I don't like my Bariatric Team :S
Recidivist replied to canadianpopcycle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, Canadian--and welcome to the forum as a poster! There is a lot to unpack in your message, but let me start by saying I completely understand the frustration you are feeling. I had thoroughly researched WLS before ever contacting a doctor, so I knew the pros and cons of both sleeve and bypass and fully understood what was involved, both pre- and post-surgery. I also found the nutrition class way too basic, because I already knew everything they covered based on my research. I just viewed it as a box I had to check and suffered through it. Unfortunately, I think you and I are unique as very well-informed patients. I was truly shocked at how many people in my nutrition class were clueless about what to expect from surgery and especially how they need to dramatically alter their eating habits, both before and after. I think the nutritionist needs to begin at a very basic level to ensure that everyone gets the necessary information to make an informed decision. As for your doctor, it seems that he/she wants to be incredibly thorough in addressing all possible medical conditions that could be an issue with your surgery. In addition, there may be professional liability issues that require your doctor to look at every possible issue before approving surgery. I also had a huge battery of tests, including a sleep study, that I didn't consider necessary--but once again, the box needed to be checked so I went along. My surgeon also suggested that I follow up with my primary care physician on my high BP, cholesterol, liver enzymes, etc. (although in a polite and supportive way). However, my doctor was already aware of all of those issues and we were dealing with them, so I saw no need to see him again (although I didn't tell my surgeon that). Your surgeon is probably reiterating portion control and foods to avoid because so many patients need to be reminded constantly. However, there's no excuse for being rude and dismissive. One question: What is your BMI and how much weight are you hoping to lose? Perhaps your surgeon is not sure whether weight loss surgery is appropriate for you. (I was on the cusp, with a BMI of 37, but my surgeon was very supportive of my decision to pursue surgery and never questioned my motivation.) As for the psychologist, he seems completely out of his lane. My understanding is that the psychological assessment is for the sole purpose of ensuring that you understand what is involved in WLS and that you are prepared to commit to a long-term change in your lifestyle. I would simply ignore the rest of what he said. Hopefully you don't have to see him again. So, all of that said: i think it's essential that you feel comfortable with your surgeon and nutritionist. You should be able to discuss your issues with them candidly and trust that you will get an accurate, informative and supportive response. If you are already reluctant to raise certain issues with them because of how they might respond and are worried that they are not providing the information you need, then you might want to consider looking elsewhere (if that is possible). It could mean you can't have surgery as soon as you might like, but I think it would be worth it in the long run. You will have a long relationship with your surgeon, and you need to feel certain that he/she sees you as a person, really listens to your concerns, and fully supports your choices. -
Has anyone done the endoscopic overstitch to revise bypass
Melly007 replied to clc28's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had this procedure done on October 16, I’m not sure how much weight you are guaranteed to lose, I’m sure it won’t be much. I had my Gastric Bypass surgery in 2008... after giving birth to twins in 2009 and my son 3 yrs ago I had regained 50lbs! -

Who will you tell (or not tell) about WLS?
SorryNameTaken replied to ChubRub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am planning on being pretty open about my revision surgery. I know people are going to ask how I've lost so much weight and if I can inspire someone to look into it that may have been thinking about it, great, if they want to judge me, great. I feel like one of my gastric band downfalls was not being open about it. I think had I been more open with everyone I wouldn't have felt the pressure to eat like a "normal" person around people who did not know I was banded. Granted, I don't think that would have eliminated all my band problems, but I can't help but wonder if I would have been somewhat more successful if I had broadcast it to the world. That said, I'm dreading telling my husband's family. I think they are much more likely to be overly judgmental about it than most people in my life. These are people that think doing keto is the easy way out, so I'm sure they'll have plenty to say, but I'm okay with that. I'm really confident in why I am choosing to revise, so I'll do my best to not be offended by it. I'm planning on significantly cutting back my meat consumption with my revision, so I can fall back on that for people I don't feel need to know about surgery. -
I started my own diet 8 weeks ago. I've lost around 55lbs but stalled last few days so definitely ready for the bypass surgery to kick start my next chapter!!

I ended up getting one from Lauren's Hope and use the same tag for different bracelets. Since I do some long distance training for the Susan G. Komen 3 Day, I wanted something just in case. I was able to put my name, RNY bypass with the date, Asthma, No blind NG tube, No NSAIDs, my husband's name & phone number and my doctor's phone number.

do your research also. it all depends on your willpower and your journey. i started at 303 when i started this journey, my highest was 340. i also was told about 75% of my excess. that would have put me at 118 loss to my dr. goal of being 145. my personal goal is 135. if i make it to 150 heck i will be happy. right now i am sitting at 129.4 loss.. over 10 pounds more than my 75% goal or 82% currently. i just hit my second stall (well it broke on Sunday) so i am losing again... i had the sleeve.. I am happy with what i had and i chose the sleeve because i had no other co morbidities other than the weight. Bypass reroutes your inside, and the sleeve removes some of it, but the organs stay in the same place lol.. it is all personal choice. I wanted my organs to stay in the same place, plus lets be real. I was self pay and the sleeve is half the cost of the bypass. -

