Anyone go home same day as surgery?
Tiffykins replied to TexasT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my band to sleeve revision done here in Florida, and was scheduled to stay in the hospital for 3 total days, 2 nights. My surgeon performs 3 leak tests. The last leak test being performed on the day of discharge. From everything I've seen here and on a couple of other boards, the average stay is 2-3 days. I'm grateful that he requires the 3 days. On the day of discharge a leak was found on the last test, and it was repaired immediately. The reason for my leak was due to the damage the band caused to my stomach. Leak risks triple with revisions, and I'm so glad they found it before I was discharged. -
Question on revision vsg to bypass
Matt Z replied to animallover1247's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Odds are this was due to the revision and not actual reflux. How are you doing now? -
Unrealistic Expectations
Beadingnurse replied to ILKrista's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My boss had great advice when I told her I was going to have the surgery. She said not to tell anyone at work because even if my small team of a dozen folks or so are supportive, we work in a company with over 1,000 employees. She said that the story will get retold and revised and pretty soon I will be the woman who had a face lift, boob job and tummy tuck while I was at it and that people I don't even know will be checking me out. She has worked at our office for a long time and said she has seen it happen. I am doing what one of the other posters mentioned and that is to take sick leave but tell everyone (except my boss) that I am on vacation. Good luck with managing everyone's crazy expectations. You might try just laughing when they say something stupid like you are sure they must be joking. -
Help! Anyone ever have shortness of breath?
LilReDiva replied to 2befree's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No solution or answer, but I also had breathing issues with my band. I was banded in August 2013 and about a year later started having breathing issues. My Dr. said everything was fine but ended up get it unfilled for relief and slowly began with the weight gain. I had the removal in August 2015 and hoping to finally have a revision this August to the sleeve. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
LOW BMI (27), APPROVED, having second thoughts.. HELP
Bndtoslv replied to Scottyd1264's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
How long ago was your band removed? I found it very hard to stop gaining weight after removal. I would go for it to help you maintain. You won't lose too much. It's a revision that is why it was approved. -
It is your body but take it from me.I had sleeve 2011 and in 2015 had severe acid reflux. Had to have a revision to bypass.I too was afraid of bypass.Wished i had it the first time ,then I wouldn't of needed the second surgery. 30 to 40 % sleevers had to have revision because of acid reflux.

I googled Sils method and it directed me to a bunch of sites for hysterectomies, not VSG. Can you give me more information on the Sils method for VSG? I never had hunger headaches. What he is experiencing sounds like what I had when I first did Atkins, and it was my body getting used to not having carbs, it lasted a few days, a few Tylenols later and it passed. I didn't have any issues after having my revision to VSG from the band. Not sure what surgeon you were looking into, but there are several wonderful surgeons in the Dallas area that perform laproscopic sleeve procedures that come highly recommended and referred by their patients here. The reason I had the sleeve done is because it was easy for me to lose the weight, I couldn't keep it off and that's where the sleeve comes into play. Okay - edit to add- You're looking for a surgeon that performs the single incision VSG, and I don't know of any in the Dallas area. I know Dr. Nick, and I'm pretty sure Dr. Barker and Dr. Kim both use the standard 4-5 incision sites to perform the VSG.

I think the Band works differently on different people. Not sure if it has to do with the type of Band... fill docs... or whatever. Some people PB a ton from the get-go regardless of what they eat. Others never have a PB at all. What I do believe is that you need to work to be successful with as little fill as possible? Why? Because in general, the smaller the fill, the more healthful/normal foods you can eat. The smaller the fill, the more calories you're probably getting (although not too many), so your metabolism doesn't shut down. You also leave yourself more room for success. I know that when I got super-tight... when barely anythign would go down... that's when I turned to the junk food that somehow always made it down. At this point, I was starving... eating so little... and desperate, so I turned to food, any food, for nourishment. My nails were shot... hair looked like crap, etc. Removing some fill lead to better choices, and eventually more weight loss. Of course, now it's been three years since I've had a fill. Had to have the one I had in March (I think) removed because it gave me problems. Was planning on revising to a VSG (Vertical Sleeve)... but became preggers again. I will say that even though my Band can go crazy during pregnancy, even with no fills (like when you have your period)... it is still comforting to know that I have the Band vs. a malabsorption surgery during pregnancy. As for the MGB, I looked into having that done in 1999 when I started my WLS research. Have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Rutledge. He has published some great long-term data on the MGB, covering a ton of patients. You can check it out at his site, which used to be clos.net Not sure if that still works.

Help me Friends! Sleeve vs MGB! How did you decide?!
CR0610 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Please help my surgery is Monday and I am still unsure which procedure is better for me. I have a failed lapband, BMI of 33.2, CW 189. I read the forums how sleeve patients usually regain after years and go back for revision. However is MGB to invasive for my weight loss. I don’t want to lose to much. Please help me decide. More heads and opinions are better than one :) -
Good thing you are in Georgia instead of Fall River Mass. That would bring us a whole new set of problems Hope your insides smooth down and recover, then if you want to revise, your body will be healed enough to let you..

a806514: My original Dr. was Dr. R. Williams (Columbus, Ga. but was suspended and then relocated......LONG story!). My Dr. now is S. Steinberg in Decatur, Ga. The plan was for a revision. What worries me is that there was no mention in my denial paperwork about the problems I am having. I have not talked to my Dr. yet but I am hoping we can fight it. Thanks for the reply and encouragement. I will keep you posted!

