  1. October 17th update. Just an update I ended up in the ER then admitted to the hospital on Monday (the 14th) night 3 days ago. Had the worst pain ever I work my husband up. No vomiting or nausea just abdominal cramping. ER did tests and discovered I have a partial bowel blockage. They decided to transfer me to the hospital where my bypass was done 2 weeks ago. That took a while as the beds weren't available. I started to feel better and basically it was 3 days no food and water I was on IVs At the other hospital my surgeon had them do upper GI xrays and watch me drink things to see if there was a blockage. Liquids seemed to pass. I am home today and just doing liquids. One of the hospital doctors said these things can workthemselves out and that the intestines were "angry" This was scary but I hope in 6 months I will look back on this as just a blip. feeling okay now but having some regrets....

    Third Revision...

I've heard of it though I'm not sure why surgeons would revise from band to sleeve (of course they have their reasons, just wondering what these reasons are). Anyway I was a band to MGB and a band to sleeve wouldn't have been possible anyway because of so much scar tissue. I also had severe reflux so sleeve was out of the question anyway. However, if one revises from band to sleeve I'm not surprised about the second revision because quite a few people get severe reflux after sleeve.
  3. My journey starts all the way back to my pre-teen years. I was a chubby little girl. At about 8-9, my Mom put me on my first diet. At 15, I took weight loss shots every week for two years. During High School I stopped eating and dropped weight and grew so that helped. By 17 and graduation, I was at a comfortable 125-130. I maintained it for the next 10 years by smoking and not eating. I didn't eat healthfully, but darn if I didn't eat slowly and chew my food to death. Fast forward those ten years and I was 27, in one abusive relationship after the other, and became an exercise addict. I still didn't eat healthfully. but I ate so little that it didn't really matter what I ate. Forward another two years and I was 29 and getting married to my true love. I still had very bad eating habits, and now I was faced with having to eat regular meals at regular times. ACK! I gained weight almost instantly, and it's been compounding for the last 26 years. I tried SlimFast, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, Adkins, Mediterranean, and pretty much everything else. If I did lose some weight on them, I gained it all right back once I went off of them, plus more. I became a yo-yo dieter. The only thing that worked for me again was to stop eating. I could do a fast for about a day but by the second day my husband was on me to eat. Not that he didn't want a healthy wife, but I think he was afraid that I might turn out to have an eating disorder that was dangerous. At 36 I moved to where we live now, kind of out in the country, with cities not too far away. Once I worked for the university I started to look into finishing my bachelor's degree. Which I did. In 2008, when I was 44. At that point I was so heavy that I couldn't stand myself and started looking into weight loss surgery. Husband and I both went in, listened to the seminar, got our first appointment out of the way, talked with the surgeon, talked with the insurance guy ... and never went back. Insurance was nigh unto impossible to get cleared back then. The hoops you had to jump through were prohibitive, so I dropped it. For then. I scheduled to do the seminar again in 2015 or so, and again the insurance hoops discouraged me. Plus other people discouraged me. So I stopped. Now, I'm at my highest weight ever. I have GERD, sleep apnea, kidney problems, HBP, low thyroid, and joint pains. All from the excess weight. So I went back (3rd time's the charm, right?) and started the process over again. I've had my initial visit and labs done, I have scheduled the next 4 NUT appointments (thru Jan) and then the post-NUT assessment with the surgeon in January. Between this time and that, I need to get my psych clearance and have an ultrasound of my stomach done. Both are now scheduled. Now, I wait. It seems like it is taking forEVER, yet I only had my first appointment on the 8th. Not even 10 days yet and it feels like MONTHS have passed. I've started cutting things from my diet -- all my bad habits. The first to go in October are candies, cookies, fast food, and chips. i'm already down 7 pounds. Next month, I limit soda intake, and cut portions down to 2 cups per meal. November, I cut soda intake in half, cut my portions down to 1.5 cups per meal. December I go off the soda, drop my intake to 1 cup per meal and increase number of meals per day to 5. January, I'm hoping to be drinking my water, and be at the point where I'm at 1/2 cup of food per meal and 5 meals per day. Hopefully I'll be able to have surgery in February depending on my surgeon's schedule, and my insurance to clear. They have lightened up on their requirements so I'm more hopeful that I'll be approved. As far as who knows, my husband knows I went to my first appointment and that it is my goal to have bypass surgery. He's not super excited about it. In fact, I haven't been able to share any of my excitement or goal setting or anything with him. He is disabled and his health is frail, so he's been having his own issues. So, I bring my enthusiasm and my questions and my hyperactivity here to BariatricPal. You all have taught me so much already. Thank you. I'd love to make some great friends here, and I think I will. If you'd like to make friends, send me a message or reply, or just feel free to add me. I'd love to start a conversation with other like minded folks, who are excited, learning a lot, questioning a lot, and are just generally addicted to this site. LOL. Seriously, though. I'd love to hear your story too. Cheers, Mac