I'm still pre-op and having to decide between sleeve and bypass. I'm going with the bypass mainly because I have acid reflux and the bypass will stop it. As everyone has suggested, make sure to read everything you can get your hands on. This site is a treasure-trove of experiences and advice. The advice I read here plus my team's advice are going to be a winning combination I believe. Feel free to ask any questions, we've all had or are having them too. All the best to you! -

I went for my first consult yesterday too. The surgeon recommended that I go with the sleeve due to prior abdominal surgeries like colon resection from Diverticulitis and a bowel obstruction. He said I may have lots of scar tissue to sort through. He also mentioned that the bypass was only an additional 30 minute surgery from the sleeve. I believe he favored the bypass bc he mentioned that I'd lose more weight. I'm currently 5'5, 256 with no co-morbidities. -

if you have issues with acid reflux, go with bypass. Otherwise, it's a personal choice. Read everything you can and maybe your choice will become clearer. -

My first post and First appointment with Bariatric Center.
PatrickMaloney posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I had my first meeting with the Bariatric Center and the experience was fantastic! They asked me what I was looking to have as my target weight. I am currently 338 and 5-8” y’all. Have a question for the group. He mentioned the sleeve and the bypass as the two options. He stated that the bypass would get me more results as weight loss goes at around 135 pounds loss. He stated the sleeve would get me about 110 pounds loss. He stated Sleeve issues: Some patients experience lists of acid reflux He stated bypass issues: Your body wouldn’t absorb the vitamins and nutrients as much Would love recommendations from the group. Anyone out there get the sleeve and wish they got the bypass? My first post -
Austin, Texas - how did you choose your surgeon?
MIZ60 replied to EB2015's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I live in Central Texas and my surgeon was Dr. David Provost at Baylor Scott and White in Temple. He is a bariatric surgery pioneer in TX and has been doing bariatric surgery for many years. After meeting him and checking his credentials (I am a nurse practitioner so I investigate every health care provider I see 🙄) I felt very comfortable with him and had absolutely no post op complications. I had the sleeve in May 2018 since I never had any significant reflux. I think the reflux is the main reason people get conversion since you don't want to be on prilosec long term and you don't want chronic inflammation of your esophagus. There are a couple of others on here in maintenance who had the sleeve converted to bypass and have done very well so hopefully one of them will respond. -

Naughty Glitter Goddess replied to NurseMichael's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Michael, I just started following your channel and I like what I see! I, too, am building a new life through fitness (I'm 14 months post gastric bypass) I'm currently in school to become a personal trainer and I graduate in March. I just trained my 1st client this weekend. I'd be super-interested in picking your brain about a few things if you're interested. Please pm me if that's something you might have time for. Either way, keep up the great work, power-lifting looks like a blast! -
I haven’t been on in a while, because I’ve been so busy lately. I hope to catch up today and gain some more inspiration here! I have been doing really good sticking to my personal goal of watching my calories and walking more prior to my surgery consultation to make sure I’m as committed now without the surgery to maintain this lifestyle afterwards. I’ve lost 21 pounds total since August. I’m back in the 200’s, which was my first big goal to get to on my own. I’ve been going to the monthly WLS meetings, met with my primary care Dr twice now. She faxed her approval to the dr for my surgery. She’s very supportive and pleased with the results I’ve had prior to surgery. She thinks this choice of bypass is going to be a great thing for me on my journey to becoming healthier. I have my sleep study consultation scheduled for next month. After my next WLS meeting next month my nutritionist will set up everything with the surgeon for our first meeting... it’s becoming more real now! It helps that my life has been go, go, go... no real time to fret over the 6 month insurance required wait. I also adopted Lola, my 1st puppy ever as an adult, and she has 100% helped keep me active and motivated to keep moving. I feel good and positive about what lays ahead! I hope you all have been doing well, can’t wait to see what everyone has been up to! 💚

The Journey Continues, OR, Third Time's the Charm
Machalo replied to Machalo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The weekend was a dieter's nightmare. Eating out most meals and while not big on quantity, it was big on calories and/or salt. i'm back up. Drat and double drat. Now I'm on liquids until the scales go back to where they belong. In good news, I don't have to do the test with the tube down my throat for a day since I've decided on the bypass surgery. Yay! One less test and one less bill. Today I'll get my first walk in at the recreation center in town. I've been procrastinating and need to just go do it. It isn't like it is going to be that hard to do. Just walking around the track, I won't even do the machines this time. Just the walk. I don't know why I keep putting it off. I know I need to get moving, I just don't seem to be able to motivate myself to get out and do it. So I'll stop on the way home and do it before I get home this evening. Even if I have to sweat a bit in my work clothes, it is better than not doing the walk at all. Any advice on self-motivating when you have no self-motivation would be great. -
Why are they making you wait so long for your revision if you are so sick? That sounds sorta mean to me!
-
Hang in there! It will come sooner than you think. Maybe it's not your band this time--could you have a virus or food poisoning? Your surgery is two days before mine (although I'm going with a bypass). Hope you feel better!

my doc said purees on week 2 I wish I had stayed on liquids. It put me in the hospital. I'm back on liquids and I'm a day shy of 3 weeks and going to stay on liquids the rest of the month. It's easy to follow and you get a nice weight loss. Let your inside guts heal. (I had bypass btw) -
I am not familiar with ipmn. Is this something that was caused by the bypass surgery?
