Hi there- I am a fellow San Diegan and a Dr Aceves revision patient. Dr Aceves is THE MAN for revisions. They will take good care of you, the hosptial is top notch, and you will have several tests to check for leaks before you leave. It's not a bad drive to Mexicali. Also, Mexicali is much nicer than TJ. This decision is really hard. Its difficult to get your courage and resolve together for a second weight loss surgery when the first one was a failure. Every one of us revision folks knows what that feels like. Its terrible. It also seems, to outsiders looking in, that you aren't fat enough to have another surgery because of the weight you lost with the band. I know for sure I would have ballooned up if I had only taken the band out. Instead, I had the revision and now I am at a "normal" weight on my way to my goal weight. Is it hard? Oh yes!! Is it worth it? Absolutely. Good for you on doing your homework and good luck with your decision.

I was also a band to sleeve revision and my surgeon was Dr. Aceves. I had all the same issues you had with the band. I also could have had a surgeon do my revision here close to my hometown for about the same cost but I chose Dr. Aceves because I felt like he was way more experienced at these revisions than the surgeons here. I had very similar band issues as you. I am so glad that it is gone and I am feeling great. Best of luck to you!

Twisted Stomach after Sleeve Surgery
tessies replied to tessies's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So I had my follow up, he is sending me to the Cleveland clinic. My case is far to complicated. I should add prior to my sleeve I had a band, which was revised once. So I am a re-re-re- revision. He said his opinion is I need a second opinion. So I will wait. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

I had my sleeve done in Feb 2017, but after the first year where I lost 100 pounds, I regained about 60. I tried doing pouch resets but they didn't last. I could eat a full plate of food, not as much as I once did (because let's be honest, I probably could eat 2 plates of food), but certainly a lot more than anyone who had had the sleeve should have been able to eat - the restriction was really not there for me. So just over 3 weeks ago I had a revision to RNY (long-limbed). My surgeon and I discussed the possibilities and this was his recommendation based on his experience as a surgeon: People who re-sleeved had the lowest amount of weight loss after a revision People who had a mini gastric bypass (which basically keeps the sleeve but adds a long-limbed bypass - usually about 100-150cm) do great in terms of weight loss, but at least 10% will suffer from GERD afterwards, which will require another surgery People who revised from sleeve to a standard RNY (which is a short-limbed bypass) didn't lose as much weight overall with that procedure People who revised from sleeve to a standard RNY but with a long-limbed bypass did the best with weight-loss and without the complications of developing GERD. So I went with this option (not only because of this, but because of other gastro-intestinal issues I have). In any event, I would talk to your surgeon about what you want to achieve and what is the best option for you, your sleeve, and what your own particular health needs are.

I recently had the sleeve revision to gastric bypass and I have been going through so many emotions. First, I was really beating myself up about not losing what I thought I "should" be losing. Then I all of a sudden started to feel like my husbands extremely petite new assistant has the hots for him. I read texts... She was just too chummy for my liking but didnt even say anything that bad. Just a lot of LOL's after things that werent funny and asking for favors to fix her boat while she is a cheerleader. He doesnt respond at all the same way and is very short with his answers and they are all professional. And, he is not a cheat. I know that in my heart, but these emotions that I have are making feel worse about myself than ever before. I cry out of nowhere and have fabricated this potentional office romance and can't stop checking the call logs or texts. The one line stands out when he asked her what her jacket size was and her response was "well I am small all the way around but I guess I can take a medium for a jacket". Like just say medium!! I know the way that I am feeling has a lot to do with how I feel about myself and my own insecurities, but I dont know how to stop. Google also doesnt help. I went for my follow-up today, I am 5 weeks out, and she said I was doing great. I asked her if it is common to have these waves of depression and anxiety hit out of nowhere. She said she has seem some patients with the issue and told me to try Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics Mood+ Acidophilus Probiotic Supplement. She said sometimes with the bypass we are not getting enough serotonin in our systems and this could probably lift my mood. Just wondering if anyone else had any issues like this or if they are taking a supplement with serotonin? I also had a talk about what my expectations were for the surgery and how that could be affecting things. I am beating myself up because I am not seeing things drop as quickly as I thought they would and I am terrified this will be another bariatric sugery failure for me. I didnt realize that the weight loss wouldnt be as quick with a regular bypass before I had it. All of my other health issues seem to be getting better though, except my mental health haha.