    Looking for your story

Hey Jenny, I'm only 3 1/2 months out, but I'll let you know about my journey so far and hopefully that'll help some lol. I have always been a short and chubby guy, but made the decision in February that I wanted to change it. After talking to my coworkers who have had the surgery (one bypass and one sleeve), I decided to look into it and get a consult. My doctor suggested/approved me for the sleeve surgery. My date was set for July 2 and I all the other stuff (psych eval, bloodwork, etc.) were all done rather quickly and were no problem. I didn't have to do any pre-op diet or anything, but started to practice what they expect for afterwards (smaller meals, smaller bites, chewing 30 times, no drinking 30 min before or after, etc). I had my surgery early July 2 and it went well. I had the earliest appointment and my best friend drove me in and stayed with me. Basic pre-op stuff and then went in the room and woke up like 2 hours later in recovery (4 small incisions). They had me up and walking pretty much right after I had a room and they had me walk every hour or so and sip water. After a day, I was home and starting my journey. After surgery, you're just having fluids like water and a small amount of clear soups (you're honestly not all that hungry for a little bit). Then you're on the fuller liquids for a little while (make sure you get your protein shakes in you cuz it helps you heal better). Next, you can eat a little bit of food, but its mostly unbearable stuff lol. I got by this by having small low-sodium V8 cans as sort of a tomato soup...really enjoyed that. After that, you can finally incorporate normal food in which was nice. Eating is def different now, it needs to be slowed down and sometimes it sucks not being able to drink water with your dry chicken lol. I get by by having a good amount of 4 oz Veggie burgers with protein that my mom found on QVC. Haven't really had any stomach probs since either, which is really good considering life before surgery lol. 33 down now and people say they can see the difference.

    2008 to 2019

Hello to anyone out there who is reading this. it has been 11 years since my gastric bypass and wow! I was reading my past entries things have certainly changed for me. I had the weight problem, lost about 90lbs, became an alcoholic, got divorced, remarried, moved to Houston, then back to Atlanta, became born again, through the peace and grace of Jesus Christ!, traveled monthly to RI to check on my parents, lost my brother and father in 2019, relapsed with alcohol several times, as of today I have been sober for 2 years!~~~~WHEW! So now I am married to Michael White, someone I have loved for over 30 years, I am living sober, grieving the loss of my brother, Chip 01/09/2019 and my Dad, Ray 09/06/2019. As for the weight, I am now 208lbs and not really happy at this weight, but Thank God it's not 275! The most important part of my journey is that I became a Christian, I would have been dead by now if I had not done that. I feel okay today, some days are difficult because I do not drink alcohol anymore, so I have to depend on God through everything...opps gotta run....

    Are you Sleeve to RNY?

I had my sleeve done in 2017, lost 100 pounds, gained half of that back, and am now looking to have a revision to gastric bypass early next year. Am frustrated I failed the first time around, and that I didn’t go for a bypass in the first place. I’d be interested in joining the group.

    Medical ID Bracelets

I guess I missed this post. I bought a bracelet right after I had the RNY. It says, " Bariatric Patient" "Gastric Bypass" "No Blind Ng Tube" "No NSAIDs". Bought it on evilBay. I want to say I bought it for $5. Its been 3 years so I don't remember how much I paid for it.

  10. Hi. So, I had my bypass 6.5 months ago, and my nails are in terrible shape. Peeling and splitting. I like to wear nail polish, but it just doesn't stay. A day or two after polishing them the polish starts chipping and flaking off! Any suggestions for improving my manicure? I just started taking biotin for my nails, and hair loss, but I'm sure it takes months to see improvement. Thanks! Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. Hey guys hope everyone is going well I'm officially 11 sleeps away from surgery surgeon filled me in on some final things and I asked a few questions. he said coffee is fine like 2-3 black coffees a day are fine which is good because I don't drink hot coffee but ill put a teaspoon in a shake and it gives me a boost in the mornings before a long day I'm just getting bored waiting counting the days; marking off the calendar! Had a little hunger craving today for the first time in weeks so had some fruit & chicken breast meat was very tasty! I'm lucky my preop diet is just continue with low calories and low carbs and 3 shakes a day which I've been doing for weeks now anyways! I'm just ready to get into the hospital and get the operation over and be relaxing in my private room it will actually be nice to be waited on by the staff for a few days surgeon said he will not make me leave until I'm healthy enough to be on my own as I live alone. I'm just hoping for an easy stress free recovery I love seeing inspirational posts from those who have had the RNY BYPASS already thanks again Mike

    Are you Sleeve to RNY?

What did you find most difficult with the revision? I am going to revise sleeve to bypass 11/22 and would live to hear others experiences.