a few questions (lapband to vsg)
Malaika replied to adavis's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well if you can't get your insurance to cover it, there's always Dr. Aceves in Mexicali - his regular price is $9500 for a sleeve, not sure what a revision price is; others will know. He's absolutely fantastic. -

1 week to go and feeling slightly lost
elcee posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I have one week to go until my revision from Band to RNY. I have been toldnot to do a preop diet but just to stick to clean eating!! I am extremely happy about that and could have kissed the NUT when she told me that as I remember how awful the preop was before my band. But do you know how confusing clean eating is? Yes I know I need to steer away from processed foods and added sugars but apart from that there are so many different variations. I haven’t been told no carbs but I am trying to keep those to a minimum ( except veg). I’ve also given up alcohol. Hopefully that is enough! -

After years of success, my body is rejecting the band - cany anyone else relate?
mary murphy-dematteo replied to mary murphy-dematteo's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thank you to everyone for your input. Based on my conversation with the insurance company, it sounds like they will cover a revision of some sort using my previous BMI. The sleeve sounds almost too good to be true. i'd love to be eat real food and veggies - just in small quantities. I'm just curious about how much weight people have lost after switching from the band to the sleeve. At the most, I only need to loose another 30lbs. The other question is, did any of the surgeons expess concern over how much of the stomach is removed. My surgeon made a comment recently that he wasn't fond of the surgery because it wasn't reversable and you don't know what the long term complications are. Thanks again - Mary -
I would not wish the crapband on anyone! 10 year survivor of that torture device. Never did well, beat my self esteem to the ground, and caused pain. I am at goal - lost 150# after revision to sleeve.

To make a long story short 252 lbs at the time of surgery on 9/24/09. First fill scheduled for 11/17 but found that port had flipped. Revision on 1/14/10. My current weight is 218 and I had my first fill on 3/1/10. I have been on liquids since. but barely.. they tried 2cc but it was too tight and took someout so I believe that I have a bit of 1 cc.. and the liquid is so hard to go down.. I am going to try to go on mushies for dinner tonight because I am so starving!! does anyone have any suggestions? Also the protein was too dense to go down as well.

Revision in one operation or two??
Bornagainbabe replied to chica's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Mine was done in one op and having two separate ones was never discussed or considered. Only thing my surgeon said was that if he found he couldn't perform the revision he would just remove my band. I had mine done as open surgery though as I had a lot of scarring from a previous big abdominal hernia op a year earlier. My band had been empty for quite a while beforehand as it had slipped a lot so that wasn't an issue and I did have to follow another pre-op diet. My surgeon informed me of the risks and possible complications concerning revision and assured me he would do he best he could for me. I was happy with that and left myself in his hands as I trusted him implicitly. -
Official November Bypass thread
Dream4tc replied to Dream4tc's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
: @choosehope- I am so sorry to hear that your surgery was being pushed out due to illness. I hope that you feel better quickly so that it can be rescheduled soon! I had lap band on Nov 16th 2011, and I knew that I was going to give up Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners because of it, but I really was ok with it. Those holidays are the worst for pies, Cookies, and so many more fattening things that I didn't need. With having the restriction from the new surgery, I really didn't crave anything. My family offered to puree some turkey and gravy....hehe I wasn't that desperate. I was able to get through just fine without any temptation. I know that with my upcoming revision to bypass on November 12th, I will be fine. I think if you can get through the 2 toughest holidays that's known for eating, then you can do just about anything I still was able to sit with my family and enjoy conversation while I drank my egg nog flavored Protein shake. I helped prepare the meal, but had to have others to taste test which was fun. My family was supportive, so it was pretty easy for me. This year will be the same -
Looking for Sleeve Buddy for Dec 7th.
Fatty McFatster replied to Fat2Phat2016's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My lap-band to gastric sleeve revision surgery was on November 20th. I had to do a 2-week pre-op diet consisting of mostly Protein liquids along with a salad each day. Everything went great with surgery besides having a seizure at the hospital!!! I had constant nausea the entire first week after surgery, but it's better now. I also try to walk every day even though I still don't have very much energy. My biggest craves, believe it or not, are apples, bananas, tuna, and pizza. 3 out of 4 ain't bad I guess. Lol. I am now 3 weeks post op and have lost 30 pounds. It's a decent start, but I still have a long way to go. Good luck to everyone!!! -
Hi there- I am a fellow San Diegan and a Dr Aceves revision patient. Dr Aceves is THE MAN for revisions. They will take good care of you, the hosptial is top notch, and you will have several tests to check for leaks before you leave. It's not a bad drive to Mexicali. Also, Mexicali is much nicer than TJ. This decision is really hard. Its difficult to get your courage and resolve together for a second weight loss surgery when the first one was a failure. Every one of us revision folks knows what that feels like. Its terrible. It also seems, to outsiders looking in, that you aren't fat enough to have another surgery because of the weight you lost with the band. I know for sure I would have ballooned up if I had only taken the band out. Instead, I had the revision and now I am at a "normal" weight on my way to my goal weight. Is it hard? Oh yes!! Is it worth it? Absolutely. Good for you on doing your homework and good luck with your decision.

I was also a band to sleeve revision and my surgeon was Dr. Aceves. I had all the same issues you had with the band. I also could have had a surgeon do my revision here close to my hometown for about the same cost but I chose Dr. Aceves because I felt like he was way more experienced at these revisions than the surgeons here. I had very similar band issues as you. I am so glad that it is gone and I am feeling great. Best of luck to you!
