they are covering bariatric surgery and the only requirement is to have a BMI over 35 and to be considered medically necessary. So, this is either going to be really easy or really hard, but I won't know what kind of approach we're taking until I can start the program. There is no language in there regarding revisions, which does give me a pause, but if I meet the requirements and they prior-authorize the work, then I assume we're good to go. That's what I'm hoping, anyway. P.S. JohnnyMadison, nice to see another Wisconsinite present--I presume you're also in Madison? Small world? Did you go through UW for your revision? I have only heard positive things! -
what are the most common reasons people get their band removed?
Msbosse replied to BQT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I just had my band removed Monday and converted to sleeve. I had my band for 7 years. For me I lost about 80 but gained 30 back. I had it revised once due to vomiting because of my gallbladder. At that point they stitched it to my muscle and removed my gallbladder which now I wish they hadn’t stitched it to my muscles.I agree with the others in quality of life is diminished with the band for me. It took my surgeon 2 hours just to remove and get through scar tissue from the band. Sadly that means my recovery from this surgery is longer than most. I hope all goes well for you.