    Pale / Clay Colored Poop

14 days post op gastric bypass. I just had white poop? I don’t have any pains due to gallbladder I am not drinking enough water could this be a problem?
  16. Y'all need to revise your plans and get back on track
  17. I am seeing Dr Fitzer to have a failed lap band removed with a conversion to bypass. So far I like everyone there and their office staff are the sharpest of ANY doctor I have visited for 65 years! I posted this another place but I'll say it again--there are lots of competent surgeons out there but the "front of the practice" is probably the most important part of your weight loss journey. If you don't have those movers-and-shakers keeping it together for you, helping you jump through all your insurance hoops, answering all your (my!) dumb questions it just isn't happening. I had to bail out of a practice in Richmond which is closer to my home due to the office staff. I liked the surgeon but the office was terrible at communication, returning calls, finding insurance requirements and once I was given just flat out wrong information about Medicare that almost ended my journey before it even got started. Dr Fitzer's office runs like a top! I can give a better referral after my surgery but so far I love them enough to travel 4.5 hours to see them.
  18. I'm having a revision next week on Thursday Oct 24th. I would take part in this group. Thanks
  19. Was wondering if anyone has had the Overstitch procedure done. I am considering it as I have gained weight back. I am 7 years post-op from gastric bypass. I was told I would only lose approx 20lbs.
  20. Where can we follow your story? Im also getting RNY revision surgery in Nov Sent from my SM-A530F using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. I had a psych eval for my band, which was just talking to a counselor for about 30 minutes and that was it. My psych eval for my revision involved 3 different paper tests having around 300 questions total and then I sat and talked to a psychologist for about an hour. His questions mostly revolved around whether I was a binge eater, emotional eater, what changes I have made to ensure I will be successful in combating boredom eating and bad habits. He also wanted to know what support systems I had in place. He did ask a little bit about my family history and my past, but didn't go into it in great deal. I am currently on an anti-depressant and I was cleared with no problem. While my first eval was much easier than my second one, both evals were pretty relaxed and easy to go through. Some doctors will bring you back for more than one evaluation, so it's possible that could happen with yours. With my most recent psych eval I was warned they usually do three visits, but I was cleared on my first one. Good luck!

    Can't stop losing weight

You’re so sweet! I went to my first HIIT workout post bypass revision and shoulder repair. I wore tiny little booty shorts and would catch myself in the mirror and think damn you look good!! I might have dysmorphia but at least I have moments where I really recognize the loss. When I could see clavicle, chin and definition in my neck I practically peed myself in excitement! The loose skin is starting to be real and it really sucks we can’t get rid of it without paying tens of thousands of dollars. I’d probably be around a size 4 if I didn’t have it!
  23. Sorrynametaken, my surgery is Nov 20. Even though I jumped through all the insurance hoops when I got my band done I have to start over. Luckily (or unluckily) my BMI has crept up enough that between that and the two comorbidities I have developed in the past year (diabetes and high blood pressure) I will qualify for Medicare to pay for the removal and a RNY bypass. I live in SW Virginia but am traveling to Reston, VA to have my bypass done. I got my band done locally but that surgeon has left hence the trip. But I really like the surgeon (Matthew Fitzer) but more importantly the office staff has their sh*t together and are easy to get in touch with, always return your calls, and work hard to make sure your personal and insurance needs are met. There are a lot of good surgeons out there, but if their office staff sucks it doesn't matter--the front end makes all the difference. I first saw a surgeon in Richmond but their office is a disaster area so I looked elsewhere and I'm glad I did! OMG, next week?!? PLEASE keep in touch and let us know how it went!! Lots of positive vibes coming your way!!🍀🙏🌈🌷

    February 2019 weight loss buds

gabybab--so sorry to hear about the Endoscopy. Please keep us posted on the followup. I hope you will not need a revision, although if you do the procedure should be minimal, right? Or would it be similar to enduring the whole process over again? That would be awful. I feel you about the lines on the face....no one tells you that you will age substantially. I see it in my hands, my forehead, my mouth and especially my neck. Thank goodness turtleneck season is arriving in the Midatlantic!
  25. @JRT Mom It's sad how many people share our same story. I'm sorry it's been such a tough road for you! My doctor was telling me that sometimes the scar tissue under the band gets too tight and they actually have to go in and slice it to release the restriction on the stomach even after the band is already off. I'll be interested in seeing if that is what has happened with mine since I am also unfilled. I am revising to the bypass next week. I never wanted to get the band out, but I realize I really need to take control over my life again. I feel like my band has been in control of me for way too long at this point. Do you know when you'll be revising? I really hope the bypass ends up being so much better for you! Also, I live in NW VA, so howdy neighbor! I had my band done in Richmond, VA, but my bypass is going to be done in Winchester, VA.