Trying to decide--Bypass or Sleeve?
Beckyyb93 replied to Time4Kindness's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had the sleeve and a hiatal hernia repaired and I have severe acid reflux to the point that we are revising to a bypass. One thing that concerns me that I've read on this thread is that people with the sleeve don't have to take Vitamins for the rest of their lives which is false. For both the bypass and the sleeve you need Vitamin supplements for the rest of your life. The choice is of course yours to make but neither is a bad option and IMO bypass isn't only for people with more weight to lose. If you are worried about the reflux you may go with the bypass but the sleeve is much less restrictive which also has pros and cons. With the sleeve, you have the option of eating ice cream, drinking soda, etc. which if those choices are made you won't lose weight. The bypass is more restrictive and will hold you accountable physiologically. Dumping syndrome doesn't usually happen unless you are eating sugar and carbs again holding you accountable because you will feel crappy if you cheat. There are pros and cons to every single surgery ever and complications and risks. You have to figure out what you are most comfortable with good luck! -
Hi rx! There is a forum at this site that is all about band to sleeve revisions. Many good informative posts there about this part of the challenge. In summary, sleeve is much much much better then the band. I have had great results. The risks of the sleeve are higher at the beginning (ie leaks, excessive bleeding) and those risks are higher for a revision. However, after the initial healing period, the complications are so much less with the sleeve. No vomiting, no slipping, etc etc - and the best part, the weight loss is much better with the sleeve!

I'm getting about 50 oz of water sometimes more per day. This is my 2nd chance, had a revision. First time I didn't have issues like this. I'm taking a stool softener every night..... Doesn't seem to help much.

I was revised in KCMO self pay at KC Bariatrics. I felt the price was reasonable and they offer finance options. -
Hi all, Well the new Dr office called and they are submitting my paperwork for the band to sleeve revision for June 28th. I am a total basket case now. I don't know why, I loved my band when it was working. My major problem is that I can eat everything now, and I do, and I LOVE it. I love having bagels for Breakfast again, and bread with my Pasta, and my hot dogs on buns! Oh and that nice COLD beer when it was 95 degrees out on Saturday! What is wrong with me? I feel like a kid in a candy store, going crazy because I think that when the sleeve is done, it will be like the band again. Please tell me I am CRAZY!!! I know i have to watch my carbs and follow the rules, but for real, why am I thinking this is the end of the world. I do have one major concern, since my band is totally empty, and I have a huge appetite, what is the pre-op diet like, if there is one for band to sleeve revisions? I know when I have to I can do this, but I just want to get a jump start on the Protein, and no carbs, any advice? Thanks, Patti

I have always wanted it. I lost a total of 80 pounds. Complications caused me to have a complete unfill. Praying everything is okay with my band now. You don't lose 80 pounds or even 50 pounds if you don't REALLY want it! But with a spinal fusion, left and right total knee replacements & revisions & a wrist fusion, it might be a little harder for me now. I can do all things through Christ, Who strengthens me.

Insurance Will Only Pay For Rny
pointer replied to rtjhouse's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
U should do the rny anyways. Has been around longer worked out more kinks and better results. Also the rny is the only one I know of where people don't need to do revisions. There has been many revisions for the band and the sleeve is working its way there. Believe me insurance is only covering it bc it's the best end results for u and them. -
I was revised in 1 procedure and he said I had a ton of scar tissue. I was banded in 2008. mThe surgery took over 3 hrs instead of 1.5. One of the scrub techs was actually a friend of mine and she said they have never seen so much scar tissue. They had to switch out midway between the procedure to give a break. I kind of wish they would have recorded it because I would have loved to seen it. Weird I know but I work in the health care field.

5 Years Worth Of A Primary Care Physician Letter???????
Pinkgirl1234 replied to change's topic in Insurance & Financing
I am hoping I have evidence of slippage or erosion to show because I doubt they will cover a revision because I want them to based on my issues with the lapband. -
Just go read in the gastric sleeve section of the forum. You will get more answers and information then you ever dreamed. There will always be arguements about what is the best, but that is because it really depends on what you are willing to do, and what you need from the WLS. In the end the real problem with the band, in my opinion, is how long term is it going to work? You can argue, "I'll get the band, then revise if it doesn't work", but if your self-pay, that is a much harder thing to do. I just love what someone recently said, "I will get the band, and later if I have to have it removed, I will see what is new and better out there". I found the statement to be ironic, because they don't seem to get that the gastric sleeve done correctly, IS, the new and better surgery out there right now....LOL. But most Insurance companies won't pay for it.

Sleeve revision to bypass 2/6.
shriner37 replied to nicholeweller's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Best of luck with your revision surgery! I did the same thing for the same reasons a year ago. My biggest issue was a hiatal hernia that had caused great pain and difficulty eating. I also had pretty bad reflux. It seemed like recovery was about the same the second time around, although I was seven years older. I did not lose as much weight after the bypass, but probably because I didn't have nearly as much to lose. As has been said, be careful to chew thoroughly and you still might find some foods that cause you challenges for a while. Just go slowly and if something causes issues wait a while before trying it again. The pouch does react differently than the sleeve and it takes a while to learn how to deal with it. Two things that you may or may not experience after the bypass are dumping syndrome (your body reacting to sugars) or reactive hypoglycemia or late dumping (your body overproducing insulin in response to a meal). I was lucky not to experience dumping but do have issues with the reactive hypoglycemia. I noticed that I lost weight for about 3 months after the revision, then stopped. One difference for me this time is that if I gain weight it seems to stay around, where often times with the sleeve I would gain a couple pounds then lose them easily. Not sure whether this means that my metabolism wants to be at a higher set point weight. I didn't really do the revision to lose weight, and I'm still 15-20 pounds lower than when I had the revision, but it is something I've noticed. Also, my experience is that although the surgery helped tremendously with reflux, for me it's still not gone completely. I'm still taking omeprazole daily, and if I eat certain things in the evening I might still have a reflux issue late at night. I can completely control this by not snacking at night. -
My scars looked great initially and then formed keloids. I am hoping with revision they use same entry points and I can use some silicone patching to assist with the keloids.

Brit - My band doctor doesn't even do sleeve surgery "b/c there isn't enough data on it yet." How about there's a lot of not so great data on the band, toots? Just sayin'!!! Tif - when you mentioned bread, I almost gagged just reading the word! For some reason, I always get stuck around my parents (who live in a neighboring state). I get the "oh no, are you ok" face and I hate that they worry. I also hate knowing that 15 or so people know I had the stupid band put in and know also that I've maybe lost 30 pounds. Now every pound lost is great, don't get me wrong but still!!! My band surgeon's staff is great and they were on the ball with paperwork to the insurance. The notion of going through all that again is just daunting. A friend from LBT (lapbandtalk) is going to begin the process of looking at revision. PBing is just the grossest, unsettling, and somewhat painful thing. Ugh!

VSG to Revision
Walter Lindstrom replied to ge0rgette2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We've successfully helped several GHI members get revisions so please be optimistic - BTW, whether or not you regain weight is IRRELEVANT since changing eating patterns due to severe GERD is not only common, but often a necessary way people can tolerate ANYTHING! Let us know if you're submission is denied before anyone at the doc's office does something that might hurt your chances of being approved and GOOD LUCK! GERD really sucks so hopefully you get approved without a problem. -
Weight loss stall...after revision... not yet a year
Biddy zz π³οΈπ replied to astarwalker's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi @astarwalker I am a band to RNY revision. My band was 10 years ago, and my RNY just pre Christmas. I am now almost 20 lbs lower than I ever achieved with the band. I am on maybe 700-80 calories a day. I suck at getting my water in (excuse the pun) and like you work 14 hours a day and my exercise aim is slight! I have an Apple Watch and try and get 15 mins heart rate elevation exercise a day by taking stairs to visit staff across floors at work! My carbs: try for below 50 but certainly below 70g a day carbs, and 20g sugars. Most days 50g protein, sometimes 60g. Strictly 3 meals a day - my surgeon, who is following 1700 bypass folk in a longitudinal study, is adamant this is the key determinant of success. No snacking. Ever. I adhere 9/10 days... -
